SYNOPSISACT ONE
Prologue
During a night prayer ritual, a Soothsayer sees a vision prophesising that Julius Caesar should ‘Beware the Ides of March’.
Scene 1: He’s Become a God
Caesar’s victory is celebrated upon the Feast of the Lupercal when the Soothsayer approaches him with a warning.
Alone, Brutus and his mother, Servilia, discuss Caesar’s ambitious rise to power.
Cassius and Junia arrive and inform them that Mark Antony offered Caesar a crown. Upon Brutus leaving, Servilia instructs Cassius to throw letters into Brutus’ window praising him and fearing Caesar’s ambition.
Scene 2: A Strange Disposed Time
A huge thunderstorm erupts the night before the Ides of March. Cassius and Caska discuss their mutual fears of Caesar’s power before Cassius invites him into the plot.
Scene 3: O Conspiracy
Brutus resolves to kill Caesar before he becomes a tyrant, joining the conspirators on the condition that Caesar is treated respectfully in death and Antony is not harmed.
When alone, Brutus’ wife Portia confronts him and threatens to harm herself if he won’t reveal his worries. Secretly, their slave Artemidorus has overheard everything.
Scene 4: Cowards Die Many Times
On the Ides of March, Caesar’s wife Calpurnia urges him to skip the Senate due to ominous dreams and reports. He initially agrees, but Decius convinces him otherwise by claiming the Senate intends to crown him.
Scene 5: How Weak a Thing
Artemidorus is preparing to give Caesar a letter warning him of the conspiracy. Portia, spying the letter and fearing it’s contents, sends their servant Lucius to find Brutus.
Scene 6: Et tu, Brute?
On the steps of the Senate, the Soothsayer again tries to warn Caesar while Artemidorus begs Caesar read her letter, but both are ignored.
Inside the Senate, the conspirators all kneel before an unsuspecting Caesar, before revealing their knives and attacking him.
Brutus instructs Cicero to calm the crowd outside while Fulvia asks for a safe meeting between her husband, Antony, and the conspirators. Antony reqeusts to speak at Caesar’s funeral and is allowed on the condition he not speak ill of the conspirators.
When alone, Antony swears revenge for his murdered friend. Calpurnia informs Antony that Octavius, Caesar’s adopted heir, is on his way home to Rome.
Scene 7: An Honourable Man
Brutus addresses the citizens stating that Caesar was assassinated due to his excessive ambition and the risk of tyranny. He instructs the citizens to listen to Antony and departs.
Antony reminds the crowd of Caesar’s good deeds and love for Rome, displays his wounds, and reads his will which leaves wealth and property to the people of Rome. The crowd is incited to mutiny against the conspirators, leading to chaos. Just as Antony intended.

Cassius
Scene 1: A Slight Unmeritable Man

The new Triumvirate of Rome - Antony, Lepidus and Octavius - finalise a list of their enemies marked for execution. Fulvia is warned by the Soothsayer that Antony should stay away from Octavius.
Scene 2: I Am No Conspirator
Rome has become a city under siege. Cicero and Trebonius are killed in the street under orders by Octavius while Portia takes her own life.
Scene 3: Remember March
Servilia arrives in Brutus’ camp, informing them of the massacres in Rome as well as the death of Portia.
Cassius arrives and accuses Brutus of wronging him. Servilia scolds the men, demanding they hide their grievances from their soldiers. Alone, the argument escalates until Brutus relents, admitting that he is not himself. When Servilia bursts in on them, Brutus demands she leave the camp. Shocked by the outburst towards his mother, Brutus confesses to Cassius that the real reason for his anger is that Portia has killed herself out of fear.
Brutus suggests that rather than wait for Antony & Octavius to attack them, they should march toward them and force a battle at a town called Philippi.
While preparing to go to sleep, Brutus is confronted by the ghost of Caesar who tells him he will “see him again at Philippi”.
Scene 4: Words Before Blows
The leaders of the two armies meet before the battle, taunting each other. Cassius voices his fears of the many omens he has seen and the conspirators all agree to take their own lives rather than be captured by the enemy. Cassius bids his farewell to Brutus in case they never see each other again.
Scene 5: The Battle of Philippi
The Women of Rome can do nothing but pray to the Goddess of Warfare, Minerva.
Seizing an opportunity, Brutus gives the charge to attack Octavius’ legions, unknowingly leaving Cassius outnumbered by Antony’s forces. Wrongly believing the battle to be lost, Cassius forces Decius to end his life. Upon seeing Cassius’ lifeless body, Cinna takes his own life rather than face the Roman dishonour of outliving your General.
Brutus, having won the battle against Octavius, arrives to find both bodies and urges the remaining army to prepare for a second fight.
Scene 6: My Bones Would Rest
The Seraphim assemble - awaiting the outcome of the battle. Brutus’ army is defeated by Antony and Octavius’ forces. As the remaining soldiers flee, Brutus begs Metellus to hold his sword while he runs upon it. He refuses, leaving Brutus to provoke the oncoming soldiers into killing him rather than be captured.
Having achieved his vow of revenge for Caesar’s death, Antony declares Brutus “the noblest Roman of them all”. Octavius claims victory over the conspirators and reveals his desire to live up to his namesake and seize absolute power in Rome.

30 Seasons of Shakespeare Under The Stars

From the Director
It’s kind of hard to believe that Shakespeare Under the Stars is turning 30! The first decade was driven by the love of those who created it. A team who put so much energy into establishing something new, with the theory of “if you build it, they will come”. The second decade felt like a period of struggling to stay alive - but it did - thanks to the support of our loyal audience, rallying behind it, surviving a loss of funding, and tragically the loss of its founder, Jean-Pierre Voos.
Now this past decade has brought with it an even stronger sense of purpose and an ever growing sense of community and family. We are truly honoured to bring Shakespeare to life for regional North Queensland in a way that excites and ignites a love for his work and his words. This event really does belong to the ensemble who make it, the audience that support it and to the community who cherish it.
So Happy 30th Anniversary Shakespeare Under the Stars - from us - with all our love.
