PVR Strongly Refutes Allegations Made in Recent Media Reports PVR Ltd., India's largest film exhibitor has apparently been named in a complaint filed before the Competition Commission of India (CCI). As on date, the information available with the company is wholly speculative and based mainly upon media reports and an interview which was given by the sole complainant to a news channel. Given the slanderous and malicious nature of the allegations, the company must place on record that it strongly refutes and denies the allegations that have featured in various media reports in the last few

days. PVR operates within the prevailing laws and the regulatory framework of the country and is in full compliance of the same. The assertions made in various media reports and in the interview to a news channel, alleging cartel conduct or conduct which is not in the best interest of cinema-goers, are false and aimed at tarnishing the image of PVR and its management. Regardless of the malicious intent of these allegations, the company will pursue its normal course of action and will respond to all queries, received from the relevant authorities, as and when asked to do so. The business of film making as well as film exhibition, have evolved in our country over the years and continue to be on a rapid growth trajectory. Rajinikanth Starrer 'Darbar' Slated For Pongal 2020: First Look Unveiled!

The first look of superstar Rajinikanth's next film titled 'Darbar' was released with the poster indicating that the AR Murugadoss directed flick could be a cop film. The poster carried a catchy punchline "you decide whether you want me to be good, bad or worse," and was splashed with paraphernalia attached to the police, including an IPS shoulder pin, a handcuff, a couple of guns and a police dog. Besides, it features a spectacled and bearded Rajinikanth. The first look also carried what seemed to be the Gateway of India in Mumbai, hinting that the story might be based in the western metropolis. Murugadoss' earlier action flick 'Thuppakki', starring top actor Vijay was based in Mumbai. This is the first tie-up between Rajinikanth and Murugadoss, whose last venture 'Sarkar' with Vijay in the lead had kicked up a row over the depiction of the ruling AIADMK's freebie schemes in an alleged bad light. Anirudh is scoring the music for the film, his successive outing with the superstar after the hit 'Petta,' whose songs went on to become chartbusters. Nayantara is playing the leading lady in the film, which is produced by Lyca Productions. ‘Darbar’ would hit the screens for Pongal (January) 2020.

HC Allows Input Tax Credit under GST to Realtor Making Malls

The Orissa High Court has resolved an important issue of blocked credit under the goods and services tax (GST) regime for real estate companies constructing commercial spaces for the purpose of letting it on rent or lease. The court has allowed input tax credit to a shopping mall construction company. Meanwhile, real estate companies moved Delhi High Court over a similar issue. The issue resolves around Section 17 (5) (c) and (d) of the CGST Act and similar sections under the respective state GST laws. The sections disallow input tax credit for goods and services used to build immovable property on own account. One of the interpretations was that since property given on rent or lease is owned by owners and not by a tenant or lessee, input tax credit should not be given. This interpretation was there despite the fact that GST is imposed on rent and lease. A petitioner, Safari Retreats Ltd, which is in the business of constructing shopping malls, has moved Orissa High Court challenging the tax authorities to deny it the input tax credit on construction of an immovable property which would be given on rent. The court said, "If the assessee is required to pay GST on the rental income arising out of the

investment on which he has paid GST, it is required to have the input tax credit on GST. "Meanwhile, real estate companies have petitioned the Delhi High Court to strike down the provisions of Section 17 (5) (c) and (d) of the CGST Act and similar provisions in the Delhi GST Act. The high court on Monday issued notices to the Union government, the GST Council and the Delhi government. Abhishek Rastogi, counsel for petitioners in Delhi High Court and partner at Khaitan & Co, said while the objective of the GST is seamless flow of credits, the section is against the very spirit of the GST and has accordingly been challenged. "The entire controversy resolves around the phrase 'on own account' and the rules of interpretation will come into play before deciding whether real estate players will be eligible to claim input tax credit," Rastogi said. Abhishek Jain, partner EY, said the larger outlook to the concept of input tax credit by the Orissa HC would be quite appreciative and beneficial for businesses. However, there is postive tax cost arbitrage for properties obtained on rent vis-a-vis those owned and constructed by businesses. Input tax credit is denied in case of the latter as there is no GST on the output side.

The system includes six JBL AM 7315 screen array loudspeakers, four JBL 9300 cinema surround loudspeakers, eighteen JBL 9350 + four JBL SCS 12 high impact cinema surround loudspeakers, six JBL AC28/26 used as underfills for the balcony area and six JBL 5628 dual 18" cinema subwoofers. At the inauguration, HARMAN global ambassador and award winning musician & composer AR Rahman said, "With Samsung's ground-breaking Onyx Cinema LED Screen technology and HARMAN's iconic JBL audio, moviegoers in Bengaluru will immensely enjoy their experience at the theatre. I have worked with HARMAN and used JBL

There was an issue of height for placement of screen LCR on top of LED screen. The screen height was raised to maintain the line of sight from rear of stall & balcony. As a result there was a very little space available for installing the Onyx main LCR Speakers. We had to look for the adequate size of speakers with the same specification of main LCR speakers and thus installed sound speaker JBL AM7315 which was a perfect choice for the application.

Looking at the LED Screen to the balcony rear distance, we decided to install balcony LCR for coverage in rear of balcony. Again JBL AM 7315 was an appropriate choice for balcony secondary LCR. But installing balcony LCR was a challenge, as the mounting space was available only on the ceiling in front of the balcony. Looking at the service point of view for flying LCR, we decided to go for the Motorized Chain Hoist for each speaker. So the LCR speakers can be brought down by simple control for servicing.

For LCR coverage under balcony area, we had installed LCR fills under balcony using JBL AC28 speakers. With a limitation of space due to the revised size of the screen frame, there was no place to mount subwoofers on the floor under the screen. Thus, subwoofers were relocated on the sides of the screen, i.e, 3 nos. subwoofer stack on the left side of the screen and other subwoofer stack on the right hand side of the screen." –

Professional systems for many years, and I can confidently say that they truly do justice to the music I create. There is no sound like JBL sound, so it makes sense that the brand is powering this amazing new way to enjoy movies and music."

Samir Mistry Sr. Application Engineer - Cinema Harman Professional India

Apart from the new Onyx Cinema LED screen, Swagath Onyx Theatre in Bengaluru has also upgraded its overall look and feel inside the theatre with refurbished interiors and comfortable seats, even as it retains its heritage look on the outside.

• INDIA PLEXING • The Beginning Suchitra and Prabhat of Mangalore are the oldest theatres, located on K S Rao Road. Prabhat Theatre, the brainchild of Sri. B K Vasudeva Rao, was built during 1958 in an area of 44000 sq. feet; screening the Dev Anand film "Kaalapani" for its inaugural with an admission rate of two annas. The entire area was then taken over during September 1970 by Sri. D N Gopalakrishna, managing partner M/s Lakshminarayana Enterprises, Bangalore. Suchitra Theatre took shape in the same premises, adjacent to the Prabhat Theatre during 1976 with the initiation of Sri. D N Goplakrishna, by screening Dr. Rajkumar's movie "Bahaddur Gandu". Both the theatres have come into existence as single screen theatres. Since then, both the theatres have turned famous by screening many hit movies of different languages like Anand (Hindi), Sholay (Hindi), Bobby (Hindi), Nanjundi Kalyana (Kannada), Shankar Guru (Kannada), Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (Hindi), Dil Toh Pagal Hai (Hindi), Rangeela (Hindi), Bombay (Hindi), Kadalan (Tamil), Maro Charitra (Telugu), Appu (Kannada) etc., These theatres have also been credited for showing the first ever Morning Show in Mangalore city. "We at SP Cinemas have great passion towards film exhibition. With a vision to retain old glory, these single-screens were renovated with renowned state-of-the-art systems, equipments and technology. When there are releases of big budget movies, single-screen theatres have edge over multiplex in terms of number of footfalls receiving more audience in the first week itself." says Prashant.

• INDIA PLEXING • What has been the main challenge faced? With malls and multiplexes coming into existence for cinema exhibition, the audience are more inclined towards multiplexes, thereby the number decreasing for single screens. Secondly, the competition with exhibitors who wish to screen sundry movies in their screens and last but not the least, the screening of same movie in many screens in the same locality / city have the major challenges faced. How has the response been post the steadfast renovation worked upon the theatres? Over a period these single-screens have been out dated in terms of technology and comfort. The renovation has taken care of these two aspects. Since the decline of demand for the single-screens by the audience has started long back, the recouping of the theatres will take

some time. However we are seeing the increasing audience after the renovation. Any future plans? We would continue the existing standard with thorough and regular maintenance and upgrade projection, sound system and other equipments on timely basis as and when upgraded in the market.

Cinema Ticketing Kiosks in Single-screen & Multiplexes The Cinema Ticketing Kiosks is a new way to dispense movie tickets more efficiently, saving costs, time, and resources through state-of-the-art technology. Cinema Ticketing Kiosks are the preferred methods of ticket ordering, pickup, and medium of payment for many moviegoers who want to control the processor skip the line because they may be running short on time, or they simply wouldn't want to wait in the line. A self-service kiosk serves a very specific purpose, so make sure it's equipped with the apt features that could bring great convenience to the patrons so as to enjoy their moviegoing experience. Having been instrumental ininnovating, pioneering, designing manufacturing & deploying some of the innovative cinema theatres' kiosks for our customers in India and globally, it has made clear statements for a strong need for self-service kiosks especially in single and 2 screen theatres based in 2 and 3 tier cities of India. This journey started with M/S ABCL cinema trailers kiosks many years back and recently deploying self-service cinema ticketing kiosks for various cinema chains in India & globally. According to the market research data, there are approximately 8000 single-screens & 3000 multiplexes in India with a per capita of around 8 Million and the total gross billing of 156 INR Billions approximately until 2017/18. The research shows that

given a choice, consumers mostly prefer the 'Do-it-Yourself' route. A market study too showed that among 100 people, 89% of them were surveyed for would "sometimes" or "always" choose a self-service kiosk over a cinema ticketing counter option. Some of the famous cinema chains operating in India are PVR, Inox, Carnivals, , Miraj cinemas , Eylex cinemas, Movie Time Cinemas, Mukta A2 Cinemas, PVS Film City, Shanti Theatres, SPI Cinemas, SRS Cinemas, UFO Moviez, Real Image , Silver Screens, Recept, Mangla, West end, Maxus Cinemas, Gold Cinemas to name a few. Twoscreen movie theatres are becoming popular in smaller cities and towns where large multiplexes are not economically viable. Today's PE firms & investors are investing in smaller

markets where there is a dearth of good theatres in these cities. Considering the problem faced with Indian moviegoers in smaller towns and cities in India, one of the major problems presently dealt is the facility of cinema ticketing. As there are large queues and uncertainty of the availability of new movies dates even today. Smaller towns have witnessed less usage of smartphone's and their apps display differential pricing information to customers for movies and Show timings that traditionally have low occupancy rates on weekdays and also with the removal of the app's online convenience charges when booking tickets online have become considerably expensive for customers of all B & C cities. Thus, it is very

• INDIA PLEXING • important to understand the financial revenue generation for cinema theatres and multiplexes with regards to where the money comes from to make it profitable. While watching a movie, innumerable products and brand advertisements appear on the screen at the start and interval timings. Trailers of upcoming movies established are being showcased in the movie. Apart from this, the food and beverages that are ordered during the interval is also an added source of revenue for the multiplexes. Besides this expansion of the F&B menu, there is a huge deployment of the latest technology to ease the buying process, introducing self-service cinema tickets for booking upcoming movies tickets as well. Advertisements contribute 8% to 12% of the revenue of multiplexes. This includes in-cinema advertising and other promotional activities as well. In the cinema, advertising means the advertisements shown to us during the screening of the movie. With the advent of digitization, the advertisers can target their audience on the basis of geography, linguistics and social statuses. Other promotional activities such as various kiosks or placards set in the multiplex premises also account for advertising revenue. Here are two pictorials of leading cinema chains PVR & INOX and how their revenues are generated

Cinema Ticketing Kiosks and its Benefits: The cinema ticketing kiosks is a new way to dispense movie tickets more efficiently, saving costs, time, and resources through state-of-the-art technology. The cinema ticketing kiosks can also be extremely versatile. It can be configured for a variety of floor, through the wall, countertop and wall-mounted as per the needs to accommodate numerous peripherals for customization, and can feature latest technology like NFC, QR, RFID, Magnetic, a wireless

capability that enables easier, less costly, and more flexible installations, etc. A mix from 7 inches" to 55" screen sizes can be made available with kiosks compliances like ADA compliant UL standards in place.

The Problem Faced by Cinema Exhibitors today: Most of the single-screens and two screens are looking for an innovative solution for the long queues at its counters and to simplify the process of ticket buying. They would also want to show trailers to customers to help them make a choice among films and the increased footfalls. As per research X gen, people prefer to use cinema ticketing kiosks rather wait in long queues. The cinema customers can even order F&B snacks at the time of booking the tickets itself. The cinema chains today globally are even deploying kiosks outside the cinema theatres for larger footfalls. These kiosks can be deployed at the entrance of the shopping malls, food courts, and parking lots, of petrol pumps, key public places, restaurants, and hotels. Self Service kiosks brings additional benefits like reduction of counter staff, operational 24x7 operations, scalable, can be kept and moved around wherever one needs to place

it, low maintenance and a great source of generating revenue. Now some high-end multiplexes have cinema virtual lounges that provide the mix of immersive and interactive virtual reality (VR) content to moviegoers. These lounges have VR pods with high-resolution screens, Head Mounted Displays (HMDs) connected to the top-notch OMEN computers. One can experience trailers, videos, games etc. through these. The lounge would offer shorter films with less than 10-minutes of duration. As of now, there are eight contents of which five are purely immersive videos and three are interactive games. Cinema Ticketing kiosks are the preferred methods of ticket ordering, pickup, and medium of payment for many moviegoers who want to control the processor skip the line because they may be running short on time, or they simply wouldn't want to wait in the line. Ordering snacks and drinks at the kiosk is a great way to generate additional sales, as people have little extra time to peruse the menu at their own pace. A self-service kiosk serves a very specific purpose, so make sure it's equipped with the apt features that could bring great convenience to the patrons so as to enjoy their moviegoing experience.
