About The Hullabaloo

About Creative Play

The Hullabaloo is an arts venue specially designed for children and families. It is home to theatre made specially for children and young people, free creative play, storytelling, workshops and much more.

The creative play spaces are free to use. The indoor creative play space is at the heart of the building and from 20 Sep - 24 Dec is home to Dreamland, a magical place for 0-4 year olds and their families. Please check our website for more details.

The venue is fully accessible and we have a family friendly café area, story corner, child friendly toilets and a buggy park. You can find The Hullabaloo on Borough Road in Darlington.

Access The Hullabaloo is a place for everyone.

We want all the children and families that visit us to have the best possible experience so if there is anything we can do to support your visit, particularly if you or your child has access requirements or you’re coming to the theatre for the first time, please contact us at info@theatrehullabaloo.org.uk with any questions.

The Hullabaloo is accessed at ground level. We have room for a number of wheelchairs within our theatre space and creative play spaces and a dropped counter is available at our Box Office.

Dreamland welcomes very young children and their grown-ups to take a journey above the clouds in a land full of beautiful sights and sounds.

Sun 17 October

Dreamland is a magical space for 0-4 year olds and includes a storytelling tepee full of lavender scented pillows and fairy lights, toddler beds which play lullabies and bubble tubes full of tropical fish.

Free • Mon - Sat 10am-2pm No need to book, just turn up.

Spaces are limited so at busier times there may be a short wait.

Join our mysterious and peculiar guide on a tour of a technological circus like no other. Feed your curiosity as you interact with the wonderfully brilliant inventions and prepare to be amazed and intrigued.

A 20-30 minute guided interactive exhibition for the whole family to enjoy.

Booking required.

This is a Pay What You Decide event, there is no obligation to pay until after you have been to the session.

You can then decide on a price which you think is suitable or that you can afford, based on your experience.

With a host of puppets, a working windmill, an avalanche of fruit and veg, this classic tail is the cat’s whiskers!

Would you trust a talking cat? You never know, he might turn you from a pauper to a prince just like the hero of this story, brought to vivid life on our incredible sloping stage.

Using smoke and mirrors and hidden trapdoors we’ll show you how this sure-footed feline fools both the King and the Ogre to take his master all the way to the top.

Join actor and storyteller, Chris Connaughton, for some frightfully good storytelling sessions as we celebrate all those things that go bump in the night this Hulla-ween at The Hullabaloo.

Give yourself a few chills and thrills as you help Chris to take some well-loved tales and give them a spooky twist.

Join us for some Hulla-ween fun perfect for your little monsters!

Brave our Hulla-ween Monster Mash for two hours of frightfully good activities including disco, messy play and crafts.

All activities take place in The Hullabaloo and you are free to move around each activity.

For your Take a Seat donation you will receive an engraved plaque bearing your name (or the name of your choice) and a message on the backrest of your chosen seat plus a commemorative certificate.

Seat sponsorship lasts for at least 10 years, and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Donations can be paid in one lump sum or can be paid across 10 monthly instalments.

Introducing toooB, a curious and friendly shapeshifting creature. She’s not quite sure where she’s landed but she’d love to meet and play with you. toooB is an enchanting wordless show for 6-24 month olds and their grown ups. A gentle sensory adventure with an original soundtrack, captivating movement and interactive fun and games; toooB is a perfect introduction to theatre and dance for the very young and includes a stay and play session with the performer.
