Two Punjab MLAs arrested at Ottawa airport and deported Two politicians from the Indian state of Punjab were reportedly denied entry into Canada on Sunday and put on a flight back to India. Kultar Singh Sandhwan and Amarjit Singh Amarjit Singh Sandoa, Kultar Singh Sandhwan Sandoa, both MLAs with the Aam Admi Party (AAP) in Punjab, were detained and questioned by immigration officials upon arrival at Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport, according to Kamal Garg, a B.C.-based spokesperson for the AAP. The MLAs were in Ottawa for a family event, but were unable to satisfy Canadian authorities as to the purpose of their visit, Garg said. Continued on page 7

21 sentenced in massive India-based IRS phone scam Twenty-one people involved in a massive fraud and money laundering conspiracy were sentenced to up to 20 years in jail, US Department of Justice announced Friday, joining three other conspirators sentenced earlier this year. The operation, based out of call centers in India, targeted U.S. residents in telephone scams where they posed as representatives from the IRS. During the four years the operation was active, more than 15,000 U.S. residents were scammed out of hundreds of millions of dollars and more than 50,000 people had their personal information misused, the New York Times reports. In a statement, Attorney General Jeff Sessions called it the “first-ever large scale, multi-jurisdiction prosecution targeting the India call center scam industry.� The Department of Justice, Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and the Treasury Department worked for years to shut down this fraud ring. Older brother of Toronto mass shooter was facing drug and weapons charges: court docs New details have been revealed about 29-year-old Toronto shooter Faisal Hussain. The older brother of the gunman responsible for one of Toronto’s worst mass shootings was facing drug and weapons charges when he went into a coma last year, court records show. After Faisal Hussain was identified as having carried out Sunday’s attack that killed two and wounded 13, it emerged that his brother had been unconscious in a coma at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto for months. in Saskatoon on July 25, 2015 and charged with possession of cocaine for the purposes of

trafficking, according to Saskatchewan courts. On Feb 21, 2017, the case was forwarded to federal prosecutors to be sent to Ontario. Fahad was residing at a Thorncliffe Park address with his parents Faroq and Sutana Hussain as part of his release when he was arrested once again in February 2017 and charged with breaching his bail conditions after he was allegedly found to be in possession of shotgun shells. British Columbia toughens requirements for property purchased by corporations, trusts British Columbia will soon force people who use corporations or trusts to buy property in the province to disclose more complete information, a move the government says will close a loophole that has allowed speculators to evade real estate taxes. Starting Sept. 17, new property-transfer-tax forms will require people to report additional information, including their name, citizenship and social-insurance number, if they purchase residential or commercial real estate through a corporation or trust. have exemptions for charitable trusts and certain corporations, such as hospitals and schools. “Not only is tax evasion in real estate fundamentally unfair, but it’s driving up the cost of housing for people who live and work in our communities,� Minister of Finance Carole James said in a news release issued Wednesday. “These changes
