Happy New Year and welcome to our 50th anniversary season and what a busy one it is! I am delighted to present a particularly special selection of work to mark this important year. It was 50 years ago that the good people of Bury St Edmunds raised enough money to bring the Theatre Royal back into operation and it seems fitting that we celebrate this throughout 2015, kindly supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund of the National Lottery. This will include a brand new play to mark this occasion in July. I also want to thank you for your support over the past year. I have really loved getting to know the region and getting to grips with what we needed to do to make the Theatre Royal a success and a vibrant part of its community. We have made important changes to our programme, improved the comfort of all the seating in the Pit and bought new booster seats for young children, helping to make the experience of visiting Theatre Royal a truly enjoyable one. There’s more to do but we are moving forward. We lose our Arts Council funding in April so we still have challenging times ahead. We are, however, fortunate to have growing audience numbers and great support from individuals and the local business community. Gross & Co, this season’s sponsors, are a vital part of this success. I would also like to acknowledge the continued support from Suffolk County and St Edmundsbury Borough Councils and their commitment to Theatre Royal.

Theatre Royal is leading the development of a new East Anglian Arts Festival especially for schools, children and families. Recapture the sounds of a bygone era as the Nick Ross Orchestra presents ‘an unmissable evening of music and song’ – the classic Big Band sound of the 1940s.

So when his parents are kidnapped, he sets off on a rescue mission – with a little help from a floating circus and its pride of performing lions. Award-winning company Complicite comes to the Theatre Royal with a revival of its first ever show for families and young people.

With a full line-up of saxophones, trumpets, trombones, a rhythm section and top singers, The Nick Ross Orchestra will faithfully recreate the wonderful sounds of such Big Bands as those led by Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Harry James and Tommy Dorsey.

The Business of Murder enjoyed a successful 9-year run in the West End. Starring Robert Gwilym, known by millions for his role as Dr Max Gallagher in Casualty, alongside Paul Opacic (a regular as Steve Marchant in Emmerdale, Mark Waddle in Bad Girls and Carl Costello in Hollyoaks), and Joanna Higson, who played Maxine Donnelly for two series of Shameless and is currently appearing as Vicky Hall in BBC TV’s WPC56.

Iolo Williams (BBC 2’s SpringWatch & AutumnWatch) takes us on a wildlife tour of his Welsh homeland from mountain tops to seashore. On the way we meet the disco-dancing black grouse, the Lamborghini of the bird world, Britain’s largest spider and a sex-changing fish. Iolo is Wales’ bestknown naturalist and his witty, enthusiastic and friendly style is sure to please budding naturalists of all ages.

American Grammy-nominated singer, Stacey Kent, brings her album The Changing Lights as part of a very limited number of 2015 UK concert dates.

The Changing Lights places Kent’s love for Brazilian music centre-stage, featuring Bossa Nova classics like How Insensitive alongside originals by the songwriting team of Jim Tomlinson and acclaimed novelist, Kazuo Ishiguro. Stacey’s repertoire and audience have expanded with every album. Her platinum-selling album Breakfast On the Morning Tram (Blue Note, EMI 2007) was nominated for a Grammy Award. One of Ayckbourn’s best loved plays, A Chorus of Disapproval tells the tale of what happens when a dashing young new arrival in town joins the local operatic society for their latest show, The Beggar’s Opera. As with many plays by this much-loved playwright, things get complicated off-stage as the lives of a series of stock characters become intertwined, with hilarious consequences.

EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY PROJECTS

Theatre Royal Education and Community Projects Community and Education Throughout the year, the Theatre Royal works with a wide range of people across our region. Whatever your age or experience, we offer an exciting, professionally-led range of projects that improve skills, develop confidence and generally bring you into contact with other like-minded people. Over the coming months there will be regular updates and it is worth registering with our team for more information, keep an eye on our website www.theatreroyal.org/get-involved

Schools and colleges We offer schools and colleges a wide range of activities that support the curriculum and increase children and young people’s opportunities to creatively engage with the range of work on our stage. We are very excited to announce that we have developed a formal partnership with West Suffolk College to create opportunities for students to work alongside Theatre Royal staff and the artists on stage. We run a termly Teachers’ Forum, offering teachers a chance to get together, find out more about the opportunities on offer, share good practice and inform what we programme at the Theatre Royal. We are also offering schools a range of Creative Response Projects, Page to Stage activities, Work Experience and bespoke programmes running alongside our productions. With productions such as Sign of the Times and Lionboy we are offering on-stage workshops, online resources and interactive school projects. There will be many opportunities for schools to be involved in our summer Children’s Festival. If you would like to receive

Community Projects We have a wide range of projects and activities for young people and the community to get involved in. The programme is very varied and includes performance based projects, skills workshops and creative opportunities for groups. In the past these have included work with people with special needs, young offenders, teenage parents, and older people. We are currently working on a production of Our Country’s Good with young people aged 16 – 21 years and we will be embarking on a new project with the community which will explore the story of the Theatre Royal’s reopening in 1965 as part of the 50th anniversary programme. We have recruited our current cohort of Young Associates who are busy working on a variety of projects throughout the year, as are the seven Theatre Royal Youth Theatre groups.

Throughout the Summer we will be recruiting a number of young adults for our ‘Young Associates’ programme and through the autumn we will continue to develop Theatre Royal’s Youth Theatre. The Discover programme (see page 26) also offers a range of talks and discussions for audience members to support their enjoyment and connection to the work on our stage. The Creative Learning programme is supported by The Rural Youth Trust, Heritage Lottery Fund, The Alfred Williams Charitable Trust, The St Edmunds Trust, The Foyle Foundation. Greene King’s staff car park, off Cullum Road, is just 200 metres walk from the back of the Theatre and is available for weekday evening and all weekend performances. The cost is £2, payable on entry. A well-lit footpath leads from the car park to the back of the Greene Room. While we regret there is no access for customers in wheelchairs to the Greene Room via this footpath, the front entrance to the Theatre Royal is completely wheelchair accessible.

The Theatre Royal is an historic horseshoe-shaped Georgian auditorium – if you are unfamiliar with sightlines please talk to our Box Office staff or enjoy a guided tour.
