MISSION

Benedictine Military School is a Catholic, Benedictine, college preparatory school which forms and educates young men from diverse backgrounds, supports a deeper commitment to their faith, prepares them for life through a quality academic program, and instills leadership skills through a JROTC program, athletics, extra-curricular activities and community service. Through instruction and discipline, we seek to form men of virtue and integrity who are prepared for life-long learning and service to their faith and civic communities.

FROM THE HEADMASTER

Dear Friends of BC, 2016 – 2017 was a blessed year for BC leaving us with much to be thankful for. BC has made substantial progress during these past several years and little, if any of this progress would have happened without your support; for this I am most grateful.

In January, Phase I of the Edward Brown STEM wing was opened while during the summer, the balance of the science rooms were either completed or the funds were pledged for Phase II. Both our football and soccer teams won their respective State Championships. This past year saw our seventh consecutive audit showing us to have a positive cash balance with the exception of “Deferred Maintenance”. We continue to realize the benefits of having the Health South Rehabilitation as a tenant on our southern acreage. These additional cash streams are being used to help fund our Student Aid and Deferred Maintenance endowments. For the past nine years BC has been touting “THE 400” logo on our advertisements. This year, we are there. We have grown our enrollment from 285 students in 2010 to more than 400 Cadets this year.

A great deal of thanks is in order for the excellent efforts of Coach Danny Britt who has so well served as both Head Football coach and Athletic Director for the past six years. The 2016 season saw Coach Britt win his second Class AA State Championship. Under his leadership as AD, our soccer team, led by Coach Charlie Moore won the State AA Championship this past spring. For the fifth straight year, BC was recognized as the #1 Boys’ Athletic Program in Southeast Georgia by the Georgia Athletic Directors Association.

With the end of the Academic Year, Mr. Dennis Daly, who has so effectively served as Principal for the past two years, stepped down to enjoy his retirement. During the previous two years, Mr. Daly, taught in the English Department and served as the Curriculum Director. I am most grateful for his excellent service to BC and wish him and his wife Sandy good health, God’s blessing and happiness in his retirement.

On a sadder note, shortly after the beginning of this current school year, Mr. Bill Schmitt who for seven years served as BC’s Board Chairman died after a long struggle with cancer. The Board, led by Mr. Schmitt was instrumental in guiding BC on to the successful path it currently enjoys, his leadership and friendship will be greatly missed. Our condolences are with his wife Mary Ann and their family. May he rest in God’s peace.

Thanks to the excellent efforts of so many noted in this report, BC can afford to take satisfaction in its many achievements during these past few years. We know too that significant challenges await us. I am most grateful that we have such a fine team of committed supporters to face these challenges.

FROM THE BOARD CHAIR

Dear Members of the BC Community, With the 2017-18 school year off to a great start, several events highlight BC’s continuing success and ascendancy among area high schools. First, the campaign to grow enrollment to “The 400” came to fruition in late August as the student body began the school year 400 strong. This speaks for itself as to the desirability of BC’s faith-based and values-oriented education within the Savannah area.

On Oct. 7, Archabbot Douglas R. Nowicki, O.S.B., visited the school from Latrobe, Pa., for a community reception in honor of the Benedictine Monks of Savannah. This event was significant for many reasons. First, it reflects on our school’s strengthening ties with St. Vincent Archabbey and the Archabbot’s continuing strong support of our school. For those gathered, Archabbot Douglas celebrated Mass and later spoke of the history of the Benedictine Order in Savannah.

The Mass was also followed by a social gathering and dinner in the academic building. This event highlighted the additions of Father JeanLuc Zadroga and Brothers David Klecker and Matthew Hershey to our priory and campus.

On Oct. 2, a breakfast was held in the cafeteria celebrating the GOAL donors and the students currently benefiting from this program.

This event gave donors a chance to casually converse with students over breakfast, learn of the students’ scholastic and career ambitions, and to truly appreciate the impact the GOAL program has on BC. This program is making it possible for these students to obtain the benefits of a Benedictine education who might not otherwise attend BC, but for GOAL. Once you have met these young men, you realize that they fully embrace and value their BC educational opportunity, and you further recognize that they represent our future businessmen, military leaders and professionals.

Since a redirection of a portion of your state income tax to this program costs you nothing, and gains you an additional itemized deduction, I encourage you to “fall in line” and join the many other alumni and supporters who stand behind this program. Please further realize that the strength of GOAL at BC contributes to the overall financial aid resources available, and takes pressure off of other sources of tuition assistance.

This fall, we further celebrate BC Headmaster Fr. Frank Ziemkiewicz’s 10-year anniversary of his arrival to BC! Without a doubt, BC has grown and prospered these past years under his strong and tireless leadership. Thank you for providing Fr. Frank the backing and support to grow the school and succeed in its mission. Also, congratulations and thanks to Principal Jacob Horne and Assistant Principal Kevin Farmer ’92, who have assumed their new positions of leadership for BC with enthusiasm and deep commitment. As of this writing, further congratulations to Coach Danny Britt and the football team on another undefeated season, as well as the other coaches, staff and team members who again made BC the No. 1 Boys’ Athletic Program in Southeast Georgia this past year.

Lastly, this publication gives recognition to the many contributors who repeatedly demonstrate support for this school and its mission to provide an outstanding college preparatory education for these young men. Ultimately, it is because of you, your financial contributions, and the efforts of all the parents, volunteers, alumni, friends and committees at BC that this school can continue to strengthen, succeed, and remain the institution in which we are most proud. FORWARD, ALWAYS FORWARD CAPITAL CAMPAIGN

FORWARD, ALWAYS FORWARD

CAMPAIGN ECLIPSES

$8.5 MILLION In August 2014, Benedictine Headmaster Fr. Frank Ziemkiewicz, O.S.B. announced the Forward, Always Forward Capital Campaign; the largest fundraising effort in the 115 year history of the school. The campaign has raised more than $8.5 million which is an indicator of the belief and support from our generous parents, alumni, and friends.

The first phase of the campaign has supported several exciting improvements to Benedictine including: the opening of Phase I of the 19,000 square foot Brown STEM Wing, the complete renovation of six classrooms inside one of

our academic halls, the growth of our endowment fund through the development of leased lands, a new academic learning center and resource program, a new music program, significant improvements to the baseball field, new stadium lights on the athletic field, and the upgrade and replacement of all of our campus power supply.

“We are in the final stretch of this first phase of the campaign, which we will close without incurring any debt to the school.

Our goal is to raise $350,000 by December 31 which will allow us to complete Phase II of the Brown

STEM Wing and have all four science laboratories operational by March, 2018. All of our focus will be on reaching this goal so we can move on to the next phase of our campaign. We’ve been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from the Benedictine community in Savannah and we hope they will Come Fall In Line and propel us over the finish line,” says Headmaster Fr. Frank.

A SON'S GIFT Clayton Doherty ’67 and Pamela Brandt will leave a legacy to Benedictine. They are the newest members of the 1902 Heritage Society. Clay, a member of the BC Class of 1967, was recently celebrating his 50th Reunion Weekend when he informed Fr. Frank of his family’s intentions. “We wanted to find a way to honor my Dad, COL Clayton M. Doherty, USAF who was a career military man, and my Mom, Katherine Doherty.

We felt that Benedictine was the right place to do that. By naming Benedictine in our will, a portion of our legacy gift will be used to establish a scholarship in my

parent’s honor which will allow more young men the opportunity to earn a Benedictine education. We have also designated some of the funds for capital projects or other top priorities at the discretion of the Headmaster,” said Doherty.

The “The Future is WOW!” auction was held on March 4, 2017. The evening grossed over $110,000 plus an additional $65,000 for the Fund a Need to purchase new COWS (Computers On Wheels) or mobile computer labs for our Cadets.
