Background

Edward III had seven sons, who were granted huge dukedoms forming the most powerful family dynasties in the realm House Mortimer, House Lancaster and House York. His heir, the Black Prince, died before his father, leaving his young son, Richard to be named King. Richard II ruled poorly and was deposed by his cousin, Henry of Lancaster - who claimed himself King Henry IV, overleaping his cousin, Mortimer, who had already been publicly named Richard’s heir. After a series of uprisings by the Mortimer/York clan, a peace prevailed under the reign of the warrior King Henry V. But he died young and his gentle son, King Henry VI could not control the warring factions. Loyalties were tested between the White Rose & the Red. The heir to both House Mortimer and House York - the Duke of York, raised an army, forcing the King to disinherit his own son and proclaim York heir to the crown. However, his wife, Queen Margaret of Anjou, vowed to make York pay for this insult and for the death of her lover, Somerset, throwing England into a bloody feud that literally tore the country apart.

The Brothers York

Act 1

Bent on avenging the death of her lover, Queen Margaret captures and brutally kills the Duke of York and his youngest son, Rutland. Fuelled by their father’s death, the York brothers (Edward, George and the ill-marked Richard) charge the battlefield of Towton and against all odds win the throne; Queen Margaret and her son flee to France and Edward takes the crown, bestowing upon his brothers the dukedoms of Clarence and Gloucester. The now delusional Henry VI is captured and brought before Edward. He spies a young boy, Henry Tudor Earl of Richmond and prophecies that the young boy will one day be King. Fearing for what this public prophecy might mean for his safety, Richmond’s mother, Margaret Beaufort sends the boy away to live in Brittany. To strengthen their political position, Warwick arranges for Edward to be married to the sister of the French King. But Edward’s hasty marriage to the recently widowed Elizabeth Grey throws the alliance with France into chaos. The insult is also felt by Warwick and Clarence and in retaliation, they join forces with Margaret to seek vengeance against Edward, throwing England back into civil war. The imprisoned Henry VI is visited by Richard who Henry believes is an omen bringing evil into the world. Richard proves him right by killing him and vowing to live up to his infamous reputation, he sets his sights on taking the crown for himself. The splintered York family meet on the battlefield where Clarence betrays Warwick and joins his brothers once more. The reconciled brothers of York defeat Warwick and kill Prince Edward in front of his mother, Queen Margaret. As his brothers celebrate their victory, Richard sees his opportunity to woo Warwick’s daughter Lady Anne on the battlefield. But the heavens have a plan - and the clock is ticking...

Act 2 The House of York has won the throne and life is one big party. But not everyone is content. The new Queen’s family have created a division between the York brothers, and too much of the good life has left King Edward IV very ill. With his sights now firmly set on the crown, Richard starts a rumour that sees George sent to the Tower and blames the orders on the Queen. Margaret, now a crazed shadow of her former self, curses them all and tries to make them see the danger in the evil Richard. Edward IV dies of grief after hearing of George’s murder, leaving the crown to his eldest son, Edward V. As they travel to bring the young King home, Richard and his cousin, the Duke of Buckingham, stage a coup and have the Queen’s brother, Earl Rivers, executed for treason. Under the guise of safekeeping, they convince the two young princes to stay in the Tower. Buckingham spreads the word that the princes are bastards, as was Edward himself and therefore as the last surviving son of York, Richard promptly has himself crowned the King of England. His coronation is barely over when news arrives that Richmond, now a young man, is gathering forces to challenge Richard’s throne. When Buckingham shows hesitation about killing the young princes, Richard violently turns on him. Betrayed and fearing for his life, Buckingham flees to the ever-growing force of Richmond in Brittany. The paranoid Richard realises that to keep his crown, he must get rid of his wife and marry his own niece, the Princess Elizabeth. As Richard musters his army to meet Richmond at Bosworth Field, Buckingham is freshly captured and executed. The night before the battle, Richard is haunted by the ghosts of his victims, while a secret marriage is conducted in the dead of night between Richmond and Princess Elizabeth. The fateful day arrives and the battle that would end the Wars of the Roses begins.

From the Director Thank you for being here with us. We are fully aware how lucky we have been over the past two years to be here presenting Shakespeare Under the Stars. It’s a tough time for the arts and events of this scale are even more of a gamble than ever before. I am very grateful to the entire TheatreiNQ team – the faces you see and the faces you don’t – for supporting the ride that has been The Wars of the Roses. To have so many of our ‘Bridge Kids’ home for this show is an incredible gift and in many ways completes a cycle for us as a company. So much has been said recently about how ‘unessential’ the Arts are, how our industry and the workers involved don’t matter. Well for everyone here tonight, that is not the case. Theatre matters to us - to those of us presenting it and to those of you supporting it. Theatre enlightens us and connects us like nothing else. Theatre starts conversations, challenges perspectives, invites us to look deep within ourselves, in real time, as a community, together, both audience and performers. We are not ‘stars’ – we ‘work’ in an industry. We are here to serve the Theatre and our Audience, because the Theatre has saved me more times than I care to count and I’ve seen it save others time and time again. We are all so grateful to you, our passionately loyal audience, for everything you say and do – you really do mean the world to us. And finally – to my boofhead – not only are you the hardest working person I know, you are quite simply a genius and an incomparable Richard III. I am a very lucky girl.
