#RacismAtTAMUFeelsLike Current, former students participate in hashtag about perceived racism on campus, campus monument vandalized

undreds of testimonies of perceived acts of racism were tweeted with the hashtag #RacismAtTAMUFeelsLike, as were opposing and dissenting arguments against the comments Sunday night and continuing into Monday. The Texas A&M chapter of the

NAACP tweeted out a request for students to tweet personal thoughts and accounts of racism they have experienced or heard about on campus. Stories began coming in soon after the hashtag was created. Bryce Randall, president of TAMU NAACP and political science junior said the hashtag was meant to promote NAACP Week and upcoming events, and that he didn’t anticipate the amount of

tweets and conversation that followed. “We weren’t expecting such a huge response, but we’re glad we got one,” Randall said. “People aren’t just making these things up, these are actually things that are happening on a daily basis. It lets you know that this is a problem that does need to be addressed. This conversation is the first step to remediating these issues.”

Along with comments and tweets supporting the hashtag, many students were denying the hashtag or criticizing the stories being told. Opposing comments included accounts of being discriminated against for being white and Republican. “I think comments like that can be problematic. Not because they’re coming from a place saying, ‘I feel discrimination too,’ but from a place that wants to combat or come

into opposition,” Randall said. “It doesn’t move us forward. I feel like the huge thing we need here is empathy.” Daniel Pugh, vice president of student affairs, said he is proud TAMU NAACP initiated the conversation. ‘Smash Bros’ bond in MSC basement tournaments

Liberation of city could be pivotal in fight against ISIS By Katy Stapp @katyxstapp A long-awaited offensive to retake and liberate the ISIS-occupied city of Mosul began Monday by Iraqi and Kurdish forces and could be the beginning of the end of ISIS. Mosul, which was seized by ISIS in June 2014, is the last remaining stronghold of the terrorist group and a vital part of its self-declared caliphate, or Islamic State, that spans the borders of Iraq and Syria. When it was seized more than 2 million people resided in Mosul. After two years, only about 1 million residents remain in the city. The offensive, which was announced in a televised statement Monday by Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, aims to retake Mosul and free its remaining citizens from tyranny. Much of the United States’ military presence in Iraq in the last two years has been focused on training Iraq’s security forces for the campaign. The battle could last weeks or months, but if successful, the Mosul liberation would be pivotal in the fight against ISIS. One day into the attack, Iraqi forces cleared nine villages and extended control over a key road. “One of the biggest things is the fact that this is the largest populated area controlled by Islamic State, so taking that back is a big deal and a very important objective,” said Danny Davis, senior lecturer at the Bush School who specializes in counterterrorism. “I think the other part of it is the Peshmerga is fighting with the Iraqi forces, which is another big deal — the fact that those two are working together.”

revor Knight’s redshirt senior season has come with mixed results. He has proven that he possesses a unique blend of gritty leadership and a productive rushing ability that has repeatedly been enough to win games, but he has not shown that he can complete much more than half his passes. When A&M heads to Tusca-

loosa to square off against No. 1 Alabama Saturday, Knight has a prime opportunity to show the country what he is made of. Alabama’s secondary has shown plenty of vulnerability to this point in the season, but it is unknown yet whether or not Knight will be able to exploit that weakness. Knight has had a ton of success on the ground so far in 2016, particularly zone-read plays with freshman running back Trayveon Williams. Nick Saban defenses always have a dominant front seven, and this year is no different. If Knight is not efficient in the passing game from the onset against the Tide, I don’t expect there to be a ton of running room

for Knight or Williams, and that would put the Aggie offense in a difficult situation. However, if Knight can complete some passes early in the game and soften up the Alabama defense, that will likely open up some lanes for him and Williams to run through and the Aggies will have a shot to pull the upset. The Crimson Tide is certainly a great team, but I don’t see in them the same type of overpowering defense that they’ve been in the past. This is why Knight’s performance is so crucial and him having success through the air would do wonders for A&M’s chances of keeping its season unblemished.

Or, at least, the electronic version of one as students with controllers battle it out while clustered around some TV screens in the basement. Many of these students are members of College Station Smash Bros, a group dedicated to creating a lively and inviting community for the popular “Super Smash Brothers” series of video games. In addition to competing in various competitions all across the state of Texas, the group also hosts a wide variety of “Super Smash Brothers” tournaments in the MSC, the majority of which are free and open to the public. Meteorology senior Ryan Everitt, who is a longtime member of College Station Smash Bros and admin of the group’s Facebook page, said “Super Smash Brothers” is set apart from other eSports — or competitions that take place through the SMASH BROS ON PG. 2

SMASH BROS CONTINUED use of electronic systems — by the inherent social aspect of competitive play. “When people hear eSports, they think, ‘Oh, you just sit in your room; you play on your computer all day,’” Everitt said. “That’s the exact opposite of ‘Smash Brothers,’ especially for some of the older titles like ‘Melee,’ we have to play on these old, clunky TVs called CRTs. Because of the lag there’s no online, so you actually have to go to someone’s house or place or meet here to play. That’s the only way you can play someone is going up to them person-to-person.” Everitt said the MSC serves as an excellent location to host these kinds of events. “It’s a centralized location for all of us to drive to. It’s not an awkward location. We don’t have to depend on people’s apartments, so that’s really convenient and on top of that, everyone knows where the MSC is located,” Everitt said. Leadership studies sophomore and tournament organizer Lauren Salinas said in addition to the overall convenience of the location, playing in the MSC provides another key benefit. “I think it’s a great place to play because we’re right here where the bustle of the student community is,” Salinas said. “I think people will get really interested when they see a huge throng of people in the same spot, paying attention to one specific game.” Everitt said this kind of exposure has been key to building a strong “Smash” community at Texas A&M. “I can’t tell you how many times I got to introduce myself to newcomers,” Everitt said. “They would come down and I would introduce myself, tell them about our scene and they would join and become regular competitors throughout the

State of Texas, so it’s really cool.” Everitt said the community has been steadily growing over the past few years. “When I first joined it was the same twenty to thirty people that came out regularly that you knew,” Everitt said. “Now it’s just so many. I can probably say we’ve had a total amount of 300 unique people already this semester come out to the tournaments, which is huge. It’s awesome.” Everitt said much of this growth is due to the release of the newest addition to the “Super Smash Bros” series, “Super Smash Bros 4” for the Wii U. “When ‘Smash 4’ came out, it was a huge thing for us, for our scene, because not only was it a new game for everyone to learn and try and compete with, but it brought in so many new people that were not really familiar with our scene, but they came to know our scene because of ‘Smash 4,’” Everitt said. This inclusive atmosphere extends beyond just the variety of games being played. Biology junior and tournament organizer Tony Villarreal said in many ways the ‘Smash’ community at A&M tries to be as accessible as possible to those who may be interested in competing. “I’m good friends with the founder of the College Station ‘Smash’ scene, Garreth Casper, and he made this scene for people just to take a break from their studies, just come and relax, hang out, play some games,” Villarreal said. Villarreal said while the scene is competitive, it is important to maintain a friendly environment. “We just have fun,” Villarreal said. “We do have fun being very competitive and having tournaments on a weekly basis, but we never take it above and beyond where there’s people having grudges against each other and people badmouthing each other. We try not to get that far, but we’re still very competitive and we have a lot of fun.”

n order to contain the Alabama offense, A&M’s safeties must continue to play at a superb level. While the Crimson Tide relies heavily on its run game, Jalen Hurts and his receiving targets are efficient when going airborne. Armani Watts, Justin Evans and Donovan Wilson are going to have their hands full with the Tide’s trio of Calvin Ridley, ArDarius Stewart and O.J. Howard. This may be the best receiving corps the Aggie secondary will face to date, but the talent level should not be a shell shock since they face top-notch receivers in practice. As seen in highlight clips, Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin has been spotted multiple times

throwing his hands up to signal a touchdown while watching a long passing play develop. The A&M safeties cannot allow big plays such as those to happen, especially on play-action. Although Hurts is a true freshman, he has played with outstanding composure thus far and has thrown only two interceptions. With Myles Garrett and Daeshon Hall bound to put pressure on Hurts, it is key that the safeties play tight coverage, stay sharp in their assignments and be ball hawks to force Hurts to make some due rookie mistakes. On the flip side, the safeties must act as doorstops to counter the Alabama run offense and not allow any back to slip past them if they break through in open field. Alabama’s offense has 39 plays of 20-plus yards on the season. If the Aggies want a win, the safeties have to buckle-up and play lights out up top all night long.

College Game Day top-10 matchup led A&M to a 2OT victory in College Station almost two weeks ago. The Aggies took a long nap and suddenly find themselves in the same situation. This Saturday presents the Aggies with an opportunity to not only improve their football program, but finally prove themselves as a championship team. I don’t want to jump on the hype train just yet because as exciting as it is to be 6-0, the Aggies were 5-0 the two previous seasons before finishing 8-5 in both cases. How can you be 6-0, 4-0 SEC and not be a champi-

onship team, you ask? Consistency. We’ve seen A&M here before — SEC, top-10, practically on top of the world. The Aggies just have not been level-headed in their last few seasons. Sure they can be great, but we can all admit we’ve seen some sides of A&M that we’d rather leave out of the highlight reel. Going up against an Alabama team that is so exceptional — consistently — it’s going to take a different level of A&M football to bring down the Crimson Tide. The Aggies won’t last playing like they have in any game of 2016. I’m not saying it won’t happen — or that it will — I’m saying playing a perfect game, overcoming adversity and taking down Alabama will finally prove Texas A&M as Championship contenders. It will also set the bar down the road as it’ll be Aggie football we haven’t seen since the Heisman himself.

ov. 11, 2012 is the day David took down Goliath in that Johnny Manziel led the Aggies into Tuscaloosa and defeated the Alabama Crimson Tide, 29-24. Since joining the SEC in 2012, the Aggies have gone 1-3 against Alabama, suffering three losses on the road and one at home. For the first time since joining the SEC and since No. 6 A&M is off to its best start in 22 years, the Aggies are set to play the No.1 Crimson Tide without a loss. That makes Saturday’s matchup that much bigger and one of the most important games in A&M head

coach Kevin Sumlin’s tenure. Sumlin and the Aggies have the chance to break out of the 8-4 slump that has plagued the team in past seasons. With a win a Saturday, a lot of the past can be put by the wayside and will launch A&M into the College Football Playoff conversation. On the flip side, Alabama can prove they are still the team to beat in college football and are a forced to be reckoned with. A win on Saturday would put the Tide and Nick Saban another step closer to continuing the college football dynasty firmly established in Tuscaloosa — 09’, 11’ 12’ and last season over Clemson. The winner of this game will have the chance to reign supreme in the SEC West and across the nation whether it be David or Goliath — Saturday couldn’t get here any faster.

The statue has been cleaned but will be cleaned deeper to remove all damage. “It’s unfortunate that any building would be graffitied, or statue,” Pugh said. “An individual would have reserved a space and held a sign up saying the exact same thing. It would’ve been well within their free speech rights to do so. But someone defaced a university statue. So now we have a different situation.” Alaya Keane, wildlife and conservation sophomore, participated in the #RacismAtTAMUFeelsLike conversation on Twitter. Keane said the vandalism happening in proximity to the hashtag could be detrimental to the ultimate goal. “I don’t think it should have been taken that far. I know there’s a lot of people at this university, like minorities and people of color who don’t like having the tradition of Sully,” Keane said. “I’m pretty sure it’s going to be backlash for us participating … This was really a way to get people to not be afraid. It’s not about hating the school. It’s about keeping them accountable for their actions.” The president’s office did not respond to a request to comment.

It certainly impacts me professionally speaking as well.” Following the social media activity prompted by the hashtag, vandalism of the Lawrence Sullivan Ross statue in Academic Plaza was reported to the University Police Department Monday morning. The words “Racist KKK gen Fuck Sully” were written in marker on the base of the statue. At time of press, no one has been found responsible for the incident, nor is there a clear link between the hashtag and the vandalism. The campus group TAMU Anti-Racism said it would release a written statement about this week’s events Thursday. Lieutenant Alan Baron with UPD said the individual found responsible for the vandalism could serve up to two years in jail with a fine not to exceed $10,000. “A report has been taken and the incident is currently under investigation,” Baron said. “Because the statue is a public monument and the makings were made with an indeli-
