Festival De Keuze brengt kunstenaars van over de hele wereld elf dagen samen in Rotterdam. Met hun voorstellingen doen ze een symbolische en soms concrete handreiking om in gesprek te gaan met ons, het publiek. Ik kan geen genoeg krijgen van al deze verhalen en beelden. Het verhaal uit hun deel van de wereld vertelt me iets over mezelf en de wereld waarin ik leef. Voor mij zijn deze perspectieven onmisbaar, omdat we dezelfde wereld delen. Er is dit jaar geen alomvattend thema. We geven je geen wachtwoord om toegang te krijgen tot de voorstellingen: ze spreken voor zich. We nodigen je uit zelf te ervaren dat de kunstenaars je iets kunnen vertellen over jou en jouw wereld. Eindeloos optimistisch zet Festival De Keuze zich in voor haar kunstenaars en publiek. We geloven in de uitgesproken vormen die deze kunstenaars kiezen en met hen verlangen wij naar een gevoel van verbondenheid. Tijdens het festival zijn er voldoende gelegenheden - in voorstellingen en daarbuiten - om samen te komen en werelden te delen. Welkom bij Festival De Keuze!

For eleven days Festival De Keuze brings together artists from all over the world to Rotterdam. With their performances, they offer a symbolic and sometimes actual helping hand to have a dialogue with us, the audience. As a member of the audience I can not get enough of all these stories and images. Stories about their part of the world tell me something about myself and the world I live in. For me, these perspectives are indispensable, as we all share the same world. This year, there is no comprehensive theme. We will not provide you with a password to gain access to the performances: they speak for themselves. We invite you to discover, firsthand, that the artists can tell you something about yourself and the world you live in. With endless optimism, Festival De Keuze is committed to its artists and audience. We believe in the distinct forms that these artists have chosen and, together with them, we yearn for a sense of belonging. During the festival, there will be numerous opportunities – in performances and beyond – to come together and share our worlds. Welcome to Festival De Keuze!

Festival De Keuze’s opening performance is a celebration of the senses

Wat hebben een toespraak van Bill Clinton, een bericht op een antwoordapparaat, de dialogen van Louis de Funès, een extract uit South Park, de flow van Eminem of Lil Wayne, een advertentie voor shampoo en gesprekken opgenomen in een café op de hoek met elkaar gemeen? Ze vormen allen de ingrediënten voor de partituur van een buitengewone ‘stemmenvoordracht’, ontsproten uit het geniale brein van de Franse theatermaker Joris Lacoste. Flarden van nieuwsberichten, interviews en politieke toespraken worden in Suite N°1 ‘ABC’ door een meertalig koor (elf van hen zijn Rotterdammers) vol vuur, energie en humor ‘opgevoerd’. Dit eigenzinnige koor maakt in deze hoogst originele ode aan het gesproken woord de rijkdom van alledaagse taal tastbaar. De openingsvoorstelling van Festival De Keuze is dit jaar een feest voor de zintuigen.

What could a speech by Bill Clinton, a message on an answering machine, the dialogues of Louis de Funès, a piece of South Park, the flow of Eminem and Lil Wayne, a shampoo advertisement and conversations recorded in a café on the corner have in common? They all form the ingredients for the score of an exceptional ‘voices recital’, which sprung from the brilliant brain of French theatre-maker Joris Lacoste. In Suite N°1 ‘ABC’, fragments of news items, interviews and political speeches will be ‘staged’ full of fire, energy and humour by a multilingual choir (eleven of these singers are citizens of Rotterdam). In this highly original ode to the spoken word, this nonconformist and unique choir renders the richness of everyday language tangible. This year, the opening performance of Festival De Keuze will be a celebration of the senses.

Human Requiem is niet zomaar een versie van het beroemde werk Ein Deutsches Requiem van Johannes Brahms: het betreft een grootse theatrale enscenering door Berlijnse grootheden Jochen Sandig en Sasha Waltz. Brahms schreef zijn requiem in de eerste plaats als troost voor de levenden en niet als een dodenmis voor de overledenen. Hij wilde ons leren leven met onze sterfelijkheid. Voor de dood zijn we allemaal gelijk. Het was de droom van Sandig en Waltz dit werk als overweldigende belevenis tastbaar te maken. Daarom wordt voor deze speciale gelegenheid onze Grote Zaal helemaal leeggehaald, waardoor het onderscheid tussen podium en tribune verdwijnt. Je wordt letterlijk omringd door de zangers van het vermaarde Rundfunkchor Berlin, door enkele solisten en twee pianisten. Human Requiem is een ongekende totaalervaring die in de geest van Brahms in het teken staat van het leven.

Human Requiem is not simply a version of Johannes Brahms’ famous work Ein Deutsches Requiem: this is essentially a grand dramatic staging by the Berlin giants Jochen Sandig and Sasha Waltz. Brahms wrote his requiem primarily as a comfort for the living and not as an elegy for the dead. He wanted us to learn to live with our mortality. Death is equal for everyone. For Sandig and Waltz, it was a dream to make this work tangible as an overwhelming experience. Therefore, for this special occasion, our Grote Zaal (main auditorium) will be emptied completely, making the distinction between stage and stand disappear. You will be literally surrounded by the singers of the renowned Rundfunkchor Berlin, and by some soloists and two piano players. Human Requiem is an unprecedented overall experience, which, in the spirit of Brahms, will be centered around life.

Ear-catching dance marathon on the Schouwburgplein

Voor Yes Sir, I Can Boogie transformeert het Schouwburgplein voor één avond tot een dansvloer op het dek van een schip. Dertig stijldanskoppels uit Rotterdam gaan de strijd aan in een dansmarathon van ruim vier uur! Wie maakt de vier uur vol en wie niet? Filmcollectief Zapruder geeft op deze manier wel een heel bijzondere reflectie op de economische crisis. Het één na het andere koppel verlaat de dansvloer als ratten die het schip verlaten. Volgens een eeuwenoude volkswijsheid maken ratten zich als eerste uit de voeten als een ramp hun leefgebied bedreigt. Hoewel er nog nooit bewijs is geleverd van deze paranormale begaafdheid, weten we dat ratten zijn uitgerust met een geweldig gevoelig oor, waarmee ze het gekraak, het gesis en de hoge en lage frequenties in de geluiden die hen omringen uitstekend kunnen waarnemen. Op het plein worden de dansers in deze uitputtende eliminatie geconfronteerd met veel zweet en de harde realiteit van survival of the fittest. De omstanders horen enkel hun adem, de voetstappen en het geritsel van de kleding als een soundscape die live door twee muzikanten wordt gemixt.

For Yes Sir, I Can Boogie, the Schouwburgplein will transform, during one night, into a dance floor on the deck of a ship.Thirty ballroom dance couples from Rotterdam will compete with each other during a dance marathon of more than four hours. Who will complete these four hours and who will not? In this way, film collective Zapruder provides quite a peculiar reflection on the economic crisis. One after another, the couples leave the dance floor, like rats leaving a ship. According to an age-old conventional wisdom, rats are the first to take to their heels when their habitat is threatened. Although no proof was ever furnished for this paranormal talent, we do know that rats are equipped with very sensitive ears, with which they can perfectly perceive any crack or hiss, and high or low frequencies in the sounds surrounding them. In this exhaustive elimination on the square, the dancers are confronted with a lot of sweat and the harsh reality of the survival of the fittest. The bystanders can only hear their breath, the footsteps and the rustling of the clothes, provided as a soundscape that is mixed by two musicians in a live performance.

Viejo, Solo y Puto is een reis naar het leegste deel van de nacht. Een medisch vertegenwoordiger is met zijn vrienden, twee travestieten, op bezoek bij twee broers die een apotheek in een achterbuurt van Buenos Aires runnen. Met lauwe biertjes, koude pizza’s en allerlei chemische substanties proberen ze de middelmaat van hun leven te vergeten. Achter het plezier en de uitbundigheid van het feestje doemt echter de dagelijkse strijd tegen armoede en uitbuiting op. In een dreigende atmosfeer van geheime geschiedenissen en sluimerend geweld krijgen we een inkijkje in de levens van deze dolende mannen. De virtuoze acteurs brengen hen met uitmuntend en gedetailleerd spel tot leven. De vlijmscherpe regisseur Sergio Boris is de laatste jaren gangmaker van een nieuwe generatie Argentijnse theatermakers. Viejo, Solo y Puto is a journey to the emptiest part of the night. A medical representative and his friends, two transvestites, are visiting two brothers, who run a pharmacy in one of the slums in Buenos Aires. Enjoying lukewarm beers, cold pizzas and all sorts of chemical substances, they try to forget the mediocrity of their lives. However, behind the pleasure and exuberance of the party, the everyday fight against poverty and exploitation is tangible. In a threatening atmosphere of secret histories and smouldering violence, we are provided with an insight into the lives of these wandering men.The virtuoso actors bring them to life with their excellent and detailed play. In recent years, the razor-sharp director Sergio Boris has been the driving force of a new generation of Argentinean theatremakers. His hyper-realistic theatre shows an unpleasant reality, in which hope and desires are in conflict with their harsh lives in the margin of society.

Geloof je eigen ogen niet in deze bizarre mix van theater en dans Dé festivalverrassing van afgelopen seizoen komt naar Rotterdam. África is een bizarre en overdonderende theaterervaring over het onmogelijke. Samen met zeven andere spelers onderzoekt Luis Biasotto op de speelvloer een aantal onmogelijk te beantwoorden vragen. Hoe kan ik een ander zijn? Hoe kan ik opnieuw beginnen? Hoe kan ik onzichtbaar worden op het podium? Het levert scènes op die zich niet laten beschrijven, maar die even fragmentarisch zijn als bizar en even geestig als fascinerend. Luis Biasotto studeerde in Argentinië zowel voor regisseur als choreograaf en kent daardoor beide werelden goed. Zijn voorstellingen zijn een bijzondere, prijswinnende mix van dans, performance en theater.

África is a bizarre and overwhelming theatre experience about the impossible. On the stage and together with seven other players, Luis Biasotto investigates a number of questions that are impossible to answer. How can I become someone else? How can I start all over? How can I turn invisible on the stage? All this provides scenes that can hardly be described, but which are just as fragmented as bizarre, and just as funny as fascinating. Luis Biasotto studied in Argentina to become both director and choreographer and therefore he has good knowledge of both these worlds. His performances are an extraordinary, award-winning mixture of dance, performance and drama.

The Myth of the Great Transition Belgisch woordkunstenaar biedt hoop in bange dagen Het is wel duidelijk dat we niet langer kunnen geloven in de mythe van ‘de vooruitgang’. Van ecologische rampen tot meer sociale ongelijkheid, we hebben het allemaal over onszelf uitgeroepen door te denken dat we de wereld volledig naar onze hand konden zetten. Maar is de tijd werkelijk gekomen om afscheid te nemen van al onze mythes en idealen? Is onze samenleving zo uitvoerig gedetermineerd dat we geen behoefte meer hebben aan verhalen om door te vertellen aan onze kinderen? Belgisch woordkunstenaar Pieter De Buysser creëert voor ons een nieuwe mythe, de hoopvolle mythe van de Grote Omwenteling. Daartoe brengt hij emeritus-hoogleraar van de Reykjavik Universiteit Dr. Hallgrimmvijhalmsson ten tonele, nu 94 jaar oud. Deze eminente onderzoeker was zelf getuige van de geboorte van deze mythe van de Grote Omwenteling. De Buysser doet het beeldrijke verslag van dit wonderlijke sprankje ochtendlicht aan de duistere horizon.

Belgian wordsmith offers hope in these anxious days It is quite obvious that we can no longer believe in the myth of ’progress’. Varying from ecological disasters to more social inequalities; we brought this knowingly on ourselves by thinking that we could impose our will on the world completely. However, is it really time to say goodbye to all our myths and ideals? Is our society determined so comprehensively that we are no longer in need of stories that we can pass on to our children? Belgian wordsmith Pieter De Buysser will create a new myth for us: the hopeful myth of the Great Transition. For this purpose, he brings to stage emeritus professor of the Reykjavik University Dr. Hallgrimmvijhalmsson, who is now 94 years old. This eminent researcher himself has witnessed the birth of this Great Transition myth. De Buysser will give an ornate report of this peculiar spark of morning light on the dark horizon.

Stel dat je een diepgaande relatie met een vriendelijke geldschieter ontwikkelt, zodat je niet langer afhankelijk hoeft te zijn van kunstinstellingen, programmeurs, fondsen en de politiek van het Ministerie voor Cultuur… Met dit romantische droomscenario begint de charmant-naïeve Maike Lond haar zoektocht naar een nieuwe mecenas, naar iemand die haar wil steunen in het maken van haar werk. Samen met beeldend kunstenares Kaja Kann schrijft ze brieven aan de rijkste mannen van Estland en probeert ze hen te paaien met al haar charme en behendigheid. Het brengt haar zelfs op de nationale televisie. Perhaps All the Dragons 30 bijzondere verhalen, honderden verschillende voorstellingen Een bekende pianist beseft op het podium dat ze het verkeerde concerto heeft ingestudeerd. Een neurochirurg verwisselt hoofd en lichaam van twee levende apen. In Japan zijn er 700.000 mensen die leven als hikikomori (een soort kluizenaar) en zich voor jaren hebben opgesloten op hun slaapkamer. Het Vlaamse multidisciplinaire gezelschap BERLIN verzamelde deze en 27 andere merkwaardige verhalen en feiten en maakte er dertig gefilmde monologen van die schijnbaar niets, maar eigenlijk alles met elkaar te maken hebben. Aan een ronde tafel met dertig televisieschermen in de Centrale Bibliotheek van Rotterdam krijgen dertig bezoekers deze verhalen één-op-één te zien. Je ziet vijf verhalen, dus voor iedereen is de voorstelling anders en gaan de verschillende verhalen een eigen, unieke verbinding met elkaar aan.

30 unusual stories, hundreds of different performances Onstage, a well-known piano player realizes that she has practised the wrong concerto. A neurosurgeon switches the head and body of two living monkeys. In Japan, there are 700,000 people who live as a hikikomori (a sort of hermit) and have locked themselves up in their bedrooms for years. The Flemish, multidisciplinary theatre company BERLIN has collected these and 27 other remarkable stories and facts, and has turned them into thirty filmed monologues, which apparently seem to have nothing to do with each other, but actually fit together perfectly. Sitting at a round table with thirty television screens in Rotterdam’s Centrale Bibliotheek (Central Library), thirty visitors can watch these stories, one after another. They are offered five stories, so the performance is different for everyone and thus the various stories all enter into their own unique connection.

Energieke ‘danse macabre’ met wortels in Afrikaanse bodem Samen met zes Afrikaanse dansers uit verschillende landen maakt de Fransman Olivier Dubois een indringende dansvoorstelling over onze sterfelijkheid. Samen gaan ze op zoek naar de ziel van de wereld en naar een manier om te bestaan. Want bij het afscheid weegt het lot soms zwaar. Zes dappere mannen dansen een bezielde dodendans, maar dan wel eentje die bruist van het leven. Een energieke, hypnotiserende danse macabre die je niet snel los laat. Als hét enfant terrible van de Franse eigentijdse dans schuwt Olivier Dubois (die zijn sporen als danser verdiende bij onder anderen Jan Fabre en Sasha Waltz) de confronterende thema’s of beelden niet. Meer nog dan om het ontwikkelen van een originele bewegingstaal is het hem te doen om het aansnijden van controversiële thema’s die we als samenleving te vaak uit de weg gaan, zoals genderkwesties, seksualiteit en geweld. Later dit seizoen is Olivier Dubois in de Rotterdamse Schouwburg te zien met Tragédie.

Six brave men are dancing an impassionate dance of death, but certainly one that brims over with life. An energetic, hypnotizing dance macabre that will not easily let you escape. Being the enfant terrible of French modern dance, Olivier Dubois (who has won his spurs as a dancer with people such as Jan Fabre and Sasha Waltz) does not shy away from any confronting theme or image. For many years now, dancer and choreographer Rita Vilhena has been working from her base in Rotterdam with leading artists from various countries, such as Meg Stuart, Ivo Dimchev, Mohamed Shafik, Ugo Dehaes and Mor Shani. Each time, she challenges herself to find new forms of movement, making the body communicate with the audience as directly as possible. For Emergency Plan, she went all the way to Brazil. She became fascinated by the body movements she observed during the rituals of the Santo Damie and Candomblé religions. The combination of singing, dance, music and offerings, inspired her to make this performance. Instead of a constructed unity, Rita Vilhena is in search of a real meeting between you and her performers.

Welke kennis geven generaties aan elkaar door? Dat is de vraag die aan de basis ligt van Willingness to Will. In deze prachtige, ingenieuze theater- en dans performance heeft de Portugese choreografe Cláudia Dias het over de manier waarop mensen en samenlevingen kennis verwerven en daardoor groeien en sterker worden. Voor je ogen transformeert het podium tot een territorium, een land, haar land: Portugal. Dias maakt een reis door tijd en ruimte naar mogelijke bestemmingen en denkbare toekomsten. Het pad dat zich uitstrekt naar noord en zuid, het centrum en de periferie, kent zowel persoonlijke als collectieve dimensies. What sort of knowledge do generations pass on to each other? This question forms the basis of Willingness to Will. In this splendid, ingenious drama and dance performance, Portuguese choreographer Cláudia Dias discusses the way in which people and societies gain knowledge and thus further develop and become stronger. Right before your eyes, the stage transforms into a territory, a country, her country: Portugal. Dias goes on a journey through time and space to any possible destination or conceivable future. This path that stretches out to north and south, to the centre and the periphery, shows both personal and collective dimensions. Eventually, she comes to the conclusion that there is only one possible answer: return to the here and now. With both her feet firmly in the sand, Dias draws lines over the world, trying to illustrate the links between us, the world and its immense history.

Two theatre-makers, Wunderbaum’s Marleen Scholten and De Veenfabriek’s Lizzy Timmers, have become modern nomads. Travellers in search of an ever-changing view and perspective. For The House they have actually toured around in a moveable house, which was designed for them by the architects of the leading firm ZUS. Breivik’s Statement Controversiële theatervoorstelling over de ideeën van een massamoordenaar In Breivik’s Statement komt de Noorse extreemrechtse terrorist en massamoordenaar Anders Breivik aan het woord. De Zwitserse regisseur en oprichter van The International Institute of Political Murder Milo Rau ensceneerde het pleidooi dat Breivik op 17 april 2012 hield in het gerechtshof van Oslo. In dit pleidooi licht Breivik zijn misdaad toe en beschrijft hij zijn theorieën over de teloorgang van Europa als gevolg van immigratie en multiculturalisme. Zijn verklaringen werden ongeschikt verklaard voor publieke vertoning en zijn niet te zien geweest op televisie. Het bevreemdende karakter en de draagwijdte van de betekenis van dit document zette Rau aan om het in zijn geheel aan je voor te schotelen. Hij daagt je uit de strijd aan te gaan met de bekrompenheid en de tegenstrijdigheden in Breiviks argumentatie. Rau laat actrice Sacha Ö. Soydan de rol van Anders Breivik vertolken. De voorstelling eindigt met een debat waarin Milo Rau en Sacha Ö. Soydan spreken onder leiding van Chris Keulemans met kunstenaar Jonas Staal en Breivik deskundige Liesbeth van der Heiden over de vorm en het gedachtegoed van de voorstelling.

Controversial theatre performance about the ideas of a mass murderer In Breivik’s Statement, the Norwegian ultra-right terrorist and mass murderer Anders Breivik is allowed to speak. Milo Rau, Swiss director and founder of The International Institute of Political Murder, has staged the plea made by Breivik on 17 April 2012 in the court of Oslo. In this plea, Breivik explains his crime and pictures his theories about Europe’s decline due to immigration and multiculturalism. His explanations were deemed unsuitable for public broadcasting and have never been shown on television. The alienating character and the implications of the meaning of this documented text inspired Rau to present this as a whole to you. He challenges you to combat the narrow-mindedness and contradictions in Breivik’s argumentation. Rau has cast the actress Sacha Ö. Soydan in the role of Anders Breivik. The performance ends with a debate, during which Milo Rau and Sacha Ö. Soydan will discuss the form and ideology of the performance with artist Jonas Staal and Breivik expert Liesbeth van der Heiden, all this under the guidance of Chris Keulemans.

The Moscow Trials Pussy Riot-proces door ogen van eigenzinnig theatermaker Festival De Keuze introduceerde Milo Rau vorig jaar in Rotterdam op het Schouwburgplein met de installatie The Moscow Trials. Dit jaar tonen we de gelijknamige filmdocumentaire die hij maakte van het omvangrijke project waarin Rau het Pussy Riot-proces liet naspelen. Dit proces leidde in 2012 tot wereldwijde verontwaardiging. In The Moscow Trails werden ‘acteurs’ uit het echte leven (kunstenaars, politici, kerkleiders, burgers en advocaten) samengebracht in een fictieve rechtbank in Rusland. In deze ‘processhow’ werden de rol en de grenzen van kritische kunst bepleit. De Russische overheid kreeg er lucht van en bestormde de opnames en Rau kreeg een reisverbod. De film The Moscow Trials documenteert het project en werpt een licht op de historische en politieke achtergrond. Raak in anderhalf uur op de hoogte van de complexe, culturele strijd tussen de kunstenaar, de kerk en de politiek in het Rusland van nu. Pussy Riot trial through the eyes of a unique theatre-maker Last year, Festival De Keuze introduced Milo Rau in Rotterdam on the Schouwburgplein with his installation The Moscow Trials. This year, we will show the filmdocumentary with the same name, which Rau created around his extensive project during which he allowed the Pussy Riot-trial to be reenacted. Worldwide, this trial caused public indignation in 2012. In The Moscow Trials, ‘actors’ from real life (artists, politicians, church leaders, citizens and lawyers) were brought together in a fictitious court in Russia. In this ‘trial show’, the role and limits of critical art were argued. The Russian government got wind of this and stormed the shooting; Rau was given a travel ban. The film The Moscow Trials documents the project and sheds light on the historic and political background. Learn in one and a half hours about the complex, cultural combat between artists, church and politics in today’s Russia. And renew your acquaintance with the visions and ideas of one of the most important European theatremakers of this time. En nu je er toch bent, ben je ook bereid om voor hen te betalen? Oude bekende Kornél Mundruczó keert terug naar Rotterdam met een tragikomedie vol zwarte humor in een indrukwekkend decor. Due to the cheerful costumes and operetta music, Dementia appears to be lighter in tone than Mundruczó’s previous performances such as Hard to be a God and Frankenstein Project, which were on stage during earlier editions of Festival De Keuze. However, ultimately this masterpiece proves to be equally disturbing in essence. The Hungarian stage and film director enjoys making the audience face facts that society would prefer to ignore.

Motel Mozaïque-programmeur Harry Hamelink nodigde daarnaast twee bands uit met heel jonge muzikanten van Rotterdamse en Kasterlese (B) bodem om de Kleine Zaal voor twee avonden om te toveren tot dé plek voor het ontmoeten van nieuw talent.

During Festival De Keuze, you can enjoy live music almost every day. Composer and singer Roald van Oosten has composed a free programme with kindred musicians who will subsequently transform the Hal (foyer) of the Rotterdamse Schouwburg into an intimate living room, a lounge and a ballroom with their wide range of music. The programme will perfectly fit in with the festival evening. Additionally, Motel Mozaïque programmer Harry Hamelink has invited two bands, consisting of very young musicians from Rotterdam and Belgian Kasterlee, to transform the Kleine Zaal into the place to meet new talent during two nights.

In de beginjaren van het beroemde Nederlands platenlabel Excelsior Records (halverwege jaren negentig), waren er een paar inmiddels legendarische indiebands die het Nederlandse muzieklandschap blijvend veranderden: Johan, Daryll-Ann en… Caesar. Met Caesar bereikte zanger en gitarist Roald van Oosten grote hoogten. Maar daarmee was het niet gedaan. Roald maakte sindsdien avontuurlijke muziek voor films, televisieprogramma’s, theatervoorstellingen en voor vele muzikale samenwerkingsprojecten. Tijdens Festival De Keuze stelt hij het muziekprogramma samen en treedt hij zelf ook op.

In the early years of famous Dutch record label Excelsior Records (in the mid-nineties), there were a few, by now legendary, indiebands which have changed the Dutch musical landscape permanently: Johan, Daryll-Ann and… Caesar. With Caesar, singer and guitar player Roald van Oosten reached great new heights. However, that was just the beginning. Since then, Roald has made adventurous music for films, television programmes, theatre performances and many joint musical projects. During Festival De Keuze, he will compose the music programme and he will also perform.

Actually a very misleading name for this band. Beginners is formed by a group of familiar faces whom we have seen before in successful bands such as Johan, Caesar, Scram C Baby and Hospital Bombers. Violist Susanne Linssen has gathered these talents around her to introduce her beautiful and powerful pop songs to the world, such as This Is Where I Got Off, which was published earlier this year. Moss fans already have had the pleasure to see Beginners as the support act of that band in the Dutch clubs. The rest of us will have to wait until September, as then their debut album September Sunburn will be published, and when of course Festival De Keuze will take place!

47 Djurre de Haan is een veelzijdig man. Hij maakte muziek met vele Nederlandse grootheden, speelde in de theatervoorstelling Alleen op de wereld (ook in de Rotterdamse Schouwburg), schreef filmmuziek en speelt alweer bijna tien jaar lang de Nederlandse podia, festivals, intieme huiskamers en andere wonderlijke locaties plat als Awkward I. Het mag geen geheim meer zijn, met Awkward I heeft Festival De Keuze een van de beste songwriters van het land in huis.

Djurre de Haan is a versatile man. He has made music with many Dutch celebrities, has played in the theatre performance Alleen op de Wereld (a performance based on Hector Malot’s Sans Famille, also in the Rotterdamse Schouwburg), has written film music and, for almost ten years now, has toured the Dutch stages, festivals, intimate living rooms, and other unusual sites, to floor the audience as Awkward I. It should no longer be a secret, with Awkward I, Festival De Keuze has succeeded in having one of the best song writers of the Netherlands in house.

Snowapple De Amsterdamse folkband Snowapple bestaat uit de uiterst talentvolle muzikanten Una, Laurien en Fanny. Alle drie de dames hadden succesvolle muzikale carrières voordat ze Snowapple startten. Laurien was internationaal actief als operazangeres, Una zong jazz met invloeden uit de wereldmuziek en Fanny is klassiek opgeleid. Los van elkaar speelden ze op Glastonbury, in het Bimhuis en in het Concertgebouw. Snowapple begon klein met het samen zingen van oude folksongs aan de keukentafel. Algauw werden er eigen nummers gecomponeerd en gezamenlijk gearrangeerd op onder andere banjo, glockenspiel en accordeon. Nu staat er een volwaardig ‘multi-instrumentaal zangspektakel’ waarmee ze - na een uitgebreide Europese tournee - in september Rotterdam aan doen. Amsterdam folk band Snowapple consists of the extremely talented musicians Una, Laurien and Fanny. All three of these ladies have had a successful musical career before they started with Snowapple. Laurien had been active internationally as an opera singer, Una was singing jazz with influences from world music, and Fanny is trained as a classical musician. Independently, they have performed at Glastonbury, in the Bimhuis and in the Concertgebouw. Snowapple started as a game: singing old folk songs together, sitting at the kitchen table. But soon they started to compose their own songs, and together they arranged them for banjo, glockenspiel, accordion and other instruments. Now they have completed a full ‘multi-instrumental music spectacle’ with which they will come to Rotterdam in September, after an extensive European tour.

Gallowstreet Brass Band - slotfeest Blazers zijn hip, zoveel is zeker. Sinds een aantal jaren staan er in Nederland almaar de mooiste combo’s op. Neem uit Friesland Broken Brass Ensemble, uit de hoofdstad Jungle By Night, en nu ook: Gallowstreet Brass Band, eveneens uit Amsterdam. Deze 10-mans formatie heeft zijn sporen op straat verdiend door het spelen in optochten en op buurtfeestjes; gehard door de elementen geven ze een koperen glans aan elke plek waar ze spelen. Gallowstreet Brass Band speelt hip-hop, house, New Orleans-brass en veel meer. Menig festivalbezoeker werd al van zijn sokken geblazen in het afgelopen jaar. Een slotfeest van jewelste! Horns are hip, that’s for sure. For some years now, the finest possible combo’s have come to life in the Netherlands. Take for instance the Broken Brass Ensemble from Friesland, and Jungle By Night from Amsterdam, and here and now: Gallowstreet Brass Band, also from the capital. This 10 men strong formation has won its spurs on the street, by playing in parades and during local community parties; hardened by the elements, they provide a copper glance to each of their performance sites. Gallowstreet Brass Band plays hiphop, house, New Orleans-brass and much more. This year, many festival visitors have already been completely blown away. An amazing closing party!

Winterdagen is het filmische muziekproject van pianist Mink Steekelenburg en bassist Martijn Eikenhout. Een concert van deze jonge groep uit Rotterdam voelt als een expeditie in de wereld van beeldende en minimale muziek. Geïnspireerd door artiesten als Phillip Glass, Nils Frahm en Sigur Rós brengen ze zachte, melancholische klanken ten gehore. Ze houden het continu spannend door meerdere instrumenten te bespelen en live veel te improviseren. Winterdagen speelde dit jaar onder meer op het bospodium op festival Oerol Terschelling waar ze de toehoorders ademloos achterlieten. Winterdagen (Winter days) is a cinematic music project, created by piano player Mink Steekelenburg and bass player Martijn Eikenhout. A concert by these young musicians from Rotterdam feels like an expedition into the world of visual and minimal music. Inspired by artists such as Phillip Glass, Nils Frahm and Sigur Rós, they play a performance filled with soft, melancholic sounds. They manage to keep it full of excitement, by playing various instruments and by many live improvisations. This year Winterdagen have performed several times, including during the Oerol festival on the island of Terschelling. They played on a stage in the wood, where they left their audience in breathless silence.

Soldier’s Heart Deze band afkomstig uit Kasterlee (België) maakt schitterende dreampop, geïnspireerd door bands als Beach House, Alt-J en The Knife. Indie-tronica van het hipste soort. Vorig jaar werden ze door het veelbeluisterde radiostation Studio Brussel nog gezien als een van de voorlopers van een nieuwe lichting Belgische bands, waarbij de atmosfeer van de liedjes van Soldier’s Heart werd omschreven als een van ‘slapeloze neonnachten in een tropische hotelkamer’. Dat wordt een broeierige avond in de Kleine Zaal! This band, from Kasterlee in Belgium, plays terrific dreampop, inspired by bands such as Beach House, Alt-J and The Knife. Indietronica of the hippest possible kind. Last year, Studio Brussel, a very popular radio station, considered them to be one of the frontrunners of a new generation of Belgian bands. They described the atmosphere of the Soldier’s Heart songs as feeling like ‘sleepless nights in a tropical hotel room’. This will no doubt become a sultry night in the Kleine Zaal!

Platform-Scenography nodigt je uit bij een spraakmakend diner voorafgaand aan Suite No1 “ABC” van Joris Lacoste. Op 19 september doet het reizend exposium voor scenografen en dramaturgen Festival De Keuze aan. Het exposium is een symposium en expeditie ineen, het verplaatst zich deels door het land en strijkt voor een avond neer in Rotterdam. Tijdens dit exposium nemen ze de tijd om zich vast te bijten in hedendaagse scenografische vraagstukken. Onderdeel van hun reis is een maaltijd in het teken van de voorstelling van Lacoste. Ze nodigen je uit aan te schuiven voor goed eten en om mee te zoeken naar woorden, die theaterbeelden kunnen vangen. Leer met de ogen van een decorontwerper te kijken naar de ode aan het gesproken woord Suite No1 “ABC”.

Platform-Scenography invites you to attend a striking dinner, prior to Suite No1 “ABC” by Joris Lacoste. On 19 September, the travelling ‘exposium’ for scenographers and dramaturges will call in at Festival De Keuze. This exposium is both a symposium and an expedition: partially it moves through the country and for one night, it descends in Rotterdam. During this exposium, the members will take time to delve into contemporary scenographic issues. Part of their journey will be a meal marked by Lacoste’s performance. They will invite you to join in for a lovely meal and to help with searching for words that can capture theatrical images. Platform-Scenography (P-S) is curator van het Exposium en het diner. Het P-S is een zowel analoog als digitaal netwerk dat als doel heeft om de scenografie als een zelfstandige ontwerpdiscipline beter zichtbaar te maken. Platform-Scenography (P-S) is the curator of the Exposium and the dinner. P-S is both an analogue and digital network, aiming to make scenography more visible as an independent design discipline. Literally, it wants to provide a platform where scenographers from all the design disciplines in theatre (light, sound, costumes, video, space) can meet each other, share their working experience and expertise, and sharpen their thinking.

Met dit improviserende ontwerpduo halen we nóg iets bijzonders naar Festival De Keuze. Tessel Brühl en Jaroslav Toussaint studeerden in juni af aan het Sandberg Instituut en slaan in september hun kampement op in en rond de Rotterdamse Schouwburg. Van de vroege ochtend tot de late avond zijn ze aanwezig om alles wat ze zien, voelen en denken te verwerken in een continue stroom aan spannende ontwerpen. In hun Factory of Choices eisen ze – in deze tijden waarin al het ‘nieuwe’ enkel bedacht wordt om ons te helpen consumeren – de verbeelding en het plezier zelf iets te maken terug. Om deze vervolgens via de grote mediawand op inspirerende wijze door te geven aan jou. Flight Forward vecht voor de oprechte vernieuwing. Daarbij is de aanval de enige uitweg.

With this improvising design duo, we have obtained another special item for Festival De Keuze. Tessel Brühl and Jaroslav Toussaint graduated at the Sandberg Instituut in June, and in September they will set up camp in and around the Rotterdamse Schouwburg. From early in the morning till late at night, they will be present to process everything they see, feel and think in a continuous flow of exciting objects. In their Factory of Choices they demand – in a time such as this, in which all ‘new things’ are only invented to help us consume – the return of imagination and pleasure to create something yourself. And to subsequently submit these to you in a very inspiring way, via the large media wall. Flight Forward is a fight for genuine renewal. Hence, the attack is the only way out.

Niet alleen is Festival De Keuze in gesprek met kunstenaars en bezoekers, ook met collega’s uit de hele wereld wisselen we veelvuldig van gedachten. We maken onderdeel uit van twee - door de Europese Unie ondersteunde - netwerken Imagine 2020 en Create to Connect. Imagine 2020 (2010 - 2015) Imagine 2020 is een Europees netwerk van festivals en theaters die zich gezamenlijk inzetten voor een duurzamere toekomst. De Rotterdamse Schouwburg gaat de uitdaging aan om de noodzaak tot transitie te bespre­ ken. We inspireren en ondersteunen kunstenaars die rondom dit thema werken.

Festival De Keuze not only enters into dialogue with artists and visitors, we also frequently exchange ideas with colleagues from all over the world. We form part of two networks that are supported by the European Union: Imagine 2020 and Create to Connect. Imagine 2020 (2010 - 2015) Imagine 2020 is a European network of festivals and theatres which collectively devote themselves to a more sustainable future. The Rotterdamse Schouwburg takes up the challenge to discuss this necessity of transition. We inspire and support artists who incorporate this theme in their work.

Create to Connect (2013 - 2018) Samen met onze Create to Connect-partners nemen we onze manier van internationaal samenwerken onder de loep. We denken na over nieuwe en duurzame manieren om een (blijvende) band te realiseren tussen het lokale publiek en de internationale kunstenaar.

Create to Connect (2013 - 2018) Together with our Create to Connect partners, we want to critically examine the way in which we work together internationally. We reflect upon new and sustainable methods to realise a (lasting) alliance between the local audience and the international artist.

Ticket sales

Op 19, 21, 22, 23, 26, 27 en 28 september kun je voordelig voorstellingen combineren met het dagpasse-partout. Dagpasse-partouts zijn enkel verkrijgbaar aan de kassa. Het dagpasse-partout is geen toegangsbewijs, je ontvangt bij de kassa aparte kaarten voor de voorstellingen die je wil zien.

Openingstijden kassa De kassabalie is geopend van maandag tot en met zaterdag van 14:00 tot 18:00 (of tot aanvang laatste voorstelling) en op zondag vanaf 1 uur voor de voorstelling. Je kunt de kassa telefonisch bereiken via 010 411 81 10 van maandag tot en met zaterdag van 14:00 tot 17:00. Kortingen Studenten, vakpashouders en CJP-kaarthouders betalen voor de voorstellingen tijdens Festival De Keuze slechts € 10,00. Ook met je stadspas en Schouwburgkaart krijg je korting.

Keuzepasse-partout Wil je meer voorstellingen zien tijdens Festival De Keuze? Voor € 100 / € 75 (Schouwburgkaart) / € 50 (student, CJP, CKV en vakpas) kun je onbeperkt naar bijna alle voorstellingen van Festival De Keuze.* Met je passe-partout kun je kaartjes reserveren bij de kassabalie en -telefoon en op de dag van de voorstelling op vertoon van je passe-partout afhalen aan de kassa of op locatie. *Het passe-partout geldt niet voor Human Requiem.

On 19, 21, 22, 23, 26, 27 and 28 September it is possible to combine several performances with a day-card. Day-cards are only available at the box office. This daycard is not an admission ticket; you have to pick up your tickets for each separate performance you want to attend at the box office.

Opening hours box office Keuze-card The counter of the box office will be opened from Monday until Saturday from 14:00 until 18:00 hrs (or until the start of the final performance) and on Sundays from 1 hour before the performances start. You can contact the box office by calling +31 10 411 81 10 from Monday until Saturday from 14:00 until 17:00 hrs. Discounts Students, holders of a Vakpas and holders of a CJP will only pay €10 for each of the performances during Festival De Keuze. Your City Card and Schouwburgkaart will also offer you discounts.

Would you like to see a number of performances during Festival De Keuze?
