WHY STUDY THE SUBJECT? The digital age needs computer scientists. Computer programs have virtually infiltrated every aspect of our lives. Computer scientists theorise, design, develop, and apply the software and hardware for the programs we use day in day out. Computer scientists are needed in every type of industry. Every industry uses computers so naturally computer scientists can work in any. Problems in science, engineering, health care, and so many other areas can be solved by computers. It’s up to the computer scientist to figure out how, and design the software to apply the solution.

CONTENT AND BREAKDOWN Year 12 Content • Fundamentals of programming • Fundamentals of data structures • Software development • Theory of computation • Fundamentals of data representation • Fundamentals of computer systems • Fundamentals of computer organisation & architecture • Consequences of uses of computing • Fundamentals of communication & networking Year 13 Content Students will revise the Year 12 content which will feature in the A-level exams. In addition they will cover: • Fundamentals of databases • Big Data • Fundamentals of functional programming • Systematic approach to problem solving • Non-exam assessment - the computing practical project
ASSESSMENT • At A-level there are 2 examinations - one of these is an on-screen examination. There is also a practical project which is worth 20% of the final grade.
AFTER ASHCOMBE A-level Computer Science is excellent preparation for a job or for a degree in Engineering, Maths, Medicine, Law, or any type of Science.
