The Salsa Dance Night and Competition, presented by the Committee for the Awareness of Mexican American Culture, will take place from 8 p.m. to midnight today in Studio 12, located in the Commons. “The event is to promote the Hispanic culture throughout the campus,” said Jose Chapa, chairman of CAMAC. The night will consist of a dancing part, where anyone can join in, and a competition part Chapa said. The competition is free, and there will be a live band coming from Austin to play the Salsa music.

“Last year we had about 200 people show up so we are expecting about the same amount, maybe even more,” Chapa said. Students wishing to participate in the competition can sign up with any CAMAC member or can sign up at the event.

The Battalion Uzoma Nwachukwu is on pace to be the most prolific receiver in Texas A&M history.

It should come as no surprise then that his first name means “the road is good.”

“It’s funny because it’s motivating to me,” said Nwachukwu, who is a descendent of the Igbo people of Nigeria. “Because I think that God has a plan for me, and that the road is going to be good and everything is going to work out the way it’s supposed to.”

The 6-foot tall freshman whose last name means “child of God” leads the Aggies with six receiving touchdowns and 445 yards after six games in 2009.

If junior quarterback Jerrod Johnson continues to connect with Nwachukwu at the same rate, the man nicknamed “Eazy” will make sophomore Jeff Fuller’s record of nine touchdowns in a single season look easy.

Nwachukwu is on track for 12 single season touchdowns and 48 career touchdowns, and that’s not including a rushing touchdown he scored against Utah State on Sept. 19. In that game, Nwachukwu touched the ball four times and scored a touchdown each time.

“He’s growing as a player,” said A&M Head Coach Mike Sherman. “He still has a long way to go to be the type of route runner and the receiver that I want him to be. He’s not a complete receiver just yet but he’s working towards it, and I think someday he will be.”

In a 62-14 loss at Kansas State this past Saturday, Nwachukwu accounted for all

14 of the Aggies’ points on two receptions in the third quarter.

“He’s a great player and he’s put in a lot of work,” Johnson said after Nwachukwu’s game against Utah State. “He’s a young guy so it was exciting to see him get his first shot on Kyle Field. I’m happy for him, and I don’t expect anything less from him.”

Long before Nwachukwu donned the maroon and white, he had scholarship offers from across the nation from school such as Oklahoma, Notre Dame and Arkansas.

He was a four-star receiver on a state championship team. He could have chosen a school with a better record or a more pass — oriented offense, but he chose Sherman and the Aggies.

“A big part of it had to do with Coach Sherman selling the program to me,” Nwachukwu said. “He said he wanted to install passing and he needed the receivers to do it. He sold it real well and everything just felt right coming here.”

Sherman wasted no time throwing Easy into the fire. In his first game, Nwachukwu had three receptions for 53 yards, including a 42-yard reception on A&M’s first drive.

“At first, I was getting my juices going, my heart started beating a little bit,” he said after the first game. “It was a good experience because of the Twelfth Man. It was amazing to see them twirling their towels around.”

Nwachukwu continued to show off his abilities as the season progressed, sometimes looking like he was perfectly in tune with Johnson.

Much has been said in the media about the nature of the relationship between Texas quarterback Colt McCoy and receiver Jordan Shipley.

Though Nwachukwu and Johnson don’t fish together or throw the ball to each other from land to boat, Nwachukwu said they might have to find something to do like that.

“Jerrod’s a cool guy,” he said. “We share a lot of the same interests and things like that. We joke around all the time.

We have pretty good chemistry on the field and off the field. He’s just a fun guy to play with.”

One thing that binds the pair is their musical chops.

Nwachukwu, who likes to spend time with his guitar playing Gavin DeGraw’s “Follow Through,” said Johnson and freshman running back Christine Michael are two of the best singers on the team.

“They might have to have a singoff because that is a real close one,” he said. “They both can sing pretty good. I haven’t tried to get at them or anything like that. We’ll see.”

Nwachukwu jokingly said he might join up with the pair and release an album. A song at the top of the list could be “Lean on Me,” which has become an unofficial anthem for the Aggies.

“I get into that song because that’s my song right there,” he said. “I love it. I get real in rhythm. I get the guys going with that.”

But the football field is never far away, as is his potential future in the NFL.

Two weeks ago, Texas Tech beat Kansas State 66-14. This past Saturday Texas A&M lost at Kansas State, 62-14.

If Saturday’s game in Lubbock reflects those two games, the No. 21 ranked Red Raiders could break the record for most points scored in a game.

But neither team’s players are ready to admit victory or defeat in advance.

“It presents a challenge, but I feel like we’re up for the challenge,” said A&M junior quarterback Jerrod Johnson. “I’m looking forward to going out there; it should be a fun game.”

Lubbock has not been kind to the Aggies of late. A&M has failed to win at Tech since 1993.

With history and numbers on their side, the Raiders aren’t looking past the Aggies.

“We try to play one game a week,” said Tech linebacker Bront Bird. “Coach Ruff [McNeill] always says that it doesn’t matter who we play. The only reason we want to beat them is because they are next. They are next on our schedule.”

A&M Head Coach Mike Sherman is all too aware A&M’s difficulty against the Red Raiders. As the Aggies’ offensive line coach in the early 1990s, he witnessed the beginning of the Tech dominance.

“Certainly they have been a nemesis for A&M, particularly

here in the last seven trips, and even longer than that,” Sherman said. “They have kind of been a thorn in the Aggies’ side for a while.”

The Aggies lead the series alltime 34-32-1 but the Raiders have controlled it for the past 14 years, a time in which the rivalry between the two teams has been questioned by fans of both schools.

For many years A&M fans maintained that there was no rivalry, but as the frustration with continuous losses mounted, so did the hatred.

But for some Tech fans, the luster of a rivalry has been tarnished by the long win streak.

In the 1990s batteries were thrown at opposing players from the stands. In 2001, after defeating the Aggies 12-0 at home, Tech fans stormed the field and tore down the goal posts, marching them into the Aggies’ section of Jones Stadium.

The A&M defense will have the task of slowing down one of the top offenses in the nation, something it was able to do in the first half of the 2008 meeting.

Though the Raiders will be without quarterback Steven Sheffield, Taylor Potts, Sheffield’s likely replacement, proved himself as a starter before suffering an injury and missing two games.

“A lot of people think it’s plays and schemes and all that,” Kines said. “But if you look they do a great job throwing the ball, a great job catching the ball, a great job turning north after the catch.”

Forum weighs health care

Red light cameras up for vote Melissa Appel The Battalion As the Nov. 3 vote regarding the presence of red light cameras in College Station approaches, residents can be involved in acquiring information about the purpose and function of the red light cameras in preventing traffic violations and accidents.

There are nine red light cameras around College Station. The camera vendors did a study based on the occurrences of red light violations and red light accidents at various intersections and on the review of a citizen’s committee, decided where to place the red light cameras.

A red light camera violation is considered a civil violation. Therefore, individuals issued a ticket are able to appeal through a hearing or an appeal with a judge. If an individual is pulled over by an officer after committing the violation and later receives a red light camera violation in the mail, the red light camera violation is considered void and the individual must deal only with the officer-issued ticket.

In an effort to disseminate information regarding the red light camera issue, the City of College Station mailed out brochures to all College Station residencies.

“We just want to make sure everyone has the information,” said Assistant to the City Manager Hayden Migl.

“We’re remaining fully educational.”

College Station CARES, Camera Advancing Red Light Enforcement Safety, began in January 2008 with four red light cameras. After construction on Texas Avenue was completed, the additional five cameras were positioned.

The 7th Circuit United States Court of Appeals has ruled that red light camera systems are constitutional.

The installation of red light cameras is tightly regulated by state law regarding the process of issuing the violation and collecting the money. “‘Red light running,’ by state law, is crossing the cross bar when the signal is red,” said Assistant City Engineer Troy Rother. “If the signal

is yellow, you can legally cross the cross bar and enter the intersection.”

Red light cameras work with the aid of two wireless radio sensors in the traffic lane a few feet before the painted cross bar. As a vehicle passes between the two sensors, the speed of the vehicle is calculated and the sensor determines if a vehicle cannot stop before the cross bar. The system is only activated when the traffic signal turns red.

The red light camera takes a picture as a vehicle enters the intersection, a picture of the vehicle in the intersection and a 10-second video clip. State law requires, for a civil violation, photos may only be taken of the back of the vehicle and not of any passenger or driver. The photos and video are then compiled with driver information retrieved from the license plate, and a file of potential violations is sent to the city police department.

“A potential violation isn’t an actual violation until it is reviewed by a police officer,” Rother said.

Health care forum helps open up both sides of issue Samantha Johnson Special to The Battalion Thursday the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum presented a deliberative forum titled, “Coping with the cost of health care: how do we pay for what we need,” in partnership with National Issues Forums(NIFI) and the Kettering Foundation.

This marks the second year the presidential libraries nation-wide have partnered with NIFI and The Kettering Foundation to present these events.

Myrna Jacobsen, the moderator of the forum, said meetings like these are essential parts of making democracy effective.

“In order for a democracy to work, people have to have input and be educated,” she said.

“We hope to move beyond personal opinion and preference.”

In her introduction she said the goal is not for the participants to emerge from the forum in complete agreement with each other.

“Our purpose is not to reach a consensus, but to engage in critical thinking,” Jacobsen said.

Texas A&M Class of 1969 will meet to honor 11 fallen classmates from the Vietnam era at the memorial re-dedication Saturday as part of the 40th anniversary class reunion.

“This is a significant time for the Class of 1969, as we celebrate our 40th class reunion. We were students during a time of upheaval in the World in Southeast Asia.

Several Aggies died in service to our nation during that long war,” said Michael Caudle, who has coordinated the plans for developing, designing and replacing the memorial. “The keystone event will be the rededication of our new memorial to those 11 classmates who gave everything for our freedom today.”

The original marker, placed in 1996, was replaced Friday, and will be rededicated in the ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday. The memorial is located next to Coke Street near the west end of Fountain Hall.

The first of the three options presented was “reduce the threat of financial ruin,” which focused on making health care a requirement using driver’s insurance as a model.

The second option was to “restrain out of control costs,” a plan that would increase government involvement, enforce existing laws against fraud and require companies to accept all applicants. The model for this plan was compared to the operating process of utilities companies.

The final plan presented was titled “provide coverage as a right,” which said health care is a right that legal citizens are entitled to.

Dr. James F. Cooper was the first of the participants to speak as the group moved into the discussion time.

“I would just like to say that we are the government,” he said.

As the conversation progressed from topic to topic, themes of difference emerged.

One of the major problems with the first plan was a solution for enforcing mandatory health care was elusive. Cooper rejected the comparison with driver’s insurance and the proposed plan.

Police officers in the College Station Police Department work on overtime to review potential violators. When they receive the pictures, the officer first verifies the license plate number, license plate state and make of vehicle match the information from the vendor. The officer then studies the photos and watches the 10-second video to determine if a violation has actually occurred.

If the officer chooses to accept the violation, the information is sent back to the vendor. The violator is then mailed a notification that includes a copy of the pictures and a link to the video clip.

If the officer rejects the violation, all information is deleted and no notification is sent to the driver. This allows the police to review if a vehicle stopped at a point past the stop bar or if the camera had any malfunction.

A similar problem occurred during the discussion of the second plan which involved limiting what CEO’s in health care related corporations could earn.

“It sounds like a good plan, they make obscene amounts of money, but how would it be

Between the middle of April and the middle of August, 50 percent of violations involved a vehicle moving through the intersection on a red; 47 percent involved vehicles making right turns on red without coming to a complete stop.

Money collected from fines related to red light cameras is first used to pay the associated expenses. The vendor receives a flat rate of $4,750 per month per camera; this is regardless of how many tickets are issued. Revenue also funds the associated city staff, including the officers who work overtime to review all incoming potential violations. Finally, expenses are paid related to electronic ticket payments.

By state law, net revenue from the red light cameras is split evenly between the State of Texas and the City of College Station.

Family members of the deceased will be introduced, retired U.S. Army Chaplain and Class of 1969 Maj. Mike Curd will address attendees. Eleven white roses will be placed at the base of the memorial, and Class of 1969 and former Corps bugler John Poe will close the ceremony with a playing of Taps.

Current Texas A&M students will also take part alongside the Class of 1969 in memorializing the deceased Aggies.

“Take ‘American Pie.’ It’s a funny movie, but nobody can describe their relationship by those standards,” he said. “So this presentation is to say, there’s another side to that view. One of the cool things about The Longing is that it’s infinitely deep but so simple. The cool thing about this is that it’s an indicative message, because it applies to any person with a body, every culture on the planet. What becomes so personal about it is that it’s you deciding what it’s supposed to be.”

The seminar came from Pope John Paul II’s “The Theology of the Body.” West uses the series to speak about the subject in a way that is more easily understood. “‘Theology of the Body’ teaches us that our bodies our good and beautiful, and that sex is a gift from God when experienced between a man and a woman in the sacrament of marriage,” Hebert said.

Students involved in the planning of the event said the seminar is deeply personal and educational.

“The Longing discusses contemporary views of sex and sexuality as well as their origins,” said Paul Michael Piega, webmaster for the event.

“The Longing is a unique presentation that offers an organic understanding of human sexuality.”

Packer Stevenson, a junior economics major and Corps of Cadets representative, said The Longing also addresses the question of human purpose.

“The Longing seeks to dissect the meaning of truth, beauty and love and what it truly means to love,” he said. “It is meant to help us discover that

the freedom and love we all desire to experience is actually much more real and tangible than we all believe it to be.”

The idea of human purpose is what inspired the marketing campaign for the event. Students will be dressed up as gorillas and will hold signs asserting, “We are not just animals.”

“It is a take off on the song, ‘Ain’t Nothing but Mammals,’ by Bloodhound Gang, but putting aside the catchy beat, that’s not true,” Damo said. “We’re not just animals. Humans have the
