Old Townsville West State School Costing roughly $45,000, the Old Townsville West State School was built during the Depression by local workers employed under the Unemployment Relief Scheme. Officially opened in 1939, the building is one of four surviving intact schools of the period in North Queensland. The building contained twenty-one classrooms including Woodwork, Dressmaking and Home Science rooms. It was the only school in Townsville with such facilities and students from other areas visited the school once a week to receive tuition. Storerooms and toilets were located on the ground floor with the remainder of the ground floor space utilised as play space. The Memorial gates at the main entrance, were erected in 1921, and are inscribed with the names of students and teachers who served in the Great War. The building has played many roles during various periods of Townsville’s history. During WWII, it was commandeered by the military as a first aid and convalescent ward and during Cyclone Althea, the school became a relief centre, with the Home Science room opened to the community to cook meals. When the Townsville West State School moved its operations to new classrooms directly behind this site, the building was used by various organisations including the Townsville and District Education Centre and as a Demonstration School for student teachers of the Townsville Teachers College. Having sat dormant for many years, TheatreiNQ are honoured to to have been given this fitting opportunity to “bring it back to life” for our production of Frankenstein.

From

the

Director

Welcome to our first TheatreiNQ Original Production! This play has been written for this company, for the company ensemble and for this magnificent building. The whole process for this ambitious production has been challenging from the beginning. From developing a new script based on the classic novel, designing four different sets for four different size rooms, directing each chapter in different styles including proscenium arch, in-the-round and traverse staging, turning each small room into a working theatre with lighting and audience seating, right through to choreographing the ushers to assist the audience movement throughout the building. I am so very thankful to the cast & crew for embracing every single challenge with enthusiasm and to the Griffin Group for offering us access to this building. It really has been a dream come true. To Joseph & Ron - I am so honoured to have had the opportunity to work with you both on creating these roles. Thank you for all your hard work and all your team work. You have both truly led from the front and made my job so much easier. You have my gratitude always. To Kellie, Arminelle & Chris - I am always more confident with you three around. Collectively, you are my coat of armour against all on-coming storms. Thank you for everything you do. To Brendan - Your sets are truly incredible and I am so grateful for all your encouragement, inspiration and advice in developing the script. You have my admiration and love always. To the Brabons & the Smiths - This has been a hard one. But you’ve been there from the beginning and we’ve seen all of it through together. As we always do. I truly am blessed to have you all in my corner. I love you guys.

xxx Terri
