one man, two guvnors Playwright Richard Bean, along with the Artistic Director of the National Theatre Nicholas Hytner, set out to create a contemporary version of Carlo Goldoni’s THE SERVANT OF TWO MASTERS. Bean altered the setting from 1740’s Florence to 1960’s Brighton and incorporated music hall, pantomime and farce to reflect the Commedia Del’Arte style of the original. And while the names of the characters’ have changed, they predominately retain the original function of their Commedia counterparts. The National Theatre production, featuring James Corden in the leading role of Francis Henshall, opened in 2011, followed by a National tour of England and a season on the West End. The following year, the production transferred to Broadway and six months later played a tour oif Hong Kong, New Zealand and Australia. TheatreiNQ’s proudly presents the Queensland Premiere of this Modern Masterpiece.
director One Man Two Guvnors is a wonderfully imaginative adaptation by Richard Bean of the classic Commedia dell’Arte play, The Servant of Two Masters, transposing the setting from 18th Century Venice to 1960’s Brighton. While the world of the play has been “updated”, Bean has faithfully captured the rollicking spirit of the original by staying true to the plot and stock characters, and packing the action with physical comedy, lazzi, and regular transgressions against the fourth wall! The play has been a hit in several countries since it was first performed in 2011, and when Terri and Brendan got in touch last year inviting me to direct a production for THEATREiNQ we all thought that One Man Two Guvnors would be great fun to do. The improvisatory and at times anarchic nature of the play is what makes it so appealing to audiences and performers alike, however it also demands precision and technical skill from anyone who tackles it. Throughout rehearsals I’ve been bowled over by the way this enthusiastic cast has collectively taken on the challenge and it has been a great pleasure to work with such a diligent and multi-skilled ensemble. It has been a very special experience working again with my old friend and Tropic Line partner in crime Brendan, after a gap of 25 years. Age has not withered him, and I am still in awe of his dynamic energy and inventiveness - Francis is certainly a role he is born to play! And of course it is also fabulous to be working with Terri again after last performing together on a Tropic Line tour of Queensland in JP Voos’s production of “The Importance of Being Earnest” in 1998. Together, Brendan and Terri have done a magnificent job in developing THEATREiNQ into such an alive and creative theatre company in the north, and with its blend of youthful energy coming from The Bridge Project, married to such a talented group of experienced performers, I am sure it will go from strength to strength in the future.
