Render a figure using cylinders, coils, and slabs, and develop the form into a modern figure. The class will look at the work of Henri Moore, Matisse, and Modigliani as our guide. We will learn how to add arms, legs, clothing, faces, and gestures. With these modern and abstract sculptures, no hollowing is needed! Hand patina and glazing will be discussed and utilized to finish our projects. Basic knowledge in handbuilding is recommended.

Come ready to experiment! Students enrolled in this class will be making works using handbuilding or wheel throwing techniques. These will be used to explore various firing techniques such as barrel firing, raku, saggar, and more. Learn the history of alternative firings and explore how you can develop your understanding of various kilns and the alternative ways to treat surfaces. After the first class, various materials for inclusion in different firings will be determined in class.

This class will introduce you to the art of ceramic jewelry making by combining clay with different media (metal, glass, leather wire, etc.) to create beautiful pendants, necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and more! Examples of finished jewelry and step-by-step demonstrations will guide you in making your own unique wearable clay! Some beading and wire technique will be introduced. Combining beautiful shapes, textures and glazes – the possibilities are endless! Some clay experience preferred.

In this wheel throwing class students will work on pottery that resonates with the Danish lifestyle of Hygge, Hygge embodies all that is cozy and comfortable. Its clothing and items embrace a simple and modern aesthetic, and spaces are decorated with a focus on warm clam lighting and neutral colors. In winter months Hygge life serves a special purpose to carry one through the dark, cold, and sometimes isolating season. The focus of this class will be on creating mugs, soup bowls, luminaries and candlestick holders that echo this practice of simplicity in creature comforts.

In this fun clay class, children will have a great time getting their hands dirty while learning basic hand building skills. They will use coils and slabs to create fantasy animals, sea creatures and more as we explore the world of clay.

This course explores the styles and techniques of some of our country's greatest artists, from colonial times to the present day. Students will learn about composition, color, and form while working in two- and three-dimensions using a variety of materials. Students will be learning a little about each artist's life and how the time and place influenced their art. Projects will be inspired by wonderful artists such as Edward Hicks, Charles Demuth, Louise Nevelson, Robert Indiana, Alexander Calder, Andy Warhol, and Georgia O'Keeffe.

How much can an artist get out of a pencil? This course is for young artists who love to draw. The basic skills of line drawing, form, shading, perspective and composition will be taught. We will be working with these elements towards finished pencil pieces. General instruction will be given to the class and then individual attention will address each student's specific needs.

This drawing and painting course will focus on animals, both wild and domestic. Children will be introduced to David Hockney's wonderful pet portraits and George Rodrigue's ghostly 'Blue Dog' paintings. Students will enhance their drawing skills by learning to see animals as groups of connecting, simple shapes. They will learn how to manipulate various paints and mix their own colors. In the drawing section of the class, students will be given guided projects and exercises that will cover the use of line, tone (light and shadow), spaces (negative and positive), and relationships (perspective, proportion, etc.). Welcome to the world of mosaics, where not only is it okay to break things, it’s expected! This intensive workshop will introduce beginners to the basics of mosaic making: the variety of materials and adhesives, cutting and laying tile, and the grouting process. Vitreous glass tile, ceramic tile, stained glass, and fine china are available for students to explore and incorporate in their work. All necessary tools, adhesives, and materials will be provided but students are welcome to bring in their own tiles, broken china, costume jewelry, or personal items they might like to include. Bringing nothing is fine too! Students will complete an 8”x6” mosaic by the day’s end.

Are you inspired by nature and the beautiful forms that are part of her bounty? Join me in this workshop where you will learn a variety of ways to create an organic vessel or sculpture. Many methods of manipulating clay using the basic pinch, coil and slab techniques will be demonstrated. With the assistance of slump and hump molds, foam, and tools; you will learn how to drape, press, pinch and paddle clay into unique forms. Whether you are a beginner or have some experience, this workshop offers the opportunity to create unique decorative or functional forms. Have you ever had the pleasure of putting together a collage? Whether you are trained or untrained in visual art, you're invited to join our workshop to get started. We will go through the simple steps required to achieve technical ability. In a quick warmup, you'll begin your first piece; by late afternoon, you'll be an initiate. Come prepared to juxtapose fragments of printed matter to produce unexpected results in an encouraging atmosphere.

Learn how to create a non-adhesive book structure and case/box that can be made large or tiny, soft or hard covered, embellished, labeled or simple. You will end up with original books in a box from templates that you can adapt to any size. Heavy weight-colored papers, printed label options, and precut paper for book block will be provided.

For this one-day workshop, we will create simple and fun stack rings in sterling silver. Students will learn how to texture, file, solder, and polish metal. By the end, students should be able to make at least three rings in different styles. More rings can be made if time allows.
