- The Barbados Yacht Club

I hope you all had an enjoyable Christmas and New Year. The Club had a very busy December with many special events and private functions, many of which are featured in this edition of the Bellbuoy Our Old Year’s Night dinner and beach party were the real highlights of the year Ticket sales for these events were better than they have been for some time although not at the high number we used to see many years ago. I doubt we will ever see 1,000+ again

The new kitchen equipment is working well although we had a few service challenges because of the sheer number of members using the beach facilities over the Christmas period It would be helpful to us if members planning to bring a large number of guests in on a given day would notify us the day before so we can better organize.

As usual at the beginning of the year, we welcome two new committee members, Keithan Laurie and Jonathan Still Keithan, as featured on page 4, will take over as Chair of the Entertainment Committee and Jonathan as Chair of the Boating Committee. I wish to thank our outgoing committee members Darrin White and Simone Pasmore for doing

such an excellent job during their term of office.

The perennial issue of non-members coming into the Club was raised at the AGM. The problem is not people walking on off the street, this is usually well contained by security, it is members bringing in guests more than twice a month. We are planning on introducing an electronic system at the gate that will allow security to monitor the number of times a guest is introduced The system will also provide us with other useful statistics

There are other Rules and Regulations of the Club that are often breached by members. The one we get the most complaints about concerns the behavior of children or children being in the Club unsupervised. Please read the regulation reprinted on the back of this edition of the Bellbuoy

The highlight of this month will be the annual Sailing Week, including the round island race on the 21st. Details of all the week’s events are in this Bellbuoy and also posted on the Notice Boards. The Cruising Club takes the lead in organizing Sailing Week in collaboration with the Yacht Club, the Barbados Sailing Association and other water sports organizations The week involves a number of social events so please come out and support our sailors and water sports enthusiasts

I wish all our members and visitors all the best for a safe, happy and peaceful 2023. Let us hope the coming year does not bring as many challenges as we have experienced for the last two years

Special Feature

WELCOME!

Meet Keithan Laurie, newly elected member to serve on the Management Committee and Chair of the Entertainment Committee.

100 XO RUMS

Keithan has been a club member since childhood and was an avid youth sailor and self-confessed not-sogreat tennis player. Married to Geoffrey Evelyn (not the previous Commodore), She holds a Master's degree in Business Management, is a veteran marketing and communications specialist, and has considerable experience in event management She is happy to lend her expertise and skills to the club especially now as it prepares to celebrate its centenary in 2024.

We take this opportunity to welcome Keithan to the Committee

Ralph Bruggadung Johnson

Early December, Ralph’s long time friends from the UK were visiting Barbados For the first time since Ralph’s passing and COVID there was an opportunity to celebrate Ralph’s life with a 100 XO rums in the Shot Hall Bar Unfortunately not all of his friends and family were able to attend -

I would like to thank the staff of the Barbados Yacht club for accommodating us, making the evening special and Peter for the great pictures! There will be another celebration...
