s i s p o n Sy Act 1
Act 2
Victorious from the war, the Prince of Aragon, Don Pedro, arrives with his soldiers to visit the home of his friend Leonato and his family in Messina, Italy. Leonato’s niece, Beatrice, engages in a ‘merry war’ of wit with Benedick, a soldier in Don Pedro’s Army. When the young Count Claudio reveals his intention to propose to Leonato’s daughter Hero, he is mocked by confirmed bachelor Benedick. However, Don Pedro agrees to help Claudio by disguising himself and wooing her on his behalf.
The Watch overhear Borachio bragging that he was paid 1,000 ducats to frame the innocent Hero and they arrest the pair. On the morning of the wedding Dogberry informs Leonato that they have someone in custody, but in the excitement of the nuptials, Leonato requests that Dogberry and Verges investigate the case themselves.
Borachio and Conrade, servants in the house of Leonato, hatch a plan with Don Pedro’s bitter bastard brother, Don John, to destroy the young couple’s happiness that night at the Masquerade Ball. But the plan is foiled and the couple set the wedding date. Realising his first plan to destroy everyone’s happiness failed, Borachio comes up with Plan B. They will play on Claudio’s jealous nature and convince him that Hero is unfaithful. The local troop of Guides assemble to take on the task of being the Watch during the Prince’s stay in Messina. They are lead by two rather bumbling adults, Dogberry & Verges. When Beatrice refuses Don Pedro’s marriage proposal, he determines to play Cupid and make Beatrice and Benedick fall in love. He sets his plan in action by fooling Beatrice and Benedick into believing the other is hopelessly in love with them. Don John convinces Don Pedro and Claudio to watch outside Hero’s bedroom window, where they mistakenly witness, Borachio spending the night with Hero’s servingwoman, Margaret, in Hero’s Bedroom, whilst wearing Hero’s garments and calling her Hero. Believing they have witnessed Hero’s betrayal, Claudio is heartbroken.
Claudio denounces Hero at the altar, accusing her of infidelity. Hero attempts to defend herself but when her father and mother appear to believe the accusations, it is too much for her and she faints as Claudio storms out of the wedding. Having observed the whole incident, Friar Francis believes Hero is innocent and some foul play is at work. He suggests that they fake Hero’s death and force Claudio to realise Hero’s innocence. Left alone, Beatrice and Benedick confess their love for each other. She convinces him of Hero’s innocence and what she believes to be Claudio’s treachery. Benedick agrees to stand up for Hero’s honour and challenge Claudio. When Friar Francis attends the investigation of Borachio, he discovers the full truth of Don John’s villainy. Meanwhile, Leonato & Antonio reveal to Claudio that Hero has ‘died’ of grief and Borachio makes a full confession. Leonato & Antonia offer their forgiveness but only if Claudio agrees to attend Hero’s ‘funeral’, make a public statement of her innocence, and marry Hero’s ‘cousin’. On the day of the wedding, Hero reveals herself and is reunited with Claudio. Seizing the moment, Benedick proposes to Beatrice!

From the Director
What a year! Six months ago we did not think we would be here tonight. No sooner did we bump out The Blood of Kings in March, than Part Two and Three were postponed due to a world wide pandemic. Three months ago, still with no end in sight, we decided to get the ensemble together and create something to bring us joy. We started rehearsals knowing we may not make it to performance but we felt we had to try. And now, here we are - with our fingers still firmly crossed each day.
Much Ado About Nothing is a project of love. Love for this event, our company and for you, our audience. Thank you for cheering us on and for supporting us through this tough time. Personally it has been really special to play Beatrice alongside Brendan’s Benedick. We never dreamt of playing these roles but it has been a surprisingly beautiful way to celebrate our 50th show together. Thank you Brendan for the life we share, the careers we’ve carved and the company we created together. ‘I love you with so much of my heart that none is left to protest.’ x Terri

LES LIAISONS DANGEREUSES By C. de. Laclos, adapted by Christopher Hampton Directed by Terri Brabon By arrangement with ORiGiNTM Theatrical, on behalf of Samuel French, Ltd.
Townsville’s very own THEATREiNQ bring you the deliciously wicked, Les Liaisons Dangereuses. Adapted by Christopher Hampton form the 1782 novel, this is the story of the Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont, two rivals (and ex-lovers) who use seduction as a weapon to humiliate and degrade others, all the while
enjoying their cruel games and boasting about their manipulative talents. Their targets are the virtuous (and married) Madame de Tourvel and CĂŠcile de Volanges, a young girl who has fallen in love with her music tutor, the Chevalier Danceny. WARNINGS: PARENTAL GUIDANCE RECOMMENDED FOR CHILDREN UNDER 15. ADULT THEMES.
