Synopsis ACT I
ONCE UPON A TIME…
We are in Athens, and there’s going to be a Big Greek Wedding – but with a difference. Duke Theseus has just conquered the warrior queen Hippolyta, and now claims her as his reluctant bride. His announcement of the forthcoming solemnities is interrupted by Egeus. She is angry that her step-daughter Hermia will not marry Demetrius, but instead prefers Lysander. Under Athenian law, if she disobeys her step-mother, she has two choices - death or a nunnery. It’s tough love in old Athens. Left alone, Hermia and Lysander decide to flee Athens and take refuge with his aunt. They will make their escape at night via the woods. They confide their plan to Helena, Hermia’s bestest friend. Helena wants Demetrius for herself, and thinks the way to win him is to spill the beans on Hermia and Lysander’s elopement. It’s clear that everyone is going to end up in the woods…
WISH UPON A STAR…
Next we meet the Mechanicals, a group of local tradies, who are putting on a play for the Big Wedding. Nick Bottom, their lead actor, promises to give a performance to treasure. The play is chosen, the parts allocated, and the Mechanicals resolve to rehearse that night…. where else? The woods, of course!
INTO THE WOODS…
What the mortals haven’t taken into account is that the woods belong to the Fairies. Their king and queen, Oberon and Titania, are in the midst of a bitter custody battle over an orphan boy. Also, they took opposing sides in the recent battle between Theseus and Hippolyta. The quarrel has grown so nasty that it has upset the natural balance of the seasons. But Titania will not relinquish the boy, and Oberon decides she needs to be brought down. He tells his messenger, Puck, to find a special, enchanted flower, that has the power to make sleepers fall in love – and lust – with the first creature they see on waking. He will make a fool of Titania. Now the lovers start turning up – Demetrius, in hot pursuit of Hermia and Lysander, and Helena running after the scornful Demetrius. Oberon takes pity on Helena, and decides to help her get her man with the help of the enchanted flower.
ENCHANTED…
Next to arrive in the woods are Hermia and Lysander, on the run from the law. They settle down for a chaste night’s sleep. After all, as Hermia points out, they’re not husband and wife yet. Puck turns up with instructions to enchant the eyes of the man in ‘Athenian garments’ – he just doesn’t realise that Lysander is the wrong man. Lysander’s eyes are duly sprinkled with the magic flower, and Puck runs off convinced that he’s accomplished his mission. Now Demetrius and Helena arrive, but he still wants nothing to do with her. He runs off in search of the fugitives, just in time for Lysander to awaken and behold…Helena! Suddenly, Hermia is dumped and Helena is the object of his desire. Helena, for her part, thinks this is some sort of cruel joke, and refuses to believe him. They leave the clearing as Hermia awakes, baffled by Lysander’s disappearance.
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST…
Oberon’s plan is about to reach fruition. Titania settles down for the night with her fairies, and Oberon is able to charm her eyelids with the flower. Watch this space. The Mechanicals arrive for their midnight rehearsal. Puck sees them and can’t resist the chance to make some mischief. He puts an ass’s head on Nick Bottom whose mates run off in terror. Titania awakes and the first thing she sees is Bottom. It’s love at first sight.
ACT II TANGLED...
Oberon learns from Puck that Titania’s humiliation is complete – she has made herself a fool for love over the ass-headed Bottom. But there is a complication – of course. It soon becomes clear that it is Lysander, not Demetrius, who has been charmed by the flower. Oberon manages to rectify this, and suddenly Helena has two men after her. Now she is certain that she is the victim of a prank – even her friend Hermia is in on it. There is a massive quarrel. Oberon can see the whole situation has gotten completely out of hand. It has to be sorted – and before daybreak. Puck leads the duelling men into the darkness so he can charm their eyes with an antidote flower and reverse the spell.
THE LOVERS GRIMM...
Titania, infatuated with Bottom, is doting on his every whim. Oberon sees the sorry spectacle and decides enough is enough – he has made his point. He charms them to sleep and reverses the spell with the antidote flower. Titania awakes, horrified to learn that she has been sleeping with a mortal – and a weird looking one at that. However, she agrees to help Oberon cast a love charm on the sleeping lovers. Bottom awakes, changed back to his normal self, and struggles to find words that can do justice to the miraculous ‘dream’ he’s just had…
BABES IN THE WOODS...
So far, the only characters who haven’t turned up in the woods are the Athenian grown-ups, but here they come, looking for the lost foursome. The boys awaken, and the antidote has done the trick – each couple is now set to rights. Theseus overrules Egeus, and Hermia will be allowed to marry Lysander. The Big Greek Wedding has just gotten bigger – there will now be three happy couples taking their vows.
HAPPILY EVER AFTER...
The newlyweds arrive at the reception, which will feature a play, ‘A tedious brief scene of young Pyramus and his love Thisbe’. Nick Bottom and his fellow actors bring the house down with their coup de theatre. Unseen by the mortals, Titania and Oberon give their blessing to the happy couples. Puck offers the audience some parting words.
All’s well with the world.

WHO ARE WE? TheatreiNQ has been serving the Townsville community as a professionally driven theatre company for eight years led by leading actors Terri Brabon and Brendan O’Connor.
TheatreiNQ is committed to providing positive, professional and vibrant theatre experiences to regional Queensland through live productions, training opportunities and promotion of regional artists and works produced in the region.
THEATREiNQ ENSEMBLE Much like a dance company or orchestra, TheatreiNQ has a firm basis in the work of ensemble. We do not adopt the traditional theatrical meaning of this term, but instead, we look to the world of music, where an ensemble is “the degree of precision and unity exhibited by a group performing together.” It is this unity which we adhere to and strive for. While most Australian Theatre Companies operate from project to project, hiring freelance directors and actors for each production, TheatreiNQ are programming seasons to both challenge and celebrate the strengths of our core and extended ensemble. The unity of the TheatreiNQ Ensemble extends to behind the scenes. Our 40 member strong ensemble includes Stage Management, Technical Crew, Designers and Administration. The company is joined each year by Guest Professsionals from Metropolitan cities as well as local guest performers. This is not a new idea, in fact it was the same principle of Shakespeare’s own company but it is very rare to find such a company in Australia. Since launching as TheatreiNQ in 2010, the company has produced 26 full length productions, facilitated over 50 workshops and master classes, directed the Australian Festival of Chamber Music’s Families’ Concerts in 2013 and 2014 and were Drama Specialists for the Catholic Education Office’s Mulkadee Arts Festival from 2012 – 2014.
