Mission Benedictine Military School is a Catholic, Benedictine, college preparatory school which forms and educates young men from diverse backgrounds, supports a deeper commitment to their faith, prepares them for life through a quality academic program, and instills leadership skills through a JROTC program, athletics, extra-curricular activities and community service. Through instruction and discipline, we seek to form men of virtue and integrity who are prepared for life-long learning and service to their faith and civic communities.

Office of the Headmaster Dear parents and friends of BC, Thanks to you, the landscape of Benedictine is changing for the first time since the early 90s, when the athletic center was built under the headmastership of Fr. David, O.S.B. The Brown STEM Wing, named in honor of Edward J. Brown, Jr., ’33 and Edward J. Brown III ’66, makes real BC’s commitment to further upgrade its Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (STEM) programs.

With the exterior of the building now taking its final shape, and its math rooms and computer laboratory soon to get their finishing touches, we are substantially enhancing the learning environment for our students. Phase I of the Brown STEM Wing will await the arrival of our Cadets when they return from their Christmas break and begin their new year.

These new classrooms will complement the recently upgraded classrooms in Brent Hall, named in honor of John ’59 and Marilyn Brent, formerly the B-wing. They eagerly await the completion of the four science labs/classrooms, which will occupy the back half of the Brown STEM Wing. When you have the chance, please take the time to view our Atrium which divides the wing’s two halves. This space, open to the sky, will not only warm the lobby in sunlight but give our students a daily glimpse of God’s natural beauty.

If we take pride in our new building, we do so in the spirit of Thanksgiving. It was only through the generosity of the Brown family, St. Vincent Archabbey, the commitment of our Board and our many donors that this Brown STEM Wing is possible. This STEM Wing sits on a solid foundation thanks to you. Thanks for your confidence in BC to educate your sons and thanks for the financial resources you have provided, which have made this new building possible.

The Brown Stem Wing is one more step in our ongoing efforts to further upgrade the Benedictine campus and its offerings. Thank you for your generosity and your patience to see this renovation come to realization. In the words of Archabbot Boniface Wimmer, we continue to move “Forward, always forward.”

From the Board Chair Dear members of the BC community, This is truly an exciting time at Benedictine with the upcoming completion of Phase I of the Brown STEM Wing addition! Due to the great progress of this construction effort, the initial five classrooms of Phase I will be open on Jan. 2, 2017. A few months later, the 100-seat lecture hall will also be completed and placed into service. The Brown STEM Wing addition will increase by 50 percent the footprint of the original academic building built in 1963. It is a bright and modern facility that will open seamlessly into the hallways of the existing A Wing. Phase II, for which pledges and donations are still being gathered, will complete the Brown STEM Wing with four science labs. The addition of this facility to our campus certainly positions Benedictine at a competitive advantage among other area high schools.

There is truth to the old adage “it takes a village.” Benedictine has and continues to rely upon its many supporters, donors and contributors for its achievements and successes. The Brown STEM Wing would not be possible without the many contributions and pledges, large and small, which have enabled BC to commit to such an ambitious project. Beyond this construction endeavor, the BC Alumni Association, Athletic Association, Auction Committee, PTO, alumni, parents and friends of Benedictine continue to strongly support the school, administration, faculty and students as BC moves forward in fulfilling its mission.

For the past two summers, the members of the Board, at their own expense, have traveled to Latrobe, Pa., to hold planning retreats at St. Vincent’s Archabbey in order to spend focused time on strategic planning, budgets and policy matters. The Board remains most appreciative of Archabbott Douglas Nowicki’s generous hospitality, his direct participation and attendance in all of our planning sessions, and his continuing support of the school. These retreats have not only been productive from a planning standpoint, but have also served to strengthen our ties with St. Vincent’s. The Board is comprised of committed and hard-working members who give their time selflessly, and I am privileged to have the opportunity to serve with this motivated group. Fr. Frank Ziemkiewicz and Mr. Dennis Daly continue to provide strong leadership at the top, and they are supported by many dedicated administrators and faculty.

Many thanks to the generosity of all the contributors and donors mentioned in this publication who continue to make all things possible at Benedictine. As we near year end, I would be remiss if I did not stress the merits of the GOAL Scholarship Program. GOAL allows you to redirect a portion of your state income tax, that you are paying anyway, to GOAL, administered by BC itself, and which provides need-based financial aid to assist public school students, both Catholic and non-Catholic, to attend Benedictine. Accordingly, your GOAL contribution does not cost you any additional state tax, but actually creates for you an itemized deduction on your federal return!

I am amazed at what a win-win proposition this program provides you, but most importantly, provides the opportunity for a deserving young man to attend and receive a much-valued Benedictine education. It only takes several minutes online to complete your GOAL application at www.goalscholarship.org. and designate “Benedictine.” Due to the statewide popularity of this program, all 2017 applications must be pre-filed by year end 2016. As with any tax matter, please consult your CPA as needed. The availability of these GOAL funds each year greatly improves the totality of scholarship and aid resources available, thereby reducing pressure on other aid sources.

Thank you in advance for considering a donation to GOAL. The school continues to seek commercial tenants for the several remaining leasable parcels in Benedictine Commons, which adjoins the school. HealthSouth has certainly built a premier facility on its leased parcel. Accordingly, should you know of any medical, institutional or professional office seeking to build and lease who might favor this location, please refer them to Fr. Frank. These important leased land revenues will serve to strengthen the school’s endowment and other dedicated purposes.

Congratulations to BC Football Head Coach Danny Britt and the Cadet football team for finishing the regular season undefeated, as BC continues forward as the No.1 Boys’ Athletic Program in Southeast Georgia!

Forward, Always Forward Capital Campaign CAPITAL CAMPAIGN SURPASSES $7 MILLION The Forward, Always Forward Capital Campaign was publically announced in August of 2014 and has raised over $7 million dollars for Benedictine Military School. The following projects have taken place due to the generosity of our Benedictine families:

•Construction of Phase I of the new 19,000 square-foot Brown STEM Wing (2016)

•Georgia Power installed all new hi-voltage power lines throughout campus to support our new energy efficient infrastructure

•The athletic field was lit with energy efficient stadium lights (2015)

•BC leased seven acres of unused land to HealthSouth, which will generate revenue for our endowment to support student

financial aid (2015)

•B-Wing was completely renovated with modern classrooms and renamed Brent Hall in honor of Mr. & Mrs. John Brent ’59

Forward, Always Forward Capital Campaign PHASE I OF THE BROWN STEM WING WILL OPEN IN JANUARY 2017 On March 18, 2016, Benedictine Military School celebrated the groundbreaking for Phase I of the Brown STEM Wing, a state-ofthe-art 19,000-square-foot academic addition for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics named in honor of Mr. Edward J. Brown, Jr. ’33 and Mr. Edward J. Brown III ’66. BC has received more than $3.4 million in cash and signed pledges from donors specifically for this project within the Forward, Always Forward Capital Campaign.

The Brown STEM Wing is our top academic priority in the campaign. An acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, the STEM addition will provide much needed learning space as enrollment has grown over 21% in the last four years. It will also prepare our young men for careers in STEM related fields which are projected to increase by 17% by the year 2020 according to the New Bureau of Labor Statistics.

“Phase I of the Brown STEM Wing will soon be a reality, but we aren’t finished yet” says Greg Markiton ’92, Advancement Director at Benedictine. “We are actively fundraising for Phase II which will complete the four science laboratories and a lecture hall. It has been very exciting to see people respond to the challenge. They believe in the vision that has been set forth by our Headmaster and Board of Directors.”

Oct. 9, 2015, was a historic day at Benedictine Military School, as BC Headmaster Fr. Frank Ziemkiewicz, O.S.B., announced the second-largest gift in the history of the school; a nearly $1 million contribution to the Forward, Always Forward Capital Campaign made through the estate of Mr. John and Mrs. Marilyn Brent. B-wing, one of the academic wings of the school, has now been renamed Brent Hall in recognition of this most significant gift. “John and Marilyn were incredibly loyal supporters of the school,” Ziemkiewicz said. “John had an amazing engineering career in South Florida and served as one of the lead engineers on the F-16 Fighting Falcon used by the U.S. Air Force. Even though their home was in Florida, John and Marilyn’s bond with the BC Class of ‘59 was exceptionally strong. His classmates were like brothers to him and they always attended the class reunions during the St. Patrick’s Day festivities. Marilyn handcrafted sashes for each member of the class and they still wear them today. We are extremely grateful and humbled by their generosity and the fact that they chose to leave their legacy here at Benedictine.”

Forward, Always Forward Capital Campaign

Archabbot Douglas R. Nowicki, O.S.B. (middle), the 11th Archabbot of Saint Vincent Archabbey in Latrobe, Pa., visited Benedictine Military School in late May of 2016. He attended the dedication of St. Benedict Hall located in the entrance of BC’s Academic Building. The Abbey recently made a $500,000 gift to the Forward, Always Forward Capital Campaign and St. Benedict Hall is named in honor of the monks from Belmont Abbey and St. Vincent Archabbey who have dedicated their lives in service of Benedictine Military School. Their faithful leadership and stability has been the foundation of our school since 1902. BC Headmaster Fr. Frank Ziemkiewicz, O.S.B. (left), presented a plaque to Archabbot Nowicki in grateful appreciation of his 25 years of leadership and service to BC. Mr. William E. The Barlow Learning Center was dedicated Feb. 12, 2016, at Benedictine Military School. The center was made possible through the generosity of Mr. & Mrs. Jason Barlow (middle) through the Forward, Always Forward Capital Campaign. The purpose of the Barlow Learning Center is to provide our Cadets with the most comprehensive range of information and services which address the full scope of learning differences in a way that creates hope, possibility and partnership. The program is facilitated by a learning specialist who assists our students using a wide variety of tools such as iMacs, iPads and a variety of software packages. BC Principal Mr. Dennis A. After a lightning delay and double-overtime, Benedictine Military School defeated Greater Atlanta Christian, 47-44, in a season-opening thriller for the ages Aug. 21, 2015, at Savannah State University’s T.A. Wright Stadium. BC finished the 2015 football season with a 12-1 record after suffering a 54-28 loss to Fitzgerald High School in a GHSA Class AA quarterfinal.

Will Carter (right), BC Class of 2016, chose Benedictine Military School as the place where he wanted to sign his paperwork to be a delegate at the Republican National Convention on July 18-21 in Cleveland. Mrs. Lori Saunders notarized Will’s paperwork and WSAV interview him. Will was one of three district delegates who attended the Republican National Convention. “I went to the local county and district conventions to run as a delegate,” Carter said. “At the district convention, I was nominated from the floor against a chosen person from the Republican Party’s nominating committee for the district. I gave a speech and then went to a vote between me and the Grassroots Coordinator for Donald Trump, Jeanee Seaver. I won by over 10 votes. Because of this, I am one of the three delegates from this district attending the RNC and, furthermore, will vote on the republican nominee for president.”

Carter is a freshman at Mercer University.

2015-2016 Annual Giving - Scholarship Luncheon The 2016 Scholarship Luncheon was held at Benedictine Military School on May 3, 2016. Nearly 150 students, parents, donors, alumni and friends gathered together for this annual event to celebrate the families who enrich our Benedictine Military School environment. We are grateful for the commitment of the Benedictine families who have generously provided these most special scholarships.

They are truly making a difference by helping to make the BC experience possible for many Cadets. We are very proud to recognize 27 Cadets who are scholarship recipients, as they have done an outstanding job this year representing the Benedictine Military School community.

Pat Douglas, a certified public accountant and member of the BC Class of 1981, was honored at the luncheon for his leadership with the GOAL Scholarship Program. Through his firm, Pat has worked with his clients to help them redirect their Georgia tax dollars to help young men attend Benedictine.
