Filmmakers, authors, artists, and athletes entrust us with their creative works and feats of passion year after year. We are honoured by this, and extremely grateful! Still, every year, we’re repeatedly asked, “Where are the women?” Clearly many of you are missing women’s stories, missing role models for yourselves and your daughters, missing the female perspective. The stories exist. That, we know. Take just the last couple of years of live presentations here in Banff: Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner, Dervla Murphy, Lynsey Dyer, Pat Deavoll, Edurne Pasaban, Sarah McNair-Landry, and Maria Coffey have all graced our stages and shared their adventures.

This year we welcome adventurer, Cecilie Skog and big wall climber, Sílvia Vidal. Our Opening Night Film, The Summit, features Skog – who will be in attendance along with director, Nick Ryan.

2013 also sees Tim Cope, who won the 2011 People’s Choice award for this film On the Trail of Genghis Khan, return with his finished book of the same journey. Jonesy and Aleksander Gamme of the 2012 triple-award-winning film, Crossing the Ice, will romp on stage together for the first time ever. Tom Randall and Pete Whittaker make their first Canadian appearance following 3 the success of the short film, Wide Boyz (Best Short Mountain Film 2012). And how better to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the first ascent of Everest than in stunning 3D with Canadian director, Leanne Pooley’s Beyond the Edge; a conversation with environmentalist and former Himalayan climber, Apa Sherpa; presentation and exhibition comprised of George Lowe’s remarkable photographs as presented by author Huw Lewis-Jones; and 2013 Voice of Adventure Tom Hornbein, to help mark the 50th anniversary of the first American ascent of Everest.

BOOK COMpEtitiOn and intErnatiOnal Jury The 20th annual Banff Mountain Book Competition marked an exciting change to our award announcement process and the addition of an award category, Mountain Fiction and Poetry. This year, we received over 130 titles from 10 countries and once our longlist was established, thanks to the tireless reading efforts of our volunteer readers, our international jury went to work establishing the shortlist of award winners and the Grand Prize winner.

BRUCE KIRKBY (CAN) is a writer, photographer, traveler and adventurer. As a writer he has contributed work to The Globe and Mail, Explore Magazine, and Canadian Geographic. He is the author of two bestselling books, Sand Dance and Dolphin’s Tooth. His journeys have taken him across Arabia by camel, down the Blue Nile on raft, and across Iceland by foot.

BOOK signings

ANIK SEE (NED) has travelled the world by bicycle for more than 25 years, having logged more than a million kilometres from Patagonia to the Caucasus mountains. Her writing, both fiction and non-fiction has appeared in The Walrus, Brick, The National Post, Toronto Life and, as a contributing editor, in Outpost Magazine. She is the author of three books all of which reflect her love of remote cultures, landscape and the possibility of place.

STEVE SWENSON (USA) has a 45-year climbing career and nearly 20 expeditions to Asia under his belt – and he has made ascents of the North Ridge of K2 and the North Ridge of Everest solo – both without supplementary oxygen. In 2012 he made the first ascent of Sasser Kangri II (7518 metres) and was awarded the prestigious Piolet d’Or. Swenson is a past president of the American Alpine Club and as a writer has contributed to the newly released Rock, Paper, Fire anthology.

COMpEtitiOn and awards The 2013 Banff Mountain Film Competition saw 365 films submitted from 36 countries. One of the most difficult jobs at any competitive festival is choosing the winners. This process starts with our pre-screening committee, who this year viewed all 365 films. From these, 89 finalists were selected.

During the Festival, our international jury – selected to represent a range of knowledge and experience in film production, distribution, film criticism, and mountaineering – screens each finalist and determines the award winners.

suMMit OF ExCEllEnCE award Presented by the Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival at The Banff Centre since 1987, and sponsored by Canadian Mountain Holidays the annual Summit of Excellence Award recognizes an individual who has made a significant contribution to mountain life in the Canadian Rockies. The Award is presented in memory of Calgary climber Bill March.

There aren’t many people who venture into the mountains in Western Canada without first taking a look at the Handbook of the Canadian Rockies. Consistently updated through the years and known as “the Bible” for Canadian mountain enthusiasts, it logs every plant, animal, and rock type found in the region, written for both weekend hikers and serious mountaineers. The Handbook’s author, BEN GADD, a teacher, naturalist, guide, and award-winning author, will receive the 2013 Summit of Excellence Award on Sunday, November 3, during the awards presentation in the Eric Harvie Theatre.

Mountaineer Barry Blanchard, one of those who nominated Gadd for the award, said “I can think of no other person who can tell me what is going on 10,000 feet below me, as well as 10,000 feet above.” As part of the Summit of Excellence award committee, Bernadette McDonald added, “Ben Gadd’s knowledge of natural history in the Canadian Rockies, and the way in which he shares that knowledge, is a huge contribution to the people who live here and to tens of thousands of those who visit the area.”

In addition to researching and writing the groundbreaking Handbook of the Canadian Rockies, Gadd has written nine other books including the best-selling novel Raven’s End, and he’s received three Banff Mountain Book Competition awards for his work. With a degree in earth science, Gadd has pursued a career mainly in natural history, including working for Parks Canada as a naturalist.

He has taught writing at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology and Grant MacEwan University, and for nearly 30 years has worked as a freelance interpretive guide – one of only eight master guides in Canada’s professional Interpretive Guides Association – and as a writer and sought-after lecturer on Rockies topics. Gadd supports various conservation groups in promoting wilderness protection.
