The Texas A&M football team will honor the memory of the victims of the Fort Hood tragedy by wearing Fort Hood logos on the back of their helmets for the rest of the season. “The tragedy occurred [Nov. 5],� said Jeffrey Watson, athletic equipment manager, “and we were discussing ways to somehow honor the victims that same night.�

The logo is an adaptation of an already existing logo that Fort Hood used for the Phantom Distro, an internal emailing service used to give daily updates to its subscribers.

In addition to that logo, the symbols of different outďŹ ts at Fort Hood were added. “Some of our staff and even a couple of players on the team are from that area,â€?

Watson said. “We just want them to know that they are in our thoughts and we fully support them.�

More than 250 enlisted soldiers and civilians from Fort Hood have been invited to the upcoming Baylor game where they will be recognized during the singing of the National Anthem. Fort Hood Garrison Com. Col. Bill Hill will give a message of thanks, which will be displayed on the big screen before the game. “In the end, we are not just recognizing them because they are servicemen but also because they’re Texans,�

NCAA Championship comes to Aggieland

Wolf Pen Creek Park lets the dogs out The Impact Animal Foundation will have a “Just Fur Fun” 5K Run at 8:30 a.m. Nov. 21 at Wolf Pen Creek Park.

Prizes will be awarded according to gender and age.

The 9:30 a.m. race is non-competitive and participants may race with their dogs. At 9:45 a.m., participants can attend a milelong stroll through the park with or without their pet to support animal rescue in the Brazos Valley. “There are so many pets in shelters that need good homes,” said first-year veterinary student Alissa Young.

“The shelters need help in the form of money and volunteers to provide the best care for these animals until they are adopted by a loving family.”

Registration forms are available online at www.impactanimals. org with a $15 fee per person. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Impact Animal Foundation. Nonregistered attendees are invited to take part in the other activities offered between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. These activities include games, moon bounces and human and canine eating competitions.

Throughout the afternoon there will be agility demonstrations and half-price adoptions.

“Foundations such as this one help the community by keeping animals off the streets and providing them with a chance to be adopted,” Young said.

Travis Lawson The Battalion The NCAA Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field Finals will be coming to Aggieland for the second time in three years.

The championships will be at the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium at the McFerrin Athletic Center. The facility features a running surface that is said to be one of the best in the world.

“It has a hydraulic banked track and it has the newest surface, the same surface used in Beijing for the Olympics,” said Texas A&M University athletic director Bill Byrne. “It is a very fast track and athletes like to come in and run on it.”

The Athletic Department is working on a bid for the 2013 Indoor Track and Field Championship. Bids must be submitted

two years in advance in order to receive a national championship. The University of Arkansas will have this year’s finals and Boise State University will have the 2012 finals.

There are a number of requirements to hold a national championship, including a large facility, significant manpower and a community with enough hotel rooms to support visiting fans.

Traffic also becomes a problem when holding such a large event. Associate athletic director Mike Caruso said it would take teamwork between the University, College Station and Bryan to work logistics out.

Although the task is large, Caruso said having the 2009 NCAA Track and Field Finals has given the department a head start.

“We already have a plan in place that will follow as we did to get ready for the 2009 finals,” Caruso said. “We probably had monthly conference calls to the NCAA and the Track Committee.”

Freshmen get grilled on the art of the grill First year students have opportunity to take part in Texas Barbecue seminar

Joaquin Villegas The Battalion A late-afternoon class on Fridays would not be considered very popular, especially among freshman students. However, students in the first year seminar of Texas Barbecue rarely miss a lecture because they get to cook for a grade.

The Texas Barbecue seminar offers students the opportunity to learn about cooking methods, seasoning styles and

the various cultures behind the dishes.

The first year seminar is intended for entering freshmen to help them ease into college life.

“The seminars are designed to get students in a small-classroom environment,” said Ray Riley, instructor and Rosenthal Meat Science and Technology Center manager. “It helps alleviate the impact of big classrooms and helps the students feel more comfortable.”

“It allows us to be more than teachers,” Riley said. “We can serve as advisers for the students throughout the semester.”

The students sit for a halfhour lecture on how to safely and correctly prepare the food and then have the rest of class to practice preparing the dish, and they even get to taste the food to see which recipes work best.

Sometimes the meats have to be prepared earlier in the day so students can taste the food

in the short time allotted for the class.

“We usually start cooking before class even starts,” said Will Wiederhold, graduate student and teaching assistant, “but students usually come before class start to help prepare the food and cook it.”

The students said they look forward to this class and not just because of the free food.

To pink out The Tap David Harris The Battalion With “Pink Out Kyle Field” being the theme for this week’s football game against Baylor, it would only seem fitting that the theme would extend long after the conclusion of the game.

Students have been urged to buy pink shirts to BTHO breast cancer for this week’s game at Kyle Field. And, in the spirit of giving, several players have decided to help out.

Flippin’ J Entertainment, comprised of senior Flip Perry, a former wide receiver, and junior quarterback Jerrod Johnson, is putting on their first big event at 10 p.m. Nov. 21 at The Tap in College Station. The event will benefit the American Cancer Society.

“I know how Aggies stick together and I was at the house and was watching an ad on

this week’s Pink Out, and I started thinking that maybe there is something we could do,” Perry said.

The two started the group a year ago in hopes of helping out while having fun.

“Flippin’ J was an idea Flip and I came up with last summer as a way we could provide a safe, fun atmosphere for all of our friends to have a good time and in the process help out others,” said Johnson “Hopefully everything Saturday turns out to be a huge success.”

Perry and Johnson said they hope to fill up The Tap on Saturday night with Aggies looking to have a little fun and at the same time support a good cause.

“Everybody should come out, show up, dress in pink and white, have a good time and help cure breast cancer,” Perry said.

Group gives back with benefit concerts Mattie Williamson The Battalion Texas A&M students Matt Oberhelman, a senior psychology major, Christopher Thomas, a senior technology management major and Robert Recer, a junior accounting major, wanted to make a difference with their music.

They started Headphones 4 Hope, an organization that puts on benefit concerts for other nonprofit organizations and charities. “We were tired of awareness concerts because we all know the world sucks,�

Oberhelman said. “We wanted to do something proactive.�

Oberhelman and his band, Fairview Avenue, had tried working with nonprofits before, and after Thomas played in a benefit concert with him, the two decided to take the idea further. Headphones 4 Hope became an officially recognized student organization in August 2009. “There’s a lot of organizations that are nonprofit and they do a lot of really good things but they have to raise their own funds so we want to help them,� Thomas said. “We want to do something a little different and be a charity for charities.�

The cofounders said the group tries to give back as much as possible.

“[We’re] different from other nonprofits that usually keep something. We try to give everything we can. When we do a concert, the money we pull in, we just give every penny,� Oberhelman said. “It’s not our goal to make a profit.�

The group said for now they’re just getting started and helping other organizations coordinate events, but hopefully soon they’ll be able to put on their own concerts.

Most recently, the organization helped coordinate a concert benefiting the 1000 Wells Project, and the Java Jam Poetry Slam, which is being put on by One Love at 9 p.m. tonight at Muldoon’s Coffee House.

In the future, Thomas said they hope to do larger events, like concerts in Reed Arena or at Wolf Pen Amphitheater. “We’re taking baby steps. We’re trying to gradually get there,� Thomas said. “We can’t get there right now, but it’s definitely an aspiration.�

For now, the group wants to get their name out there and make people aware of what they do so they can make a bigger impact, Recer said. “I feel like after we do some more we’ll build a reputation and it’ll be easier for us to get bigger and get our name out there,�

Recer said. “It is our goal to get bigger and be a bigger resource to other charities.�

Although the group says they don’t need a lot of manpower right now, all are welcome to join, including non-students.

The co-founders said the response from students has been overwhelming. “We had like 160 people write down their names [at MSC Open House],�

Thomas said. “Of course, that was a little intimidating, we honestly expected maybe like 10 people to sign up. In the end, we have close to 50 members.�

Oberhelman said he admits he had no idea what he was doing in the beginning, but he has a better understanding now. “It was just that stirring inside [me] of God pushing me to do this and that was just a leap of faith turned awesome.�

Mayer makes brave statements in ‘Battle Studies’

Rocker’s new album shows change, growth

I

f you’ve heard his single “Who Says� on the radio or even if you’ve just read the back of the new album cover, you may think John Mayer is singing about violence, war and drugs, but that is not the case. The truth is John Mayer makes some brave statements in his songs including his newest popular line, “who says you can’t get stoned?� However, there is a deeper meaning to his songs proving you should not judge John Mayer by a cover or a title.

That being said, Mayer should not be judged by his early days of singing “Your Body is a Wonderland� either.

He’s grown into a different musician—he

reveals more of his true musical taste with each album. It seems his first album and perhaps the second were produced mainly to gain popularity and a large audience.

Mayer has since become more comfortable in his own skin with the release of “Continuum� and his most recent album, “Battle Studies.� His “pop� music has turned into more soft rock and blues—and the change has been for the better.

It is obvious Mayer cares about his music, especially with the new genres he’s falling into. His lyrics are carefully constructed and carry more weight than just words compiled poetically. Rather than wondering if “Who Says� is just about getting high, try viewing it as being about an individual’s choice to do what they want. There is a reason behind his rhyme, which attracts listeners and devoted fans.

John Mayer has a cover of Eric Clapton’s “Crossroads� on the new album.

The cover isn’t as good as some of the other covers he’s done, and it doesn’t seem to flow with the rest of the album.

The song seems to fit better with those from “Try!,� the John Mayer Trio album.

On the other hand, “Half of my Heart,�

featuring Taylor Swift turned out to fit well in his line-up. “Heartbreak Warfare,� the first song on the album, sets the tone for the rest of the songs, in meaning and style. Like the first page of a good novel, it will leave you wanting more, and you’ll be glad to know there are 10 songs that follow.

The guitar playing is impressive, which has been true for most of Mayer’s career and as it is matched with his distinct voice, the music is a true treat for the ears and the soul. It’s definitely not dance party music, but it is perfect for studying, car rides and just plain listening.

Overall, the CD is a terrific buy and is destined to attract a wide array of listeners.

The primary downside of the album is the high chance that it will distract buyers from listening to anything else for a very long time.

Senior Sarah Ammerman looks for strong finish to her career at Texas A&M Kyle Cunningham

The Battalion Despite towering over her competition at 6 feet 2 inches, a very threatening nickname (“Hammer”) and a vicious game, senior outside hitter Sarah Ammerman is an amiable individual. With an easy smile, Ammerman answers every question as if it were a ball floating over the net; she sees it, takes care of it and then moves on.

Ammerman comes from a volleyball family. Her mother Maria Ammerman played at the University of Alaska-Anchorage, and her father played club volleyball at Purdue and played as a member of the Men’s 45 and Over Gold Flight championship team in the 2005 USA Open Championships. Ryan, Sarah’s older brother, was the MVP of the 2009 NCAA Men’s Volleyball Championships and won a title at UC-Irvine before going overseas to play professionally. Two of her younger brothers both play collegiate volleyball in California.

She was never forced to choose the game, however.

“Everyone thinks I was forced to play volleyball,” Ammerman said. “I played soccer and basketball when I was younger. But when it came time to decide, I just loved volleyball.”

One of her biggest volleyball loves is Olympic gold medalist Kerri Walsh, who Ammerman calls “a phenomenal indoor and outdoor player.”

Her love of the game brought her to Texas A&M in 2006. In her four seasons, she’s seen the volleyball team produce mixed results (64-50 since 2006), but Ammerman says it’s been a success.

“It’s been an awesome experience, and it’s prepared me for challenges in my life later,” Ammerman said. “We haven’t experienced a bunch of success in my career, but the awesome people that have surrounded me have really helped develop me as a person.”

Aggies take on Baylor in Battle of the Brazos Brad Cox The Battalion For the second consecutive season, the Texas A&M football team will play Baylor for last place in the Big 12 South.

The two teams will meet Saturday at Kyle Field with conference records identical to their records when they played in Waco in 2008. The losing team will all but clinch the bottom position in the division.

“They’ll come in here, particularly based off of last year’s game, feeling they have a legitimate chance to win this football game,” A&M Head Coach Mike Sherman said. “It’s important for us to take control of the game and do

all we can to dissuade them from wanting to win this game.”

The Bears (4-6, 1-5) are coming off a 47-14 loss to No. 2 Texas while the Aggies (5-5, 2-4) are in the middle of their second losing slide of the season.

Both teams are chasing bowl eligibility as the end of the season nears.

A&M is one win shy of becoming eligible for the first time since playing in the Alamo Bowl in 2007 and Baylor needs to win its final two games, at A&M and against Texas Tech, to be bowl-eligible for the first time in 15 years.

“Anytime we have played these guys, it always seems to be an exciting game,” Baylor senior linebacker Joe

Pawelek said. “It’s a big rivalry and both sides are always amped up for the game. Also with both sides coming in, they need one more and we need two more for bowl contention, I think that it’ll be nothing short of how it usually is.”

The series, dominated by the Aggies in the 1990s, has taken on rivalry tones as the Bears, just 90 miles down Highway 6, have won two of the previous five meetings and lost a game in overtime in College Station in 2005.

Baylor had no problem destroying A&M in Sherman’s first season, running away with a 41-21 win behind then freshman quarterback Robert Griffin. In that game, Griffin passed

for 241 yards and rushed for 56 more.

Griffin was injured early in the 2009 season and has not played a game since, eliminating one of the top dual-threat quarterbacks in the nation from disrupting the Aggie defense.

A&M sophomore safety Trent Hunter said the absence of Griffin has altered the Bears’ offensive attack.

“They are throwing a lot more short routes,” Hunter said. “They aren’t throwing the deep balls quite like they did last year. They might throw some fades, because they have so much speed at wideout. But for the most part, they aren’t running the quarterback as much now.”

Freshman Nick Florence is control-

ling the Bears’ offense in place of the injured Griffin. Florence, one of the top freshman quarterbacks in the Big 12, has 1,609 passing yards and has thrown six touchdowns through the air.

her career overseas or play for the Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) in beach volleyball. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I want to play professional volleyball overseas,â&#x20AC;? Ammerman said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We went to Europe a couple of summers ago and toured around there. I really loved it. I love [beach volleyball]. If it would work out [to play in the AVP] I would love to play, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a lofty goal.â&#x20AC;?

Another possibility is news or sports writing. Ammermanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s minor is in agriculture communications and journalism, and she says she enjoys writing.

Of course, her life is not just volleyball. Ammerman loves Ne-Yo, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Remember the Titans,â&#x20AC;? and just relaxing with friends. Midnight Yell, Greek style A Greek Midnight Yell will take place at 10 p.m. Friday before traditional yell practice at midnight. The event is meant to connect all Aggie Greeks from the 56 fraternities and sororities and show the rest of the student body solidarity and support for traditions. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Greek life seems like it is not part of A&M, but we it easy areWe goingmake to Midnight Yell to... Kumar is part of Delta Phi Omega Sorority, which is part of the Multicultural Greek Council. The group will gather at Koldus for hot chocolate

Henry said track and field was nothing like football when it came to home field advantage, but did say there is nothing like performing in front of an Aggie crowd. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When I talk to my athletes, there is no question that an Aggie crowd is helpful,â&#x20AC;? The class reads the textbook, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Legends of Texas Barbecue Cookbook,â&#x20AC;? a recipe book by award-winning food writer, Robb Walsh. Walsh visited the class to do a guest lecture on cooking brisket. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was really great because Walsh came to speak to us earlier this semester,â&#x20AC;? Ting said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;He made the whole thing feel so important, because we werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t just learning how to cook but we were learning the history and reasons behind the meat is cooked that way.â&#x20AC;?

For example, Flavio Ribeiro, a Brazilian native and assistant professor in Animal Sciences at Texas A&M-Commerce came to teach the class about cooking traditional Brazilian style meats. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This class is really important because most freshmen donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know how to cook,â&#x20AC;? said Ribeiro, who obtained his doctorate in Animal Sciences from A&M in 2009. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In this class they learn how to safely cook a wide range of meats, which is a great skill to know, either for parties or even tailgating.â&#x20AC;?

For that reason, Ribeiro intends to take the idea of a freshman seminar class to A&M-Commerce. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This class really helps the student adapt to school and I think it would be great to implement the idea back home, perhaps even as a summer credit,â&#x20AC;? Ribeiro said.
