Romeo and Juliet 2014

Page 1

& by William Shakespeare

16 – 28 SEPTEMBER QUEENS GARDENS

Two households both alike in dignity (In fair Verona, where we lay our scene) From ancient grudge break to new mutiny, Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean. From forth the fatal loins of these two foes A pair of star-cross’d lovers take their life, Whose misadventur’d piteous overthrows Doth with their death bury their parents’ strife. The fearful passage of their death-mark’d love And the continuance of their parents’ rage, Which, but their children’s end, nought could remove, Is now the three hours’ traffic of our stage.

FROM THE DIRECTOR… I chose to do Romeo & Juliet for two reasons. One, is Anna Wallace and the other, is James Thomasson. I have had the pleasure of working with these two fine young actors for the past 5 years as part of The Bridge Project. Their natural talent for Shakespeare has always been strong and over the years, they have taken on more and more demanding roles, always being challenged and growing with each production. Honestly, I could have lived my whole life without seeing another Romeo & Juliet but the time was right for Anna & James, so we decided to do it. And boy, am I glad I did. I have never been a fan of Romeo & Juliet, as over done as it is. I began rehearsals by trying to remove all pre-conceived notions of this famous story and its famous roles and encouraged the cast to do the same. What we have discovered together, is an amazing story of fragile youthful innocence, trapped inside the eye of a violent storm. The ending is as inevitable as it is tragic, and I have fallen deeply in love with this play. And for that, I thank our cast for revealing the “beating heart” of Romeo & Juliet to me. I thank Jean-Pierre, as always, not only for fostering my love of directing Shakespeare, but for allowing me to be his Juliet in 1996, and for introducing me to so many special people who I continue to work with today. I can only hope to offer Anna & JT, half of what he gave to me.

xxx Terri

OUR EMERGING ARTISTS TRAINING PROGRAMME BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN REGIONAL & PROFESSIONAL

The Bridge Project is the brainchild of TheatreiNQ's Terri Brabon and Brendan O'Connor, who both ventured from Townsville to carve themselves careers in the professional theatre industry. With a genuine desire to assist regional emerging talent to launch careers in the mainstream industry, The Bridge Project was officially launched in 2012 with 8 young talents between the ages of 17 - 20. Through a series of masterclasses with guest industry professionals from Sydney & Melbourne, ongoing professional development, and involvement on professionally-driven local productions with TheatreiNQ, The Bridge Project aims to give our promising emerging talent the best start possible, on-going guidance and mentorship throughout their careers. Several members of The Bridge Project are now furthering their careers at institutions all over the country. In 2014, The Bridge Project has expanded, now offering a Technical Strand to technicians wishing to develop their skills, as well as an Apprenticeship scheme in which two third-year students work with the company as Apprentice Actors. Entry into The Bridge Project is by Audition/Interview only. See Website for details.
