SPRING SEASON Welcome to Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds new season brochure for 2017 and I am delighted to offer some of the very best Theatre, Music, Comedy and Dance on our iconic stage. The season opens with professional work Made in Bury St Edmunds. I shall be directing a wonderful cast in Jane Austenâ€™s classic, Northanger Abbey, which will premiere at Theatre Royal before embarking on a national tour. We have a number of opportunities to see new plays throughout the spring with rehearsed reading of The Wisdom Club by Associate Artist, Danusia Iwaszko to look out for, Jim Cartwrights new play, Stand Up Stand Up and Just an Ordinary Lawyer by

I am delighted to continue our relationship with the acclaimed London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts who will tour restoration comedy, Bury Fair and Shakespeareâ€™s As You Like It, alongside the wonderful Northern Broadsides production of Cyrano.

Our work for families continues with Alice in Wonderland, Stig of the Dump, The Light Princess and Once Upon a Festival should be bigger and better than ever. Theatre Royal might have a tiny fraction of the funding of theatres in our region but the continued support from our local councils, businesses, individuals and of course you as audience members all say loud and clear that Theatre Royal is very much alive and an important part of the life of this region.

There’s a quote “It’s not true that people stop pursuing dreams because they grow old, they grow old because they stop pursuing dreams.” People keep asking her what she wants, she’s never been asked what she wants so she doesn’t know how to answer this. Jane Austen sits writing, her quill scurrying across the vellum. She is dreaming up Darcy, a proud, lip curling, handsome creation in very tight pants. But then a door squeaks, a visitor approaches and Jane hastily hides her work. Now left to his own devices, Darcy embroiders his own storyline whilst his creator stitches her quilt. DRAMA / LONDON CONTEMPORARY THEATRE Aimed at children over four, this is a fast-paced interactive show full of exciting storytelling, fun songs, innovative movement and puppetry and many chances to join in. London Contemporary Theatre brings their innovative Stig of the Dump to Bury St Edmunds following a successful run in the West End. Barney is staying with his grandparents on the chalk Downs of southern England when he falls over the edge of an old chalk pit and tumbles through the roof of a hidden den. When he looks round he sees Stig, a caveman, with shaggy black hair and bright black eyes. The chalk pit is disused and full of people’s dumped rubbish, which Stig uses to make his home. Barney and Stig get on rather well together. They have to manage without language, as Stig speaks no English, but that doesn’t seem to stop them. Stig becomes Barney’s secret friend, not because Barney doesn’t tell anyone, but because no one believes that Stig is real. They have a great time, improving Stig’s den, collecting firewood, going hunting and even catching wild beasts! It is nearly 50 years since Stig and Barney’s adventures first saw the light of day but this timeless children’s classic remains as charming and entertaining as ever.

Many of our visiting companies and in house productions are supplemented with an education resource, workshop or even schematic lesson plans. We offer a bespoke facility to schools, and can work creatively and thoughtfully with you to enrich your curriculum, attain Artsmark, Art Award and other accreditations, or provide meaningful CPD sessions for staff. We also have engaging enrichment programmes for schools, such as The Shakespeare Takeover Programme, Into the Mind Project and Once Upon a Festival, our annual celebration of all that’s great and wonderful in the arts for children. Youth Theatre is the life-blood of a good theatre. At Theatre Royal our purpose is to facilitate workshops for young people run by experienced theatre professionals. Theatre Royal also runs a Young Associate programme for people aged 18+ who are serious about pursuing a career in the arts. Whether it’s acting, directing, writing, marketing, administration, technical or creative learning you can do it here.
