Alongside these productions are a whole host of performances and events – there’s something for everyone. The whole season is sponsored by Churchgates and we are so grateful to them and to our principal sponsor Jaynic - their support helps us to bring you the very best productions from across the UK, here to Bury St Edmunds.
Our season ends with the event you’ve all been waiting for…the return of Theatre Royal’s Pantomime, sponsored by Taylor Wimpey! After a year off last year, this year Cinderella will finally make it to the ball! Expect mice, pumpkins, glass slippers, fairy godmothers and lots and lots of Christmas magic. We hope you enjoy being back at Theatre Royal this autumn. OWEN CALVERT-LYONS Artistic Director

COMING BACK TO THEATRE ROYAL
We are so looking forward to welcoming you back to the theatre. We opened our doors in May to a socially-distanced audience and those of you who joined us were delighted to return.
“WHAT A JOY IT WAS TO EXPERIENCE LIVE THEATRE AGAIN” SOCIALLY DISTANCED AREA
We want your return to the theatre to be as enjoyable as possible so we are retaining the Gallery as socially distanced seating, with its own dedicated entrance, for now. If you have access needs and want to remain socially distanced – this can also be booked with the Box Office.

BAR SERVICE
Our bar, sponsored by Greene King, will be open again for pre-show drinks 45 minutes before a performance and for interval drinks. If you would prefer to enjoy these in the fresh air, you are welcome to take these into our freshly spruced up garden (thanks to some green-fingered volunteers!) The at-seat bar service has proved very popular so this will still be available in the Dress Circle and Upper Circle for interval drinks only (not available during pantomime).
E-TICKETS
We’ve taken this period of closure as an opportunity to upgrade our ticket check-in procedure so when you book you will now receive your ticket by email. When you arrive the barcode on the e-ticket must be shown to our stewards who will scan you in so we know you have arrived and who is in the building. You can show this on your phone or you can print it out and bring it with you.

HOLES
Stanley Yelnats is under a curse. A curse that began with his no-good-dirty-rottenpig-stealing-great-great-grandfather and has since followed generations of Yelnatses. Now Stanley has been unjustly sent to a detention centre, Camp Green Lake, where the inmates build character by spending all day, every day digging holes exactly five feet wide and five feet deep. There is no lake at Camp Green Lake. But there are an awful lot of holes. It doesn’t take long for Stanley to realize there’s more than character improvement going on at Camp Green Lake. They are digging holes because the warden is looking for something. But what could be buried under a dried-up lake? Louis Sachar’s multi-million bestselling novel is adapted for the stage by the author himself in this inventive and darkly humorous tale of crime and punishment—and redemption.
This is a Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds production, generously supported by Bury St Edmunds Town Council.
Age Guidance: 9+. This production, as with the book, tackles some darker topics. However, these are mainly referred to rather than portrayed on stage. THE BALLAD OF MARIA MARTEN “Flintoff restores dignity to Maria…unexpectedly joyous” The Guardian A thrilling retelling of Suffolk’s real-life murder mystery… Summer, 1827. In a red barn, Maria Marten awaits her lover. A year later, her body is found under the floor of the barn in a grain sack, barely identifiable, and the manhunt begins. Maria’s story sent shock waves throughout the country. The Red Barn Murder (as it became known) was national news, inspiring writers and filmmakers down the ages. The sort of gruesome tale that had all the hallmarks of a classic crime drama – a missing body, a country location, a disreputable squire and a village stuck in its age-old traditions. But in all this hysteria, Maria’s own story gets lost. Until now. Hal Chambers and Beth Flintoff’s spine-tingling retelling rediscovers her story, bringing it back to vivid, urgent life.

& ADULT THEATRE GROUPS
“YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE GOOD AT ACTING AND YOU DON’T HAVE TO WANT TO BE AN ACTOR, BUT AS LONG AS YOU WANT TO HAVE FUN, YOU SHOULD JOIN A THEATRE GROUP. THERE’S SO MANY OTHER THINGS THAT COME WITH IT, LIKE CONFIDENCE AND SOCIAL SKILLS.” ADULT THEATRE GROUPS
Join these groups of like-minded people and enjoy exploring local themes through the arts. This term we will be working with Suffolk Archive and Bury Records Office taking inspiration from the collection of Theatre Royal playbills to create new work. This project will culminate in an exhibition at the Records Office and writing and performance opportunities for all that take part. Whether you are new to the creative process or an old hand this project could be for you.
