OTHELLO by William Shakespeare adapted and directed by Terri Brabon

Synopsis Act 1

Act 2

Venice is place of religion, order and class rule. Othello, an outsider from a foreign land, has managed to rise through the ranks of the Venetian Army and recently been appointed General. He has also secretly won the heart of Desdemona, daughter to a high-born nobleman and they have eloped. But sinister forces are at work where the couple least expect it. One of Othello’s closest and most trusted friends, Iago, feels slighted that Othello overlooked him for a promotion and instead, chose to bestow the title of Lieutenant on the lessexperienced but well-born Cassio. Iago is also being paid by another wealthy suitor, Roderigo, to assist in his efforts to win Desdemona’s affections. Together they wake Desdemona’s father, inform him of the elopement and lead him directly to the newlyweds. A fight erupts in the street until the Duke of Venice and his guards intervene. Desdemona must choose between her father and her love. News arrives of a Turkish attack upon the island of Cyprus and Othello is to set sail immediately. Desdemona begs to accompany her husband and Iago is chosen to escort her, along with his wife Emilia as serving-maid. In turn, Iago convinces Roderigo to raise all the money he can, join the army, travel with him to Cyprus and continue his pursuit of Desdemona.

When Desdemona cannot produce the handkerchief and Othello witnesses Cassio giving the same handkerchief to a whore, Othello determines to murder his wife. Othello’s state of mind deteriorates rapidly and he begins to unravel as representatives from Venice arrive in the camp demanding his return to Venice. Desdemona remains confused as to the reason for the sudden change in her husband’s affections towards her and feels a strange foreboding of her own death. Meanwhile, Iago convinces Roderigo to attack Cassio in the middle of the night, but when things don’t go as planned, Iago must think quickly and take matters into his own hands. But there is one person he has underestimated - his wife.

A great storm destroys the Turkish fleet and the newlyweds are reunited on the island of Cyprus. In the celebration of the wars won, Iago provokes a drunken brawl for which Cassio is blamed and stripped of his position. Iago confesses to Othello that he suspects Desdemona may be unfaithful, suggesting that she and Cassio are secret lovers. Already insecure about their class differences, Othello quickly becomes very suspicious of his innocent wife and when she pleads for Cassio to be reinstated, he takes this as confirmation of her love for him. When Emilia picks up Desdemona’s handkerchief, a treasured gift from Othello, Iago plants it in Cassio’s room as further proof of their betrayal. Othello cannot sleep, nor stop his mind from racing. He promotes Iago to Lieutenant and makes a pact to kill Cassio within 3 days.

From the Director

Jean-Pierre Awards

This is not the first time Shakespeare Under the Stars has tackled the beast that is OTHELLO. In 2007, John du Feu directed a production featuring Tom E. Lewis in the title role, produced by Jean-Pierre Voos’ company, Tropic Line Theatre. All three of these brilliant men have now passed away and I am humbled to create this production in honour of the memory of what we have all learned by standing on the shoulders of these giants. To have Brittany and James home has brought Brendan and myself more joy than we could have possibly imagined. These two first joined the company whilst both still at high school and were Original Members and the catalysts for creating The Bridge Project in 2012. We have watched them grow, cheered on their success and been right behind them as they forge their careers in the industry and we couldn’t be prouder of them both. Likewise, I have followed Alfie’s career with immense pride. Whilst actually having never met him before this experience, he was my first choice when casting the title role. Alfie has fitted into this tight knit company so extremely well that it feels as though he has always been one of ours. Locking down all three of these young professionals into one show was no mean feat, and I’m thrilled that we managed to pull it off. I’m extremely proud to offer them the opportunity to perform for a home crowd and for our audience to see them perform in their backyard once more. To the TheatreiNQ Team, you guys make it all worthwhile and we appreciate the mammoth effort you put in year after year on this event and for our company. None of this would be possible without you.

x Terri

COMING IN 2020

A YEAR LONG CELEBRATION FOR THEATREiNQ’S 10TH BIRTHDAY

www.theatreinq.com

ELEBRATES IN 2020!

Formed in 2010, TheatreiNQ was born of a desire to continue the wonderful tradition of Townsville’s very own Shakespeare Under The Stars after the death of Jean-Pierre Voos. TheatreiNQ founders, Terri Brabon & Brendan O’Connor have a long history with Shakespeare Under the Stars, beginning a life-long love of Shakespeare through participation in the event and continuing to perform his plays all over the country. And while TheatreiNQ has grown over the past 10 years, this event remains at its heart. When planning how to commemorate ten years in operation, we needed to look no further than William Shakespeare. 2020 will see the TheatreiNQ ensemble forge through hundreds of years of history in a bold, brave, new adaptation by Artistic Director Terri Brabon of ‘The Wars of the Roses’, encompassing eight of Shakespeare’s history plays. This incredible true story of one of the bloodiest periods in English History, formed the basis of George R. R. Martin, A Song of Ice & Fire (The Game of Thrones) TheatreiNQ’s The Wars of the Roses promises a dynamic, reworking of the story to illuminate the female characters and other pivotal women of the period. This epic event will roll out throughout 2020 over three chapters, across three performance seasons, in three different performance venues, culminating in September with the final chapter staged here in Queens Gardens as the 25th Shakespeare Under The Stars. Subscriptions for our Tenth Birthday Celebration Season will go on sale soon!
