Synopsis Background Edward III had Seven Sons, but many of them died in childhood. Those that survived were granted huge dukedoms forming the most powerful families in the realm - House Mortimer, House Lancaster and House York. The first son and heir, Edward the Black Prince, died before his father, leaving behind him his only son, Richard, who after Edward III’s death, was crowned King of England at 10 years old.

Now a grown man, Richard rules tyrannically, spoiling himself and his flatterers, distancing himself from his uncle’s advice and creating dissension in the court. One of the Seven Sons, the Duke of Gloucester, has been murdered and many suspect the King and his friends to have been involved. Henry Bolingbroke, son of Gaunt (the Duke of Lancaster), publicly accuses one of them and a trial by ‘combat to the death’ is held – the winner would not only live but would be seen as being in the right by the hand of God. Rather than have Henry Bolingbroke proved right, Richard aborts the fight and banishes both men instead.
Four young cousins from the Houses of Mortimer, Lancaster & York, try to innocently cling to their friendships with each other. Years pass, the children grow and despite the turmoil of their childhood, their relationships deepen. Prince Hal, now heir to the throne, spends his time at the Boar’s Head Tavern with the riff-raff of Eastcheap, evading life at court in favour of heavy drinking and petty theft in the company of a debauched elderly knight, Sir John Falstaff.
The sudden death of Henry’s father Gaunt ensues, and Richard claims all the Lancastrian Estate for himself, to help pay for a war in Ireland. The formidable House Percy of the North intervene and help Henry win back his legal right to the Lancaster Dukedom. Richard’s armies abandon him and the rebels kill his friends and advisors. So how can Richard truly call himself King, God’s presence on earth, if Henry is the one in control? But even if Richard is deposed, House Mortimer is next in line.
An ailing King Henry IV is continuously troubled during his reign, facing uprisings from the Welsh and the Scots. When the head of House Mortimer and legally the rightful King of England, is taken prisoner in Scotland, Henry refuses to pay his ransom. This angers House Percy, who were once so loyal to Henry’s cause, and they turn against him, leading a rebellion to place Mortimer on the throne. Hoping to redeem himself in his father’s eyes, Hal joins his father’s army as they face their enemies. Here, on the battlefield at Shrewsbury, God will decide who shall be seated in His throne.

From the Director I have been obsessed with Shakespeare’s History Plays for many years. In fact, one of the first presents Brendan ever gave me was a book called ‘Shakespeare’s Kings’ and I was hooked. I remember when I first moved to Melbourne in 2003, with no acting work, I spent my days at the Public Library drowning in Dukes and Earls, and, with no computer, handwriting my first adaptation of these plays. I still have that handwritten adaptation and parts of it have made it into the final product you see tonight. I am honoured to finally be able to produce my The Wars of the Roses Trilogy to celebrate TheatreiNQ’s Tenth Birthday. This project will take us all year and cover eight of Shakespeare’s History Plays. We have set ourselves the challenge of presenting each show in a unique venue, in its own unique style. Additionally, I have made it my mission to include historic female characters who were denied a voice in Shakespeare’s resource material. It has not been easy but I have included at least one speaking female in every scene – no small feat in a Shakespeare History Play, let me tell you! It has been a beautiful experience welcoming James & Joseph home to work on this epic project with us, alongside an amazing team of the most dedicated and talented people who put so much time and energy into this company. I am constantly humbled by you all. Thank you to our audience, for coming along on this journey with us, and for all the support and love you have shown TheatreiNQ for the past ten years. You will never know how much it means to us.

Adapted by Christopher Hampton form the 1782 novel, this is the story of the Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont, two rivals (and ex-lovers) who use seduction as a weapon to humiliate and degrade others, all the while
enjoying their cruel games and boasting about their manipulative talents. Their targets are the virtuous (and married) Madame de Tourvel and Cécile de Volanges, a young girl who has fallen in love with her music tutor, the Chevalier Danceny.
