The Battalion he largest one-day student-run service project in the nation is back — and it’s bigger than ever. The Big Event expects to send more than 19,000 students to 1,900 job sites around Bryan-College Station on Saturday. “The Big Event unites A&M to connect the students to the community while practicing selfless service,� said Justin Cardenas , event director and senior biomedical sciences major. “This day embodies the Aggie spirit and shows what being an Aggie is all about. It unifies students, the community and gives an opportunity for students to serve.� This year’s event will begin with a speech from A&M head football coach Kevin Sumlin. Leann Keach, junior communication major and a programs executive, said the staff wanted to have a speaker that could connect to the University and one that students would recognize instantly. The speech will be followed by a performance by Green River Ordinance, an American rock band from Fort Worth. “Green River Ordinance is one of The Big Event’s ways of saying thank you for coming out March 23 to serve the community,� Keach said. “We were looking for a band that can energize the students in the morning.� Organizers of The Big Event said they are attempting to leverage the power of social media to reach out to as many people as possible and boost the event’s visibility. “We are planning on having a live Twitter feed going all day, and we are partnering with Texas A&M University for this,� said Ashley McNew, outreach executive for the event and junior communication major. Organizers have made it possible to bring all Instagram and Twitter photos from the event to one place. “Students can post pictures on Instagram or Twitter and hashtag ‘BigEvent’ and their photos could be featured by [A&M],� McNew said. The Big Event has grown in both popularity and participation since it began 31 years ago. This year’s projected student attendance breaks the event record. “We are excited to serve more residents and make this Big Event the biggest and best yet,� Cardenas said. “Our team has been hard at work with around 220 staff assistants, 40 committee membersa and 10 executive staff leaders. They have excelled this year to make this Big Event such a great day.�

Senate bill discriminates, GLBT Aggies say Aimee Breaux
The Battalion LBT Aggies vice president Maria Miguel said a Student Senate bill that would potentially threaten GLBT Resource Center funding is a form of discrimination. The GLBT Funding Opt-Out Bill, introduced at the Wednesday Student Senate meeting, would recommend students who do not approve of the GLBT Resource Center on religious or moral grounds be able to opt out of a portion of student fees that goes toward the resource center. Miguel, senior women’s and gender studies major, said the bill is no more than an ongoing and poorly veiled form of discrimination. “It’s a good way of masking prejudice and discrimination against the [GLBT] commu-

nity,� Miguel said. “It’s making the people who are very against the [GLBT] community sound really nice by using religion as a cover-up.� Northside senator Chris Woolsey, author of the bill, said the bill does not oppress the GLBT community. “The belief that this bill is oppressing the GLBT community or is a way to legalize discrimination is a ploy to distract from the real meaning of the bill, which is to protect the religious liberties of students,� Woolsey said. Woolsey said in his Wednesday presentation that the issue is more a matter of religious principle than a financial issue. Woolsey estimated $100,000 is allocated to the resource center, or about $2 per student. “I would argue that even if it took 43 cents off my tuition

Cepheid Variable, a sci-fi and fantasy student origination at A&M, will present AggieCon 44, a three-day event featuring guest speakers, costumes and more. AggieCon, the annual Cepheid Variable tradition for the last four decades, allows students to discuss creative works and connect over mutual interests in scifi, fantasy or horror. This year’s guest of honor is George R.R. Martin, author of the book series “A Song of Ice and Fire,� which was adapted into the HBO series “Game of Thrones.� This is the second time Martin has been a guest at AggieCon, having attended AggieCon 17. “It is really exciting to have [Martin] coming,� said Andrew Metscher, Blinn accounting major and programming coordinator for AggieCon. “It is always exciting to have a returning guest, especially someone who is relevant in current culture. SBP-elect calls for cabinet members Aimee Breaux
The Battalion ith the release of applications for the 14 positions in the new executive cabinet, Reid Joseph, student body president-elect, said he is looking for experienced students who exhibit the core values of A&M to help lead the Student Government Association. “Those filling these positions will be called to a higher standard,” Joseph said. “We want to see their motives behind wanting particular positions, because we want a group that has a burning desire to serve Texas A&M and serve students.” Joseph said the application process for the cabinet may open doors to more people and have a wider influence on the overall staffing of SGA than just filling cabinet positions. “Obviously, every applicant won’t get the position, ultimately,” Joseph said. “However, we do feel that every applicant will have the opportunity to serve in some capacity at SGA, because these vice presidents need teammates. We hope that even if [applicants] don’t get a vice presidency, they will continue to want to serve SGA.” Current executive vice president Mark Womack said the trend of awarding cabinet positions to individuals regardless of their spring campaign endorsement will likely continue, referencing Student Body President John Claybrook’s cabinet, which is not overwhelmingly made up of previous Claybrook campaigners. “Inevitably, you get people from campaigns that apply because they respect the SBP and have their best interest, but it is a pretty small number every year,” Womack said.

Joseph said while some positions lend themselves to applicants with specific experience, individuals with diverse backgrounds could be the best people for such a job. “We are looking for a lot of different things,” Joseph said. “We want to look for experience, not necessarily within the SGA — although that will be looked at — but experience that can directly pertain to what they are doing.” In line with Joseph’s campaign promises, two new positions have been added for a vice president of veteran affairs and a vice president of community outreach. These positions, along with the 12 preexisting positions, require the same weekly Governance Council meetings and Executive cabinet meetings in addition to job-specific requirements. To narrow down applicants, Joseph said he would seek outside advice in employing a process similar to that of Claybrook. Based off of written application responses, a number of applicants will be awarded an interview with Joseph, the SBP advisor Amy Loyd and an outside student leader. According to current cabinet members, the job goes well beyond the selection process. Election commissioner Allison Krenzien said, after having observed two election commissioners and having served on the election commission as a compliance officer and director, she felt well prepared going into the job this year. Still, she said unexpected difficulties inevitably come up. “You always think that you are going to be prepared when you’ve seen other people do things, but you’re never

Krenzien said new members need to be aware of the surprisingly short time constraint of a year. Vice president of legislative affairs Steven Traeger said, though the job is fulfilling, applicants should heed the warning that it requires long and sometimes unexpected hours. Traeger said, because of the travel required for his work with the Texas legislature through the SGA, he has had to limit his class schedule to six hours. “It is a serious responsibility, and I think that anyone applying needs to consider the gravity of the situation,” Traeger said. “Holding a position on the Executive Cabinet is different than being in SGA at any other school because the SGA at A&M does a lot, and with A&M being such a big school, it’s almost like a job.”

Consistency is underrated James Sullivan: Appreciate basketball’s success now — it may not last forever
C
ollege athletics are cyclical. Programs rise and fall; coaches and players come and go. Success — no matter how permanent it may seem — has an inevitable expiration date.
Over the past seven years, head coach Gary Blair and the Texas A&M women’s basketball program have opposed the national trend, scoring a fourth-seed or higher in the NCAA tournament each year — one of only four schools to do so. Even when faced with conference realignment to a league loaded with women’s basketball talent, the Aggies adapted. Under Blair’s direction, A&M surged in the Southeastern Conference tournament, defeating Kentucky for the University’s first SEC title. A decade ago, the women’s basketball program occupied the Big 12 Conference’s cellar without a winning record for seven years. Enter Blair, who immediately revamped the program, boosting attendance by 71 percent and — just one year into his tenure — snared the Aggies their first postseason berth since 1996. Since his arrival, A&M has seen its football program falter under former head coaches Dennis Franchione and Mike Sherman, as well as seen the rise
and — more recent — fall of the men’s basketball program. The women’s consistency on the hardwood, though, has been undeniable. Aggie fans have seen women’s basketball succeed in the postseason, particularly over the past few seasons. In a postseason run that captivated the A&M fan base, Blair and the 2011 squad won the NCAA tournament and the program’s first national title. However, Aggies have begun to take Blair’s consistency for granted. Attendance has decreased, and even though the NCAA tournament first and second rounds are being hosted in College Station Saturday and Monday, buzz about the women’s No. 3 seed is low. Before the arrival of A&M head football coach Kevin Sumlin and Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Johnny Manziel, Aggies dreamed of a return to the days of former head coach R. C. Slocum and the Wrecking Crew, where Big 12 championships were within reach. Since the departure of former men’s

Under current head coach Billy Kennedy, the Aggies have failed to reach the National Invitational Tournament, a far cry from the NCAA invitations A&M fans took for granted under the direction of Gillispie and Turgeon. Aggies should not allow Blair and his program’s consistent success to fall by the wayside. Lessons should be taken from football and men’s basketball. College athletics is cyclical, and enjoying the success of Blair and his women’s basketball program now should be a priority among the A&M fan base because, like most things, it has an expiration date. The Aggies, who claimed a No. 3 seed in the Norfolk Regional of the NCAA tournament, will host the first and second rounds Saturday through Monday at Reed Arena. The No. 14 seeded Wichita State makes its first NCAA tournament appearance after a 24-9 regular season and Missouri Valley Conference tournament title. “Wichita, [Kan.], is a basketball town, they know their basketball,” said A&M head coach Gary Blair. “We have a lot of respect for Wichita State.” The Aggies will face off against Wichita State for the third time in program history, with A&M owning a 2-0 advantage. A&M surged in the league tournament after losing four of its final five games en route to a fourth place regular season finish in its inaugural season with the Southeastern Conference. No. 9 Tennessee and No. 7 Kentucky on consecutive days to win the SEC tournament title. “The naysayers kept saying ‘they’re finished, they’re finished, just wait until next year,’” Blair said. “We’re never finished as Aggies. If you give us a chance to play, we’ll get it done.” The winner of No. 6 Nebraska and No. 11 Chattanooga will play the A&M-Wichita State victor Monday. “We’re excited to be in an NCAA tournament game,” said junior center Kelsey Bone. “There are a lot of things that we’ve been through this season — good, bad, ugly — but we’re always able to say that we come from the home of the 12th Man.”
