From The Director I studied Barry Dickins during my time at drama school and have always loved his work, so I was a bit overwhelmed when we first met him. We were at a café in Melbourne, visiting our friend, actor Syd Brisbane who was performing in Barry’s latest work called, ‘Ryan’ I remember gushing awkwardly as Brendan spoke eloquently and by the end of the meeting, Brendan had convinced Barry to write a play for our company. I had no idea where that café conversation would lead us. But here we are, being honoured with a World Premiere of a Barry Dickins play!! I am very grateful to Barry for his faith in us and for writing two such amazing roles for older women. It has been such a beautiful experience to work with two of my oldest friends and two incredible actresses on such a deeply moving piece. For me, the play evokes memories of a past era, of a style of language we don’t hear anymore, and of people who lived life without reward. Gert and Bess reminds us of a forgotten generation of Australians, sending echoes through the halls of our collective memory. xxx Terri
