Gratitude best expresses my thoughts towards our friends, alumni and parents who have supported BC during a year that truly has been like none other. If I were to turn the clock back to last summer, I had every reason to be optimistic. You, as BC supporters had been doing yeoman’s work providing for our near- and long-term needs; your sacrifices have been appreciated beyond words. With the onset of the COVID-19, my own expectations for giving dramatically shrunk. So many of you were affected by the virus, it seemed only realistic to plan for the worst. If I planned for the worst, so dramatically, you proved me wrong. Your response to the crisis was overwhelming. You obliterated my pessimistic (and what I thought were very realistic) expectations and raised support to dramatically new levels; how can I thank you enough? Because you broke the barriers of expectations; BC was able to offer our Cadets as “normal” an opening of classes as could possibly be expected given the demands required to adequately respond to the virus. Thanks to you, our enrollment reached new heights. Thanks to you, our levels of financial aid offerings allowed us to assist the many whose families so substantially felt the virus’s impact. Thanks to you, we were able to retain our excellent faculty and thanks to you, Capital Campaign funding continued allowing the completion of the Athletic Plaza and its accompanying concession and washroom facility; two projects that have been long needed to adequately support our committed community. All of this was done without our accruing debt; how can I thank you enough? In spite of the challenges the times presented, your tenacious support has only drawn others to believe in BC. Already, those commitments have been forthcoming allowing us to renew our optimism for this next year and begin planning for further capital upgrades maintaining the ambitious pace this BC community pledged to support a half dozen years ago. You have not only kept our progress on track, but you have continually advanced our offerings to our Cadets affording them the most promising of futures; my prayers and thanks go with you. So much is owed to so many for bringing BC so successfully along during these times. Enough cannot be said for our incomparable Board so effectively led by Mr. Mark Shawe. With his retirement from the Board, a major reason for BC’s focus and good fortune will have passed; we wish him and Ellen our deepest gratitude. If gratitude is rightly the theme of this letter, great credit must be given to our administrative team of Mr. Jacob Horne, Principal, Mr. Kevin Farmer, Assistant Principal, Mr. Greg Markiton and his Advancement team who were so instrumental in guiding BC through these turbulent waters and Ms. Barbara Evans and her team in Operations & Finance. Again, I just cannot say enough in the way of thanks. Blessings to all.

Sincerely, Fr. Frank Ziemkiewicz, O.S.B. Headmaster 1

BC Earns Top Rating During SAIS Accreditation Review Benedictine Military School is celebrating the results of its Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS) re-accreditation process. On Feb. 4-6, 2020, a team representing SAIS conducted an on-site visit to review Benedictine Military School’s self-study and standards compliance. The team was comprised of team members whose diverse independent school backgrounds provided an array of expertise. Benedictine Military School Headmaster Fr. Frank Ziemkiewicz, O.S.B., Principal Jacob Horne and Director of Curriculum Peter Newman were among several BC representatives who met with the SAIS accreditation team. “The process went very smoothly because of Peter’s experience leading other accreditations and his passion for BC,” Horne said. “Similarly, the teachers were excited to take part in the process. The accreditation was a different flare than the ones we completed in the past with AdvancED (now COGNIA). BC is such a unique institution with it being an all-male, Catholic, Benedictine school with a

2

very strong JROTC program. It made sense for us to shift to an accreditation body that evaluates each school against its own mission versus a one-size-fits-all model. We are not the same as other schools and rather than conform to other schools, we should embrace who we are and focus on how to better attend to our specific mission.” Following BC’s accreditation through its association with AdvancED (now COGNIA) in 2014, various members of the school board of advisors and administration proposed a change of the school evaluation model. “With its unique mission, Benedictine is an independent school with a deep history of educating young men of promise across a comprehensively challenging school program,” Newman said. “The goal of this proposal was to find an accrediting association that would evaluate BC based on its own mission statement. The Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS) offers just that model, so the school sought membership in SAIS and, subsequently, began its self-evaluation in the fall of 2018 with the goal of earning SAIS

accreditation by July 2020. SAIS offers professional development, hiring, and school improvement resources in addition to a customized accreditation model that match both the pedagogy and the practices of Benedictine. “The successful accreditation process culminated in a three-day visit by the SAIS accreditation team in February of 2020 where the team, comprised of experienced educators from various, like-minded schools across the Southeast, dove deeply into the BC program,” Newman continued. “Their feedback has been validating and informative for our diligent and dedicated faculty and staff, and we now have an exciting five-year plan of continued improvement that will sustain and invigorate the long-standing BC commitment to educating our Cadets within our powerful mission.” SAIS accredited member schools are part of an international network of accredited schools that have demonstrated success in educating children. As such, SAIS accreditation is recognized throughout the world as a symbol of quality in education for students and teachers. To earn

accreditation, schools must meet quality standards, be evaluated by an outside group of peer professionals, and implement a school plan focused on strategic improvement and student performance. Accreditation is voluntary and must be renewed each year. “The SAIS visiting team was warmly received by the Benedictine Military School (BC) community,” Seth Hathaway, Head of School and Chair at Prince Avenue Christian School in Bogart, Ga., wrote in the SAIS accreditation team’s report. “All constituent groups were open and cooperative providing the team insight into the unique Catholic and military culture of BC, and all documentation was available to the team online or in the workroom. The team met with the school board and representative groups of parents, Cadets, administrators, and teachers. Members of BC’s School Report Committee and key administrators answered questions about the school report and the strategic goals identified for school improvement. The visiting team also visited classrooms and the gymnasium to observe teachers and Cadets involved in their day-to-day activities. “The interviews with various stakeholder groups revealed common themes providing insight into BC’s very positive and focused culture,” the report continued. “All groups mentioned the caring, supportive atmosphere of the ‘brotherhood’ between Cadets, who have recently been referred to as ‘The 400’ following a successful admissions campaign to increase enrollment. All parties demonstrated strong

support for the foundation provided to Cadets through the Catholic and military models of education and the school’s desire to continue improving its scholastic programming and the character development of its Cadets. Other notable themes were the emphasis on BC’s athletic, math, and science programs.” Hathaway said all groups expressed great respect for BC’s leadership. He said the SAIS accreditation team was impressed with, and commended, the board for its understanding of its role in independent school governance. “Strategic planning was last completed in 2017, and BC’s senior leadership team has already begun discussions on primary topics for the next strategic planning cycle,” Hathaway wrote in the report. “The school has done a superb job maintaining its mission focus in the wake of its enrollment growth, and it is in the latter stages of an $18 million campaign that has seen the completion of a new STEM wing and more recently improvements to its athletic complex. The visiting team was convinced that the school operates very efficiently with its atypical governance structure consisting of a board of limited jurisdiction (board of advisors) working in tandem with the headmaster, who is appointed by the Archabbot of Saint Vincent Archabbey in Latrobe, Pa. The school is well-positioned for continued success and its multi-generational impact on the greater Savannah, Ga., community.” By Noell Barnidge 3

environment while on Benedictine’s campus. Though security upgrades may not be the flashiest investment, it is a necessary investment. Schools, just like general society, have changed since many of us walked the halls in high school. Knowing the challenges that face schools today, I am extremely satisfied to know this will be one of our final priorities.” Horne said a new parking lot serves two purposes: one is aesthetics, the other is functionality. “Aesthetically, it makes perfect sense,” Horne said. “We all know the magic that happens in the halls and on the athletic fields of Benedictine. There is no other experience like it for high-school age boys, period. The parking lot does not reflect what we know to be a one-of-a-kind experience so precious to the Savannah community. For those who have the health of Benedictine in mind, imagine the visual statement a new front entrance would make to prospective families. Beautiful signage, a fence, brick columns, a security facility, etc. Again, it speaks to the great things that are happening here. “Functionally, it significantly increases our parking spaces,” Horne continued. “The original parking lot, planned in the 1960s, was not planned with the increased numbers of students driving on campus every day. The original parking lot was not planned to house a future on-campus football stadium. We all seek the day where Benedictine’s football games can be hosted on campus and the parking lot is one more step to that dream becoming a reality. I mentioned earlier in talking about security that schools have changed since many of us walked through the halls. We need to screen who is coming on and off campus today. To have an individual who controls entry on BC’s campus will also give parents an additional ease of mind as they leave their most precious gift with us.” By Noell Barnidge

Benedictine Receives $1 Million from Alumnus Pictured left to right are Patrick White ‘82 with his two sisters, Margaret Sharpley and Patti Autry with Fr. Frank.

Benedictine Military School alumnus Patrick White, BC Class of 1982, has made a $1 million commitment to the Forward, Always Forward Capital Campaign. The gift will allow the school to renovate and upgrade the last remaining classrooms in the Academic Building. “This transformative gift will dramatically impact our academic programs and offerings for our Cadets for decades to come,” Benedictine Military School Headmaster Father Frank Ziemkiewicz, O.S.B., said. “Mr. White’s generosity is a game changer. It will make all of our academic classrooms consistent with the improvements we have made on campus to include the Brown STEM Wing, Brent Hall, and St. Benedict Hall. It will fulfill the vision of upgrading the academic facilities at Benedictine. “Mr. White has made this gift to honor his father John Patrick White, Jr.,” Ziemkiewicz

continued. “He as a member of the BC Class of 1940 and a longtime Savannah businessman who served our country in World War II and with the 99th Infantry Division at the Battle of the Bulge. Now, his legacy will live on at Benedictine. We cannot express our gratitude enough for one of our grads who is providing the opportunity of a Benedictine education to the next generation.” The Forward, Always Forward Capital Campaign has surpassed $15.9 million, exceeding the original goal of $12 million. Mr. White has made the fifth $1 million commitment in the history of Benedictine Military School, all which have come through the vision of this campaign. The school now will address the final project of the campaign – the front entrance of the school and parking lot, which will bolster our campus security and will significantly increase our parking capacity.

Benedictine Military School’s newly constructed Class of 1976 Athletic Plaza is the hub that connects Fr. Albert Field (football, soccer, lacrosse), Brian Parker Field (baseball), BC Gym (basketball), and the Athletic Center (weight room, football office). Nestled among palm trees and other new landscaping, the Class of ’76 Athletic Plaza features a new concession stand, new restrooms, and a new courtyard. The project is part of Phase Two of the Forward, Always Forward Capital Campaign, which publicly began in August of 2014. “Quite honestly, when you walk around at BC now you’re kind of in awe,” BC Class of 1976 graduate Mike Carbo said. “It’s like, ‘My gosh! Look at this! This is unbelievable!’ It really almost mimics a small college. For these kids to have the facility that they now have to utilize in their practices and games, it’s just going to continue on for years and years to come.” Carbo said he and his classmates felt an intense desire to make a financial gift to the school because they are passionate about BC. “The school, to me, is an institution that changes people,” Carbo said. “It changes peoples’ lives. I’m not saying that everybody that goes to BC walks out of there a different person but most people do. It takes a young man and sets him on a path for success. I know that’s the case for me.” The Benedictine Military School freshman class in 1973 had 153 students and finished in 1976 with 126 graduates. It is the largest class in BC’s 118-year history. When BC Headmaster Fr. Frank Ziemkiewicz, O.S.B., and Director of Advancement Greg Markiton ’92 gave a presentation in 2014, Dr. Frank Scarbrough invited Steven Arkin to attend. During the meeting, plans for the Forward, Always Forward Capital Campaign were revealed. “I asked the question, ‘Is our class doing anything?’” said Arkin, a BC Class of 1976 graduate. “The answer was no, that no classes were doing anything, so I inquired amongst continued on next page

a few of my classmates. I said, ‘Why don’t we try to get together and do a class gift?’ Everybody was receptive so we put together a committee, and the committee started calling everybody and sending cards. Greg (Markiton ‘92) did one presentation at the school for us. It took off from there. I think we’re at $143,500 as of today.” Arkin said he and classmates Bill Barbee, Kevin Broderick, Dave Roberts, John Spellman, Larry Whelan, Mike Carbo, and Tim O’Hayer formed a committee. They instantly knew they wanted to fund an athletic plaza. “When we met with Greg and Fr. Frank early on, they presented us with a list of possibilities and as soon as they said the athletic plaza it was a no-brainer,” Arkin said. “Everybody just said, ‘That’s it!’ There was no No. 2. And then everybody just got behind it and worked real hard, made phone calls or shot emails and connected with some guys we hadn’t talked to in a long time, and we got a pretty good response, about 40 percent, which I think is pretty good for any kind of campaign. “Then, because we were inventing this as we were going along, we met several times and shot a lot of emails back and forth to make sure that we had a consensus as to what to do,” Arkin continued. “That part worked well. Everyone is remaining friends, which is always good, especially when money is involved. It just was a good experience all around. Mike (Carbo) got together some guys and he really focused on getting a nice monument to the class, a class marker … everybody got pretty excited, especially with the chance to do something special for the school.” Carbo said he and his fellow committee members were fairly confident they could raise $100,000 with no issues, which they did. “It was a small pebble rolling down the

10

hill that turned into a boulder,” Carbo said, laughing. “One thing led to another. The Class of ’76 is a pretty strong supporter of Benedictine.” Carbo said approximately 45 of his 126 classmates made a financial gift for the project. “I was hoping to get like 60,” he said. “That was my goal. At least half. We got close. We got into this thing. We started having meetings and deciding who was going to call who, and just ran the gamut. We all tried our best to do the Facebook. We did the calling. We did as much as we could to get everybody notified from the class.” Vincent J. Ferraro III, BC Class of 1976 graduate and President of Mahany Construction Co., Inc., which built the athletic plaza, said the project also benefited from the input of Ziemkiewicz, Markiton ’92, Assistant Principal and Baseball Head Coach Kevin Farmer ’92, Director of Operations and Finance Barbara Evans, Director of Facilities Don Roberson, facilities — Mike Carbo ‘76 worker Carey Harriott ’76, and Board Member Jack Robertson ‘82. “The Class of ’76 was looking for something that we could write our name on that was very eye-opening, that was in the front where everybody that goes to the school can see,” Ferraro said. “A lot of people like to spend their time at BC’s athletic events. As we worked through (the project), we added a little bit here and there to make it turn out to what we think is the bestlooking plaza.” By Noell Barnidge

BC Class of 1975 Earns

“Class of the Year” It’s a challenge that all high schools face. As the years pass, graduates often drift away from their alma mater. As we all know, alumni, particularly their time, talent and treasure (financial support), are the foundation of successful private schools. When Benedictine Military School graduate Tom Hagan, a member of the BC Class of 1975, read the school’s 2018-19 Annual Report, he thought the class should be better represented by more than just nine people from his class who contributed to the Benedictine Fund. “Some of us were together last fall talking about a reunion. I brought up that as the Class of ’75, we’ve not been very active in our giving, in terms of the number of participants,” Hagan said. “I don’t know what people give, individually, but we can do better than 12

that. So the beginning of the year comes, and I raised my hand and said, ‘I’ll do it. I’ll be the point person.’” In January, Hagan was eager to begin tracking down the email addresses of his classmates, who graduated 45 years ago … but did nothing. “And then came Coronavirus,” he said, laughing. “Before, I had no good excuse. Now, I’ve got a good excuse because I assumed nobody is doing anything with the fund drive because of the pandemic. And then (BC Director of Annual Giving Allison Demere) sent out an email at the end of May that said BC has raised $450,000 out of $600,000. And in that email, I think it said we had nine people participating. And my response to that, pardon my French, was ‘Oh, (shoot), I need to do something.’” Hagan, a retired IBM executive living in Tampa, Fla., enlisted the help

of two classmates: Atlanta resident Walter Muller, the retired Chief Investment Officer of Bank of America, and Savannah resident Tom Hussey, Senior Vice President of Investments at Raymond James. “It was really Tom and Walter using their connections, chasing email addresses, and feeding them to me,” Hagan said. “We literally started in June. After we spoke in the fall, I received the email list from (BC Director of Advancement) Greg (Markiton ’92). I think that out of 84 email addresses, a third of them were good. It was, obviously, out of date. So we started with that. My first email that I sent out goes to about two dozen valid addresses. The key for us was reconciling that list and being able to reach people. And we’re still doing it right now. I think we’re at 72 out of 84. We provided the updated

list to the school, which will certainly help with future communications to the Class of ’75.” Hagan, Muller, Hussey, and their classmates did well enough to help the BC Class of 1975 earn “Class of the Year” with 47 donors to the 2019-20 Benedictine Fund. Second place went to the BC Class of 1976 with 42 donors. The BC Classes of 1980 and 2001 tied for third place with 38 donors. Starting with nine donors, Hagan never imagined the Class of ’75 would end up with 47 donors. When he first sent an email to his classmates in June the response was rather quiet. “I thought I’d get a rise out of somebody,” he said. “But there wasn’t much of a response. And then I figured out the way to do this is to reach out to people individually. “And then I thought to myself,

‘OK, well I know 40 people pretty well,’” he continued. “I’m going to go make some calls. And I know Person A knows Person B, and they’ve got a good relationship, so I said, ‘Look, I want you to go encourage/persuade them because their name is not yet on the donors’ list. I used that a couple of times and it worked. So there was a flurry of email. I would harass Greg (Markiton) weekly and I probably had him send me four updated donor lists to monitor our progress.” Hagan said he figured an increase from nine donors to 25 would be respectable, especially during the financial uncertainty of a pandemic. “After 10 days I thought, ‘We’re not going to get to 25.’ And then with two days to go in the fund drive, (BC Headmaster) Fr. Frank (Ziemkiewicz) sent out an email – much to my surprise continued on next page

continued from previous page

– that said the Class of ’75 had 40 donors. We were tied with the Class of ’76. At that point, I thought we might just be able to pull it out and we did.” “It looked like the Class of ’76 would be No. 1 this year but we managed to nip them at the finish line,” Hagan said, laughing. “It was good fun. I was very happy to do it for the school. I’ve always had a soft spot for the school. I was good friends with a number of the priests, in particular, Fr. Albert (Bickerstaff). He and I were lifelong friends. “We got a late start, and there was a mad dash to get it all done. It was encouraging as we went through it,” Hagan continued. “A lot of friendships were renewed. It was an activity that allowed a number of people to talk to each other who haven’t spoken in a long time.” Finishing with 47 donors, the BC Class of ’75 was recognized for its victory during BC’s Annual Alumni Association Dinner & Social on August 19th.

14

Hagan said he called Hussey and asked him to represent the BC Class of ’75 at BC’s Annual Alumni Association Dinner & Social. A tour of BC’s new Athletic Plaza and new turf field, Fr. Albert Field, was among the highlights of the evening. The Class of ’75 was recognized for its fundraising efforts. “(BC) is in our blood,” said Hussey, whose grandfathers, brothers and son attended BC. “For anybody that grew up Catholic in Savannah, Benedictine is the mecca. I’m very proud of those guys (the BC Class of 1976), too. They’re all our best friends. When you go to BC, you become friends with people at least in the next two classes. If you’re a sophomore, you’re buddies with freshmen and you’re close with juniors and seniors. All those guys from ’76, they’re all my best friends to this day. I have as many great friends from ’76 as I do ’75.” Muller and Hagan were unable to attend the Annual Alumni Association Dinner & Social but they recently had

lunch with Ziemkiewicz and Markiton, after which they took a guided tour of BC to rekindle memories and experience the new Brown STEM Wing. “It’s just very impressive what Fr. Frank and the team have done,” Muller said. “I tell you, I am just thrilled with the progress they’ve made and they’re going to continue to make. And we’ve shared a lot of that in the emails that we’ve sent out to people.” Despite a pandemic, BC began the 2020-21 school year with 412 Cadets, its largest enrollment in 20 years. This is the third consecutive year that BC has started a school year with more than 400 Cadets. “It’s a testament to the way the school has responded to the crisis,” Hussey said. “I am such a fan of the current administrative team. I think Fr. Frank, in my lifetime, might be the best thing that’s ever happened to BC. I am a huge fan of the clerical leadership and the lay leadership. It’s the finest I’ve seen in my Benedictine experience.” As BC continues to grow, Muller said his shared goal with Hagan and Hussey is to continue to grow the number of donors within the BC Class of ’75. “We’ve had 10 classmates pass away,” Muller said. “The number we look at is 96. I’m still working on it.

Walter Muller ‘75, Tom Hagan ‘75 and Father Frank

I’m up to 72 good addresses and emails. There are a couple we know that we’re never going to get. But I want to get to 80. I want to get to as many of them as I can. I just got another one the other day. I think we’re down to 13 that we think we might get, that we could get. But we’re still working on it.” Said Hussey, “We all end up all over the country and you get an effort like this going, and the momentum that you build, and the enthusiasm that you build, and the level of excitement about reaching back out and having these group emails where people are teasing and cutting up, it’s been a great experience for us as organizers. “The challenge is going to be carrying the enthusiasm over to next year as well,” Hussey continued. “It’s a highenergy effort. It’s hard for one person to keep that level of commitment and enthusiasm so you have to be able to spread the burden out. Tom’s a very unique guy. He’s a phenomenally successful, retired IBM career guy and was in middle management at IBM. He just knows how to get things done.” Throughout the process, Hagan said he reconnected with at least two dozen classmates whom he had not spoken to in 30-plus years. “That was good fun and very rewarding,” Hagan said. “People have broken the ice. If somebody sends an email there’s a fair number of responses now. At BC, you build a community of lifelong friends. That’s what it has proven to be. And this exercise reflects that friendship.” What is the greatest lesson Hagan learned from this endeavor? “Get a good email list,” he said, laughing. “That should be an activity for every class.” By Noell Barnidge

Dear members of the BC community, It is my distinct pleasure as Board Chair to report on another fabulous year at BC! And this progress has continued this year despite the many challenges of the pandemic. This continued ascendancy of Benedictine in our community is directly owing to the unwavering support and financial generosity of the many volunteers and financial contributors who give their time, treasure, and talent in so many ways in support of the administration and the mission of BC. In March, BC received certification from The Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS), the largest independent school accrediting organization in North America. To attain this lofty certification, BC voluntarily participated in a rigorous process that included both a thorough self-study that leads to institutional goals for strengthening mission fulfillment, and further hosted thirdparty external review from peer educational leaders. All aspects of academics and teaching, administration, school operations, financial controls, Board governance, etc. were thoroughly reviewed by the examiners. Our BC community should be very proud that our school has been acknowledged to be among the elite in the nation. Despite Covid’s impact on our businesses and households, your generous contributions to the Annual Fund allowed it to close its June 30 fiscal year at the highest level ever! At the same time, your continuing financial support to our Capital Campaign this past year has further propelled the transformation of facilities on the campus. Most recently, the Athletic Plaza featuring the concessions building behind the baseball diamond was completed. This plaza now creates a gateway from the parking lot into this first-class athletic venue and its ball fields. And with your further and continued financial backing, C Wing classrooms will be renovated, and parking lot and security enhancements will also be implemented, among others. Father Frank, Jacob Horne and the faculty and administration of Benedictine should be commended for their demonstrated commitment to the mission of the school, as they have successfully commenced the 2019-2020 school year despite the challenges of the pandemic. In fact, BC started this school year with its largest enrollment in over 20 years. This strong enrollment truly recognizes the value of a Benedictine education in Savannah! In closing, please be reminded to contribute to the Goal Scholarship Fund. It is an extremely easy process, done online, that costs you nothing, as it merely transfers a portion of state income tax you are already paying to Goal, earmarked for Benedictine, in furtherance of scholarship aid to young men who might not otherwise have the financial means to attend BC. Thank you again for your continued generous support of Benedictine! Forward, Always Forward!

What is a CLASS AGENT?

The Class Agent Program is comprised of committed and loyal alumni who represent their individual class years.  Class Agents are Benedictine Military School ambassadors, charged with helping to build stronger connection between alumni, classmates, and our school. Class Agents are some of our most valuable volunteers.  Job requirements are simple: a minimal time commitment and the interest to keep in touch with your classmates and friends.  Being a Class Agent is a great way to remain involved after graduation and you can be as active as your schedule will allow. 39

GOAL Student Testimony “I didn’t grow up with my Dad and most of the time he didn’t do much to show he cared. I go to BC to help me achieve a life that my Mom will be proud of. I know that all the sacrifices she makes aren’t in vain. I’m trying to make my life better and show my Mom that I can be a good man. After I graduate from BC, I plan to go to college either out of state or at Georgia Tech. I want to pursue a career in either aerospace engineering or in neurosurgery.”

a tribute to

Coach James Robert Walsh, Sr.

Coach Walsh was born in Philadelphia, Pa, where he attended Northeast Catholic High School and was a standout football player. He received a football scholarship to Auburn University, where he received a BA in Education. Coach Walsh played fullback for Auburn, rushing for 831 yards (5.2 yards per carry) and two touchdowns during his college career. In 1960, Coach Walsh married the love of his life, the former Barbara Ann Leonard of Columbus, Ga. Coach Walsh retired as one of the winningest football coaches in the state of Georgia with a record 234-113-6 for a winning percentage .671 over his 35 year career. He began his coaching career at St. AnnePacelli Catholic School in Columbus, Ga. where he served as the first head football coach of their new program. Coach Walsh coached there for 10 seasons with a record of 49-35-5 winning 61 percent of his games as he built the Pacelli football program. Coach Walsh took over the helm of the Benedictine football program in 1970 and served as the head football coach and athletic director for 25 years until 1994. Coach Walsh continued

serving as the athletic director until 2008. During his tenure as head football coach, he led the Cadets to a record of 185 wins (still a BC record), 82 losses, and 1 tie for a .692 winning percentage while playing in the highest classification in the Georgia High School Association. Known for his wishbone offense that pounded opponents and a tough, hardnosed defense, he led the Cadets to four Region Championships in 1977, 1978, 1979, and 1983. During his tenure, the Cadets won 10 city titles. He also led the Cadets to two undefeated seasons and was coach of the year six times. His BC teams also reached the state playoffs 12 different times. He had a record of 16-9-1 against our archrival Savannah High School is the state’s oldest rivalry. Coach Walsh’s career win/loss records against other notable football program include Beach (19-6), Brunswick (17-4), Buford (2-0), Glynn Academy (7-1), Groves (17-8), Jenkins (23-2), Johnson (4-3), McEachern (2-0), Mount De Sales (4-1), Northside Warner Robins (2-0), Statesboro (137), and Windsor Forest (19-4). Coach Walsh was inducted into the Greater Savannah Athletic Hall of Fame in 1997. The Savannah Sports Council honored him in 2004 with the John F. Hodges OASIS Award, which stands for Outstanding Achievement in Sports In Savannah. More importantly, Coach Walsh was a mentor and father figure to thousands of Cadets during his four decades of service to Benedictine. His toughlove approach in Benedictine’s Catholic, all-male environment was a perfect fit as he helped develop young boys into men. His players were drawn to him and they wanted to play hard for Coach Walsh. Discipline, hard work, and attention to detail were hallmarks of his teaching style that still carry on today through his former players. Coach Walsh is survived by his wife and six children, Jim Walsh, Jr. ‘80 (Rebecca) of Cumming, Margie All (Sigbert) of Townsend, Patrick Walsh ‘81 (Beth) of Richmond Hill, Billy Walsh of Savannah, Lenny Walsh of Savannah, and Wendy Stewart (Brandon) of Savannah. He is also survived by his grandchildren Ashley Nunnally, Sigbert "Shay" H. All ’06 , IV, James "Jake" R. Walsh, III, Erin Elizabeth Gregos, Bragan Walsh, Bailey Walsh, Brad Stewart ‘15, Casey Walsh, Sarah Stewart, Gavin Stewart ‘20, six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. 59

CLASS NOTES Roger Elmore ’66, founding member of the Benedictine Military School golf team, has been and is currently The Legends of Parris Island’s super senior club champion for 2017, 2018, and 2019. Richard Mangan ‘66 and Teresa Jaugstetter Mangan (St. Vincent’s Academy ‘67) celebrated their 53rd Wedding Anniversary in June and welcomed their first greatgrandchild, Rose Teresa Rodriguez, in March. Additionally, Richard & Teresa have 3 sons and nine grandchildren. Unfortunately, Teresa sustained fatal injuries in a fall at home during the 4th of July weekend. Teresa’s SVA class and Richard’s BC class have both rallied to support Richard and his family. The true essence of the Benedictine Brotherhood was palpable in the love, prayers, and support provided to Teresa’s family. Richard also sends his appreciation for the thoughtful notes received from Father Frank in response to multiple donations made to Benedictine by Brother Cadets in Teresa’s name.
