S I S P O N SY AC T 1 Scene 1:

‘No Country for Old Men’

Our story begins in Ephesus; a haven for prostitutes, outlaws, illegal poker games and other unsavoury activities. Ephesus has an ongoing rivalry with a neighbouring town, Syracuse, and border controls forbid illegal entrance, a crime punishable by death. Unless, of course, a hefty ransom can be raised. Egeon, an old Merchant from Syracuse, enters from the bay and is promptly arrested and set to hang. He shares his sad tale of misfortune. Many years ago, his wife, Emilia, gave birth to twin boys and at the very same time, a lower-class woman also gave birth to twin boys. Feeling as though it was some sort of ‘sign’, Egeon bought those twins to raise and serve his two sons. But disaster struck, when sailing homeward, they encountered a storm and their ship was split by a mighty rock. Emilia was thrust in one direction with one child and one servant; while Egeon was set adrift in the other direction with the remaining boys. Unable to discover his lost wife’s fate and fearing them all drowned, he returned to Syracuse and renamed the surviving children after their lost brothers; Antipholus & Dromio. Many years passed and Antipholus became determined to discover the fate of his mother and his brother, setting off on a quest with Dromio by his side. He has been gone many years, and fearing now their death also, Egeon had left his home in search of them, which had brought him to Ephesus and to the fate he now faces. Overhearing the story, the Duke of Ephesus agrees to give Egeon one day to raise the money needed to save his life and begins begging through the streets of Ephesus.

Scene 2:

‘The Searchers’

As luck would have it, Egeon’s son Antipholus & Dromio also arrive from Syracuse having sailed on a ship with the help of a young Sailor, who having witnessed the arrest of the old Syracusian, suggests they disguise themselves to escape certain arrest. Dromio heads off with their luggage and money to The Centaur Inn and when he returns it is not his man-servant Dromio but his servant’s twin, Dromio of Ephesus. It turns out the lost set of twins have been in Ephesus all this time and thus the most confusing day in history begins!!! Ephesus has a certain reputation of being full of witchcraft and sorcery, and as tensions rise, Antipholus begins to fear that he has been bewitched and starts to see things that aren’t really there.

Scene 3:

‘The Good, the Bad & the Ugly’

Meanwhile, Adriana, wife of the local Antipholus, is losing her patience waiting for her husband to come home. When their servant, Dromio of Ephesus explains the behaviour of his master, she is more upset than ever and heads off to drag him home. Confronted by Adriana the boys from Syracuse are convinced that they are surrounded by witches and nervously obey their new captors.

Scene 4:

‘The Wild Bunch’

Adriana’s real husband, Antipholus of Ephesus, arrives home for dinner with some friends including Angelo, the Goldsmith. When he discovers the door is locked and no-one will let him in, he decides to get even with his wife by having dinner at The Porcupine Saloon with Dolly, a courtesan that Adriana is extremely jealous of. To make matters worse, he decides to offer Dolly a chain he had commissioned Angelo to make for Adriana. Angelo returns to his shop to finish the chain but is followed by a mysterious gunslinger.

Scene 5:

‘The Misfits’

Poor Antipholus of Syracuse has spent a dinner resisting the mistaken advances of his brother’s wife, while falling quickly in love with her sister, Luciana, who is startled by what she believes to be her brother-in-law’s advances. Dromio of Syracuse shares a similar experience having been claimed as husband by Nell, the kitchen wench. Fearing their lives, they plan to leave Ephesus immediately. Angelo the goldsmith then returns with the gold chain and mistaking this Antipholus for Antipholus of Ephesus, happily gives it to him.

Scene 6:

‘For a Few Dollars More’

Angelo is bailed up by the Gunslinger who demands payment of money he owes her. Still furious at his wife, Antipholus of Ephesus sends his Dromio off to buy some rope. He then meets Angelo who requests payment for the chain so he can pay the money he owes the Gunslinger. Of course, this Antipholus did not receive the chain and an angry argument erupts resulting in multiple arrests by the Officer. Dromio of Syracuse enters from the Bay and mistaking this Antipholus for his master, informs him of a ship he has booked them passage on for their escape. Furious at this stupidity, Antipholus sends him to fetch bail money from Adriana, leaving Dromio of Syracuse, more confused than ever!

i n t e r va l

AC T Scene 1:

2 ‘The Quick and the Dead’

Luciana confesses to a tragically heartbroken Adriana, that Antipholus tried to seduce her. Dromio enters hurriedly requesting the bail money which makes Adriana even more concerned about the odd behaviour of her husband.

Scene 2:

‘The Proposition’

Dromio of Syracuse delivers the bail money to his real master who of course, was never arrested and walks about freely. When propositioned by the Courtesans, the increasingly petrified Antipholus & Dromio of Syracuse conclude that they are the work of Satan and determine to leave once and for all. Shocked by his behaviour towards her, Dolly tells how Antipholus had promised to give her the chain in return for a ring. She agreed and now Antipholus has the ring but is witholding the chain. Dolly decides to go to the Phoenix and tell Adriana that he stole her ring and hopefully have it returned. Meantime, Dromio witnesses two young girls playing with swords and buys them.

Scene 3:

‘The Salvation’

With Dromio not having returned with bail money, Antipholus of Ephesus convinces the Officer to free him to go home for the bail money himself. When Dromio of Ephesus returns with the rope he was sent for but no bail money, Antipholus finally snaps. Adriana witnesses this and concludes that her husband has been possessed and invites the assitance of Doctor Pinch to perform an impromptu exorcism. Things do not go well and Antipholus & Dromio are taken back to Adriana’s house with Doctor Pinch to continue to fight the demon within. Miraculously, the other set of twins then appear with the swords causing the women to scatter in fear.

Scene 4:

‘The Revenant’

Angelo and the Gunslinger see Antipholus of Syracuse wearing the chain about his neck and confront him for denying he’d ever received it. A ruckus ensues and the boys from Syracuse flee into the Priory seeking Sanctuary. The Abbess scolds Adriana for her behaviour and refuses to release the men. Luciana encourages Adriana to complain to the Duke, who, as luck would have it, arrives on the scene to witness the hanging of Egeon, who has not raised a cent. Suddenly, Nell bursts from the Phoenix claiming her master has freed himself and brutalised Doctor Pinch and is hell bent on attacking Adriana. As everyone saw them enter the Priory, they are shocked to see Antipholus and Dromio emerge from the Phoenix. Eventually the two sets of twins come face to face and the Duke unravels the ‘errors’ of this chaotic day!

WHO ARE WE?

TheatreiNQ is committed to providing positive, professional and vibrant theatre experiences to regional Queensland through live productions, training opportunities and promotion of regional artists and works produced in the region. We have been serving the Townsville community as a professionally driven theatre

company for eight years led by actors Terri Brabon and Brendan O’Connor.

THEATREiNQ ENSEMBLE Much like a dance company or orchestra, TheatreiNQ has a firm basis in the work of ensemble. While most Australian Theatre Companies operate from project to project, hiring freelance directors and actors for each production, TheatreiNQ are programming seasons to both challenge and celebrate the strengths of our core and extended ensemble. The unity of the TheatreiNQ Ensemble extends to behind the scenes. Our 40 member strong ensemble includes Stage Management, Technical Crew, Designers and Administration. The company is joined each year by Guest Professsionals from Metropolitan cities as well as local guest performers. This is not a new idea, in fact it was the same principle of Shakespeare’s own company but it is rare to find such a company in Australia.

Since launching as TheatreiNQ in 2010, the company has produced 34 full length productions, facilitated over 200 workshops and master classes, directed the Australian Festival of Chamber Music’s Families’ Concerts in 2013 and 2014 and are the Drama Specialists for the Catholic Education Office’s Mulkadee Arts Festival. TheatreiNQ currently survives thanks to the generous support of local businesses, the local city council and the community. Thank you for your support tonight. If you would like to become part of our ever growing family of local supporters please contact us at theatreinq@gmail.com or website www.theatreinq.com for more information regarding sponsorship and donations.
