exas A&M University is one step closer to having a clear answer on where guns will be restricted when Campus Carry goes into effect in August. The A&M University System announced proposed gun-free zones Tuesday. The gun-free regions were established by each Texas A&M System university and agency CEO, and do not include classrooms and resi-

dential areas. Proposed areas include collegiate sports events, healthcare facilities, the Becky Gates Child Care Facility and any sites where administrative hearings or investigations are occurring. Under the proposed plan, certain high-hazard research labs will be gun-free zones at the discretion of the university president. As the CEO of A&M’s flagship campus, President Michael Young put forth the proposed areas for the

College Station campus. In a university news release, Young said he considered proposals put forward by the Campus Carry Policy Task Force in making the decision. Young said he endorsed all 14 of the task force’s proposals and tacked on an additional recommendation that certain private offices be gun-free zones. “I am immensely grateful to the 22-member Campus Carry Policy Task Force and its chair, Assistant Vice President for Safety and

Their agreements started and stopped with a desire for peace — most other points were left in contention, however, as two officials on both sides of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict hotly debated the topic at a Wednesday lecture. Former Prime Minister of Israel Ehud Barak and Palestinian Legislative Council Executive Hanan Ashrawi spoke about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that has been ongoing for decades at an MSC Wiley Lecture, titled “In Pursuit of Peace.” Both representatives gave their remarks, proposed solutions and perspectives on the topic and then afterwards answered questions provided by moderator Janine Zacharia, a renowned journalist and guest lecturer from Stanford University. In his opening remarks, Barak covered his perspective on the history between Israel and Palestine. Barak said that now is the time to look for peace. “We should remain optimists … I’m confident that deep in the minds of the public, there is deep understanding that there is no other way,” Barak said. “We have to find a way to move forward … They are our neighbors. We have to find a way to live with them.” Although Ashwari agreed with Barak that peace was a goal to be reached by both sides, Ashwari said Israel is not a neighbor to Palestine, but rather an occupier of its land. “We did not wake up one day and decide that we wanted to fight them,” Ashwari said. “Israel was created on Palestine … There is no such thing as managing the conflict, and of course you cannot submit Palestine into submission.”

TEDx TAMU will bring students and thought provoking ideas together Saturday for A&M’s annual TEDx talk. TED — technology, entertainment and design — talks focus on connecting their audiences to “ideas worth spreading.” The 2016 TEDx TAMU theme of “pioneering change” will be explored in two separate sessions. “[There is a] pretty wide variety of talks this year that are covering a lot of different topics, but all are under the theme ‘Pioneering Change’ in whatever field the speaker

to grieving UT family By Chevall Pryce

Residents at Walton Hall hosted a letter-writing campaign Wednesday to offer condolences and support to the family of a University of Texas freshman who was murdered in last week. Haruka Weiser, a dance and theater freshman at the University of Texas, was found dead April 5 in a creek near UT’s football stadium. Upon investigation, police discovered Weiser was murdered on her way home. While a suspect in the murder has been charged, UT students are still mourning her death. A memorial service was held where her body was found and the university established a memorial fund in Weiser’s name. The Walton Hall Council supplied construction paper, markers and pictures of A&M and UT mascots Reveille and Bevo for students to WALTON WEDNESDAY ON PG. 2
