A Message from the Head of School

Dear Members of The Baldwin School Community,

The 2024-25 school year was a tremendous one, bringing continued growth and success to Baldwin. Empowered by Florence Baldwin’s vision, and centered in our mission to develop talented girls into confident young women, Baldwin undertook a comprehensive, community-centered strategic planning initiative to chart the institution's future trajectory while preserving our foundational mission and values. The Brilliance of Baldwin, our strategic vision for the future, will serve as Baldwin’s guide forward as we strengthen what has always been true to our School while developing new, innovative educational paths and empowering our girls to define their futures.

The Baldwin Fund achieved remarkable success this year, exceeding our fundraising goal and raising $2,276,176 in direct support of Baldwin students. This represents a significant investment in our girls' daily educational experience and extraordinary achievements. Your generosity extended across all areas of giving, with an additional $1.7 million supporting our endowment and another $1.7 million enabling critical capital projects on campus. Combined philanthropic support exceeded $4 million, touching virtually every corner of our campus and directly enabling student success.

Your investments in Baldwin have allowed us to continue creating an educational environment that yields exceptional results for our students. Twenty-seven Baldwin Seniors, representing 41% of their class, received recognition from the National Merit Scholars program, while students of all ages earned prestigious awards from the Philadelphia Classical Society, Scholastic Arts competitions, the Elite International Music Competition, and the International Conference on Cyber Warfare and Security. Five studentathletes committed to competing at the collegiate level, and three current students competed in the Junior Olympics this summer.

The launch of the Kit Reath Fellowship this year created a selective recognition program for students pursuing social impact projects, and new innovative courses in myriad disciplines were offered in the Upper and Middle School. We were honored to expand our professional development and welcome Dr. Lisa Damour, a national leader in all-girls education, who shared her expertise with our community. These opportunities for enrichment and growth exist because of your continued investment in our mission.

The installation of our new turf field on the upper campus represents a transformative investment in our student-athletes. This state-of-the-art facility features a modern, all-weather playing surface for field hockey, lacrosse, and softball, with enhanced performance capabilities for year-round training and conditioning. The project also includes a new stone terrace and

natural amphitheater seating framed by our historic cherry trees, along with rain garden integration that supports our environmental stewardship values. This development brings home competition for field hockey and softball back to campus for the first time in many years, creating new opportunities for community gathering and school spirit.

While we celebrate these financial achievements, we recognize that these figures represent far more than statistics. Each contribution directly translates into enhanced learning opportunities in every classroom, support for student research and competition participation, resources for innovative programs, and facilities that enable our student-athletes to compete at the highest levels. Your support also funds professional development that keeps our educators at the forefront of girls' education, ensuring we continue to understand and respond to the evolving science of how girls learn.

As we implement The Brilliance of Baldwin, we remain committed to the principle that when clear vision meets purposeful opportunity, and when a committed community unites behind a shared dream, brilliance becomes inevitable. Your continued support ensures that Baldwin graduates will continue to lead and innovate, prepared not just for today's world but for tomorrow's challenges and opportunities yet to be imagined.

We extend our heartfelt appreciation to our families, alumnae, faculty, staff, and friends whose dedication and generosity make excellence possible. Your belief in the brilliance of Baldwin girls transforms our shared vision into reality every day. Together, we are building upon our strong historical foundation while embracing new possibilities for learning, growth, and making a positive impact.

Thank you for believing in the brilliance of Baldwin girls and for your partnership in shaping the next exciting chapter of our School's future. We look forward to continuing this journey together, rooted in tradition and redefining the future.

With gratitude and excitement for what lies ahead,

2024-2025

Highlights from Campus 2024-2025

41% of the 2025 Senior Class Honored by National Merit Program

The 2025 Senior Class had 27 students recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program. For last year's National Merit Scholarship Program, 12 Baldwin students were named Semifinalists, 13 students were named Commended Students, two students were honored with a National African American Recognition Award and one student was honored with a National First Generation Recognition Award.

The 66 students in the Class of 2025 received 358 acceptances to 180 unique institutions. With an average SAT score of 1420 and an average ACT score of 31, 55% of the class were admitted to the most highly selective schools with an acceptance rate of 15% or lower.

Grade 4 and 5 Math Olympiads

Baldwin had 54 of its 4th and 5th grade girls among the nearly 120,000 students worldwide participate in the Math Olympiads Program last school year. They participated in a series of five contests of five problems each, each month from November to March. Gold medals are awarded for 1st place in each grade level: the Highest Scorer medal in 4th grade went to Lina Kuoch ’33, and the highest scorer medal in 5th grade went to Michelle Dou ’32. Silver medals are awarded for 2nd place in each grade level: in 4th grade there was a tie with Marina Markle ’33 and Alisha Bose ’33, and in 5th grade it went to Kayla Tian ’32.

Grade 8 Students Blend Literacy and Visual Arts Together

In a captivating fusion of literacy and visual art, talented 8th grade students exhibited original poems, drawing inspiration from Marcus Zusak's The Book Thief. Following an immersive field trip to the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore, these students explored the novel's powerful themes by focusing on symbolism, imagery, and perspective. Each student was challenged to select words and phrases from The Book Thief and create poetry that delves into deeper meanings, transforming both text and visual expression. The results are a striking collection of works that reflect the emotional weight of Zusak's historical fiction while also allowing each young artist to reimagine its significance.

The 2025 Senior Class proudly displays their college shirts. This kaleidoscope of colors represents the nation's most prestigious colleges and universities, showcasing the dedication and academic excellence that Baldwin women have achieved for decades.
Xiaoran Yan '29 and Gillian Gattuso '29 showcase their projects on "The Book Thief" which provided an opportunity to reimagine how literacy and art can work together to create a more engaging story.

Reed Fellowship Recognizes Dr. Oxana Harlamova

In honor of Marjorie Lindsay Reed ’39, the Reed Fellowship for Excellence in Teaching is our highest honor for faculty and awarded annually to a full-time teacher who exemplifies sustained excellence, a passion for teaching and a transformative influence on both students and colleagues. Last year, we were thrilled to celebrate Orchestra Director and Baldwin Conservatory Director Dr. Oxana Harlamova (P ’14, ’20), whose dedication to her craft and her students embodies the very spirit of Baldwin.

Oxana’s presence in Baldwin’s music program is woven into the very fabric of our School’s cultural identity. Over the past two decades, she has helped build and nurture the music program from the ground up. Her tireless work was instrumental in the creation of our strings program, where she has taught students of all ages — from the youngest beginners to more advanced musicians — and helped cultivate a space where musicians thrive. For Oxana, the classroom is not just a place for learning technical skills but a space for personal growth, creativity and artistic expression.

One of Baldwin's alumnae helped to secure a grant from AMG (Affiliated Managers Group, Inc.) to help Baldwin girls

"I am grateful to AMG for the opportunity to recommend the grant to Baldwin, which had such a profound impact on my formative development over the 12 years I was privileged enough to attend. Editing The Hourglass, and participating in the debate team, Model UN, and Model Congress were deeply important elements of my Baldwin experience, and I hope that the grant will enable a number of young women to participate in and learn from more extracurricular events, initiatives, and activities than they might otherwise have been able to." - Baldwin

Through a corporate philanthropy program called AMG Gives, AMG awarded Baldwin a $100,000 grant to help launch and fund the Future Leaders Fund. This restricted fund will provide assistance to students who want to participate in an activity outside of the classroom but may find themselves hindered by the costs of travel, boarding, or other out-of-pocket expenses. The fund will help cover these gaps and enable Baldwin girls to fully participate in co-curricular experiences. To date, this grant has helped 6 students attend a DECA conference and 3 students attend Model Congress.

Rosamond Cross Endowed Teaching Chair

Raphaelina Loke (P ’06, ’08, ’10), beloved Grade 12 Dean and veteran math teacher, was awarded the Rosamond Cross Endowed Teaching Chair. This prestigious honor, established in 1988 in memory of Baldwin’s fourth Head of School, Rosamond Cross, recognizes a full-time faculty member who has made an exceptional and lasting impact on the School community or the broader field of education.

To those who know her, it’s nearly impossible to imagine Baldwin without Raphaelina. Over her tenure, she has become a foundational figure — deeply respected by colleagues, trusted by students and admired by all for her wisdom, warmth and unwavering dedication. Whether she’s introducing ninth graders to algebra or helping seniors conquer calculus, Raphaelina brings clarity, structure and unmistakable passion to everything she does.

Students engage in lively discussions at the Model Congress table during the Upper School Club Fair. Generous donations from corporate philanthropy programs like AMG Gives ensure that every student can fully experience invaluable co-curricular activities.

Former Head of School and Honorary Trustee Blair D. Stambaugh, along with Head of School Lynne Macziewski, presented Raphaelina Loke (P '06, '08, '10) with the Rosamond Cross Chair. More than just a teacher, Ms. Loke has served as a trusted colleague, friend, and mentor to many, and her impact has touched numerous lives over the years.

Faculty and Staff Grant Awards

At the end of the last school year, Baldwin awarded 24 grants to faculty and staff for professional and personal development. Ranging from overseas trips to a collaboration with Bryn Mawr for the Baldwin Archives, these grants are an integral part of faculty and staff enrichment at Baldwin. Expanding their knowledge through travel, conferences, and collaborations, our faculty and staff are eager to share what they’ve learned with our community. Below faculty members Heather Wilson, Rachel Van Wylen and Patricia Weidler and staff member Catherine Box share what being awarded The William H. Simon, M.D. Faculty Enrichment Award in Science and the Humanities and the Anne C. Shoemaker Fund “Little Shoe” grant, respectively, has allowed them to learn and experience.

The William H. Simon, M.D. Faculty Enrichment Award in Science and the Humanities

Together, we set out to create an interdisciplinary project focused on illuminated manuscripts, blending our respective fields of biology, art, and Latin. This project will offer Baldwin students a unique opportunity to explore the integration of these disciplines and will allow them to connect the historical, artistic, and scientific aspects of manuscript creation.

This past summer, we began exploring the fascinating world of botanical inks and dyes by attending a hands-on workshop at the Stenton Museum. There, we experimented with creating inks from natural materials such as charcoal, ground ochre, gum arabic, and black walnuts that we harvested ourselves. Because medieval artists and scribes worked with inks and dyes much like these, our students will have the opportunity to craft their own historically inspired botanical inks. To deepen the experience, we will also be using a vellum-like surface reminiscent of that found in illuminated manuscripts, giving students a tactile sense of what these pages would have felt like.

The project is designed to integrate multiple disciplines: the biology of inks and dyes, the study of Latin poetry, and an appreciation for the artistry involved in creating manuscripts. Students will not only produce their own texts but also display their work, gaining insight by examining similar historical examples during a museum visit. Through this process, they will connect scientific inquiry, literary study, and creative expression in a hands-on, immersive way.

Anne C. Shoemaker Fund - “Little Shoe”

In the spring of 2025, I applied for and received the "Little Shoe" grant. I was moved by the award and excited to use it for a timely trip. The funds would go towards travel expenses for a journey designed to honor my late brother, Graham Powell. Just a few months into my first year at Baldwin, my brother passed away suddenly, and in 2025, we would have celebrated his 50th year. As one of four siblings, I wanted to honor him both collectively and individually for his 50th, respective of our unique relationships. Graham lived in big and passionate ways, and I needed to do something reflective of that.

My siblings and I knew that Graham intended to retire in Telluride one day. Therefore we took the remainder of his ashes to Telluride to help him accomplish that final goal. We hiked up the Bridal Veil Falls trail, quite a scramble, and deposited his ashes in a beautiful pool below stunning falls. We read poetry, played some music, and bathed in the sun. It was a truly unforgettable and spiritual experience. After fulfilling our mission, we spent a couple of days in Telluride fly fishing and enjoying the mountain town where Graham envisioned his final days.

Individually, my relationship with Graham was often defined by music. To personally celebrate his life, I used a portion of the "Little Shoe" grant to attend a concert at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, a music venue he loved and a truly bucket-list experience for music lovers. Serendipitously, one of Graham's best friends had planned to attend the show as well, creating an even more special celebration of our mutual love of music.

My hope was to use the "Little Shoe" grant for personal rejuvenation, but to leverage that time as an opportunity to model living in big and passionate ways-like Graham- for my students, demonstrating that grief, while painful, can also beautifully inspire our lives.

Baldwin In Bloom turns The Residence into an Enchanted Garden!

With a grand return to The Residence, Baldwin in Bloom had the main hall, dining hall and Baldwin Commons decked out in larger than life floral arrangements. Led by Auction Chairs Vesta Salehi (P ’36, ‘37), Marlo Dilks (P ‘29, ‘30, ‘31, ‘35, ‘35, ‘37), and Tanisha Walls (P ’35), the night was an overwhelming success for Baldwin with a record high number of patrons, exciting auction items and a paddle raise to support the new turf field project. A special thank you to Silent Auction Chair Kim Heuer (P ’27) and Patron Party hosts Christine and Louis Capano (P’ 31) for also helping to make the night successful. All the volunteers truly outdid themselves in transforming the space into an enchanted garden!

This year our Baldwin School Parents Association raised a total of $411,131 of which $285,710 went to support The Baldwin Fund. We are so deeply grateful to all those who volunteered their time and talent to events throughout the year.

Classes of Green Return to Campus!

During the first weekend in May, our alumnae from the Classes of Green returned to campus to celebrate their Reunion. The two-day event began on Friday at lunch with the senior class and was followed by The Alumnae Awards Presentation and Panel. Honored alumnae Amy Saler Ostroff ‘85, Alicia Roebuck ‘05 and Marjorie Yang ‘70 imparted advice, words of wisdom and a few stories from their own days at Baldwin to Upper School students. The day concluded with the all-class dinner at The Residence where the Class of 1960 was awarded the Champagne Challenge Cup and the Class of 1985 was awarded the Class of 1936 Reunion Challenge Bowl.

Campus was busy again on Saturday as many alums returned to take part in the Baldwin Scavenger Hunt, eat at the picnic lunch with their friends and family and hear from Head of School Lynne Macziewski on the current state of the school. Throughout the weekend, alumnae had the chance to participate in the Oral History Project. Led by our students, this project aims to capture alum stories in their own voices. The recordings will be housed in The Baldwin Archives for future generations of Baldwin girls. We are so glad that so many of our alumnae from the Classes of Green could return to campus for this special weekend!

The Baldwin in Bloom Community Auction and Dinner was co-chaired by Vesta Salehi (P '36, '37), Marlo Dilks ( P '29, '30, '31, '35, '35, '37), and Tanisha Walls (P '35). The event exceeded fundraising goals thanks to the generosity of the parent community.
At the Class of Green Reunion, Beth Tripp LaCour ‘75, Emily Yates ‘00, and Laura Nasuti ‘00 greet each other and catch up. From scavenger hunts to picnic lunches, the alumnae enjoyed a special weekend together.

Elizabeth Forrest Johnson Society

Established in the Spring of 1988, the Elizabeth Forrest Johnson Society recognizes those who continue the tradition of support begun by Miss Johnson, Head of the School from 1915 to 1941. Its members have made a contribution to Baldwin’s Pooled Income Fund, left a bequest to Baldwin in their wills, or have notified the School in writing that they have created a provision in their estate plans to benefit Baldwin. These provisions include bequests, charitable remainder and lead trusts, retained life estates, gift annuities, and life insurance.

The Baldwin School is deeply grateful to the people listed below who are continuing a tradition of philanthropy that allows Baldwin to remain a leader in independent school education.
