From the Director Wow! What a ride this show has been. From the moment we settled on it, I was terrified. But of course, I love a good challenge. Measure for Measure is described as a ‘Problem Play’ - mainly because it cannot be defined, cannot be placed in a box, the comedy and the tragedy sit uncomfortabl y side by side in a way that we don’t seem to understand. But that is life. That is why people laugh so hard at funerals, or cry so deeply at weddings.

It’s a difficult conversation but I also believe the ‘Problem’ with this play is that we no longer believe in the power of mercy, the power of forgiveness. In our world of cancel culture, and self-righteous ness, we no longer allow others to make mistakes, be granted second chances and shown a better way forward. This does not mean that I am in any way condoning the behaviour of Angelo in the play, of course not, in fact his behaviour has to be so unforgivable, so as to make Isabella’s actions that much more inspiring. I watched a very moving documentary of a woman who had forgiven the young man who had killed her son. Noone could understand it, it seems an impossible thing to do. Forgiveness does not condone the act, but the profound effect it had on the young man, changed his life. And choosing love over hate, helped the woman heal. Forgiveness is a powerful thing.
