MISSION

Benedictine Military School is a Catholic, Benedictine, college preparatory school which forms and educates young men from diverse backgrounds, supports a deeper commitment to their faith, prepares them for life through a quality academic program, and instills leadership skills through a JROTC program, athletics, extra-curricular activities and community service. Through instruction and discipline, we seek to form men of virtue and integrity who are prepared for lifelong learning and service to their faith and civic communities.

These truly are good days and I thank God and I thank you for being so generous to Benedictine. During these past years, we have been able to unveil one new addition after another. In succeeding years we have seen the renovation of our academic building including “The John ‘59 & Marilyn Brent Hall”, our old “B” Wing; the construction of the 19,000 square foot academic addition named the “Edward J. Brown, Jr. ‘33 & Edward J. Brown III ‘66 STEM Wing”; and this past summer, we saw the completion of the “Fr. Albert Bickerstaff Field” which is an excellent artificial turf field for our junior varsity and freshmen football players, as well as our varsity and junior varsity lacrosse and soccer teams. Lights have been added to the Ricky McAllaster Lacrosse Field the Brian Parker ’10 Baseball Field as well as the expansion of the lacrosse field to regulation size. Again, I have so many to thank and in particular Mr. Will Dorminy and Mr. & Mrs. Mario De La Guardia ‘79, we have board members to thank for their involvement in these gifts. It is amazing that these major improvements have been done without occurring any long-term debt to the school. Our new Athletic Plaza is under construction and will feature a concession stand, restrooms, and new landscaping near our athletic complex.

FROM THE HEADMASTER

Dear Friends of BC,

Thinking back during the planning phase of our capital campaign, our priorities were, (1) the improvement of our academic facilities, (2) the increase of our endowment and (3) the upgrade of our athletic facilities. Progress on priorities (1) and (3) as described above are apparent. An unsung hero during these past years has been our endowment. During the past dozen years, it has grown from $1.2 to $4.75 million. Like so much of BC, we still have a way to go before we reach an endowment that would allow us to confidently manage our future challenges but we are in a far better position now than before to provide the financial assistance for a future generation of Cadets and necessary upgrade to our existing structures that will be required in time. Our greatest source of satisfaction are the college acceptances that our graduates received during this past year. The Class of 2019 saw 17 admitted to the University of Georgia, 15 admitted to Georgia Tech and one admitted to each the Naval Academy, West Point, the Merchant Marine Academy, and the Coast Guard Academy. As our Cadets join the great tradition of BC grads, they do so with the confidence of being well prepared for their college and professional futures. They are well aware that there is a BC alumni network standing by to advise them. Again, I have so many to thank in this respect. May God’s blessings be with you. The BC Class of 2019 completed more than 10,000 service hours to the Savannah Community.

Benedictine’s transformation continues! At the time that I had the honor of joining the school’s Board of Directors, and prior to the announcement of the Forward Always Forward, Capital Campaign, the BC campus was in many respects the same as when I graduated in 1973. Now, five years after the commencement of the capital campaign, the overwhelming year-over-year support of the BC community has allowed, in summary, the addition of the Brown STEM Wing (increasing the academic building footprint by 50%), renovations to A and B Wing classrooms, roof replacements for the cafeteria and academic buildings and much more. With over $14.5 million raised to date, this past year saw the installation of the Field Turf CORE synthetic turf field (the same as in MercedesBenz stadium in Atlanta), visitor side bleachers, lighting for both the lacrosse field and baseball diamond, and renovation of the natural turf lacrosse field.

Dear Members of the BC Community,

Accordingly, on behalf of the Board of Directors, I wish to extend gratitude and thanks for your financial support, without which, the above accomplishments would not have occurred. Now, with your continued support going forward, additional pending and/or planned projects will come to fruition including renovations to C-Wing classrooms, parking lot improvements and security enhancements. Our work is not concluded, and this campus transformation will continue forward with your continued generosity and support. Beyond the tangible and visible improvements to the Benedictine campus, the school continues forward in its mission of providing an excellent catholic, college preparatory curriculum and education which is placing BC graduates in our nation’s top schools and service academies. I truly believe that the Benedictine education enables our graduates to later become our future civic, business, and service related leaders. The Board strongly supports the efforts of our fine academic and administrative staff who endeavor to provide the best possible education for our students. In closing, please allow me to remind everyone of the tremendous impact that the GOAL Scholarship Program has in assisting young men to attend BC who might otherwise not have financial means. Your redirection of a portion of your state income tax to GOAL costs you nothing, while significantly boosting the pool of overall financial aid sources to assist students. This publication provides much-deserved recognition to the many contributors and faithful donors who support BC and its mission. Again, thank you all for your continued support! BC’S CAPITAL CAMPAIGN REACHES $14 MILLION By Noell Barnidge

Benedictine Military School’s Forward, Always Forward Capital Campaign, which publicly began in August of 2014 and has grown from $4.1 million in cash and pledges to $14.6 million presently, is an ambitious endeavor that has been built on a foundation of financial stability. Not only is the capital campaign the largest project in the 117-year history of the school, but it is being achieved without incurring long-term debt. “The fact that we have not involved ourselves in substantial financing of our projects is a further feather in the cap for the articulation and the credibility of this campaign to our potential donors and, for that matter, to our existing donors,” Benedictine Military School Headmaster Fr. Frank Ziemkiewicz, O.S.B., said. “As we continue in the final phases of this project, we need to continue to ensure our donors, our parents, our alumni, our board that we are holding to the guidelines that have been given to us. And, for that matter, much is owed to the Abbey (in Latrobe, Pa.) for providing us both manpower and the initial financial resources that allowed us to embark on this capital campaign. Archabbot Douglas (Nowicki, O.S.B.) is to be thanked for these

efforts and for convincing the community that we were a credible investment for the Abbey’s efforts.” BC has proven itself to be a credible investment in the eyes of the community, whose overwhelmingly supportive response to this calling will determine the value of a Benedictine education for future generations. The list of completed projects is extensive. Some of the highlights in 2019 include the completion of Savannah’s largest NCAA regulationsize synthetic-turf athletic field for soccer, lacrosse and football; the addition of 1,600 new bleacher seats on the east side of the field; expansion and lighting of the Ricky McAllaster Lacrosse Field to a regulation size; and the lighting of the Brian Parker ’10 Baseball Field (2019). “The 2018-19 school year was a whirlwind of progress and construction on campus,” Benedictine Military School Director of Advancement Mr. Greg Markiton ’92 said. “Once the Brown STEM Wing was fully funded in August of 2018, current board member and BC graduate Mr. Marty Hogan ’86 and his team of highly motivated volunteers, including Mr. Jason Barlow, Mr. Richard Geriner

’86, Dr. Frank Scarbrough, Mr. Tim Strickland ’85, and Mr. Brooks Zeigler ’01, began raising money for the turf field. We are so grateful for the time and energy they invested into our school community. “Their leadership and passion encouraged so many of our parents, alumni, and friends to contribute to the transformation of our athletic complex, which included two $1 million contributions from Mr. Will Dorminy, and Mr. and Mrs. Mario De La Guardia ’79,” Markiton continued. “Today, because of the overwhelming support we’ve received, our 400 Cadets and so many other young people in the Savannah community are enjoying playing and practicing at this firstclass facility named in honor of Fr. Albert Bickerstaff, O.S.B. Fr. Albert was a teacher, coach, and mentor for thousands of us BC Cadets and he would be so proud of this version of BC.” In 2018, the original biology and chemistry laboratories were updated into four brand-new classrooms and Phase II of the 19,000-square-foot Brown STEM Wing was completed. In 2017, Phase I was completed. “Our board has been absolutely enthusiastic about the further development of this school,”

we knew we could to pay the construction loan back,” Evans said of the Brown STEM Wing. “That’s the same approach that’s going on with athletics. We raised the money to the field in. We raised the money to construct the bleachers. That was the next thing we said we could do. Everything we’re doing, we’re trying to think 10, 15, 20 years down the road so that we’re not hemming in the next people running this school.” With an expanded campaign goal of $18 million, Benedictine Military School seeks $4 million to finish its remaining projects: $1 million to renovate the last remaining classrooms within the academic building; $2.5 million to improve the campus environment and security by rebuilding the front entrance and installing a new perimeter fence with a guard gate, while also expanding and repaving the parking lot from 210 spaces to 325; $500,000 to complete the athletic complex, including a concession stand, restroom, and athletic plaza. “We look forward with gratefulness and excitement to meet our goal with the help of our loyal supporters who truly believe in the mission of Benedictine Military School,” Markiton said.

Ziemkiewicz said. “They recognized the need for it and they were willing to support it. And that support has been absolutely critical. I can’t thank the likes of Mr. Bill Schmidt, Mr. Mark Shawe and so many others enough for the leadership that they have given to us.” In 2015, BC leased seven acres of unused land to HealthSouth (now Encompass Health), which will generate revenue for BC’s endowment to support student financial aid. In 2014, B-Wing was completely renovated with modern classrooms and renamed Brent Hall in honor of Mr. and Mrs. John Brent ’54. “We did not borrow more than the pledge balances, or how much money we had raised,” Benedictine Military School Director of Operations and Finance Mrs. Barbara Evans said. “That way, when all those pledges are paid off, that construction loan is paid off. So we’re zero debt. We didn’t have to take out any loans beyond, because the members of the BC family contributed the money.” Evans said BC hopes to begin construction on the parking lot, which will include components of security, in the summer of 2021. “We never committed to more construction costs than what

FAMILY MAKES

LEGACY GIFT TO BENEDICTINE

Mr. Fretwell Goer “Buzz” Crider, Jr., Benedictine Military School Class of 1971, and his wife, Sandy, made the ultimate legacy gift by joining BC’s 1902 Heritage Society. A legacy gift is a planned future gift that designates some part of an individual’s estate as a donation to a nonprofit. Legacy gifts enable individuals to create a powerful philanthropic legacy by making a direct impact on the causes that are important to them. The 1902 Heritage Society recognizes those who have made a commitment to Benedictine through a planned gift, through bequests (gifts by will), life insurance policies and life income gifts (annuities and trusts). “I’m the person I am today, whether it be personally or professionally, as a result of my time at Benedictine,” said Crider, 66, a salesman for Veritiv Corporation, a Fortune 500 company that is a leading North American business-to-business distributor of packaging, and print and publishing products. He lives and works in Savannah for Veritiv’s corporate office in Jacksonville, Fla. Crider was nicknamed “Buzz” by his mother because “I was running all over the house when I was a youngster,” he said. “The next thing I know, I’m Buzz, and I’ve been that ever since.” Crider has a lifelong connection with Benedictine. He and Sandy are celebrating 41 years of marriage this year. They met at the wedding of his best friend, Joe Herb (BC Class of 1970), and “we fell for each other right away,” he said. They have two children: Matthew (BC Class of 2001) and Brian (BC Class of 2002). Crider’s brother, Doyle, graduated from BC in 1972. Their uncle, John Lyons, graduated from BC in 1941.

“He fought in World War II,” Crider proudly said. “When he came back from World War II, he got a scholarship to The Citadel.” Crider, a past board member of the Benedictine Alumni Association, said leaving a portion of his estate to Benedictine Military School was a logical decision. “My wife is committed to Benedictine, too,” he said. “She loves Benedictine. She went to Savannah Christian years ago but she fell in love with BC. She didn’t have much of a choice, you know what I mean? It wasn’t a hard sell when it came time for our sons to go to high school.” Through the years, the monks have changed but the mission of Benedictine has remained the same: to form and educate young men from diverse backgrounds, support a deeper commitment to their faith, prepare them for life through a quality academic program, and instill leadership skills through a JROTC program, athletics, extra-curricular activities and community service. Crider said he and Sandy had no doubt that their sons would thrive at Benedictine. “The older you get, the more you realize how important an education is, a Catholic education, an education like Benedictine and what comes along with it,” he said. “Sandy and I have done plenty for our boys over the years, and we plan to continue doing more for them now and in the future, but I just felt like I wanted to leave something for Benedictine, which gave so much to me. And my wife agreed.” Crider said the late Fr. Albert Bickerstaff, O.S.B., had a profound impact on his life. Fr. Albert, as he is affectionately known, was a

beloved teacher, coach, mentor and counselor to thousands of BC Cadets. He came to BC in 1967 when the Benedictines from Latrobe, Pa., assumed the responsibility of Benedictine Military School. Fr. Albert served BC until his passing from cancer in 2003. BC’s new synthetic-turf athletic field is named in his memory. “Fr. Albert Bickerstaff had a big influence on me, and on a lot of my classmates,” Crider said. “Fr. Albert, my freshman year, came down to Benedictine from Latrobe, Pa., and Benedictine flourished with the Benedictines from Latrobe coming in. What a guy he was. I’m looking through an annual right now, looking at him, and he was probably in his late ‘20s, and here we are, 16, 17, 18, and we could relate to him. You know how it is. Not that you couldn’t relate to the other teachers but when they’re the younger person on the staff they go the extra mile to reach out to you. My whole experience at Benedictine, I had good days and bad days but the good days far, far outweighed the good days.” At BC, Crider played football and baseball. “I’ve got the annual open in front of me,” he said, laughing. “Let me see what Buzz Crider did. Honor Roll. Spanish Club. Student Council. Honor Society. Boys State Delegate. You don’t need all this. ‘B’ Club that was the letterman club. Optimist Youth. Captain of the football team in 1971. We went 8-2, Jim Walsh’s first year. We had a heck of a year.” Crider said Fr. Albert wanted him to attend the University of Notre Dame but Crider said he knew in his heart that his path was from Benedictine was onward to Athens.

“He knew right away that I was college material,” Crider said of Bickerstaff. “I graduated from the University of Georgia in 1975 and a lot of that had to do with his influence. He loved Notre Dame, but I wasn’t going to Notre Dame. I was going to Georgia.” Crider earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism at UGA before working in the advertising business (radio and television). After a few years, he “got into the paper packaging business and I’ve been in that ever since, 38 years,” he said. His days at Benedictine were magical, Crider said. The memories remain vivid. “Just the relationships I forged in my four years at Benedictine with my classmates and teammates and the faculty and the coaches and the monks … it was just four of the greatest years of my life,” he said. “I just couldn’t really pinpoint one thing. I played for Jim Walsh his first year. That was exciting. That was memorable. I played for Vic Mell his last year. That was exciting and memorable. I got to know the priests there and, I’ll be honest with you, they made me the man I am today.” Crider said he looks at Benedictine now with all of its growth, from an enrollment of 400-plus Cadets to the creation of the Brown STEM Wing, and marvels at how far BC has come in such a relatively short time. The catalyst, be believes, is the people who have a passion for BC. “BC grads, that’s all I hang around with,” he said. “I’m very, very selective. I’ve got enough friends and they’re all BC guys. My friends, over the years, have remained BC guys. BC is like a big fraternity. I wasn’t in a fraternity at the University of Georgia. BC is like a big fraternity. We’ll welcome anybody. We’ll welcome you, man. You don’t have to be Catholic. You don’t have to be Irish. You don’t have to be this or that or the other. We’ll welcome you. If you want to come into our family, you come on in. We’ll welcome you with open arms.”

BANDS & CHEFS On Saturday, April 13, 2019, Benedictine Military School & the BC Athletic Association hosted a new spring event, Bands & Chefs, presented by Gretschgear.com. The evening was a one-of-a-kind outdoor food and music experience. 3 incredible local bands rocked the stage, “Rose Hill Serenade” an Allman Brothers Tribute project, Prime Real Estate a musical power trio, featuring BC music teacher, Cyril Durant and The Hypnotics a three piece band featuring music from the 50s and 60s. Delicious food was served by local Chefs Kirk Blaine ‘03 of Howling Hound and Castaways, Dee Carver ’81 and

Dan Smart ’97 of Down South Sauce Company, Bryan Gray ‘03 and Brandon Mell ’03, of B Local Catering and Chef Bret Knat with the Prowl food truck.
