THEATRE ROYAL BURY ST EDMUNDS

Welcome

Spring 2024 Sponsored by

We are proud to be producing the world premiere of acclaimed author Philippa Gregory’s (The Other Boleyn Girl, The White Queen) first play: Richard, My Richard. For this exciting theatrical event, we will transform Theatre Royal into ‘the round’, providing audiences with a unique experience of our beautiful auditorium. As ever, our spring season is jam-packed with great events, but there are one or two I’d like to draw your attention to. Chris Thorpe presents A Family Business, a powerful, poetic and provocative new play about Nuclear Weapons. As the US consider returning nuclear weapons to RAF Lakenheath, I think this is a conversation we should all be a part of.

(no additional charge) to one of the four shows* I’ve mentioned here and join like-minded theatre lovers in the bar for a pre-show chat. We will provide some background to the production, the writer, the company, and the actors, to get you started. The Theatre Club area will be available for you to return to in the interval if you wish and post-show we invite you to continue a peer-led conversation at a reserved table at the Dog & Partridge. Come alone or with a friend. We extend our thanks to our generous season sponsor Ellisons Solicitors, our main sponsor Greene King, and our principal sponsor Jaynic - whose support is so crucial to our theatre.

Mask-theatre company, Vamos Theatre, return for the first time since 2021 with their new production Boy on the Roof about an unlikely friendship between a boy with ADHD and his elderly neighbour. Suffolk poet Luke Wright returns from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival with his five-star show Silver Jubilee; a deeply personal story of adoption which featured in almost every publication’s ‘Pick of the Fringe’. If you love theatre why not try our new Theatre Club? A bit like a Book Club, simply purchase a Theatre Club ticket

RICHARD, MY RICHARD a new play by PHILIPPA GREGORY

directed by KATIE POSNER

A Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds and Shakespeare North Playhouse co-production in association with Daniel Schumann.

With an explosion of tarmac, Leicester City Car park erupts and Richard III crashes from his lost tomb to meet the character who has ruined his reputation: History – the record keeper who doesn’t always have their mind on the task. Richard believes he has risen from the grave to heaven with an unstained conscience, and the awkward task falls to History (sorry History)- to tell the Undead King that all is not as he imagines. As Richard challenges, History admits to doubts. Often revered as the bearer of truth, yet, history’s perspective is skewed. History overlooks people and stories. Best-selling novelist Philippa Gregory’s (The Other Boleyn Girl) Richard, My Richard is a passionate, tender portrait of man in his time, surrounded by the women who determine his fate. Often funny, often poignant, underpinned by the facts of the past, Richard’s secrets may have died with him, here he rises up to tell us the story, his story, History. Performed in-the-round. THU

Like The Woman in Black – but funnier, with fewer people! Adapted and directed by Gavin Robertson and performed by Nicholas Collett. POST-SHOW DISCUSSION WITH KATE HUDSON General Secretary of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament

Presented by China Plate Theatre

A FAMILY BUSINESS A show about how not to blow up the planet. Written and performed by Chris Thorpe, developed with Rachel Chavkin and Lekan Lawal, and directed by Claire O’Reilly We don’t really talk about nuclear weapons much. Even though they accompany us everywhere. Invisible guests in cafés, on the shelves of supermarkets, in line at the cash machine. Guests that could destroy all of that and more in a second.

A Family Business is about diplomats, activists, and a journey to change the world. If these weapons could wipe out all our tomorrows, then why aren’t we all talking about them today?
