SPRING 2022

WELCOME We have a bumper season in store for you, with six months of live performances to excite, inspire and entertain you. Let’s start with our returners: if you enjoyed London Classic Theatre’s brilliant Absurd Person Singular, they are returning with Same Time, Next Year and Boeing Boeing. If you gripped the seat of your chair during Blackeyed Theatre’s excellent The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde, then don’t miss out on their production of Frankenstein. And if you giggled at Stuff and Nonsense’s The Gingerbread Man then get in quick for Pinocchio.

Theatre Royal and New Wolsey Ipswich – a brilliant new comedy, set right here in East Anglia. And Home, I’m Darling, a sparkling comedy (winner of UK Theatre Awards for Best New Play and Olivier Award for Best New Comedy) about sexual politics. These last two productions are special because they are produced by Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds – they are the shows that we make especially for you. They are the plays which make us stand out from other theatres as a proud producing theatre, as we continue to make the very best plays, right here in Suffolk.

Now for our first-timers or those looking for something a little different. If you are feeling murderous, or perhaps fancy yourself as an amateur-sleuth, why not try Ladykiller or Done to Death, By Jove? If you love the thrill of improvisation, where every performance is made specifically for you, then book for Austentatious or Murder She Didn’t Write. If you are a Shakespeare nut then you are in luck! We have As You Like It, and Hamlet - The Comedy. If you are a fan of literary adaptations, we have Lost Dog Dance’s version of Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities and Pilot Theatre’s adaptation of Zana Fraillon’s book about life in an Australian Immigration Detention Centre, The Bone Sparrow. If you like a laugh then we have loads of high-profile comedians like Dylan Moran, Reginald D Hunter and Patrick Kielty; and this season we introduce our very own Theatre Royal Comedy Night with a great line-up of comedians from the UK touring circuit.

Thanks to all of our sponsors, especially our season sponsor Ellisons Solicitors and principal sponsor Jaynic, for supporting us during this crucial period of recovery.

OWEN CALVERT-LYONS Artistic Director

P.S. If three shows in this season catch your eye, why not take a risk on a fourth, in order to activate our Season Saver Discount and get 15% off the lot?

Finally, we have our two home-grown productions. The first is The Birds and The Bees, made in collaboration with Norwich 2 VISIT THEATREROYAL.ORG TO BOOK

FRANKENSTEIN Tue 1 - Sat 5 Feb

‘Beware; for I am fearless, and therefore powerful.’ Geneva. 1816. Victor Frankenstein obsesses in the pursuit of nature’s secret, the elixir of life itself. But nothing can prepare him for what he creates. So begins a gripping life or death adventure, taking him to the ends of the earth and beyond. Don’t miss this thrilling adaptation of Mary Shelley’s gothic horror masterpiece, fusing ensemble storytelling, live music, puppetry, and stunning theatricality. A revival of Blackeyed Theatre’s “masterfully constructed” (The Stage) 2016 production, Frankenstein promises a fresh and exciting take on what is widely considered to be a landmark work of romantic, gothic, and science fiction literature. SAME TIME, NEXT YEAR Tue 15 - Sat 19 Feb

Doris and George meet in 1951, a chance encounter in a Californian hotel that leads to a passionate one-night stand. Both are married to other people but, soon aware this might be the start of something, they promise to meet 12 months later. So begins a romantic love affair that lasts 25 years. The play charts their lives through the ups and downs of parenthood, career highs and lows, as well as the shifting fashions and morals of the passing decades. Bernard Slade paints a bittersweet, nostalgic, and very funny portrait of two likeable protagonists who find themselves in the most unusual of long-term relationships. Age Guidance: 14+ TUE

Sun 13 Feb, 2pm & 7.30pm

From the producers of the UK tours of The Goon Show and Hancock’s Half Hour comes another radio comedy classic live on stage. From 1965 to 1968, there wasn’t a bigger radio programme in Britain than the ground-breaking Round the Horne. For half-an-hour every Sunday afternoon, people would gather to listen to Kenneth Horne and his merry crew get up to all sorts of mischief.

A cast of six bring a comic flurry of suspects and sleuths together to discover whodunit, and how... DEAD GOOD

WHEN THE LONG TRICK’S OVER

Thu 10 Feb, 7.30pm

Wed 2 Mar, 7.30pm

Bob and Bernard don’t have that much in common. But after a chance meeting at their weekly hospice group, they realise they share one ambition - to do some serious living before they die. Dead Good is a funny and poignant theatre show celebrating friendship and the importance of living every precious day to the full. This beautifully crafted production is performed entirely without words. Age Guidance: 12+

‘I’m so scared. And yet...I’m also looking...Just in case I see her...Even though by now, there wouldn’t be that much to see...’ Two sisters. One dream. The hardest open-water swim in the world. This triumphant play from Olivier award-winning Morgan Lloyd Malcom moves forwards and backwards in time across the 21 miles between Dover and Calais, as a young swimmer harnesses her mind and body to make the crossing. With grief and joy, 90s pop songs and lists, oil tankers and jelly babies, love persists whatever the distance, and however perilous the journey to the other side.

LADYKILLER

Sat 12 Feb, 7.30pm

A hotel room, a maid, and a dead woman. It’s not what it looks like, really, it’s not. It was self-defence...and anyway, the woman was asking for it. The chambermaid considers herself to be a pretty normal person; she reads books. She pretended to read the manifestos at the General Election. She’s even read The Psychopath Test and she’s pretty sure she’s not one, so... Award-winning smash-hit Ladykiller is a blood-soaked morality tale about victimhood, power, and flipping the gender rule book on psychopathy. A (gruesome) quintessential, jet-black comedy!
