Presents the 18th Season of SHAKESPEARE UNDER THE STARS

SYNOPSIS

As Macbeth and Banquo, soldiers in Scottish King Duncan's army, return victorious from battle, they are confronted by the Weird Sisters, who greet Macbeth as 'Thane of Glamis', 'Thane of Cawdor' and 'King hereafter'. Banquo is also promised that he shall sire a line of Kings.

As the women vanish, Macbeth receives the news that he has in fact been named Thane of Cawdor.

Lady Macbeth receives her husband's news and worries that Macbeth lacks the courage necessary to seize the crown that he has been promised. Arriving home, Macbeth expresses his doubts but is convinced by Lady Macbeth that the deed must be done. That night, Macbeth stabs Duncan in his sleep and frames the sleeping guards.

Nobleman Macduff is the first to discover Duncan's body and sounds the alarm. Macbeth is named King as Duncan's sons Malcolm and Donalbain flee fearing they will be next to fall. With the Weird Woman's prophecy in mind, Macbeth organises the murder of Banquo and his son, Fleance. The hired assassins succeed in killing Banquo but Fleance escapes. After the appearence of the Ghost of Banquo at his banquet, Macbeth returns to the Weird Sisters, desperate to know his fate. He is shown apparitions which tell him to 'beware Macduff'', that he shall not be killed by "one of woman born" and not to fear "till Birnam Wood comes to Dunsinane."

After learning that Macduff has fled the country to join Malcolm's army, he orders the murder of his wife and children. Haunted by their sins, Lady Macbeth begins to sleepwalk nightly, and the ambitious couple begin to feel "their secret murders sticking to their hands"

The Curse of the Scottish Play

Why is the play Macbeth considered to be so cursed that actors generally refer to it as “the Scottish Play”? When first performed in 1606, King James I, considering himself an authority on witchcraft, decided the witches’ incantations (“double, double, toil and trouble” etc.) were genuine spells. Is this the reason for the bad luck that supposedly affects every production?

Some recorded instances of the curse – It may be apocryphal but it was reported that a young boy named Berridge who played Lady Macbeth (as was the norm in those days) died during its inaugural season in 1606.

There was a riot in New York in 1849 when two rival companies were both performing Macbeth. Supporters of each rioted in the streets and over 20,000 people were involved. The local militia was called in and 30 people were shot dead.

The man who “invented” method acting, Stanislavsky, had a first-hand experience with the curse when his prompter failed to give him his line and was found dead.

The great Olivier himself was only narrowly missed by a falling stage weight in his 1937 Old Vic production.

In 1947 a repertory company incurred the curse when the actor playing Macbeth was accidentally stabbed in the chest and later died. This is just one of a number of cases of either Macbeth or Macduff being killed or wounded during their sword fight.

Our Shakespeare Under the Stars has experienced its own connection with the curse when in 1996, on opening night of Macbeth in the Quarry, a .44 Gallon drum exploded into the face of actor John Wake, who ironically was playing the role of the Bloody Captain.

There are dozens of recorded instances of other mishaps with productions. Any play requiring fights with swords is likely to have a mishap somewhere along the way if the action is to look real.

If an actor says the word “Macbeth” in a theatre, no matter what play they are involved in, they must exit the room immediately, turn around three times, spit, say the worst swear-word they can think of and then knock on the door before they may be readmitted.

As this particular production is being rehearsed in an area which is not technically a theatre, and will be performed in the open air, director Terri Brabon has lifted the ban on the “M” word.

With so many spectacular sword fights, eerie special effects, witches and ghosts, only time will tell if she is tempting fate with this decision.

FROM THE DIRECTOR I have wanted to tackle Macbeth for quite a long time but I am thrilled that I have waited for this moment and this team. This has been a wonderful process and I’m so grateful to this hard-working ensemble who have truly given their all. To share the Macbeth stage once more with members of Jean-Pierre’s Voos’ 1996 production (John Goodson, Kellie Esling and Robert Street) is a loving tribute. To have the added bonus of Syd Brisbane and Ebony Buckle available to join the production is a blessing.

To have such incredible and dedicated young actors to pull this idea off is remarkable. To have the opportunity to perform with Brendan as Macbeth is a dream come true.

Syd has been working in the industry for 30 years since graduating from Flinders University in 1983.

Undoubtedly one of the highlights has been performing in SHAKESPEARE UNDER THE STARS’ production of HENRY V in Townsville in 2009. Recent work includes THE WORST YEAR OF MY LIFE AGAIN (ABC3/BBC) and the feature film FELL and ORLANDO (Melbourne Festival 2012). Syd has worked with many theatre companies including SYDNEY THEATRE COMPANY, SA THEATRE COMPANY, PLAYBOX, KEEN/TAYLOR & ILBIJERRI and as a member of the AUSTRALIAN SHAKESPEARE COMPANY, Syd has appeared in THE COMEDY OF ERRORS, A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM, ROMEO & JULIET, TWELFTH NIGHT, MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING (North Aust Tour) and HENRY IV PART ONE. EBONY BUCKLE ............................................ WEIRD SISTER

Originally from Townsville, Ebony developed her love of theatre firstly through her studies with Fiona Perry, and then within the Townsville theatre community. She has been involved with various local productions over the years, most recently Kim in BYE BYE BIRDIE and Cosette in LES MISERABLES. Ebony studied classical music at the University of Queensland before moving to London to study Musical Theatre at the Mountview Academy and has since been working and establishing her career in the UK. Television credits include Ellen Mallam in the BBC drama INSPECTOR GEORGE GENTLY, as well as a campaign for TRUVIA. Theatre credits include Louise in GYPSY(Mountview), Alice in A...MY NAME IS ALICE (London WOW Festival), Bar Maid in LA BOHEME(Soho Theatre) and Julie Jordan in CAROUSEL(The Landor Theatre). Ebony spends much of her time dressing up as a maid at corporate functions, before surprising them with Opera tunes. This is Ebony's 1st SHAKESPEARE UNDER THE STARS and she is honoured to be part of such a wonderful event.

TERRI BRABON .......................................... LADY MACBETH

Born and bred in Ayr, Terri began her career under the direction of the late Jean-Pierre Voos who nurtured her love of Shakespeare. MACBETH marks her 12th SHAKESPEARE UNDER THE STARS and her 8th as Director. Terri is the Artistic Director of THEATREiNQ, most recently directing and performing in productions of THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST and LAST POST. For the past 9 years , Terri has also been a proud member of the AUSTRALIAN SHAKESPEARE COMPANY in Melbourne. Terri has played the role of Lady Macbeth twice before - in 2011 for the AUSTRALIAN SHAKESPEARE COMPANY and in the original SHAKESPEARE UNDER THE STARS production in 1996.

BRENDAN O’CONNOR ........................................ MACBETH

Brendan was lucky enough to work with JeanPierre Voos for 6 years as a founding member of TROPIC LINE THEATRE. He has spent the past 15 years with the AUSTRALIAN SHAKESPEARE COMPANY under the direction of Glenn Elston.

TV and Film credits include NEIGHBOURS, STINGERS, BLUE HEELERS and NED KELLY as well as campaigns for MITRE 10, RACQ and CAMPBELL’S SOUP. Brendan is the Associate Producer of THEATREiNQ also performing in their productions of THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST, LAST POST, KING LEAR, WHEN THE RAIN STOPS FALLING, THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR and RICHARD III. JONATHON BROWN ................................................ ROSSE

This is Jonathon’s 8th SHAKESPEARE UNDER THE STARS, his first experience was in the 2000 production of TWELFTH NIGHT as Fabian, followed by Gratiano in THE MERCHANT OF VENICE (2001), Hortensio in TAMING OF THE SHREW (2002), Oliver in AS YOU LIKE IT (2003), Don Pedro in MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING (2004), Pistol in MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR (2011) and Duke of Albany in last year’s KING LEAR. Jonathon now works full time with LA LUNA YOUTH ARTS tutoring, directing and writing for the company. Jonathon would like to dedicate his

performance this year to Phillipa Rowan.

RAY DICKSON ................................................. THE PORTER

Ray has been involved in the Townsville theatre scene as a performer, director and in administrative roles for over 40 years. He has acted in and/or directed more than 25 plays for the iconic Stage Door Theatre and was a founding member of their ground-breaking Theatre Restaurant. His first SHAKESPEARE UNDER THE STARS was in JeanPierre Voos' production of TWELFTH NIGHT as Sir Toby Belch in 2000.

Since then, he has appeared in LOVE'S LABOUR'S LOST and THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR. His body of work saw him receive the City Council's Arts & Entertainment "Lifetime Achievement Award" in 2003. He now serves on the Executive Committee of THEATREiNQ and has directed a number of award winning one-act plays for TOWNSVILLE LITTLE THEATRE. Ray is thrilled to be back on stage with such a talented cast and crew and with a director of undoubted genius in MACBETH.

KELLIE ESLING ........................................... LADY MACDUFF

Kellie graduated with a Bachelor of Arts/Drama from James Cook University and joined JeanPierre Voos' TROPIC LINE ensemble in 1995.

Kellie is the current Event Co-ordinator of SHAKESPEARE UNDER THE STARS and received the Jean-Pierre Award for services to the event in 2011. A current Core Member of the THEATREiNQ ensemble, Kellie has appeared in KING LEAR (2012) & COSI (2011) and her most recent role as Anne in X-STACY (2013). Kellie also teaches for the company’s youth drama programme The Beginners’ Call.

ARMINELLE FLEMING ............................................ HECATE

Arminelle is a born and bred Townsvillian but has travelled nationally and internationally to train as an actor and acting coach. After graduating from QUT with a BA (Drama/English) she worked as an actor, director and stage manager for various companies in Brisbane and Townsville including ZEN ZEN ZO, MATRIX THEATRE and THE QUEENSLAND BALLET. Arminelle has trained internationally with SHAKESPEARE & CO (USA), TRINITY COLLEGE (UK) and ACS (Scotland). She currently teaches acting and voice at James Cook University, teaches yoga at Latin Vibrations and runs THEATREiNQ’s The Beginners’ Call program (acting classes for high school students). Arminelle is relishing being the personification of evil in her favourite Shakespearean play – MACBETH!

JOHN GOODSON ................................................. BANQUO This is John’s 10th SHAKESPEARE UNDER THE STARS, his first being MACBETH, performed in the Echlin St Quarry in 1996. This year’s MACBETH also occurs on his 10th wedding anniversary, the celebration of 10 wonderful, consecutive years; the Shakespeares on the other hand have been a whole lot less consecutive and more haphazard with whole years off at a time. Among the 10 Shakespeares, John performed as Falstaff in MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR (2011); Buckingham in RICHARD III (2010) and Pistol in HENRY V (2009). Earlier this year he performed as Father Paul in THEATREiNQ’s X-STACY and is very excited to be returning to MACBETH as Banquo.

CARLA LEJARRAGA............. UNA (LADY M’S HANDMAIDEN)

Carla first joined the company in 2010 as Lady Anne in RICHARD III. The following year in 2011, Carla appeared as Lucy in the company's acclaimed season of COSI. Hailing from Ayr, Carla spent her teenage years singing and dancing as a member of the BURDEKIN SINGERS. From 19972000, she was a member of the University of QLD's College Players in Brisbane, acting and directing. Carla has performed with NQOMT and THE TOWNSVILLE CHORAL SOCIETY in productions of CHICAGO, GREASE, BUDDY THE MUSICAL and her hilarious turn as April Tap in HOT SHOE SHUFFLE in 2008. Carla is thrilled to be back performing with the amazing THEATREiNQ cast for her 2nd SHAKESPEARE UNDER THE STARS.

JESSE MORGAN ............................................ MURDERER 2 This is Jesse’s 4th SHAKESPEARE UNDER THE STARS. After studying drama in high school Jesse first appeared on the garden stage as a soldier in 2009’s HENRY V. He returned as Alderman in 2010’s RICHARD III and in the role of Winoc for last year’s KING LEAR.

TAYLAH SMITH ......................................................... CHILD

Taylah is in Grade 7 at St Joseph’s Mundingburra and this is her 5th SHAKESPEARE UNDER THE STAR having appeared in HENRY V (2009), RICHARD III (2010), MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR (2011) and KING LEAR (2012).

Taylah attended THEATREiNQ’s The Culture Club earlier this year and is excited to be a part of bringing this story to life!

JOSHUA SMITH ......................................................... CHILD

This is Joshua’s 5th SHAKEPEARE UNDER THE STARS production appearing as young Richard III in HENRY V (2009), Duke of York in RICHARD III (2010), Robin in MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR (2011) and a Bedlam in last year’s KING LEAR. Joshua was a participant in THEATREiNQ’s The Culture Club earlier this year learning the story of Macbeth. Joshua loves playing basketball and rugby league and hopes you enjoy the show tonight!

This is Emma’s 5th SHAKESPEARE UNDER THE STARS production with THEATREiNQ, appearing as Lady Anne in HENRY V (2009), Princess Bridget in RICHARD III (2010), Maggie Page in THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR (2011) and Enora in last year’s KING LEAR. Emma loves playing basketball and running around Queens Gardens at night!

EMMA LAMBERTON ................................................. MAID

Emma joined THEATREiNQ in 2012 working behind the scenes on their production of WHEN THE RAIN STOPS FALLING and hasn’t looked back. She made her stage debut with the company in SHAKESPEARE UNDER THE STARS’ KING LEAR and continues her training in 2013 as a member of THEATREiNQ’s The Bridge Project. This year Emma has appeared in THEATREiNQ’s production of X-STACY, Production Assistant for LAST POST and most recently as a Maid in THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST.

JAYDEN POPIK .........................................................LENOX

This is Jayden’s 2nd SHAKESPEARE UNDER THE STARS after appearing in last year’s KING LEAR. Jayden is in his 2nd year of The Bridge Project and was seen earlier this year as Fergus in XSTACY. In November, Jayden will be playing Adam in THE SHAPE OF THINGS.

BRITTANY SANTARIGA ..............................................MAID

This is Brittany's 3rd year with THEATREiNQ. Past productions include THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST (2013), X-STACY (2013), KING LEAR (2012) and THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR (2011). Brittany is currently a member of THEATREiNQ's The Bridge Project and will next be seen as Evelyn in THE SHAPE OF THINGS this November.

JAMES THOMASSON ......................................... MALCOLM

James has been a member of THEATREiNQ since 2010 when he was fourteen. He has appeared in the past three SHAKESPEARE UNDER THE STARS productions KING LEAR, THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR and RICHARD III. In 2012, James joined THEATREiNQ's The Bridge Project and continues his training with the company this year, most recently appearing as the Footman in THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST and Ben in X-STACY. James will be appearing as Phillip in THE SHAPE OF THINGS in November.

ANNA WALLACE ........................................... WEIRD SISTER

Anna is an ensemble member of THEATREiNQ performing the roles of Cecily in THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST, Cordelia in KING LEAR, Anne Page in THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR and Princess Elizabeth in RICHARD III. In 2011, Anna was the Director’s Assistant for COSI and received the inaugural Martin Gibson Medal for promising young talent. Currently, she is training with THEATREiNQ’s The Bridge Project and will next be seen as Jenny in THE SHAPE OF THINGS.

NIMISHA AITHAL .......................................... WEIRD SISTER

Nimisha has participated in many drama Eisteddfods, the last two Townsville Grammar School productions and some small local plays.

She has trained with THE ACTORS GALLERY for the past five years and is currently undertaking her Associate of Trinity College London exams in Speech and Drama performance. This is Nimisha's first production with THEATREiNQ and she is looking forward to playing the role of a Weird Sister.

MICHAEL DORIS ................................................... DOCTOR

Michael is proud to be part of another THEATREiNQ production, previously appearing as the Marquess of Dorset in 2010’s RICHARD III and again earlier this year in their production of X-STACY. Michael performed in Townsville Grammar School’s SWEENEY TODD and THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS Michael was awarded the 2009 Regional Medal for Musical Theatre by the Trinity College of London. Last year he produced his own production of Charles Dickens’ A CHRISTMAS CAROL, which earned a terrific response from audiences of all ages. This year Michael has completed an Associate Performance Diploma with the Trinity College, and is close to finishing his fourth year of Medicine at JCU.

OLIVIA ILLIDGE ............................ DAUGHTER OF MACDUFF MACBETH marks Olivia's first SHAKESPEARE UNDER THE STARS as an actor, although she has been attending as an audience member since she was 7 years old! Olivia attended the company's Open Public Masterclass in 2012 and now trains with THEATREiNQ's The Beginners' Call and attends The Cathedral School.

Kellie has always been drawn to the drama world, having been involved in many drama festivals during her school years in Home Hill (1999- 2003).

However her love of travel has meant that she has not been able to settle anywhere long enough to get involved in a local theatre scene. Until now!

After working with Terri and Brendan at Mulkadee this year, Kellie realised just how much she missed the stage and she is thrilled to be playing a Maid in this year’s production of SHAKESPEARE UNDER THE STARS.

This is David's first SHAKESPEARE UNDER THE STARS, however having been in the army for 10 years he is used to excessive wardrobes and 'life being a stage'. A poetry reading winner at the age of 13, David has been writing a book for the past 2 and a half years. He also renovates houses, which is why the book is yet to be finished! JOE PICKEN .......................................................... FLEANCE

Joe is a student of Fiona Perry’s Actors Gallery.

Along with his brother Sam, Joe attended the THEATREiNQ general auditions for the 2013 season and is excited to take on the role of Fleance.

Joe has been attending the SHAKESPEARE UNDER THE STARS event for many years and is looking forward to being on stage this year.

SAM PICKEN .......................................... SON OF MACDUFF This is Sam’s first production with THEATREiNQ. Last year Sam went along to the general auditions for the 2013 season and was offered a role in Macbeth.

Sam has been attending SHAKESEPARE UNDER THE STARS with his grandmother for as long as he can remember. His earliest memory is of Jean-Pierre’s ROMEO & JULIET in 2006. A student of Fiona Perry’s Actors Gallery for the past 3 years, Sam appeared in this year’s Townsville Grammar School production of THE SERVANT OF TWO MASTERS.

JOHN ROBERTSON ........................................ MURDERER 1

Graduating with Honors (First Class) from James Cook University in 1998, John currently works for Channel Seven Townsville as the Production camera operator and graphic designer. He has worked extensively with professional theatre companies throughout Queensland and NSW as a lighting and sound designer, and has also worked as an event manager, actor, director and film maker.

Currently training with THEATREiNQ’s The Beginners Call, this is Lachlan’s first SHAKESPEARE UNDER THE STARS. Lachlan has studied drama with LA LUNA YOUTH ARTS since 2010 appearing in their production of CABARET LUMIERE in 2011.

This year, Lachlan performed in PIMLICO PRESENTS and was awarded Best Junior Actor for his performance in LITTLE BROTHER LITTLE SISTER at the FESTIVAL OF ONE ACT PLAYS..

Robert has been involved in the Townsville performing community over the last 23 years.

Graduating from JCU in 1992 he was cast in the original SHAKESPEARE UNDER THE STARS in that same year. This is Robert’s fourth Shakespeare production and the second time he has been involved in MACBETH. The first production was in 1996 where he played Malcolm. This time around he is not playing one of the nice guys and is enjoying the challenge of being evil. Robert is very honoured to be involved in a THEATREiNQ production working with some of North Queensland’s finest actors.

TECHNICIANS

CHRIS NOBILE .......... STAGE MANAGER/SOUND OPERATOR

Chris has been involved with the Townsville Theatre scene since 2006, behind the scenes on various productions including THE SPINDLE SIDESHOW (2011), for the TOWNSVILLE CHORAL SOCIETY; MY FAIR LADY (2011), WEST SIDE STORY (2011), CHICAGO (2012) and NQOMT; THE BOY FROM OZ (2011), HAIR (2012), and HAIRSPRAY (2012). Chris is an Electrician working for the family business Elibon Solutions and has been involved behind the scenes at SHAKESPEARE UNDER THE STARS since 2010, most recently as Stage Manager and Sound Operator for KING LEAR. Chris is back to take on the same roles for this year's production of MACBETH.

THOMAS ROACH ............................... LIGHTING OPERATOR

Thomas is a dedicated member of the Townsville Theatre community, has worked on THE SPINDLE SIDESHOW and every NQOMT and Townsville Choral Society production since 2009 including THE BOY FROM OZ (2009), AVENUE Q (2011) and HAIRSPRAY (2012).

An apprentice electrician at Elibon Solutions, Tom was the winner of the Technical Award at the North Queensland Arts Awards this year.

Thomas loves being a part of the THEATREiNQ team recently operating lights for their production of LAST POST. This is Thomas' 4th SHAKESPEARE UNDER THE STARS, his first being RICHARD III in 2010.
