SGA Elections on ERAU Connection
Sarah Fairchild Copy Editor In the midst of all the excitement and festivities of Blue and Gold week, one important event seemed to slip under the radar. With SGA elections taking place this week, only a shocking minority of the student body bothered to attend the SGA elective ticket debate. Speaking to a small audience of approximately 30-45 people, the three trios of candidate elects were asked to give their solutions to a host of questions posed by a moderator and the audience members themselves. So, what were the highlights? Giovanni’s Ticket: Presenting themselves as student servants, this group of experienced leaders emphasized on marketing strategies and student feedback dictating their goals. With the rise of the new Student Union, one of the priorities for this ticket is to ensure the transition to the new building proceeds as smoothly as possible. They also plan to utilize the increased budget by giving back to the student body; enlarging organization spending, improving campus marketing, and potentially creating a shuttle service during peak ERAU traffic hours to assist with parking issues. Student involvement is paramount for this ticket, with Giovanni Cavallini (President) emphasizing the need and importance of feedback and face-to-face interactions with the student body. Graham’s Ticket: Featuring an all-engineer executive, this group was full of new ideas. Their out-of-the-box way of thinking invited for some creative solutions to issues such as parking. Andrew
WARNING
Wood (Vice-President) suggested putting sensors under the parking spaces and linking them to an app that would indicate which lots have open spaces. This way, commuters wouldn’t have to hunt for a free parking space, and can instead check their mobile devices to see what’s available. Unlike their opposition, this group’s plan on how to spend the SGA’s increased budget does not include drastic raises for clubs and organizations, but instead focus on putting the money towards improving and expanding the educational workshop labs on campus. In addition to updating the current SGA website, Graham’s ticket plans to be completely transparent with the SGA’s spending, promising to have financial information readily available to ERAU’s student body. While they may not have much experience working in student government, this group brings an optimistic, outside-in approach to the table. Chad’s Ticket: It’s said that knowing is half the battle, and this group of SGA vets knows their stuff. Holding approximately six years of student government experience between them, this group was able to lay out impeccably detailed plans for the future. Their goals for the increased SGA budget include having infrastructure improvements such as more computer labs, better sports fields, and other campus developments. Furthermore, the budget allows for more investment into clubs and organizations, as well as potentially providing more scholarship opportunities for ERAU students. One standout with this group is their close-knit relationship: while each member of Chad’s ticket specializes in certain aspects of SGA, it is
evident that all three candidates spend the time communicating with one another, discussing solutions as a group and really taking into account the feedback from students. As always, the goal of the Embry-Riddle SGA is to enhance student life through the provision of services, events, and representation while providing a means for students to communicate with the university’s administration. The Student Government Association is here to make the student experience at Embry-Riddle the best it can be, and voting for the upcoming officer positions is just one more way to let your voice be heard.
