MISSION

Benedictine Military School is a Catholic, Benedictine, college preparatory school which forms and educates young men from diverse backgrounds, supports a deeper commitment to their faith, prepares them for life through a quality academic program, and instills leadership skills through a JROTC program, athletics, extra-curricular activities and community service. Through instruction and discipline, we seek to form men of virtue and integrity who are prepared for life-long learning and service to their faith and civic communities.

FROM THE HEADMASTER

Dear Friends of BC, Thanks to you, BC is blessed with the finest support imaginable.

Because of your generosity, we have been able to complete our 19,000 sq. ft. Brown STEM wing and not incur debt. Thanks to your belief in BC through the Annual Fund, the GOAL Scholarship program and gifts to BC, we have been able to grow our enrollment to capacity; all of this while seeing our graduates admitted to our country’s finest colleges to include Notre Dame, the University of Georgia and Georgia Tech.

Our Annual Audit was just completed and for the eighth consecutive year, we have shown a positive balance all the while, growing our endowment. This is especially important because our intent is to eventually use the income generated from the endowment to supplement our student financial aid. During the past dozen years, our endowment has grown from $1.2 million to $3.5 million. Our goal is to raise it to $5 million and then begin using it to augment our financial aid program.

Thanks to the quality of our academic instruction, JROTC and athletic programs, we have been able to achieve our long desired goal of being “The 400”. We have been most pleased with the quality of our students. We are of the belief that if we are to continue to attract the high caliber of student, it is critical that we continue to modernize our 1963 era campus. As mentioned, we have just put the finishing touches on our Brown STEM Wing and in the process, converted our former chemistry and biology labs into four language classrooms.

These converted classrooms come with all of the technological upgrades seen in the STEM and “B” wings, Brent Hall, only “C” wing is awaiting the upgrade and we are planning to do that within the next several years.

Having addressed our most immediate academic concerns, our next upgrade is our athletic field. Funds are now on hand allowing us to begin this renovation which will be a stepped process leading eventually to a stadium. With this phase which we will have completed by late spring/early summer, we will have replaced the existing natural turf field with artificial turf. This will allow us to play our varsity and JV soccer & lacrosse games here at BC and our JV & freshmen football games. Needless to say, we are excited.

This excitement would not be possible without the support you have given to BC during these many years. I can’t thank you enough for your prayers, advice and contributions that you have given BC during these past years. Thank you for all that you have done for BC; my prayers are with you.

BC was awarded the 2017-18 Director’s Cup for having the #1 Boys’ Athletic Program in the state in Class AA.

It is truly amazing! A mere four years ago, Father Frank took to the podium on the school plaza and announced to the gathered BC faithful and news media of an ambitious Capital Campaign that the Board and Administration was going to undertake in further advancement and transformation of the school and its facilities.

Fast-forward to present day, and with $11 million having already been raised, the new Brown STEM Wing has been constructed, and A-Wing and B-Wing classrooms have been renovated and operational. And now, we move forward to the final phase of this campaign to accomplish the installation of the synthetic turf field, provide greatly needed parking lot renovations, security enhancements, and the classroom renovations in C-Wing.

Of course, this progress has only been possible by the financial generosity and volunteerism of the many contributors and donors who repeatedly answer the call and demonstrate support for Benedictine and its programs. Much-deserved recognition is given in this publication to the many faithful donors. It is through your efforts that BC can continue to strengthen, succeed, and remain the premier institution in our community of which we are most proud.

Last, let me thank you for the significant impact to financial aid that your redirection of a portion of your state income tax through the GOAL Scholarship Program has been for Benedictine. While this costs us donors nothing, it greatly increases the overall financial aid resources available for students, and takes pressure off of other sources of tuition assistance. Now that the Georgia Gen. Assembly has nearly doubled the size of the credits available statewide, your GOAL redirection for 2019 can be even more powerful and impactful! FORWARD, ALWAYS FORWARD CAPITAL CAMPAIGN

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN HITS $11 MILLION The Benedictine Military School community has raised more than $11 million during the Forward, Always Forward Capital Campaign; the largest fundraising effort in the 116-year history of the school. The campaign was announced four years ago on August 21, 2014. “‘Forward, Always Forward’ is an accurate description of the determination of the Benedictine community to make this vision a reality,” Benedictine Headmaster Father Frank Ziemkiewicz said. “We set our goals high and invited people to join us. So many have partnered with us to enhance the lives of our current Cadets and I am so very grateful for their belief and generous support.”

Phase I of the campaign is fully funded and provided for the completion of several crucial projects including the 19,000 square foot Brown STEM Wing, new roofs on

the academic building and cafeteria, lights on the athletic field, new endowed scholarships, updated high-voltage power lines throughout campus, a Learning Center for students, improvements to the baseball field and the expansion of our music program with a national partnership.

The funds raised to date have been contributed by over 1,000 members of the Benedictine Military School community including parents, alumni, board members, faculty and friends. Instrumental in the success of the campaign have been the first three $1,000,000+ gifts in the school’s history by Mr. & Mrs. Edward J. Brown III ’66, the John & Marilyn Brent ’59 Trust, and Mr. & Mrs. Will Dorminy.

Phase II projects will include the construction of Savannah’s first NCAA regulation-size synthetic turf athletic field for soccer, lacrosse,

and football with bleachers for home fans and visitors, which will lay the foundation for a future stadium complex; rebuilding the front entrance of the campus, installing a new perimeter fence with a guard gate while also expanding and repaving the parking lot; and renovating the remaining classrooms within the academic building.

These classroom experiences will serve our young men as they pursue their tertiary education and their successes within our community. On behalf of the faculty, I would like to thank our donors for their support of our great institution as we continue to shape the future leaders of our area.”

The fundraising goal for Phase II is $4 million. The plan is to complete these last three projects

by August 2020 with construction beginning on the synthetic turf field in early 2019.

$1 MILLION Benedictine Military School is humbled to announce a $1 million matching gift pledge from the Dorminy family for the Forward, Always Forward Capital Campaign.

The campaign surpassed the $11 million benchmark earlier this month making it the most successful campaign in the school’s 116-year history. This is the third $1 million commitment made during the capital campaign and demonstrates the community’s belief in the mission and vision of Benedictine Military School.

With this new $1 million matching pledge, all new pledges to the capital campaign will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $1 million.

This fall, Headmaster Father Frank Ziemkiewicz, announced the final three projects which will close out the campaign: a synthetic turf field, improved security/parking, and classroom renovations.

Will Dorminy, who visited campus in November, said he is impressed with Benedictine’s progress. “The school develops young men with character, values, and discipline,” Will Dorminy said. “I believe our country needs more Benedictine Military School graduates, and our family is excited

to make this investment in their mission.”

“We are most grateful to the Dorminy family for their incredible generosity to BC,” Ziemkiewicz said. “The Dorminy family came to BC inspired by its traditions and hallmarks, and the support they have seen from our BC parents and

YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU Josh Mallard graduated from Benedictine in 1997. He attended the University of Georgia on a football scholarship and was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the 2002 NFL Draft.

He played professional football for nine seasons and today is the owner of Savannah’s DataOne Merchant Services. Josh has established a scholarship at BC through his will and is now the youngest member of the 1902 Heritage Society at Benedictine.

“My parents sacrificed to send me to BC,” Mallard said.

“I wouldn’t be where I am in life without Benedictine. Not only did BC prepare me for the University of Georgia and NFL, it prepared me for my time after college in the business word. To me, it wasn’t a difficult decision to add Benedictine to my will. Anyone who has had the experiences I’ve had should try to

offer that to the next generation of Cadets. It is something I think everyone should do.

“I wanted to leave something behind so someone could have the experiences I had at Benedictine: the lifelong friendships, the top-rated education, and the connections in the business world,” Mallard continued. “The scholarship will be used for that young man that maybe just needs a little financial help. He doesn’t have the funds but he has the heart, the brains, and would represent Benedictine well. I would like to give him an opportunity that maybe he wouldn’t otherwise have.”
