Join us for Hullabaloo in the Park, a fun-filled outdoor family festival packed with brilliant things to create, see and do together.

Taking place from 26-30 July 2023, the festival will transform Darlington’s South Park into a magical land full of fantastic activities - from live performance to messy play, storytelling to circus, audio adventures to crafting - and even a Beastie Boogie!

Ideally suited for your little bugs and beasties aged 0-10 years and all their family and friends, Hullabaloo in the Park is an explosion of fun and creativity for everyone to enjoy.

Hullabaloo favourite, storyteller Chris Connaughton, tells tales of naughty monkeys, foolish monkeys and a particularly wise monkey who gets the better of a very greedy crocodile!

A free, drop-in storytelling session suitable for little monkeys aged 4 years and above and their families and friends.

Swings and roundabouts features Jane and Dora, a mum and daughter circus duo who transform three ordinary park visits into extraordinary aerial spectacles.

After the performance, your little ones will have a chance to join in the fun and twirl on the aerial equipment.

This lively journey of sound and sensation welcomes children to freely explore and express themselves.

Join Percy and April as they introduce you to Birdy, hiding in his egg, waiting for Spring. Blow leaves off the tree, sleep under star blankets in Winter, and wake up for a butterfly party.

This show turns children into spontaneous performers, encouraging them to be enthusiastic and playful.

Taking Flight

Inspired by Darlington children’s own ideas, poetry and artworks, Hullabaloo in the Park is delighted to feature Taking Flight, a trail of willow sculpture birds and banners with audio poetry for you to discover within the trees at South Park.

Taking Flight has been developed across the summer term by BloominArt, a female-led community arts organisation based in Tees Valley, and Theatre Hullabaloo artists Claire rimington and Jilly Hargreaves. Creative Writer Emily Wiseman from Write up and rise Ltd is working with the children to create

Inspired by the wonders of the uk’s vibrant insect life right beneath our feet. With gentle guitar tunes and singing, kids will dance with Stag Beetles, fly with Tiger moths, frolic with Glow Worms, and laugh along with Woolly Bear Caterpillars.

This schools’ programme is part of In2, working with Year 6 pupils in Darlington, to give them access to creative activities and performances on the build-up to transition to secondary school.

Little Wonders

Little Wonders is Theatre Hullabaloo’s new commissioning programme which enables us to work with artists to develop a set of exciting new family-friendly performance or play experiences.

This year, we have selected three new Little Wonders as part of Hullabaloo in the Park. They are all very different, led by North East based artists and each a little wonder in their own right.

Have you ever seen a face in the bark of a tree? If you have, then chances are, you’ve been close to the elusive, mythical Perilieu!

Join Elswyth Eri, the Perileru expert in her shed and go on a journey of discovery to find these secretive creatures who protect our forests. Audio experiences are bookable or available to drop in for curious children to explore.

It’s just a shed. Or is it? Doors yawn and stretch open. Windows sigh and unwind. A washing line wiggles and unfurls. A chimney shakes and shimmies up to the sky… Watch as the shed unfolds and the secret life of Elswyth Eri and her quest to find the mythical Perilieu, tumbles out and all around. She’ll tell tales of her adventures & invite you to explore her unique inventions.

Both Elswyth’s Shed and Where Are You Perilieu are by Libellule Theatre.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to play amongst a Giant’s picnic? To stack the biggest cheese sandwich tower? To roll with sausages, rest under a lettuce leaf or jump in and out of doughnuts?

Artist Lynda Nelson has created a giant picnic with oversized food for supersized play potential. This is a free, drop-in play activity suitable for all ages. Bookable neurodiverse sessions available.

Embark on a journey with The Society for the Protection of magical Creatures to unearth mystical objects in South Park.

Gather your team of up to 8 (including one adult), grab your headphones and smartphone, or borrow ours as you take on your mission and report your findings.

Our finale event is free and un-ticketed so we’d love to see as many of you as possible in the park to help us finish this year’s Hullabaloo in the Park in style.

Fancy dress is optional, but free craft events on site throughout the week will provide plenty of opportunities to create a beastie mask - or feel free to make your own at home.

The Baghdaddies, a lively five-piece band, are set to take you and your family on a magical musical journey. Their music, an exhilarating mix of Eastern European melodies, ska, jazz, and Indian influences, delivered with sizzling brass and theatrical humour, will leave you dancing and laughing, all at the same time.
