Summer Staycation: Airbnbs and VRBOs

When you live in Florida, it’s hard to find any other place that truly feels like a vacation – there’s a reason Floridians are often quoted saying “I live where you vacation.” But the best part about living here is that when you do crave some much-needed time away from your own home, you don’t have to go very far. In fact, you don’t even need to leave your own city to have the ultimate staycation. Instead of booking a run-of-the-mill hotel or searching endlessly for the right vacation home, we did the work for you. Here are some Airbnbs and VRBOs we stayed in and loved, so you can take the guesswork out of your next staycation.

The West Palm Treehouse

If you are craving something different from a beach vacation but don’t want to leave Palm Beach County, this unique find may be the ultimate place for your next trip. The West Palm Tree House is exactly what it says it is: a treehouse. The home is built around two gorgeous pine trees and can comfortably sleep two adults and two children. But it’s not just the home that makes this place a must stay. The prime location puts it close to some of the best restaurants in the area, including Coolinary Cafe and Leftovers Cafe, among many others in the Palm Beach Gardens/Jupiter area.

17
ACCOMMODATIONS staycation issue 18

Whether you want to spend your free time with your pets on Jupiter Dog Beach or catch a pre-season game at Roger Dean Stadium (the Miami Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals play here from February-April) you can do it all within close proximity to the home. And when you return from a day of exploring, you’ll be met with tranquility and calm at this tucked away accommodation. If you plan to keep things more relaxed during your staycation, guests have full access to the pool and jacuzzi on property.

If you’re bringing kids, the property has a zipline, play treehouse, and swings. The owners even offer a farm experience where kids (or adults!) can feed the goats, ducks, and peacock that that live just next to the treehouse.

The Juno Bungalow

If your idea of a staycation involves waking up to sounds of the ocean and ending your days washing off sun and sand in a hot shower, The Juno Bungalow is for you. These bungalows are old Florida perfection, with beachy decor, a super private feel, and direct access to the beach. If you are unfamiliar with the area, Juno Beach is a quiet, seaside town that has become known for not only its innate tranquility, but also the gorgeous beaches that host a ton of turtles during mating season. When staying at The Juno Bungalow, you can spend your days sipping coffee on the oceanview patio or walking the beach.

When you’re ready to explore, The Juno Bungalow is near the Loggerhead Marinelife Center and great state parks, including John D. MacArthur Beach State Park and The Nature Conservancy Blowing Rocks Preserve. The Jupiter Lighthouse, which is one of the area’s most famous landmarks, is also nearby. If you want to get a bit more adventurous, visit Blueline Surf & Paddle Co. for paddleboard lessons or Phil Foster Memorial Park Snorkel Trail for a day of snorkeling. When you get hungry, some of the best local restaurants are right nearby, including Food Shack, Guanabanas, and Ke’e Grill.

Lake Worth Waterfront

If you’re more of an urbanite and less of a sand-lover, this pick is for you. This Intracoastal-front property located in Lake Worth Beach is less than a mile from the sand. This is perfect for being surrounded by the ambiance of a beach vacation, without having to spend all day every day on the sand.

When the owners decided to let others in on their unique waterfront property, they thought of everything. By designing a simple and clean backyard and putting in wide windows, they have made it the ultimate spot for vacationers and staycationers alike. They provide kayaks and paddleboards to use on the Intracoastal, but if you choose to venture outside of the oasis of the home, their prime location puts them right near some of Lake Worth’s hottest spots. Head over to Mathews Brewing Company for great beer and live music, explore the downtown area and bar hop to the local dive bars, and eat at mainstays like Benny’s on the Beach or Old Key Lime House. After a day of exploring, eating, and drinking, you’ll be welcomed home to plush leather couches, a pool table, and a shower with more than 12 jet options.

Nomad Beach House

Nomad Surf Shop is the quintessential South Florida surf shop and became a famous destination after it opened back in 1968. With a true emphasis on keeping things local, the owners of Nomad Surf Shop decided to take things a step further, opening Nomad Beach House last November. “When we first purchased the house we thought how cool would it be for our Nomad customers to get the ‘real local’ feel,” they said. “We have so many customers who love our vibe so we figure we would make the house easy, simple, and beachy.” And they did just that – Nomad Beach House has surfboards and local photos lining the walls and with only steps to the beach (300 yards to be exact), the house makes spending your entire vacation at the beach a breeze.

The Surf Shop may be from the ‘60s, but the home is completely new. Renovated top to bottom, the beach house offers modern bathrooms and three full bedrooms, all outfitted with cozy, clean furniture.

31

The owners have paddleboards, surfboards and bikes readily available in the backyard, but they also encourage their guests to stop in at the Surf Shop for anything else they may need during their stay. After a day at the beach, you can take a quick trip over to Atlantic Avenue for dinner or keep things local at Sushi Simon Sweetwater, or Driftwood. Tired from the sun? They also offer a fully-stocked kitchen and grill for easy cooking.

SUN DEK BEACH HOUSE The Staycation Potential is Bright

Feelinglike you need an escape? Ditto that, my friend. While it might only be July, it’s been a long year. It’s time for a break. If you don’t have the funds or finances for a full-blown Euro trip, don’t think that all hope is lost. There is a fun little hotel right around the corner that is just screaming your name. Actually, it’s saying, “Pack the bathing suit, forget the rest.”

Even as a local, you might not know about the Sun Dek Beach House, which if that’s the case, then here’s your big, fat, alert to Google and book it. It’s practically one of the most hidden gems in the area, and perfect for the staycation of your dreams.

staycation issue
34 ACCOMMODATIONS
35
staycation issue 36 ACCOMMODATIONS

Built in 1964 by the Dekker family and opened as a hotel in 2014, this 17-room oasis is comfortably nestled on historic A1A between the Intracoastal and the Atlantic Ocean, halfway between Palm Beach and Delray Beach. So, literally, you get the best of both aquatic worlds. You can opt for a high-end dinner just North at Oceano Kitchen with world class shopping on Worth Avenue to follow, or an austere dining experience at The Butcher and The Bar that will still knock your swim fins off.

They offer studios, one-bedroom and two-bedroom suites to serve as a short-term vacation rental or an extended-stay rental depending on how long you’re planning on milking the staycation. They even consider their hotel as a “spare bedroom” for locals whose families want to visit but don’t have space in their home (wink).

Dream-worthy amenities include a heated saltwater pool, outdoor gazebo perfect for dining or happy hour, beach chairs and towels, outdoor barbecues, and fully stocked kitchens that include a blender and citrus juicer so you can make the perfect margarita.

One of the most unique parts about Sun Dek is that the beach is a stone’s throw away through a tree-lined path. It’s zen, it’s fun, it’s quick, and it’s safe for families. If you feel like being more productive than lying horizontal on the beach, you can also get SCUBA certified in the pool with Force-E Scuba.

Regardless if you need some solo time, some sexy time, or some family time, Sun Dek has it all. The rates fluctuate daily but they offer their lowest rates in the summer knowing that it’s the best time for locals to enjoy the beaches without the crowds.

37

“We host many kinds of guests from winter visitors looking to escape the cold, digital nomads who enjoy our full kitchens and short walk to the beach, to locals needing a staycation,” said Eileen Kahn, hotel manager, who notes that Sun Dek is known for its personalized service, clean rooms, and a team that goes above and beyond for their guests. “Families with children love our pool and outdoor shower. Large families book multiple rooms so they can get together in the courtyard, grill and dine in the pavilion, and be able to have their own space in their rooms.”

So yes, about now you’re picturing yourself in a bathing suit, holding your perfectly chilled marg, beach bag in hand with a book and reef-safe suntan lotion, heading out the door of your nicely chilled suite, ready to enjoy some fun in the sun. Life is good, people. Life. Is. Good.

Hacking Palm Beach Island for $100

Excluding Tax (We’re Not Miracle Workers)

Visiting Palm Beach Island can be tough if you’re not looking to drop a full paycheck on shopping, meals and excursions not that we don’t believe in a splurge every once in a while. So, we thought up an itinerary for spending a day on the island that is heaps of fun, without a heaping credit card statement. Don’t believe a party of two can enjoy a day on the island including breakfast, lunch and dinner for under $100? Read on, my friends.

First, make coffee at home sorry. It’s just not in the budget today.

Breakfast at Celis Juice Bar

Celis Juice Bar in West Palm Beach is a favorite spot for locals who enjoy eating fresh meals at reasonable prices. Celis has a secondary location on Palm Beach Island, serving everything from acai bowls to breakfast burritos to smoothies. We recommend splitting a bagel sandwich and getting two smoothies to start your day on the island.

Window Shopping on Worth Avenue

Worth Avenue is known around the world for it’s ritzy shopping. Inside the glass you’ll find displays donned in designer brands such as Gucci, Chanel and Bottega Veneta.

The trick with this is not getting too tempted. Browse the windows, maybe pop in a store or two, but don’t pull the trigger on any purchases. Let’s be real, do you really need those designer sunglasses?

43

Lunch at Buccan Sandwich Shop

Not to be confused with the ultra-luxury Buccan which was named Forbes Travel Guide’s “hottest spot” in Palm Beach Buccan Sandwich Shop is an offshoot in a more manageable price range. Around the corner from the parent Buccan, there’s a small takeout window. Utilize the shaded park across the street to eat your lunch.

Bike Ride to the Witch’s Wall

The Witch’s Wall, also known as Coral Cut, is a cut-through carved out of the stone that juts up each side. There are urban legends surrounding the walls a prominent one being that a witch is locked inside the wall. These days, it’s more Instagramable than anything.

Save yourself a buck and bring your bikes from home this is a staycation after all. A ride up Beach Road to the Witch’s Wall offers great Atlantic and Intracoastal views, leading you to the iconic photo spot. Just be sure to watch for cars while you’re perfecting your leading lines.

Dinner at Pizza Al Fresco

For dinner, keep it lax with a beach picnic. Split a Funghi pizza because mushrooms feel fancy from Pizza Al Fresco and snag some beer from the gas station. Gray’s Sunoco is the only gas station on the island, so it shouldn’t be hard to find. As far as the rest of the picnic, you’ll just have to head to the sand and find a nice spot to watch the clouds change colors as the sun sets. Picnic basket is optional. Do be sure to check the weather forecast before loves its evening rainfall.

Sand’s Hot, Water’s Not

GUIDE
staycation issue 48

These are some of our favorite ways to stay wet and get salty without having to lug your whole life to the beach every weekend. As it gets hotter and the sand starts to cause blisters again, you may be thankful for a few alternative options. Here are your options, in order of least to most wet — relatively.

PHOTOS BY BEN HICKS
49

Pontoon Cruise

This one’s more about getting boozy than getting out on the water, but hey, it’s the thought that counts. Whether you’ve got an outof-towner visiting, or you want a 360 degree view of the Jupiter Lighthouse, the Pontiki Cruise is a great way to spend a leisurely evening in Jupiter. It also makes a perfect pregame for dinner at any of Love Street’s dining options. Pontiki launches off the dock at U-tiki Beach. Make sure you grab a drink from U-tiki’s bar to enjoy during the cruise.

Kayaking

Kayaking is ranked less wet than jet skiing because we’re hoping you’re better than us at it (don’t ask). One of the best spots for kayaking in Palm Beach County is in Riverbend Park. You can rent a kayak inside the park at Jupiter Outdoor Center and launch right into historical Florida. You can also rent kayaks at John D. MacArthur Beach State Park. You can explore the estuary or make the trip to Munyon Island.

Rent Jet Skis

Renting a jet ski is that thing that constantly gets talked about, but rarely ever actually happens. This is your sign to finally bite the bullet and actually do it. There are a couple spots where you can rent them, it just depends on where you want to dart around. To ski in the Intracoastal or the open ocean? Quite the conundrum.

GUIDE
staycation issue 50

Paddleboarding

Are we starting to sound like a broken record with all this paddleboarding talk? It’s just really fun and our friends at Blueline Surf & Paddle Co. are really good at it. They have beginner classes, guided eco-tours, paddleboard yoga and more. This is the last time we’ll mention it. Though, that’s probably not the truth.

Snorkeling

Legally we can’t encourage you to bridge jump at Cato’s, so instead we’re endorsing snorkeling. Honestly, that’s more our speed anyway. This spot in the Jupiter Inlet somehow always has crystal clear water and is a bustling habitat of all kinds of species. There’s parking on the north side of the Bridge, but if that’s full your best bet is to park at the lighthouse and walk down the path on the south side. Blue Heron Bridge is also a legendary snorkeling spot you should definitely check out.

SUNSCREEN GUIDE

Choosing a sunscreen is like choosing a board: you want one that feels personally tailored to you. Whether you prioritize texture, environmental impact, application or scent we’ve compiled some picks that will keep you safe in the sun. All are cruelty free, dermatologist tested and meet Hawaii Reef Compliant Act 104 standards — which means they are free of ingredients that are damaging to our coral reefs.

Supergoop!

We like Supergoop! for their many different consistency options. Whether you want something invisible, something heavy duty, or something that does both, they’ve got you covered — literally. We recommend the Zincscreen for all you surfers who need something to stick, the Mineral Mattescreen for those who don’t want to feel, or look, like they just applied a thick coat of butter, and the PLAY Antioxidant Body Mist SPF 50 with Vitamin C Mist for allover quick and easy coverage.

COOLA

Vegan and Organic? Sign us up. Coola is committed to their Farm to Face mission: knowing where and how the ingredients are harvested. Thankfully for all of us, this leads to amazing products. We like their face sticks for the convenience. The fragrance-free Mineral Organic Sunscreen Stick SPF 50 is a classic choice, but if you’re looking to branch out, the Refreshing Water Hydration Stick Organic Face Sunscreen SPF 50 is a new product in their lineup that’s worth a try. It was recognized in the Men’s Health Grooming Awards as an innovative product that’s actually worth the hype.

Sun Bum

Sun Bum is a brand that you SoFlo beach bums are probably already familiar with considering it’s in almost every surf shop. That’s because it’s a classic. Their repertoire has expanded far past just sunscreen in the more than a decade they’ve been in the business. Signature SPF 50 Tinted Sunscreen Face Stick is a product you may not be familiar with, though. We like it for quick application before being in the water. It blends in well, but sticks on like zinc.

Vacation

This brand is known for the iconic smell of their lotion. It’s been bottled as perfume and squeezed into air fresheners as well. The scent combines iconic summertime notes like coconut and banana, but they didn’t stop there. For good measure they added in notes of swimsuit lycra, pool water and pool toy. Somehow it works. The Classic Lotion SPF 30 will have you turning heads and blocking rays. The After Sun Gel will aid in the recovery of letting that sentiment go to your head.
