was unable to perform as his first-born son was being delivered that night.

The opening band Stealing Vanity and WIKD’s own DJ’s stepped up to the plate and performed the whole night. The Caribbean Student Association made an appearance on the West Lawn cooking Jerk Chicken. Students entered their names into a drawing and won prizes including a Playstation 4 and a GoPro Hero 3.

Back in Business

The Avion Resumes Operations Trey Henderson Editor-in-Chief After a brief period of cease operations, The Avion has resumed publication as usual.

Late last week, after an announcement from the SGA’s Facebook page, rumors spread about The Avion’s demise.

Though it is true that the newspaper was temporarily

halted by Student Activities, The Avion was granted the opportunity to continue its operations after a short, 23 hour review.

In the following weeks The Avion will work closely with the Student Court to more thoroughly review our policies and proceedures to ensure that we continue to bring you the latest and greatest content on campus, in the aerospace industry,

This is something that is basically unheard of in the passenger airline industry,

where pilots are normally required to have at least 1000 hours under their belt before they are even considered to be hired.

Other companies and agencies in attendance at the event included the USAF 45th Weather Squadron, Express Jet, Delta Airlines, Horizon Air, Frasca International, Strategea Group, and many others.

What was quite fascinating about the event was listening to some of the different projects and programs that these companies were working on in the aerospace industry. One that stood out to me was Planetary Resources Inc.’s project to launch mining operations into outer space on asteroids, which would expand upon the natural resources

Valdeta Mehanja (Pilot) and Nancy Snyder (Co-Pilot) participated in the Air Race Classic (ARC) 2014 on June 16–19. They were among an elite cadre of female pilots who would even dare to attempt such an impressive feat in aviation, a coast to coast cross country air race. Not only did they participate in the race, they raised to the top and emerged victorious, claiming first place in the collegiate category and second place in the overall race.

At the Women in Aviation meeting on Oct. 1, I got to hear an amazing

story about their journey in the days leading up to and during the race.

From Daytona Beach, Mehanja and Snyder departed for San Francisco, which was near the starting point for the race, Buchanan Field Airport in Concord, CA. The journey there took them almost a week.

They encountered a maintenance problem on their Cessna 172 along with bad weather forced them to delay their trip.

Once the duo arrived in San Francisco, they had an opportunity to explore the city for a week. Val recounted that while in the city they ended up doing a lot of walking including cross-

ing the Golden Gate Bridge on foot.

The night before the race there was a banquet held for the competitors, where all the women in the competition had a chance to meet and greet each other. Val and Nancy both remembered how nice and friendly all the women were to each other at the banquet.

Finally, it was time for the race to begin. What makes this 2,388 nautical mile cross country race so difficult is the fact that the pilots must keep their aircraft above a set handicap ground speed at full throttle at all times, while flying 100% of the time in VFR conditions. Another obstacle

in the way of the pilots from Florida, where the ground is mostly flat, was overcoming the difficulties of flying through the mountain ranges. This was a challenge for them because at times they were experiencing turbulence and were trying to avoid hypoxia while flying through the thin air of the mountains.

However, even with all those trials stacked against them, they managed to complete the race in only two and half days out of the four that they were allowed, spending 25 hours of it in the air before landing at Capital City Airport in New Cumberland, Pennsylvania.

Let’s Go Flying

Here at Embry-Riddle the focus of almost everyone’s attention is skyward bound, however not every person on campus is an aspiring professional pilot.

There are many people who enjoy the thrill of flight but cannot become pilots for various reasons such as financial difficulties, ineligibility for medical certification, or heavy course load from another degree program.

Fortunately for non -flight students, there is a way to enjoy flying at Embry-Riddle - going on an observation flight. All that is required of you is to report approximately 30 minutes early to the Flight Operations Building before a scheduled flight block and gain the permission of both the flight student and the pilot instructor to go flying with them.

I personally fall into the category of students who cannot fly. I had an opportunity for an observation flight on Oct. 1 with Lindsey Pressley, who is cur-

rently working on her instrument rating. After I checked in at dispatch and got my ramp badge from the Flight Supervisor’ office, Lindsey took me out onto the ramp to the plane where I watched her go through her pre-flight checks that includes checking for fuel, cleanliness of the plane, and the amount of oil in the engine.

When it was time, we boarded the Cessna Skyhawk 172 and Lindsey with her instructor’s aid completed her checklist.

After the checks were complete and authorization had been given to depart, we began to taxi down to the runway, where we then had to wait for the tower to give us permission to takeoff. With clearance, we took off; it was quite amazing to see the view of the ground on the climbout, which from the inside of a smaller aircraft felt way different from being in a commercial airliner. So, it was like seeing everything on the ground in Daytona from the perspective of a bird. However, Lindsey did not get to enjoy the view very long

because she had to put on foggles to conduct her instrument training.

We were in the air for approximately 2 hours, and it was fascinating to watch Lindsey skillfully fly the plane looking only at her instruments panel, which is something I would be very nervous to attempt. Also what baffled me was listening to the Air Traffic Controllers (ATC) on the radio, and somehow Lindsey and her instructor remembered everything and exceuted the instructions effectively.

Finally, as the flight drew to a close, Lindsey took off her foggles and came in for a landing, which I must admit was much smoother than some of the ones I have experienced flying with the airlines. I would encourage that all students here at Embry-Riddle go on an observation flight at least once because it allows you to view things from a unique perspective and gain an appreciation of the skill and training required of pilots. So if you know any pilots tap them on the shoulder and tell them “let’s go flying.”

Crew Club: New Season, New President

We’re only a month into the semester, but our team is starting off at a fast pace!

We’ve doubled in size since last semester, and it’s great to see such a large team at practice. Our new members are learning a lot and can’t wait to race in their first regatta.

At the end of this month, our team will be going to its first race of the season. Wish us luck and stay tuned for more news on your Crew Club. In the meantime, meet one of our rowers.

Coming in at 6’7”, Charles-Philipp Blondeau is 260 lbs of rowing machinery! Charles, our newly appointed presi-

dent, completed his Bachelor’s in the Mechanical Engineering program at Embry-Riddle just this past semester. He is now continuing his education here as a graduate student, and we couldn’t be more happy to have him stick around.

You may have seen and heard him around campus (it’s hard to miss the large, loud, Frenchman), but you were probably too intimidated to approach him. You shouldn't be; our biggest rower is also the rower with the biggest heart. He has truly been a gift to our team and to rowing in general. Some of Charles’ favorite activities include flying (yes,

he’s a pilot, too), hosting dinner parties, and building his own furniture. He loves his car and his protein, and he’s also involved in international studies, particularly in Spain! We don’t know what it would be like without Charles around, and we’re not hoping to find out anytime soon. In case you need another reason to meet him, come out and join us for practice this week. It’s not too late to find out more about the crew club and see what we do firsthand. As president, Charles will gladly answer any questions you have for him. EdX offers interactive online courses from the world’s best universities and institutions. Online classes are available from MIT, Harvard, Berkeley, and much more. Subjects include biology, business, chemistry, computer science, economics, finance, electronics, engineering, food and nutrition, history, humanities, law, literature, math, medicine, music, philosophy, physics, science, statistics and more. The best part of all these courses is not who offers it or the content, but that all the courses are accessible for free. Everyone has the opportunity to learn at their own advantage.

EdX is a nonprofit organization created by Harvard and MIT in 2012.

EdX’s leaders and team are devoted to transforming education. Their mission at EdX is to increase access to education and promote lifelong, continuous learning. It hosts online university-level

courses (and now AP courses for high school students) in a wide range of subjects to a worldwide audience at no charge. It is different from other massive open online courses (MOOCS) in that it is a nonprofit and runs on an open source software platform. In other words, it uses a computer software with its source code to provide the copyright holders the rights to study, change and distribute the software to anyone and for any purpose.

Continuous research is conducted on how people use its platform. Edx’s works with its partners to empower research on pedagogy (the profession of teaching). The online environment provides a useful way to conduct experiments on how students learn and how faculty can best teach using a variety of tools and systems. They conduct studies on what motivates students to learn and persist or what helps them retain knowledge.

EdX is constantly launching new courses geared

towards a variety of interests. This past week on Oct. 1, EdX was proud to announce the launch of their 300th course, Signals and Systems: Part 1 which starts Jan. 15, 2015.

This course offers students who have a basic understanding of calculus with a new framework of signals and systems. The concepts offered in the course are also useful to students studying mechanical, chemical, aerospace and other branches of engineering and science.

You can take a course at your own pace, at home or anywhere else. You can either earn a Certificate of Achievement by following all the deadlines or just audit the course and take it at your own leisure. I recommend for everyone to take the demo course before taking an actual course. It is a brief introducation designed to show new students how to successfully take a course on EdX. Go study and have fun while discovering new passions and skills that may change your life.

Growing Pains Of a Global University

Zachary Wilkinson Dir. of External Affairs It amazes me to see the Diversity here in Daytona Beach. In your next academic class, take a look at the filled seats around you. You will see students from many nations, backgrounds, and beliefs. It’s an experience you won’t get anywhere else, as you could learn about cultures far different from your own in just a few conversations a few feet from each other.

This fall’s incoming class was the largest in the history of our University. Over 1,600 new students began their education this fall. Current enrollment stands at nearly 5,600 students. Additionally, ERAU Prescott campus experienced another historic point with its student population topping the 2,000 mark.

Embry-Riddle is growing.

Those of you who compete for parking spots or share a room with a third person know this all too well. It’s understandable to be frustrated with the compact campus. However, with this growth will come a wealth of wonderful opportunities for

students.

Rest assured that your words are being heard, and work is being done behind the scenes to ensure our campus is ready to accept significant growth in the next ten years.

Plans are being made for a new residence hall, equal in size to the Student Village, to be built in the place of McKay. A parking garage is a real possibility in the next two years.

The new Student Union building has an architect, ikon.5, and preparations for that project are beginning this summer with the demolition of the Jack R. Hunt Library. Students who travel on Clyde Morris will see land being prepared on the East and West sides of that road for two new research parks.

One will host a Motorsport Research and Development Center, and another will bring several key Aerospace companies to join our campus. Our Athletics program recently joined the NCAA Division II Sunshine State Conference. With this great opportunity comes new challenges, but also further advancement of our Eagle’s reach in the field of collegiate

sports. A new Athletic Annex building is expected in Spring 2015 to further benefit our Athletics program. These partnerships and expansions will expand the reach of our wings and benefit the Eagle Nation. That includes you, the student. Many great things are on the horizon for our Eagles.

Embry-Riddle strives to be at the forefront of Aerospace technology and advancement. As a result, the university must undergo changes to remain at that peak. We have a great set of administrators who want to move ever forward. During this time of transition, try first to understand the reasons for the changes you see.

Much work has been done in recent years to continue building this great campus and expanding the Undergraduate and Graduate options at this University; the limit is so far beyond the sky.

SGA Academic Commitee Precious Mulbah Member-at-Large The Academic Committee consists of a group of dynamic individuals that meet once a week, striving to improve how students excel academically at ERAU. The goal of the academic committee is to assist the university’s students with their academic pursuits while working to innovate and develop new solutions to aid students in their learning endeavors.

The Academic Committee is always open and willing to adapt to new ideas.

We put students first and that’s what motivates us as a group to come up with

new projects that assists students in the learning process.

Currently, we have several projects lined up and we are very excited to accomplish these goals. A few of our upcoming projects include publishing a list of available tutoring courses, along with their hours, in easily accessible places such as the library and the Student Center.

In addition, we also plan on advertising available places to study, getting more printers available for students, purchasing more library books on reserve for courses that are in demand, and also assisting in the establishment of

a language program that will be available to students that could possibly be counted as an elective course.

Anyone is welcome. If you are interested in being a part of this committee, our meetings are held every Monday in the Endeavor Conference room from 5-6pm. If you are unaware of where the Endeavor Conference Room is, it is located on the second floor of the Student Center, right next to Career Services. Growing Leaders

Every year in every college throughout the nation, from Yale to Harvard, students throughout various campuses elect the best and most dedicated students to lead the student body, represent the school and enhance the quality of student life on campus.

This year, Embry Riddle’s student leaders elected seven new promising leaders to join the ranks of the already accomplished Student Representative Board. They have what it takes to tackle on the challenges and projects of the year and forge the voices,

vision of the student body into reality.

Over 30 students applied to fill the vacancies of the various colleges, but only 10 of them were selected for interviews on Tuesday, Sept. 16 after a meet and greet celebratory event in the SGA student area. The process was exciting as the new promising student leaders took on office on Tuesday Sept. 22 at their first student representative board meeting in the presence and witness of the Chief Justice Kaloki Nabutola, one question remained.

What would they accomplish during their office term as representative to

their respective colleges?

Although they are relatively new to the Student Government Association, they will greatly benefit from the expertise of the advisors, the experience of the elected officials of the student representative board to the SGA, and the advices of past officers who laid the ground work and served the student body with passion and pride.

In essence, the newly elected leaders of the student body will stand on the shoulders of giants at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and serve with purpose and excellence in all they do.

Get to Know your SGA Kaloki Nabutola Chief Justice of The Student Court Masters Student, Mechanical Engineering

Born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya, Kaloki Nabutola has been a student here at Embry-Riddle since Fall 2008. He graduated in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering and is currently working on his Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering. Kaloki has two brothers. One lives in Kenya and is a mechanical engineer/DJ/producer by profession, and the other lives in England and practices accounting. Kaloki’s motivation behind his academic successes and his musical ambition is driven by his mother.Growing up, Kaloki enjoyed playing basketball after finding out that his father played for the Kenya national basketball team.Kaloki loves to be involved on campus. He served the Embry-Riddle community as a Resident Advisor for 2 years and as a Resident Director for 3 years. He has also been involved in the Student Government Association for 3 years and currently serves the students as the Chief Justice of the Student Court.

We all have seen Med Club driving across campus. Ever wondered what they do? I personally worked with the Med Club as a Campus Safety Dispatcher. I hope this article enlightens our campus on another aspect of services provided by the students of Embry-Riddle. I interviewed Med Club President Jonathon Lezman, who is also a College of Aviation Representative of the SGA. Jonathon is a Michigan and National Certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).

Med Club is an all volunteer medial emergency response team. My first question to Jonathon was about how Med Club started on campus. In his reply, he stated that the MED Club started out as ‘Embry-Riddle EMS’ around seven years ago. because there was a growing interest in having an emergency medical response system present on campus to help students/faculty/staff before EVAC or DBFD could arrive. He very proudly stated that the Med Club has a response time average of

under three minutes, so they can get to the patient quickly and establish some level of understanding of what is going on medically before an ambulance arrives.

Next, I asked Jonathon if Med Club works on a daily basis with Campus Safety. Yes, Campus Safety and MED Club work hand-in-hand. To call for medical assistance, you dial the campus dispatch emergency line 386-226-SAFE. As MED Club is dispatched, so is Campus Safety to ensure the safety of medical providers, and they are sometimes the liaisons to MED Club/ dispatch communicating if the medical professionals are busy.

If EVAC support is needed, Campus Safety can call into dispatch to get the ambulance to the scene. The officers also help by navigating the ambulance to the right location efficiently. It sometimes requires two or three campus safety vehicles to escort them.

The Med Club is on duty from noon to midnight. Every shift has an EMT who acts as the Crew Chief. Jonathon’ duty day goes from noon to 6 p.m. He starts out by inspecting the Kubota, the brand of

vehicle the Med club drives, and the equipment. He also calles into dispatch to officially be in service. During down time (when they do not have a call), MED officials mostly hang out in their office in the Tomcat Annex . They respond appropriately to a safety call and once the call is finished, all necessary paperwork is filled out for proper documentation.

So, you may be wondering, what is the Med Club equipped to handle? As explained by Jonathon, the MED Club has the same Basic Life Support equipment that an ambulance would have - multiple defibrillators, plenty of medical grade oxygen, every splinting device on the market, backboards, bleeding and trauma control, and basic airway adjuncts for extreme medical emergencies.

They are trained and equipped in Basic Life Support, which includes everything but intubations, IV therapy, and advanced cardiology like an electrocardiograph (ECG). To my surprise, the MED Club also has equipment to handle neonatal care such as birthing a child and pediatric equipment. The Med Club does not offer transportation, however.

Transport to the hospital is via Campus Safety, EVAC or by yourself. All this talk about what the Med Club can do, really peaked my interest on how I could become an EMT myself. I got some insight from Jonathon, who explained that in order to become an EMT, one must go to an approved school which offers the EMT-Basic course. Testing is through either or both State or National Registry standards.

There is a written and practical segment.After passing, you will receive your license to practice. There are many schools that offer this such as Daytona State College (DSC) and other community colleges or technical schools. Interestingly, Med Club does offer a discounted rate for those interested in EMT courses at DSC. Jonathon got his training at Great Lakes EMS Academy in Grand Rapids, MI. Every semester, the Med Club also offers a course in First Responder Training. I observed their class on Oct 4. The first portion of the class was a lecture on various medical concepts, while in the second portion, students were divided into groups and

taught how to check for vitals and document everything appropriately. The course is $40 and after passing the test, successful students can join the Med Club as Certified First Responders. In this course, students are trained to perform back boarding, medical

and trauma assessments, vitals, bleeding control and much more. If you are interested in becoming an EMT, this course is a great way to assess if this field is for you.For more information on Med Club, you can contact Jonathon Lezman at LezmanJ@my.erau.edu

Embry-Riddle Flies to Mars

The prospect of a human mission to Mars has long stirred excitement in the community.

It could be the most important accomplishment in human history, achieving a level of technology that can establish our species on another planet. Engineers have shown that successfully landing on Mars is possible at least most of the time it has been tried. The next feat for humanity will be to show that we can live and work on Mars and, hopefully, establish a colony.

One bold non-profit organization, Mars One, a Dutch consortium, hopes to establish a human

colony on Mars by 2023.

They will launch several missions to send up supplies and robotically build many of the habitat modules before humans arrive.

Even though the humans that go will never come back, Mars One has received over 200,000 applications from courageous people all over the planet who want to become Martians. Mars One is planning their first unmanned mission to Mars in 2018. They have asked universities all over the world to submit proposals for the one slot they have on this 2018 mission for a worthy experiment. Thirty-six proposals have been submitted, including two from Embry-Riddle. This article is meant to encourage you to become a Mars One member so you can watch all the excitement over the next dozen years as robots build the Martian residence, and so you will vote to make the Mars One

Flies proposal, my proposal, the one selected.

The Mars One Flies experiment will send Drosophila Melanogaster to Mars; the ordinary fruit flies that are so annoying when some of the beautiful fruit you left on your dining room table turns a little old.

These pesky creatures in the home have served humanity for many decades as important resources in the lab, particularly in genetics and biochemistry studies. They only live about 18 days, so the entire life cycle from pupae to old age, can be studied very quickly. The genome of D. melanogaster is well known and many genetic effects are obvious such as wing size, body size and eye color. They have been to space before, aboard the shuttle where NASA demonstrated that they have a similar weakened immune response to microgravity as humans. They reproduce prodigiously too, so getting a colony started and maintained is fairly easy. The reason the Mars One Flies project, should be the one selected is because it will provide information on the most crucial question facing the Mars mission; can earthlings survive radiation that will be encoun-

tered on the journey and on the surface of Mars.

Astronauts could arrive on Mars so impaired that they are unable to take care of themselves. Other scenarios have them not arriving alive at all. The current Martian Rover, Curiosity, discovered that on its 10-month journey to Mars, it received a dose of radiation that NASA considered the maximum lifetime dose for astronauts. The astronauts with this exposure level would be susceptible to a host of radiation diseases including a weakened immune system, impaired kidney and liver systems, joint pains, horrendous sun burns, cancers and death.

The Mars One Flies project seeks to find a food substance that will counter the oxidative damage caused by radiation exposure. Half the flies will be trained to eat one of five anti-oxidants that could save their lives or at least prolong their lives long enough to be useful as explorers of a new world.

One of the compounds tested on the Mars One Flies project was developed by the U.S. Army as an anti-radiation drug for soldiers who are at risk of radiation exposure. The flies will be closely monitored during the

mission, noting their behavior, reproductive changes and environmental conditions. If it is possible for the flies to survive the trip, then humans can be assured they have a reasonable chance of surviving the trip.

The people who visit the Mars One website, www. mars-one.com, can become a member by either making a donation in any amount or by buying something from their store. Members alone can vote for which one of the 36 proposals will go. In a few days, you should receive an email with your login information. If not, contact them by email, send them a copy of your receipt and ask them to expedite your membership (they are a little slow with small donations). Once you can log in, you can vote.

Remember, you need to vote for all the proposals to make the competition fair. For example, if only three people vote for the firecrackers on Mars experiment and they all vote it a five, it will have a perfect score of five. More reasonable minds might give it a 1 because that would bring down the score to something more compatible with the idea. If a thousand people voted four and five for the Mars One Flies project,

it could never compete with the perfect score for the firecrackers on Mars project. I hope you vote five for flies and one for the firecrackers. Most people wouldn’t vote for the firecracker project because it doesn’t make sense or they don’t know anything about it, so the few who do, vote high and it wins. By the way, there is no firecrackers on Mars project but I wanted to give you an example of how voting for all the proposals is important. All the other proposals are interesting and important, but none more so than the Mars One Flies project since it will be the first time we will know if life from earth can survive radiation on the journey to Mars and on the surface of Mars and if the anti-oxidants help. In order to get Mars One Flies into the competition, you will have to vote it high, and unfortunately, you will have to vote the others as low as possible. It’s the way the statistics work. As a member, you can follow along each week with the competition and encourage your friends to vote. All the voting will be over by the end of October so you need to vote much sooner than that. How about today?

The British poet Alexander Pope knew a thing or two about worrying. In fact, his poem ‘Eloisa to Abelard’ was an ode to this very idea. The poem is a seemingly onerous yet beautiful discourse on worrying about unrequited love. His now famous quote, “external sunshine of the spotless mind,” is testament to the fact that an empty mind is one without care or worry. Emptying one’s mind is the last piece of advice I would suggest to the student body of a college campus; however, there is wisdom to the idea that freeing your mind of distractions, questions and concerns actually makes you a more efficient student, learner and achiever.

As we all go into the midterm period of the Fall semester at Embry-Riddle with high goals and aspirations, we all eventually con-

template the inescapable prospect of failure; especially when we overcome challenges in classes, work, or flight training. A positive outcome appears tenuous. Entering the first weeks of school is akin to a dream state. There are lots of opportunities and each one seems manageable and equally attainable. As the fall progresses and work piles up with challenges (becoming ever more demanding), these possibilities and goals are severely diminished.

There is nothing wrong with shooting high and having limitless goals – as Jack Hunt would steadfastly argue – but, clearly defining those goals is a talent that must be practiced.

In essence, we must decide what goals are most important to us while constantly being adaptable to changing environments, conditions and outcomes.

There is a piece of advice that my college commencement speak-

Simply stated, you should get outside of your comfort zone and take risks and challenges even if failure is a highly probable outcome. Why? Because you learn more about yourself when you try and fail than if you attempt and succeed at every task. Don’t worry about the prospect of failure. If success is

constantly your anticipated outcome when you attempt something, you are not really challenging yourself.

Take Embry-Riddle, for example. Everyone here has to overcome financial and educational challenges to complete their degrees here. If you decided not to come here or even just go to another school that was comparatively unchallenging and inexpensive, you would not enjoy the fruits of your labors after graduation and the initiation of your aviation-based career.

Alan Watts, a preeminent British philosopher, had the right explanation of what he called “The Phenomenon of Worry.”

He stated that a worrying mind is one that is “in the grip of vicious circles. Since, worrying takes away your appetite and your sleep; it’s not good for you; but you can’t stop worrying and therefore you get additionally wor-

ried that you are worrying. And then, furthermore because that is quite absurd, and you are mad at yourself because you do it – you are worried because you worry, because you worry… That is a vicious circle.” He goes on to say that when you have a moment of quiet to yourself, “allow your mind to be silent.”

So get off of your cell phones, email, TV, YouTube and social networking (and apparently an app called Snapchat – though, I don’t know what that is) and just have a moment of silence every so often, because even though it may seem uncomfortable to be unoccupied, alone and with nothing to do, remember that our minds are not meant to be thinking all the time (or be worrying). Take a mental vacation once in a while, and just clear your mind of distractions.

You’ll be glad that you did!

7 Aviation Melbourne Puts on a Show

Shemar Alexander Correspondent The Melbourne Air & Space Show took place last weekend at Melbourne International Airport.

Northrop Grumman sponsored the event, and there was a lot to see and a lot to do. Northrop Grumman had their E-2C Hawkeye and their RQ-4 Global Hawk UAV on display.The performers were marvelous and kept the crowd excited and on the edge of their seats. Scott Yoak, an Embry-Riddle alumni, roared his P-51 Mustang model D through the sky. While, Kent Piestch in the Jelly Belly plane flew around with one aileron and landed on a moving UHaul truck.

The Thunderbirds were

the ultimate highlight of the day, as they performed a multitude of hesitation turns and stunts. Thunderbird pilot #12, Major Derrick Lee stated, “My experience with the Thunderbirds is fantastic, I’ve been in the Airforce for 22 years and I’ve been with the Thunderbirds for 12 years”, and “My advice for young people that need direction are, there’s a difference between wanting to do something and working to be something.

Working for what you want to be in the future is more important than saying what you want to be.”

Corallys Plasencia Correspondent Amelia Earhart along with women all around the world would be proud of the legacy Jerrie Mock has left us with . She succeeded at doing something she loved and what her idol Amelia Earhart had died trying to do. With just a corroded and cracked single-engine Cessna 180, Mock sought out to pull off a feat that’s never been accomplished by any “housewife.” Becoming the first woman to fly solo around the world, Jerrie Mock inspired many women to go above and

beyond when it comes to the seemingly impossible. She was known as a “courageous lady who had a dream” and who wanted pilots to go forth with their dreams. On Tuesday, at the age of 88, Mock died peacefully in sleep in her Quincy, Fla. home.

Being cremated under her request, Mock starts her final journey around the world as her ashes are spread across the Gulf of Mexico. The hardworking mother of three took off for her journey on March 19, 1964 from Port Columbus in her 26-foot long Cessna which she called Spirit of Columbus. Being a licensed pilot

for only six years, she overcame many doubts from people who couldn’t imagine a woman could pull of such a daring trip. The 23,000 mile, 29 day trek seemed like an accomplishment hard not to notice. “Other women had attempted this before, including Amelia Earhart. She was an independent person flying alone.

She wasn’t well known in aviation at the time.

It just never caught on”, Dorothy Cochrane, curator at the Air and Space Museum mentions.

She was only seven years old when a short ride in an airplane inspired her to become

a pilot and travel around the world. She would go on to study aeronautical engineering at Ohio State University, and by 1956, she would begin to learn how to fly.

Jerri Mock’s record breaking feat didn’t end with her global journey. Mock would go on to break more than 20 records for speed and distance between 1965 and 1969 as well as flying a jet fighter at more than 1,000 mph. After many years of triumph, Mock finally took her final flight, donated her Cessna and just disappeared from the radar. After much moving around, she finally called

Florida her home in 1992.

April of this year marked the 50th anniversary of her accomplishment that many will continue to go on to remember for ages. Women in aviation today can thank a lady like Jerrie Mock for encouraging female aviators all over the world.

Mock is survived by her daughter Valerie Armentrout, her sister and many great-grandchildren.

The Spirit of Columbus Cessna she used in her journey can be found hanging in the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, VA. as a part of the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum.

Airline Stocks React To US Ebola Case Christian Pezalla ERAU Alumnus The share price of most publically traded airlines in the U.S. dropped Wednesday morning on fears that Ebola would reduce passenger traffic or cause other problems for airlines.

Even before the markets officially opened for trading, prices were down in the pre-trading session (a program that allows some stocks to trade in the early morning). American Airlines, Delta, United, Spirit, Southwest, Alaskan Airlines and JetBlue Airways were all trading lower on Wednesday. Concern over the possible spread of Ebola outside Africa, also sent shares of Dublin based,

Ryanair lower.

The news comes amid growing international concern over the virus, and a slew of flight suspensions.

Oneworld partner British Air, and Dubai based, Emirates Airlines have both suspended flights into regions they consider high risk. Atlanta based, Delta Airlines and Paris based, Air France have also suspended some flights to Western Africa, along with Nairobi based, Kenya Airways.

On Wednesday afternoon, a spokesperson for JetBlue stated that the airline had contacted the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for advice and that the trade group Airlines for America

would be coordinating with the CDC. Shares of the airline hit a low of $10.15 on Wednesday, down from $10.62 on Tuesday evening. JetBlue stock began a recovery on Thursday and closed the week at $11.12.

As of Friday, the single case of Ebola, reported in Texas, was the only confirmed case originating in the U.S.. In a statement on the CDC’s website, the agency confirmed reports of the Texas case, but went to lengths to reassure the public that procedures are in place to handle such cases. Health experts believe that a large scale outbreak is unlikely in the United States, which has better resources than many of the nations with wide-

spread cases.

As airlines stocks fall Wednesday, so did the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the NASDAQ Exchange. Analysts cites global concerns, including Ebola, as major factors in Wednesday’s sell off. Markets across Europe were also taken lower, as investors expressed concerned over Ebola, along with tension in the Middle-East, Russian relations, and a lack of economic growth in Western Europe.

By Friday, much of the Ebola fear had subsided and airline stocks gained substantial ground, also bolstered by a positive ADP Jobs Report released that morning. Aviation related stocks, including

the aircraft leasing firm Aircastle Ltd and internet booking site Expedia. com, also recovered on Friday. Hotel stocks went lower on the Ebola news as well, with Intercontinental Hotels Group Plc (owner of the Holiday Inn Brand) falling 2.6% on Wednesday. As of Friday, the hotel operator had only partially recovered from the news, with shares 4.1% lower on the week.

While investor concern over the Texas Ebola case seems to have started to fade, the risk of another Ebola case could affect stock prices over the next few months as health officials around the world continue to cope with this global outbreak.

Sierra Nevada Chases their Dream...by protesting?

Micah Knight Correspondent Three weeks ago, America’s commercial space industry was boosted when NASA announced that Boeing and SpaceX both won their CCtCap (Commercial Crew Transportation Capability) contract. Boeing’s contract is worth up to $4.2 billion for their CST-100 crew capsule, and SpaceX’s design is worth up to $2.6 billion for their Dragon capsule, both of which will provide NASA transportation to the ISS (International Space Station) by 2017 for their astronauts, instead of relying on Russia and their Soyuz capsules (at over $70 million a seat).

The company Boeing and SpaceX won over was Sierra Nevada and their “Dreamchaser” spaceplane, which looks quite like NASA’s Space Shuttle, but is significantly smaller and designed to be launched on an Atlas V rocket. Two

weeks after NASA’s CCtCap announcement, Sierra Nevada filed a formal protest with the Government Accountability Office (GAO) challenging NASA’s awards. The protest has potential to suspend NASA’s contracts with Boeing and SpaceX for the next 100 days while the GAO reaches a decision.

Sierra Nevada claimed that “NASA’s own Source Selection Statement and debrief indicate that there are serious questions and inconsistencies in the source selection process” in their press release. Sierra Nevada would save NASA $900 million dollars, for a craft that (they claim) would “provide a wider range of capabilities and value including preserving the heritage of the space shuttle program through” a ‘space plane,’ as opposed to the other two proposals’ capsules.

While Sierra Nevada’s claims may have some validity, they are less qualified to

be raising their voice. Sierra Nevada is a respected space technology company, but they primarily create spacecraft components, and have not yet built or tested a spacecraft before their Dreamchaser, which hasn’t undergone a flight test in space.

Boeing is by far the most qualified and respected company for the contract, having a long legacy of spacecraft with NASA and the US military.

Boeing was a contractor to build the Space Shuttle and is the prime contractor for the ISS and SLS (Space Launch System – NASA’s new heavylift rocket). Boeing has built and orbited many satellites, and they also have a joint-venture with Lockheed Martin (the United Launch Alliance), which launches most of the US-launched space missions.

Boeing’s portfolio is massive and impressive.

SpaceX is also an impressive company, but has less of a legacy than Boeing. Over

the last several years they have deigned, tested, and launched their Falcon 9 rockets and their reusable Dragon Capsule, which was flight-tested twice before NASA signed a contract with them for 12 ISS cargo transport missions, 3 of which have already been successfully completed, and one (with a living, animal payload) in progress.

Sierra Nevada’s spaceplane is essentially a mini Space Shuttle, with a purpose of carrying only crew, not the huge payloads the Shuttle delivered to orbit. It is designed to be reusable, and the plane design makes it’s re-entry only 1.5 G’s, compared to 3.5+ G’s for space capsules.

All three spacecraft proposed to NASA for the CCtCap are similar in functionality and objectives, and all had similar mission suitability scores.

Boeing maxed the possible scoring, and it is fair for NASA to go with the proven quality and reliability that SpaceX

and Boeing have demonstrated with past missions at an extra cost, rather than taking a gamble on a company taking a shot at designing and building a spacecraft for the first time.

Sierra Nevada should accept that they have been out-performed and search for opportunities elsewhere, rather than hold up the progress of the commercial space industry with a protest.

Sierra Nevada cut jobs following NASA’s announcement, but also announced they are designing a smaller version of the Dream Chaser launch system to be launched at a high altitude from a carrier plane.

The issue will be resolved by the beginning of next year, as the GAO must reach a conclusion within 100 days. Despite the delay Sierra Nevada’s protest has created, the commercial space industry will move on, continuing to make it cheaper and easier for man to push up and out into the stars.

DARPA Continues Developing NASA Launches Mars Space Plane Lander Design Challenge Corallys Plasencia Correspondent The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is looking into creating a reusable unmanned space plane known as XS-1.

With the government and industry trying to figure out how to commercialize the vehicle, studies have been developed for the effort with the help from the Space Frontier Foundation, a space advocacy organization. DARPA started work along with a combination of companies for its first phase of development of the experimental space plane.

They work with companies such as Boeing, which works with Blue Origin, Masten Space Systems who work with XCOR Aerospace, and Northrop Grumman Corporation who is working with Virgin Galactic. “We chose performers who could prudently integrate existing and up-and-coming technologies

and operations, while making XS-1 as reliable, easyto-use and cost-effective as possible,” said Jess Sponable, DARPA program manager, in a presentation at a Sept.

16 meeting of the Federal Aviation Administration’s Commercial Space Transportation Advisory Committee (COMSTAC). “We’re eager to see how their initial designs envision making spaceflight commonplace — along with all the potential military, civilian and commercial benefits that such a capability would provide.”

DARPA’s main goal is to provide aircraft-like access to space for deployment of small satellite crafts and make technology for next-generation vehicles. Sponable feels there will be high demand for the XS-1 from the industry and the government depending on the low launch costs and high flight rates.

“If we could really introduce this affordable lowcost launch capability, you’re

going to see people introduce next-generation broadband systems,”. Mentioned in universaltoday.com, DARPA envisions that a reusable first stage would fly to hypersonic speeds at a suborbital altitude then it would separate and deploy a satellite into low Earth orbit (LEO). The reusable first stage would then return to earth, land and be prepared for its next flight. There are many goals they hope to reach with the XS-1 including flying about 10 times within 10 days and hoping to reach Mach 10+ at least once. The program wants to reduce the cost of space access to less than $5 million per flight for 3,000to 5,000-pound payloads.

In order to enable the rapid turnarounds per flight, there has to be development for flight and recovery systems that reduce logistical needs. Durable thermal protection systems are needed along with automatic launch before it’s functional.

Cassandra Vella Correspondent To land spacecraft on Mars in the future, NASA has challenged the public to design part of the space craft.

NASA’s Mars Balance Mass Challenge was officially announced on Saturday, Sept.

20, 2014. This challenge will end on November 21, 2014.

The agency will choose and announce the winning design in January of 2015. The winning design will receive a prize of $20,000.

In the 1990’s, humans began their exploration of Mars’ surface with wheeled robots.

Since 2012, NASA’s Curiosity Rover has been roaming the planet collecting data, photographs, and samples. Now, NASA is planning for its future “Marsonauts” to fly manned missions to the Red Planet.

Landing any spacecraft on Mars is a hefty task. The Curiosity rover needed to be perfectly balanced when it was hurtling toward the Red Planet in 2012. When it entered the Martian Atmosphere, the craft ejected two 154-pound weights to disrupt the spacecraft’s balance in order to slow the craft as it hurtled through the Martian Atmosphere.

Right before it landed, the spacecraft released six other 55-pound weights to rebalance the craft for a safe landing.

NASA is challenging the public to design balancing weights that are up to 330-pounds to help keep the spacecraft balanced, and to double as scientific instruments to collect data and take

measurements of Mars.

Perfecting spacecraft landings on Mars is a huge accomplishment in itself, but to land humans at Mars for settlement is a whole new challenge. Scientists need to know more about the planet’s weather patterns, the amount of solar radiation its weak magnetic field lets in, what resources are available and how astronauts could best utilize them.

Scientists are also developing laser technology for communication. Lasers transfer data and information much faster than radio waves. Laser communication could greatly improve connection between Earth and Mars. NASA is working alongside other commercial spaceflight companies to design lighter rockets that may be capable of carrying heavier payloads. If humans were to take up long-term settlements on Mars, they would need the extra payload to carry supplies to set up a colony.

NASA held an exhibit in the World Faire Maker that included information on the many other ways that citizens and the public get themselves involved with the agency’s missions. The exhibit included information on how to launch miniature satellites, called CubeSats, into space and how to participate in the Asteroid Grand Challenge. vs Embry-Riddle: 6 Alison Smalling Sports Information Director DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The fourth-ranked Embry-Riddle women’s soccer team celebrated a program milestone on Thursday evening as their 6-0 defeat of Sun Conference foe Ave Maria (3-4, 0-3) marked the program’s 200th win. The victory improved the Eagles’ overall record to 8-1 and they remain unbeaten in league play at 3-0.

“It’s a great accomplishment for our program to get 200 wins tonight,” ERAU Head Coach Samantha Bohon said. “I’d like to give credit to Dan Blank, the coach prior to me, for starting this program and getting it going in the right direction. I also want to extend a thank you to all of the players who have worn an Embry-Riddle uniform over the years. This night is just as much about them; we’re celebrating their accomplishments as well.

The Eagles controlled the possession for most of the opening frame, but struggled with ball control and passing in the final third. A flurry of activity led to three consecutive Eagle shots with 18 minutes left in the half, but the Eagles were still unable to find the back of the net.

The Eagles finally ended the stalemate in the 34th minute when Dana Robins whipped a cross in from the left to Isabelle Haaranen who hit a half volley into the upper netting for her seventh goal of the year and a 1-0 Eagle lead.

The Eagles’ second goal came just under seven minutes later, this time coming out of a play worked down the right flank. Annie Gelnaw outpaced her marker and sent a cross into the box. The ball went off Kayla Merkel on the far post and fell to Julia Karlernas who netted her third goal of the year to put the Eagles up 2-0.

The start of the second half mirrored the first as the Eagles continued to keep the Gyrenes pinned in their own half, but ERAU’s unrelenting pressure did not yield a goal until the 70:51 mark.

Merkel was involved in the play once again, but this time she was the goal scorer as she

finished Emmie Johansson’s cross to put the Blue and Gold up 3-0.

Six minutes later, Hanna Rolfsen recorded the first goal of her Embry-Riddle career. The freshman defender saw an opening and raced through heart of the AMU defense, dribbled around the Gyrenes’ last defender and slotted a low shot past AMU goalkeeper Francesca Singleton to extend the advantage to 4-0.

The next two Eagle goals came in quick succession as Nina Joergensen finished a Robins corner at the 81:27 mark and Haaranen netted her second goal of night top cap the scoring courtesy of a feed from Kristin Sverrisdottir less than two minutes seconds later.

“I thought we played better in the second half

than we did in the first,” Bohon observed. “It’s great to get six on the board and, most importantly, we really focused on making sure we were tight defensively.

To allow no shots compared to 30 for our team is pretty satisfying.

“I thought there was some really good play by some of our newcomers and I’d especially like to recognize Hanna who scored her first college goal coming out of the back. We continue to keep growing as a team. This was a nice team win and I hope we can do a little bit better for 90 minutes when we come out on Saturday against Southeastern.”

The Eagles will be back on the pitch at 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 4 when they host Southeastern in another Sun Conference matchup.

"Gold" race consisted of NAIA, NJCAA, and club teams. The Eagles bested five other teams ranked in the NAIA Men's Cross Country Coaches' Top 25 Poll in the men's "Gold" race, including No. 5 British Columbia, and No. 11 Lewis-Clark State.

"It was an exciting day for the guys", said Embry-Riddle head coach Mike Rosolino. "It was good to compete against some of the best teams in the country and see where we stand."

The Blue and Gold had three harriers finish in the top ten individually: Alec Hernandez (24:42.69), Paul McKenna (24:59:00), and Andrew Carpenter (25:20.31).

Keneth J Pineiro-Collazo (25:33.04) and Vincent Bett(25:50.81) rounded out the Eagle scorers.

Hernandez, McKenna, Carpenter, and Pineiro-Collazo all set personal records with their times on Saturday.

The Eagles' other competitors included Matt

Graves (26:04.58), Ryan Larson (26:15.40), Jacob Dordick(26:38.73), and Jamin Mays (27:31.68).

ERAU scored 61 points to lock up the top spot in the team standings. British Columbia (69), Lewis-Clark (71), Eastern Oregon (89), and the UO Running Club (161) made up the rest of the top five.

The Eagles will return to action next weekend when they travel upstate to Tallahassee to compete in the Florida State Invitational on Oct. 11.

Alison Smalling Sports Information Director The fourth-ranked Embry-Riddle women’s soccer team did all of its scoring in the first half and that was enough for a 3-0 win over Southeastern in Sun Conference play, Saturday at the Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium. The Eagles got three goals from three different players and that balanced scoring helped the Blue and Gold improve to 9-1 overall and 4-0 in league play.

The Eagles had the better of the offense for the majority of the contest, outshooting the Fire 22-3 and not allowing the visi-

tors a single corner kick.

Three minutes after coming into the game as a substitute, Andrea Froshaug collected the ball and dribbled through the heart of the Southeastern defense.

Despite being crowded out by three Fire defenders, she managed to flick the ball to Annie Gelnaw and the freshman turned and fired home her fifth goal of the season for the first goal of the day in the 25th minute.

Froshaug was instrumental in the Eagles’ second goal as she was brought down inside the penalty area in the 42nd minute after another dangerous run down the right side.

buried the resulting free kick to extend the Eagle advantage to 2-0.

With under a minute left in the frame, Isabelle Haaranen played a deft pass through to Kayla Merkel making the diagonal run and Merkel beat Southeastern goalkeeper Jessica McClernan to the lower right corner to give the Blue and Gold a 3-0 cushion heading into the halftime break.

The start of the second half saw the Eagles continue to dominate the possession, but as the frame progressed the play became less crisp and that allowed the Fire to make a few seeking runs of their own.

Southeastern had a chance to pull one back midway through the second half, but Ali Heath’s shot bounced off the upper right corner of the frame and in her attempt at a follow-up, which was stopped by Lynch, Samantha Pifer was judged to be in an offside position.

Overall, Lynch was called on to make two saves for the Eagles, while her Southeastern counterpart, McClernan, collected three saves for the Fire who fall to 4-5 overall and 1-3 in the conference.

Eagles Finish 12th at Charles Bowles Invitational Robert J Lopez ERAU Athletics The Embry-Riddle women's Cross Country team finished 12th at the 40th Annual Charles Bowles Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

The meet, which was hosted be NCAA III Willamette University, was separated into two divisions; the "Cardinal" race was made up of NCAA I, II, and III programs, while the "Gold" race consisted of NAIA, NJCAA, and club teams.

The Eagles were one of eight NAIA programs competing in the event, five of which were ranked (No. 1 British Columbia, No. 4 Northwest Christian,

No. 11 Lewis-Clark State, No. 21 Oregon Tech, No. 23 Texas Wesleyan).

"It was a little disappointing on the women's side, but the effort was still good," said Embry-Riddle head coachMike Rosolino.

"It was tough competition but it was good to compete against some of the best teams in the country."

Freshman Alex Orr was once again the Eagles top finisher, placing 41st overall with a time of 19:11.71. The other scorers for the Blue and Gold were Aleiyah Ross (20:08.29), Marina LeVine (20:12.36), Rebecca Love(20:39.37), and Martina Tafoya (20:46.95).

Top ranked British Columbia won the race,

scoring 47 points, while Northwest Christian (63), Lewis-Clark (70), Oregon

Tech (137), and Concordia (Ore.) (176) rounded the top five team scores.
