BC’s population passes 5 million due to high international migration The population of British Columbia has passed the five million mark for the first time, according to a Statistics Canada estimation. The report says international migration is to thank for the spike — as it is in every province that saw a population increase. Canada’s population was approximately 37.2 million on Oct. 1, up 184,000 from July 1. This was the largest population increase in number since 1971. “I don’t find it surprising at all,� licensed immigration consultant Alex Khadempour of CICS Immigration Consulting said. Fiji-born cop killed on duty by illegal immigrant in California A Fijian-born California Police Department officer was killed while on duty on boxing day. 33-year-old Ronil Singh (picutured) had made a traffic stop in Newman. According to the Stanislaus County Sheriff ’s Department: “At 12:57am, Officer Singh called off on a traffic stop at Merced Street and Eucalyptus Avenue in Newman. A few moments later he called out “shots fired� over the radio. Multiple agencies responded to assist and Singh was found at the scene with gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.� Mr Singh worked for the Newman Police Department since July of 2011. His family migrated to US in 2002. The late Mr Singh is survived by his wife Anamika and 5-month old son. Memorial fund has been set up by the
Number of Indians who got Canadian citizenship this year rose by 50% The number of Indians living in Canada who obtained citizenship increased by 50% this year, The Times of India reported, quoting immigration authorities. During the 10-month period ending October 2018, as many as 15,016 Indians obtained citizenship after having lived in the country as permanent residents for a certain period of time. This number in the corresponding period last year was 9,992. India

was only marginally behind the Philippines (15,642) in the number of permanent residents acquiring Canadian citizenship. From January to October this year, 1.39 lakh permanent residents became Canadian citizens, with Indians accounting for 10.7% of them. While these are preliminary figures, the numbers are expected to rise when final statistics are calculated.

South Asian man jailed 14-years for setting fire in Richmond that killed son, mother-in-law A Richmond man has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for setting a fire that killed his son and mother-inlaw more than three years ago — the culmination of weeks of increasingly “threatening� and “intimidating� behaviour toward the family, according to the judge. Neighbours phoned 911 after Surjit Singh Dosanjh, 40, lit the fire in the master bedroom of a fourplex in the middle of the night on April 13, 2015. His mother-in-law
and teenage son were sleeping on bunk beds in a room they shared. They both died of carbon monoxide poisoning, despite firefighters’ efforts to revive them. Dosanjh was arrested and charged with two counts of second-degree murder. He pleaded not guilty to both counts when his trial began in January, but was convicted of manslaughter in July. ‘He was angry’ BC Supreme Court Justice
