Johnny Manziel among finalists in 2012 Heisman race Chandler Smith The Battalion Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel, alongside Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein and Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o, was named one of three finalists Monday for the Heisman Memorial Trophy, an award granted to the most outstanding individual player in college football. Manziel concluded the season passing for 3,419 yards and 24 touchdowns, while rushing for 1,181 yards and 19
touchdowns, leading Texas A&M to its first 10-win season since 1998. He will look to become A&M’s second Heisman award winner since 1957 winner John David Crow under then-head coach Paul “Bear” Bryant. In a release from the Texas A&M athletic department, Manziel said he’s proud to represent A&M in the Heisman Award ceremony. “I’m overwhelmed by this tremendous honor of representing Texas A&M, the 12th Man and all my teammates in
New York,” Manziel said. “This is a dream come true for me and I know it’s a credit to all my coaches and teammates. I definitely wouldn’t be a Heisman finalist without my teammates and coaches.” Manziel’s 4,600 total yards smashes the SEC record for yardage in a season — previously held by 2010 Heisman winner Cam Newton — a feat the A&M signal caller achieved in two fewer games. His 576 total yards against Louisiana Tech was an SEC record for yardage

Not much in the modern realm of college football can be labeled as “outstanding” anymore. Outstanding implies quality beyond greatness. The term insinuates power and depth, molding itself from the very qualities that legends are made of. For decades, this word — outstanding — has stood as the lone qualification of the sport’s most prestigious individual award, the Heisman Memorial Trophy. The
cast of men who can, deservedly so, claim the recognition as their own are remembered and known as some of the most influential athletes to ever grace the sport. For any current player, adding their name to the vaunted ranks of the Heisman Trophy winners stands as the ultimate goal — a way to cement oneself as a college football legend. The award’s three finalists for the
2012 season were announced Monday evening, with Johnny Manziel leading the way, holding his own against the likes of Kansas State’s Collin Klein and Notre Dame’s Manti Te’o. After leading the Aggies to an unprecedented 10-2 season in the program’s inaugural year with the Southeastern Conference, Johnny

The Battalion Sex sells, but contraception does not always follow the same trend. Contraception, the deliberate prevention of conception or impregnation by the use of various techniques, is often expensive or considered embarrassing — sometimes resulting in the lack of people purchasing it. Several locations in College Station are working to make contraception an affordable and accessible product. Andrea Berrios, junior biology major, said she thinks it is fairly easy to acquire contraception, especially in College Station. “Condoms are free at Beutel,” Berrios said. “And you can go to the Women’s Center at Beutel and they can prescribe hormonal birth control for free. The generic [birth control] pill cost $7 a month without insurance.” The Health Education Center, located in room 159 of the A.P. Beutel Health Center, gives out two to three thousand condoms a semester, which are donated by the Texas Department of Health Services. Lauren Dorsett, health educator, said there was an even higher demand than what was being distributed. See Sexual Health on page 3

Michael Rodriguez: The impact of the Johnny Football Effect will resonate for years to come
I
n 2012, Texas A&M saw the revelation that was the beginning of the “Johnny Football phenomenon, or Johnny Manziel, as he prefers to go by his real name. Throughout the season, the redshirt freshman quarterback has dazzled the crowds in the stadiums and those tuned to their TVs to the point where he now stands as a Heisman Award finalist and potentially the first freshman to win the prestigious award. Manziel, in his first year as the signal caller for the Aggies, led A&M to a 10-2 record, a significant improvement from the 7-6 season a year ago. He also broke the SEC record for total yards in a season, surpassing previous holder and Heisman winner Cam Newton by 273 yards in two fewer games. Manziel also became the first freshman and fifth ever to account for 3,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards. What the statistics for his awardworthy performance will not tell you is that Johnny Football is growing, not only as a legacy but also as a brand. Manziel will bring both short term and long term impacts on the field and also financially. Before the move to the SEC from the Big 12 Conference Texas A&M generated $44.4 million, according to Forbes. The move to the SEC alone will increase that total significantly. Add in the effect of ticket sales for the people who want to witness “The Legend of Johnny Football, the man who dodges 11 defensive players, throws the
pigskin with pinpoint accuracy, and can run around, fumble the football and throw a touchdown all in the same play — rest assured that when the 2013 tickets go on sale, they will be gone in a matter of hours. If not, minutes. Johnny Football is not only going to generate revenue at the ticket office, but also in the bookstore and Aggie gear vendors everywhere. Have you caught a glimpse of the Johnny Football t-shirts? How about the No. 2 A&M football jersey? You can bet those puppies will be gone faster than Manziel appears to defenses. When the football team finds success on the field, alumni become more generous with their pocketbooks and the donations will be coming into the football program like never before. Long-term effects look even more lustrous than the short-term effects. With Manziel at the helm for at least two more seasons, the Aggies are in prime position to be a serious SEC and national title contender during his tenure. Manziel’s presence and the
team’s performance have led to a jump in recruiting talent as A&M ranks as the 11th best recruiting class in the nation, according to ESPN.com. A&M saw the leap of three four-star level recruits and 22 total commitments in 2011 to 11 four-star recruits and 32 total commitments for 2013. Finally, if Manziel can lead A&M into the semifinals in the new BCS playoff format beginning in 2014, the power of football supremacy would have completely shifted over to A&M instead of t.u. As Johnny Football prepares to take the stage under the bright lights of New York in hopes of capturing the Heisman Trophy, the effect Manziel had on A&M has been felt and will continue to be felt as the legend continues.
Legend
in single-game with 576 yards, breaking the mark initially against Arkansas before resetting it in the shootout victory over Louisiana Tech. When it comes down to the numbers, however, Manziel’s head coach, Kevin Sumlin, was able to say it best. “You can put those numbers up against anybody that’s not only played this year, [but] who’s ever played the game, Sumlin said. “For a single season, they speak for themselves. For the first time in years, however, a true Heisman front-runner has not revealed himself outright. Both Te’o, a linebacker from Notre Dame, and Klein, Kansas State’s quarterback sensation, have consistently found ways to remain in the conversation. With both standing as seniors and considering a freshman has never won the Heisman, Manziel’s youth continues to be a negative factor with multiple “traditional voters. The redshirt freshman’s age, however, hasn’t been the only fallout on his resume. With Klein steering the Wildcats to a Big 12 Championship and a berth in the Fiesta Bowl, and Te’o heading up the undefeated Fighting Irish en route to Miami for the national title game, both Manziel’s opponents have shown leadership and certain “intangibles notable in many Heisman winners. Despite both Klein and Te’o holding a strong gridiron presence, their statistics have failed to measure up to
their hype, especially when compared to Manziel. When matched up statistically headto-head with Klein, Johnny Football dominated in almost every category, compiling 1,220 more total yards and six more scores with only one additional interception. Te’o, on the other hand, only has his top-ranked defense to back him up. In almost every defensive statistic, he ranks substandard. All factors considered, Manziel has shown himself to be outstanding, particularly in the eyes of the Heisman voters. The young quarterback has even been able to secure some backing from the likes of a former opponent, star LSU defensive end Sam Montgomery. “Johnny Football is nothing to play with, Montgomery said following Alabama’s loss to A&M. “My hat’s off to Johnny Football. Heisman — just give it to him. Johnny Football will enter the Heisman ceremony in New York City on Saturday, as only a simple athlete from Kerrville, Texas, hoping to make history. He should emerge a new man — one we all should know as Johnny Heisman.
man Pundit, USA Today and the Scripps Howard Heisman poll. Olin Buchanan, a Heisman Trophy voter and writer for TexAgs.com, said while Manziel was projected to win the trophy, he could meet some resistance. “I do think that, going forward, all of the polls have Manziel winning it, Buchanan said. “Some have said that he’ll win by a really slim margin and other polls have him winning by a larger margin. I think he’ll win it but I think anytime there’s a Notre Dame player, you can speculate he’s going to win. But you can’t take it for granted because Notre Dame always gets so much attention. A win by any of the three candidates would make history. Klein would be the first Kansas State player to win the trophy while Te’o would be the first line-
backer to achieve the award. If Manziel wins, he will be the first freshman to win the award and the lowest classification to win since Tim Tebow in 2007. In an opening statement before a Manziel teleconference, A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin said his youthful gunslinger was an integral piece to A&M’s success in its inaugural SEC season. “As we’ve gone through this process, he’s been a catalyst for this football team in the first season in the SEC, Sumlin said. “[Manziel is] a tremendous competitor, a tremendous leader and something that you really don’t see in a player as a redshirt freshman. All his leadership on and off the field has made this season a real successful one.

Football has emerged as the vanguard candidate for the Heisman. Despite his youth, the young quarterback has proven his worth through a slew of broken records and a pile-up of “video game statistics. Following two tough, early season home losses to top-ranked squads Florida and LSU, Manziel was able to engineer the year’s most notable upset when he led the Aggies over unbeaten Alabama, 29-24. In four excruciatingly long quarters, under the hostile lights of Bryant-Denny Stadium, Johnny Football dominated the future conference champions in what may be, arguably, A&M’s most momentous victory to date. Statistically, the redshirt freshman finished the regular season with 4,600 yards of total offense through just 12 games, surpassing the SEC record set by Heisman winner and former Auburn quarterback Cam Newton who generated 4,327 yards through 14 games in his 2010 national title campaign. Manziel continued to add to his legacy as he secured 43 total touchdowns in the year with just eight interceptions. On the setting-records front, Johnny Football stands as the first freshman and only the fifth player in FBS history to throw for 3,000 yards and rush for another 1,000 in the same season. He also holds the SEC record for total offense

Social stigma? Worth the wait Alec Goetz: Sex-ed should teach safe habits, not abstinence only
U
rban Dictionary defines the “walk of shame” as “the walk across campus in the same clothes as yesterday after you slept with someone and spent the night in their dorm room.”
Thankfully, you won’t often hear the phrase “walk of shame” articulated verbally outside of a tv show parody of the “fratty party guy” archetype, but as a piece of language it speaks to a very simple fact about how sexuality is viewed in the eyes of mainstream American society: something to be ashamed of, something to keep hidden, but also something to be pointed out for crude laughs or advertising purposes. Ever stopped and thought about how odd it is that we live in a world where 50 Shades of Grey — a romance novel describing in graphic detail the exploratory sexual experimentations of a young woman — could become a record setting best-seller among women young and old, while at the same time debates raged in Congress about whether or not people should have easy and affordable access to contraception? It’s a result of the same mindset that forces CIA directors and US senators into early retirement, and it’s the reason why your mom went to go see Magic Mike. We live in a moment in history where the mainstream culture has embraced sexuality more than any other
in the last few centuries at least, yet when it comes to talking about and doing the act itself, it’s still viewed as taboo and dirty. Of course improving an entire society’s attitude toward a topic as loaded and touchy as sex is no small feat, but that change has to begin somewhere right? Why not start with the places where these attitudes first take hold, an environment of directed learning and social interaction. Why not start with our schools? Currently the state of Texas advocates a policy of abstinence-only sex education. Known as the Abstinence-Centered Education Program, this policy encourages “the implementation of evidence-based interventions, as defined by the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) that will delay initiation of sexual activity ... in youth ages fifteen (15) through nineteen (19)” in public schools grades 5-12. Here’s the part I left out of that quote: “... as part of a continuum of services to decrease the teen pregnancy rate and rate of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) ...” This is certainly a noble goal for the department of State Health Services,
Sexual health Continued from page 1
“They are just in a basket on the front desk when you walk in and anyone can walk in and take as many as they need,” Dorsett said. “I definitely think that if we had more, they would be used. But we put everything we have access to out.” Planned Parenthood, located on East 29th Street in Bryan, gives out condoms and birth
but the fact of the matter is that there’s no evidence that presenting abstinence as the only acceptable option and neglecting matters of contraception and the healthy practice of responsible sexual behavior has any effect on these statistics at all. If you need hard evidence and numbers then you need only look at the rates of teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease to see that this sort of thinking is not working out. We must look beyond “abstinenceonly programs” if we want to change the ways people think and talk about sexuality, which is the only way to allow our collective cultural attitudes about it to stop adversely affecting the health of our bodies, our minds and our relationships. Sex is an everyday thing. Chances are high that everyone you’ve ever met or will ever meet has or will have sex. It’s society’s responsibility to make sure that they and all the people of today and tomorrow know about the benefits and yes, the risks that come with living a healthy sex life and to make sure they are armed with the knowledge and the skills of how to go about it safely and responsibly. Choosing when to start getting experience in the field is up to them. Alec Goetz is a senior English major and lifestyles desk assistant for The Battalion.
Joe Terrell: Abstinence is more than the absence of sex
M
I view sex not merely as a component to relationship, but as a physical manifestation of love, a gracious gift given to couples that have dedicated their lives to one another. Sex is a physical act, but it’s also more than that. The synthesis of love, passion and security that results from sex achieves its full potential when it’s experienced through the institution of marriage. premarital sex, cohabiting At the end of the day, I before marriage or satisfying could have filled this column fleeting desires for tempowith all the familiar statistics rary satisfaction. about sexually transmitted I was at a comedy club one night and the comedian diseases, unwanted pregnancies and divorce rates among onstage quipped “people couples who choose to who choose not to abstain engage in premarital sex, but from sex before marriage I’m not naïve. y typical abstinence-only sexual education experience typically went like this: A (married) youth pastor would stand in front of a group of hormonally-charged teenagers and tell us “Sex is awesome. It’s the best thing ever. But it’s something you shouldn’t do until you’re married. Or God will be mad at you.” Or something. It’s like being given a present in January and told you can’t open it until the following Christmas. However, for beliefs both spiritual and personal, I have chosen to abstain from sex until the night of my wedding. College students have sex. Your friends have sex. You may be having sex. If you haven’t had sex, odds are you will at some point in your life. The only question is when you’ll be having sex – before marriage? Or are you going to wait until after the wedding band has been slipped onto your finger? Call me foolish or old-fashioned, but I still believe in the power of the traditional love story. In my opinion, our lives our composed of the grand narrative we find ourselves in and the storylines we choose to pursue. Every flirty text message, dinner date, side-hug-turned-realhug and kiss are all bits and pieces of the love stories we choose for ourselves. The love story I want to write for myself doesn’t involve
control, depending on each specific situation. “Here at our location, we sell condoms $2 by a dozen, which is relatively cheap,” said Sandra Gonzalez, external service coordinator of Planned Parenthood. “Every case is different, but we will give out free condoms to some people.” Berrios said there are several resources, but even taking free condoms sometimes has an embarrassing stigma attached. “I think what stops people from buying condoms or taking contraceptive is a combination of embarrassment and attitude on campus toward
birth control,” Berrios said. “For the first part, I think people are embarrassed because if you are seen with condoms or birth control people will automatically assume that you are having sex, and for whatever reason that is not something most people will want automatically assumed of them.” Purchasing contraception may be embarrassing to some or feel like an invasion of privacy, but can have a large impact on a person’s livelihood.

Johnny Manziel’s numbers compare to almost every offensive Heisman winner to ever win the trophy. Manziel, however, would be the ďŹ rst freshman to ever win the award, a fact some voters may hold against him. After crushing Cam Newton’s SEC record for total yardage in a season, possessing the most impressive win of the college football season in defending national champion Alabama, and possessing decisively superior statistics to every current candidate, Manziel is — and should be — the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy.

The Christmas Story: The Creator-God of the universe, Jesus Christ, left His home in heaven to become a human being. He lived a perfect life, performed miracles, was betrayed, and wrongfully condemned to death. After being crucified, Jesus' body was placed in a tomb. Three days later, he rose from the dead. After His resurrection, he remained on earth speaking to people for 40 days and then ascended to heaven. Jesus sacrificed himself to make a way for all people to have eternal life in heaven.

solo. Notched 5.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks.
◗ His seven interceptions are tied for third in the country and the most by a linebacker in 13 years. Recovered two fumbles.
◗ Clinched the Butkus and Nagurski awards. The Butkus honors the best linebacker in the country while the Nagurski honors the nation’s best defensive player.

Our take: Notre Dame’s Manti Te’o is an impressive defensive player and one of the best in college football, as shown by his possession of the prestigious Butkus and Nagurski awards. That said, one could argue Te’o isn’t even the best defensive player in the country, much less the best player in the country. Notre Dame’s undefeated record and national appeal are the largest boosts to Te’o’s Heisman campaign. He will present A&M’s Johnny Manziel the most restistance of the two candidates attempting to usurp the freshman quarterback.
Kansas State QB Collin Klein Klein info ◗ Passed for 2,490 yads and 15 touchdowns to seven interceptions while rushing for 890 yards and 22 touchdowns.
◗ His 22 rushing touchdowns tie for second nationally and ranks first among quarterbacks.

Kansas State’s Collin Klein was once the favorite to win the trophy but fell from the top slot after his most notable blemish of the season, a 52-24 loss to Baylor in which he threw three interceptions. Klein’s statistics are impressive for any quarterback but don’t touch Manziel’s numbers by any stretch of the imagination. Leading Kansas State to a BCS bowl berth and a one-loss season is impressive, but will likely not be enough for him to overcome a disappointing performance against one of the worst defenses in major college football.

But the fact is, gynecological check-ups are just as important, if not more, than annual teeth cleanings, eye exams or mole-checks. OBGYN appointments serve to examine the sexual organs for complications like sexually transmitted infections, cysts, tumors, HPV and cervical cancer cells. Basically, these appointments can save lives. When I found out that the majority of my friends,

probably greater outside of it. The first step is finding a gynecologist. Most of the time, the gynecologist will depend on your insurance plan, but if possible, take suggestions from friends or family members. If you have limited or no insurance, the on-campus Women’s Clinic, Planned Parenthood or any other community health clinics are all great options. The gynecologist will give you specific instructions on vaginal care for the 48 hours

enlarged ovaries, cysts and tumors. Finally, the gynecologist may perform a recto-vaginal exam to check for tumors behind the uterus. He or she may also perform a breast exam. The good news is, the entire exam will only take about three to four minutes — roughly the time it took to read this column. Gynecological check ups are important and every woman, sexually active or not, should have one. A check-up is a responsible, preventative measure and you owe it to yourself to keep your lady-bits happy and healthy.

A speculum is a tool that holds the walls of the vagina apart so the doctor is able to swab for cervical cells and discharge, which will later be tested for cancer and sexually transmitted infections. Discomfort is normal during this part of the exam, but it shouldn’t be painful. If it is, tell the doctor immediately so that adjustments can be made. Next, the doctor will examine the uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries by inserting one or two gloved fingers into the vagina while pressing on the lower abdomen. This part of the exam can determine the state of your fertility and what birth control choices will best suit you. It is also meant to check for infections,

Also, be careful not to schedule the appointment during your period; you’ll likely be sent home. I suggest bringing a friend or family member to help ease the nerves. Having moral support for such a “big-girl” event is invaluable, so if you can find someone you trust, I highly recommend it. A nurse can also be requested to stay present during the exam. After removing all clothes, you will be instructed to sit on the end of the examination table, lie back and rest your heels in the stirrups. him and loved his parents, his friends and his lord Jesus Christ,” said Ben Riggle, freshman engineering technology major. “For me, Garrett will always be remembered as my oldest friend and as someone I could ask anything of and entrust him with anything.” Garrett was also passionate about baseball. His love for the game helped him become a standout player in high school and carried him to one year of play at the College of Charleston before transferring to A&M. He also sang in his school’s choir and acted in theatrical performances. Garrett transferred to A&M in the fall of 2012 to major in business administra-
tion. He was accepted into the Business Honors program and awarded the Beatty Business Scholarship. “Garrett crossed boundaries,” Joe said. “Not only did Garrett play baseball at an extremely high level, but he also sang in the high school choir and was in the Mays Business Honors program.” Throughout the summer, Garrett worked for two months as a counselor and baseball coach at K2 summer camp, a part of Kanakuk Kamps in Lampe, Mo. “Garrett loved and poured into his campers and he bonded and shared life with his coworkers,” said David Sargent, sophomore electrical engineering major who worked with Garrett at Kanakuk Kamps. “During the short time I knew him, I could see the love of God
overflow into his love for others. He had a huge heart and was always smiling.” Garrett influenced many people in his life and continues to do so after his death. “As tragic as Garrett’s death is, his passing has impacted a lot of people,” Joe said. “We’ve heard from students not only from A&M, but from Baylor, Texas, Georgia and the College of Charleston — students Garrett had never met but were affected by his death. Garrett was a great kid, but he made a mistake and we just want to remind these students to make smart decisions.” Garrett will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, spirit and for his constant smile, which he greeted everyone with. He is survived by his mother, Janell, and his father, Joe.
