THE IMPORTANCE OF STUDENT PRESS

By Zack Benz Any community without access to fair, unbiased reporting suffers from misinformation. However, it takes more than just content to keep a news organization running. In recent years, The Bark, like many news organizations, has fallen prey to tough financial times.

Originally called the “Fortnightly Chronicle,” then renamed and formerly recognized as “The Statesman,” The Bark has a rich history spanning over 80 years, giving a voice to the student population and reporting on the news that matters to them.

“I believe, very much, in the role of the news,” University of Minnesota President Joan Gabel said. “It’s a difficult time, nationally, around freedom of information and respect for the role of journalism and journalism with integrity.”

Gabel stated that properly reported news is important to society but budgets can be a really tough conversation to

have. Gabel thinks many of society’s “critical functions” have to rethink what they do in order to be efficient.

“The hope would be that [news organizations] wouldn’t shut down,” Gabel said. “That’s a sincere hope. Before we would reach a critical point like [a shut down] we should be able to have ongoing conversations.”

The Bark serves as the official news organization for UMD and not only informs over 10,000 students and faculty, but the twin ports regional community as well.

The Bark’s first Editor-in-Chief, Ellie Gerst, stated she played a part in the publications rebranding and working at The Statesman, then later The Bark, provided her with a sense of community on campus.

“The Bark was important to me because it was the first time that I started digesting news at such a local level,” Gerst, Fall 2017 Editor-in-Chief of The Bark, said. “For me, community is really really important. UMD was

maybe the best community I’ve ever been a part of and in order to connect I had to stay on top of the news and The Bark was how I did that.”

According to Gerst, not only could she “digest” the news, she could participate in it.

“I think that’s really important for students to know,” Gerst said.

“You can get involved, and that is the whole purpose of The Bark.”

Gerst stated that it’s also important to note that The Bark is a student run news organization.

“It’s your peers delivering your news to you, so you know where your news is being sourced,” Gerst said. “You can go directly to the office and speak with the people writing your news.”

The Bark’s introduction to their code of ethics describes the importance of press best: “The First Amendment protects freedom of expression. The United States Supreme Court, almost without exception, has reinforced that freedom.

That freedom demands media responsibility, with priority assigned to certain standards of fairness and integrity.

The Bark is a publication created by students and published by the University of Minnesota Duluth Board of Publications.

It seeks to provide fair, informative, responsible and professional coverage of UMD students, faculty, staff and their surrounding communities.”

Statesman alum, Kim Hyatt, who now works for the Minneapolis Star Tribune, stated that student news organizations not only provides students with real world experience, it also serves as an “accountability factor” for the campus.

Hyatt started as a freelancer for The Statesman and credits her experience at the publication to helping start her career, which later lead to her employment at the Star Tribune.

“That’s what got me hooked on journalism,” Hyatt said. “I landed my first ‘A1’ story, and from that moment on, I didn’t want to do anything else with my life.”

Hyatt advised that the truth is important.

“It’s facts,” Hyatt said. “It’s the truth of what’s going on. [The truth] not being sugar coated like it would be when coming from University Relations.”

According to Hyatt, people need

a new perspective when it comes to seeing the importance of student media.

“It benefits more than just journalism students,” Hyatt said.

“You have art majors, business majors, marketing majors, this is a vital institution.

Hyatt stated that other news organizations in Duluth report on campus but when it comes to the UMD community itself, The Bark is the organization that reports more in depth.

“When you’re looking at student organizations, student groups, fun and interesting insights into what’s happening on campus, there’s only one outlet that can [report on] that, and that’s the student paper” Hyatt said.

Hyatt mentioned that news organizations are always going to face budget issues but institutions, like UMD, should protect media.

“There are always going to be cuts on campus,” Hyatt said.

“There always has been. I reported on them when I was a student there, but you need to protect things of value.”

Another former Editor-in-Chief of The Bark, Natalie Grant, who served during Fall Semester 2018, stated she’s also proud of The Bark’s accomplishments over the past two years.

“I think that The Bark is such an amazing organization for students at UMD,” Grant said.

According to Grant, The Bark, has always served as an outlet for students to use their voice. “[Student’s] really get that professional experience,” Grant said. “My favorite parts about The Bark is that we have rebranded ourselves to be more appealing to students and appealing to people of this generation. We took that into our own hands as a news organization and continue to push forward and continue to break down barriers.”

The Bark is recognized by Minnesota’s Better Newspaper Association and is an award winning publication that gives students a chance to practice and gain experience in the fields of journalism, art and design, as well as advertising and sales.

FESTIVAL OF TREES Location: The DECC 350 Harbor Dr, Duluth, MN 55802 Date and Time: Nov. 16-17 Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Info: Hosted by the Junior League of Duluth, the Festival of Trees is an annual event that typically hosts around 160 vendors. This large event also includes a visit from Santa Claus along with several live entertainment acts throughout the weekend. Each year this event collects over 3500 pounds of food for the Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank. Admission prices on Saturday are $6 per person and on Sunday $4 per person, however, $1 is deducted from the ticket price in exchange for a non-perishable food donation.

ALBUM OF THE MONTH: STURGILL SIMPSON - “SOUND & FURY” in my mind.”

It’s also the beginning of a dual story playing throughout the entire album: an intermittent, real voice amongst the roaring din of a fictional heroes and villains.

Sturgill Simpson knows how to set a scene. He opens his fourth and most recent album with “Ronin”, channeling Roger Waters-style sound effects: a car door closes like a gun, locked and loaded - strapped in - the hum of an engine begins to breathe - car stereo switches on - talk-radio stations crackle into tune on the spin of a dial, settling on a voice of “conspiracy”; and then the engine rages fully to life.

Finally, after 42 seconds in, music: high hats click crisply, toms and snares hit hard like pistons or industrial tools angrily cranking in a mechanical syncopation. The rhythm of a prowl on drawn-out guitar riffs crawls out of the speakers like some lost opening track of a Kings of Leon album - or maybe Jeff Beck in the 80s when he made “Guitar Shop.”

Cold and villainous, the second track, “Remember to Breathe,” lopes in on a bass of rhino legs, sinewy and heavy, with Sturgill wailing “let it happen,” and “remember to breathe,” like a mad doctor putting his victim down. The feeling of Ronin’s prowl (“I go out late at night just to see what I can find/ Stayin’ in the shadows where the light don’t ever shine”) has now slipped into the sound of a serial killer trapped in his own head “having one-way conversations with the darkness

Sturgill sings as someone who’s had to fight with some of his own domineering mental demons.

Particularly relatable to anyone who’s found it impossible to fight off darkness is the line “He does all the talking ‘cause I’m the quiet kind.”

Across these opening tracks, it’s apparent this is Sturgill’s guitar album. The diversity of notes slither, scream and slide across a cinematic, Mad Max landscape. This is more electronic, more mechanical, and more of an epic journey than anything Sturgill has done thus far.

He’s done plenty in three previous albums: outlaw country, psychedelic country (with some guitar jams coming straight from the Hendrix songbook), and soul (with the Dap Kings) on his third album.

But no one could have foreseen his fourth outing arrive like a descendant of 80s ZZ Top, even echoing the quiet-butvoluminous beauty of “Rough Boys.” It’s a sound too big for headphones; you need to hear this in a car, or from large living room speakers. It’s a sound that needs to leap out, to breathe large like a Pink Floyd album or burn loud like “Eliminator” of “Afterburner.”

Central to the album are other cuts that sound like dance songs from some futuristic club, especially “Sing Along” with its stabbing keyboards and greasy guitars and (immediately following with no break) the even-faster-paced “A Good Luck.” It’s that second toetapper that really causes a WTF moment, sliding into BOTH a disco bass AND a country line-

dancing bounce. It’s anything goes. It’s Sturgill’s world, and you’re just along for the ride.

At the album’s core, “Make Art, Not Friends” seems to speak to all of this innovation and diversity as he - in one of his most relaxed, resigned tones - sings that he would “rather be alone/think I’m gonna just stay home/and make art, not friends). Like he doesn’t care if you like his creativity or not - it’s his art, take it or leave it.

He even dishes up some tracks verging on metal, like “Best Clockmaker on Mars” and “Last Man Standing,” with one-twothree drum smacks throbbing fast - no let up - and vocals almost spat out in an Eminemlike speed. The guitar riffs never let up either.

It’s the last two songs that might be the most perplexing, and most interesting, especially arriving back-to-back.

“Mercury in Retrogade” is a terrific mid-tempo pop song, but it’s also the most personal cut, addressing Sturgill’s critics who’ve accused him of deserting his country roots.

And when the final cut arrives,

those critics might really have something to scream about, as the droning dirge of “Fastest Horse in Town” pours forth for seven minutes of distorted guitar over a howling, incomprehensible Sturgill.

But see Netflix for the anime film version, and it all makes sense, even that final cut - especially as it roars background to the closing credits of the movie.

Stay for the ending, just like a Marvel movie. Only, Sturgill’s ending is CRUCIAL to his story.

But unlike a Marvel movie, there’s no telling what he’ll come up with next.

By Izabel Johnson Canal Park is a flourishing tourist area during Duluth summers, which makes it a central hub for many businesses.

But, when temperatures drop and the sand on the beach is replaced with snow, these establishments face a major challenge.

The cold weather in Minnesota prevents many people from leaving their homes and tourists from visiting during the winter. This means that local businesses see a major drop in sales during the weekdays of the colder months. This can significantly alter the strategy of many business owners and the morale of their staff.

“Our lunch is definitely slower, so nobody really wants to work the mornings,” the bar manager at 310 Pub, Donald Soulak, said about the slower months. “Morale [is] definitely low...We actually stopped opening up Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday.”

This is not unique to 310 Pub. Most businesses in the area practice a similar strategy.

“We cut the amount of staff

CANAL PARK BUSINESSES FACE DIFFICULT TIMES THROUGH THE WINTER that’s on per shift almost in half, if not more,” Jacquelyn Evans, the general manager at Green Mill Restaurant and Bar, said.

Canal Park consists mainly of restaurants, hotels, cafes, and shops that line the boardwalk along the shore of Lake Superior. They center around major attractions such as the Aerial Lift Bridge and the DECC. It seems as if there is always something happening in the Canal Park area during the summer, but often winter events only occur on the weekends. Due to this major change in activity, business rates can be unpredictable.

Jordyn Spry, an employee at the Caribou Coffee located in Canal, shared her experience with the inconsistency of business in the area.

“Sometimes there will be like a Bulldog game and we are understaffed...and we are like screwed, ya know?” Spry said.

For this reason, many businesses keep a close eye on scheduled events, such as the Bentleyville “Tour of Lights” and hockey games or

concerts that take place at the DECC. “Bentleyville really makes our rushes at night,” Spry said. “We are pretty steady throughout Bentleyville season.”

Oct.15 to May 14. However, even with this perk, there are often not enough spaces.

This can deter people from frequenting the businesses.

Unpredictability is not the only obstacle faced by Canal Park staff.

“Parking is a main concern of mine...there really isn’t a place to park and that’s a big problem,” Evans said. “I think a ramp would be huge.”

“A con [to being located in Canal Park is] definitely parking,” Soulak said.

With the negatives of Canal Park, there also comes positives.

Canal Park is a condensed area, and because of this, most buildings are within walking distance of each other and a majority of the available space is used by venues. This leaves little room for parking lots.

When bartender Chris Loudon was asked about the positives of working in Canal Park, he simply said, “cash.”

Most places do not have a parking lot specific to their business and the majority of Canal Park lots require a permit or payment to park.

“We have four metered spots in front, which...are filled up... with people that don’t even come here,” Soulak stated in regards to the parking at 310 Pub.

Loudon is a bartender at Green Mill Restaurant and Bar and has been an employee at the establishment for 20 years.

“You have a really nice mix,” Loudon said when comparing the clientele of Canal Park to other locations where he was previously employed.

“You have students, you have locals, you have tourists.”

BULLDOG OF THE MONTH: ANDREW WEISZ

By Heidi Stang UMD senior Andrew Weisz, who graduates this December, is the epitome of involved.

The senior from Plainview, Minnesota has certainly made the most of his time here. Currently the President of at least two clubs and the coach of another, he also works in the Office of Admissions, and at a start-up in Duluth.

As if this schedule wasn’t enough, he’s also involved with transitioning the UMD pep band drumming section, is the event director for the Shark Tank Entrepreneur Competition that UMD hosts in the spring and is apart of the Glensheen Advisory Council as student representative.

He is currently running the Lettuce Club, cofounder and co-president of the League of Extraordinary Film Critics, runs the UMD Tour Guide Club and is Coach of the Quidditch Club.

“I came up here and right when I walked in it felt like home,” Weisz said.

For UMD students looking to get involved in the future Weisz says, “Follow your passions and if there isn’t something [that exists yet] start it. All you need is four friends and an idea to start a club, and any one can be an entrepreneur.”

Weisz is a double major in Entrepreneurship and Organizational Management with minors in Marketing and Sustainable Business and Organization.

putting his social and entrepreneurship skills to use working at an app start-up in Duluth, by UMD alumni, called Platonic.

The app is currently in the beta phase, or beginning stages, but is focused around people meeting friends, not romantic partners.

Weisz is hoping to continue his entrepreneurship path after school but doesn’t have a set plan.

He hopes one day to start his own company and acknowledges how Duluth is a great place to do just that.

has been starting his own company within the Entrepreneurship major.

All Entrepreneurship majors have a company idea by the time they graduate UMD. The company that him and his co-founder started is a sustainable bandana company. Inspired by his partners mother’s inability to find a good bandana.

They decided to create bandanas with looks for

everyone. They’re made of sustainable materials, come in different looks and styles, and portions of every sale go to a different charity.

From clubs to companies Andrew Weisz has been creating and inventing new ideas. As his time at UMD comes to a close you’ll be sure to find him as involved as possible before the semester is up.

“The Duluth community is absolutely fantastic for entrepreneurs,” Weisz said. “It’s everywhere you go. There is a new business or somebody with a great idea, so it’s just my turn to be the one with that great idea.”

He has been looking into several fields for his future company, real estate, the tech world, but said his true idea is just going to hit him one day.

As for right now he is applying to places like Hulu and Google, trying to get in the tech sector world.

While his time at UMD is coming to a close Weisz reflected on his time at UMD. “One of my favorite things is the fall tabling session, just because you can see so much,” Weisz said.

“There’s a lot of freshmen coming in. You can just see so much opportunity.”

By Dominic Jose Bisogno Few traditions define Fall in Minnesota like hunting and fishing. While many characterize hunting as a rifle or shotgun-centric activity, another form of hunting continues to thrive in the midwest: bowhunting.

A 2011 study from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service showed that 33 percent, or a third, of people who hunted in that year used a bow partially or entirely. Just four years later a survey from the Archery Trade Association showed that archery participation, though not exclusively for hunting, had “increased over 20 percent from 2012 to 2015”.

Archery is on the rise and bowhunting is proving popular with hunters, but what fuels this more traditional form of hunting and sport in a time when guns are accessible and engineered to the highest possible performance level?

One place that facilitates conversations about bowhunting at UMD is the Rod and Gun Club. Ian Radcliffe, president of the UMD Rod and Gun Club, is an avid bowhunter, as is fellow member Sam Doboszenski.

Radcliffe started to bow hunt in high school, while Doboszenski has taken part since the age of seven.

Radcliffe explained that one way deer hunting with a bow stands out against rifle hunting is the long list of challenges that come with it.

“You have to call the deer in a lot closer,” Radcliffe continued. “It’s a lot harder when you’re bow hunting usually you’re going early in the season so the deer aren’t moving as much and you

Doboszenski added that while all hunting has obstacles, bow hunting is far more personal and up close.

“Something we always say is we like counting the eye lashes,” Doboszenski explained. “It’s cool being that close to something. With a rifle you still do have close encounters with a gun, but with a bow you have to bring them in so much closer.”

An additional challenge bowhunters face is misunderstandings from many who assume the worst.

Doboszenski explained that bow hunting is often the most humane way for an animal in the wild.

“A lot of people think that’s not as humane, but actuality I’ve dropped deer a lot sooner with a bow than I have with a gun,” Doboszenski explained.

“A good shot with anything is going to be humane and that’s what you’re always looking for.”

Doboszenski added that for most bowhunters, humane hunting is a priority.

“Anytime the taking of an animal’s life is involved there needs to be practice.

Everybody’s made a bad shot,” Doboszenski continued. “You work harder that next year so you don’t make that shot again. When I’ve killed a deer I walk up, I honestly thank them, I put a hand on them and thank them for this sacrifice that’s going to feed me, my family, and take care of a lot of people.”

Radcliffe added that while there are hunters that don’t

follow these practices, it’s best to not let them define the hunting community.

“There’s always those guys that didn’t get enough practice in and don’t really know their set up and don’t know what poundage their shooting and they just let arrows fly,” Radcliffe explained. “Those kinds of guys are the kind that ruin it for everyone” According to an annual review published by the Arrowhead Bowhunters Alliance (ABA), an organization which manages education, profinecancy tests and applications for bowhunting in the Duluth area, “[ABA] placed 285 hunters into the 2018 Duluth City Bowhunt. Those 285 hunters harvested a total of 240 white-tailed deer (182 antlerless & 58 antlered males).”

The ABA are one of many organizations in Minnesota, and particularly the Twin Ports area, that focus on maintaining healthy and ethical hunting.

Other organizations at play include the Duluth-based United Northern Sportsmen and the Department of National Resources (DNR).

Bow hunting requires a bow and arrows, of course, but also various other gear and attachments. For some this price can rise high, an important decision for students on a budget.

“You could spend upwards of two or three grand on a single bow set up, but not everyone needs that,” Radcliffe continued. “My bow was handed down to me from my dad and then all the accessories were about

$500. Plus the gear, you can go pricey with something like Sitka or Nomad. There’s a lot pricey brands out there that are really nice and quiet and breathable, but you don’t have to get those.”

Doboszenski added that while his and many other set ups come with considerable price tags, this isn’t a requirement for hunters.

“If you want to be affordable, you can do it,” Doboszenski explained. “My bow is pretty expensive. Do I need that expensive bow to kill a deer?

No. Any bow will do it with the right practice.”

The deer bowhunting season in Minnesota goes from September 14th to December 31st. Meanwhile firearms season, according to the DNR, ranges from the ninth to 24th of November. An additional firearms period goes from the 23rd of November to the first of December. Muzzleloaders, meanwhile, are open from November 30th to December 15th.

As far as getting started goes, Radcliffe says the best way is to go to your local bow shop and ask questions.

“I brought my stock bow to a bow shop and got it all rigged up… They helped me out, got me fit with the right size arrow, they cut it for you.

Bow shops are a really good tool and resource. It’s the first place I would go.”

Consult the Minnesotan department of the DNR for further information on hunting, bow or otherwise, and how to go about it legally.
