This course opens the doors into the world of basket weaving. Learn the basics of construction and build baskets that are both functional and decorative. Pattern work with rattan reeds will highlight traditional weaving techniques. We'll also use natural materials with a freeform approach to create and shape baskets that are artistically unique. No prior experience needed. Students will make 2 to 3 or more baskets depending on how quickly they work.

Render a figure using cylinders, coils, and slabs, and develop the form into a modern figure. The class will look at the work of Henri Moore, Matisse, and Modigliani as our guide. We will learn how to add arms, legs, clothing, faces, and gestures. With these modern and abstract sculptures, no hollowing is needed! Hand patina and glazing will be discussed and utilized to finish our projects.

But all too often and all too quickly, we tend to gravitate towards one method and forget about the rest. Taking a look at all of our resources is a great way to begin making pots or sculpture, and it's a wonderful way for experienced clay hands to find new inspiration. While form and Function are of utmost importance when working with clay, let’s not forget how much fun it is to make our pots look great! Perfect for both hand builders and wheel throwers alike, the focus of this class will be on the finishing process. We will begin by making a variety of tools to imprint our own designs on our pieces, including stamps, springs, and rollers. We will then explore a variety of surface decoration techniques – sgraffito, Mishima, slip decoration, water etching, and underglaze stencils – just to name a few. We’ll take the stress out of glazing by making our own glaze tests, providing us with an informed idea of how specific glaze combinations will look on our pieces. Weather permitting, we will also play around with spraying glazes. Students must have basic knowledge of working with clay and be self-directed. Please bring a notebook to class.

In this course, students will explore creating interesting vessels using techniques of drawing/carving away at surfaces, called sgraffito, and cutting away surfaces, called faceting. Learn about the rich history of glazes and how to fire them in this hands-on technical class. Students will learn how to understand ceramic materials, how to mix a glaze, various glaze application methods, and testing. As a class we will fire glaze tests for both cone 6 electric and cone 10 reduction and analyze the results. In addition, we will discuss various glaze defects and how to resolve them as well as how to reproduce consistent results. Both test tiles, and pieces to glaze, will be produced during class.

This introduction course will develop a student's skill and ability to create a successful and beautiful drawing. The course will teach the fundamentals of observational drawing when working from life and the skills needed when working from other types of reference. The basics of space and perspective, rendering 3-D form, light and shadow, composition and design, artistic intent and concept, beauty and aesthetics, will be covered. We will cover the basics – straight, chain, split, and stem stitches, French knots, and leaf stitches – plus some more advanced techniques, including woven stitches and dimensional work. Tools and materials, how to embroider garments and accessories, and how to finish pieces for display will also be covered. Take a rod of cold glass, turn it in the flame of a torch, and learn to manipulate it into extraordinarily beautiful flameworked beads, both decorative and practical. Glass beads have incredible depth and can be embedded with flowers and patterns or worked into intricate floral shapes and sculptures. This class will introduce students of all levels to the basic materials and processes of jewelry making. Learn the technical and problem-solving skills necessary to create your own jewelry designs from drawings to a finished piece. Beginners will move through a series of core projects to build a foundation, including piercing by sawing, textured rings, bezel settings, cold connection, soldering chain with toggle clasp, file ring, *appliqué* jewelry, and hollow forms. Findings (parts used to complete a piece of jewelry) will be covered throughout the class. Projects will take a series of sessions to complete, varying based on design and technique. Upon completion, a curriculum specific to your design style/technical direction will be created. Intermediate students will have a curriculum created specific to their needs. Advanced students may work on individual projects with guidance from the instructor.

Watercolor is one of the most creative and versatile art mediums. It can be realistic, abstract, illustrative, or animated in style. While beautiful, it can be frustrating to control, and using water to mix color correctly can be tricky. In this class, students will learn about various watercolor techniques: wet on wet, dry on wet, dry on dry, flat wash, graduated wash, and variegated wash. Through practice, exploration, and experimentation, students will discover their own individual style and find the pleasure of this beautifully creative practice. A material fee of $30 is included in the total "Fees" below.

Families will work together with the instructor to learn step-by-step how to take natural sheep’s wool and bring it to life. Explore your creativity while creating soft and colorful felted animals! Projects will include a mama hen with her baby chicks, a cat and its kittens, a dog and its puppies, a sea otter and its pup, and a unicorn with its foal.
