A Word from the Chair This year, Theatre Works celebrates the 30th anniversary of its foundation and 25 years in our wonderful venue on Acland St in the heart of St Kilda. With the support of our funding bodies, generous sponsors, Melbourne’s arts community and you, our audience, the company has grown and changed while staying true to the ideal of making original, relevant, high quality contemporary theatre accessible to all. Our special mission is to support independent performing artists and companies, who are truly the engine room of the arts. At Theatre Works, we value our local links while we host and promote the very best of contemporary practice across drama, dance, physical theatre and circus. For 2010 our dedicated staff, Board members and expert

industry advisers have selected the most exciting program for your enjoyment. As well as seasons by industry hirers, we are proud to present our flagship company support programs Selected Works and In The Works, themed and curated short seasons and of course our year long birthday celebrations. Do join us for a warm welcome, great performances and excellent wine or coffee before and after the show – a feast for the body, heart and spirit. Yes, Theatre Works! Selected Works Program

In the Works Program

First introduced in 2004, the Theatre Works Selected Works Program was devised to assist and support independent companies in their endeavour to create new, exciting and cutting edge work. Each year, Theatre Works selects the best submissions and offers them the opportunity to realise an exciting public performance season.

This year, five new companies have been provided the opportunity for a week long creative development period in the Theatre Works space. Participants are encouraged to include an informal showing and feedback session at the end of the creative development. This year’s successful recipients include:

Kicking off the Theatre Works 2010 Selected Works season is the world premier of Nicola Gunn's At the Sans Hotel, a story that moves from sadness to humour, cruelty to tenderness, daylight to twilight. (p.6) In August, we see the return of Ignite Theatre with their new work Hedda, a brutal examination of six peoples’ attempt to find their ideal place in the world. (p. 7). Our third 2010 Selected Works season brings you an exciting new dance work by 2nd Toe Dance Collective. Something Blew explores the universal themes of love, modesty, sexuality and fidelity and the lifestyle choices we all make. (p.8) If Theatre's The Nightwatchman, by Daniel Keene completes the year’s program of 2010 Selected Works. The Nightwatchman is a moving, poetic and ultimately life-affirming ode to the human spirit and the memories that define us. (p.9)

In an old shabby hotel, strewn with familiar remnants, a woman pieces together the fragments of a terrible crime she may or may not have committed. In another room a woman is having a bath. And outside a German woman is wandering in the desert. A story that moves from sadness to humour, cruelty to tenderness, daylight to twilight. Nicola Gunn is forging a reputation as a maker of compelling and virtuosic theatre, making tragic and harrowing experiences quite funny.

Hedda is a brutal examination of six peoples’ attempt to find their ideal place in the world. Life and our decisions can lead us to the brink at any time. Hedda examines a timeless question fundamental to existence; how can we find individual purpose and happiness? From the acclaimed company who brought you Jet of Blood, 3 Short Absurd Works and A Dream Play. “Theatre that bores into your dreams.” THE AGE This is a 2010 VCE play list production.

“I would watch Nicola Gunn shell peas.” THE AGE “A breathtaking blend of satire and surrealism as if a Magritte painting had shuddered to life... Unforgettable theatre.” TIMES COLONIST

Something Blew is a response to current lifestyle choices we have noticed. As young people who are in the midst of sexual relationships and finding companionship, we were intrigued by the old English proverb “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue”. For this work we have explored the facets of what the colour blue represents; Purity, love, modesty and fidelity. Something Blew invites us into a series of complications within relationships regarding confusion about sexuality, perversity, isolation and inner-turmoil. Over the 60 minutes our seven dancers will unfold every portion of how modern society accepts sexual freedom, adultery and betrayal and how this contradicts, neglects and abuses the origins of the ancient saying.

Bill has lived a life amongst the rambling beauty of the old family home. Now he's gone blind, and his children Helen and Michael have returned for a few days to move him away. On the outside Bill is stoic, resigned to his fate, but inside he silently rages against the darkness. Drawn together in a garden full of echoes, the three discover tender memories of a shared past unwilling to release them. A moving, poetic ode to the human spirit and the memories that define us.

Theatre Works & Liquid Skin presents

Moving works 2010 After a hugely successful 2009 Moving Works season, Theatre Works and Liquid Skin continue their commitment to providing new development and presentation opportunities to independent movement artists. “MOVING Works is a platform for emerging and independent choreographers, encouraging a dialogue between artists and a growing audience for contemporary dance... The breadth of choreographic style on show in Moving Works makes for more than just great conversation fodder for the trip home.” “... In an age in which it is increasingly difficult for independent practitioners to get a look in, Moving Works created a performance structure within which the above could not only occur, but also, was a thoroughly entertaining night in the theatre. Theatre Works and all involved in each production, are to be congratulated. As for me, I'm already looking forward to Moving Works 2010.”

Translation Do we speak the same language? Drawing from the biblical story of the Tower of Babel and its attendant message of the inadequacies of communication, Translation examines the power of language, both verbal and physical. How is it possible to translate across language barriers? What happens when people miscommunicate and misread the body? Evolving our sensibility as an ensemble movement theatre company we will create the basis of a promenade style performance.

A woman stands in a door way. There is a loud rumbling and the walls around the door collapse. The woman now standing in a shaft of misty yellow light beckons us into her world. We follow and are taken on a journey that challenges our perception of the world as we understand it - because this reality is shaped by silence. We watch as woman teaches us about her unreal world and begins to shape a shared perception - a world where no words are needed and everything is understood.
