Our children’s program is designed to encourage creativity. Emphasis on process rather than product creates an environment of free inquiry and exploration. Most importantly, positive acceptance of each child’s artistry builds confidence and enhances self-worth.

SECURITY RULES REQUIRE THAT YOU COME INTO THE SCHOOL TO DROP OFF AND PICK UP YOUR CHILD.

MUSICAL THEATRE WORKSHOP

19U CHI231: Mondays, Jun 17-Jul 22, 3:45 PM to 5:15 PM 6 sessions $125 ($130 after Jun 6) Material fee $5 9-11 years This class will introduce students to the fundamentals of musical theatre: acting, singing, and dancing. Lessons will focus on improvisation, character development, and performance techniques – all while having FUN! The class will culminate in an informal performance for parents and families.

DRAWING, PAINTING & PASTELS

Make vibrant, colorful works of art showcasing your skills in watercolor and other paint, as well as pencil, ink, and pastel. We will explore famous artists’ techniques and create amazing works of art just like the Masters. You will learn to draw and paint, but be ready to have a ton of fun! NEW! EXPERIMENTING WITH CLAY

Karen Elder 19U CHI227: Mondays, Jun 17-Jul 22, 3:45 PM to 5:15 PM 6 sessions $125 ($130 after Jun 6) Material fee $20 7-8 years This course explores the styles and techniques of some of our country’s greatest artists, from colonial times to the present day. Students will learn about composition, color, and form while working in two- and three-dimensions using a variety of materials. Students will be learning a little about each artist’s life and how the time and place influenced their art. Projects will be inspired by wonderful artists such as Edward Hicks, Charles Demuth, Louise Nevelson, Robert Indiana, Alexander Calder, Andy Warhol, and Georgia O’Keeffe. Sarah Smith 19U CHI235: Mondays, Jun 17-Jul 22, 3:45 PM to 5:15 PM 6 sessions $130 ($135 after Jun 6) Material fee $25 9-11 years This class is all about experimenting with clay and hand building! Students will build their skills, beginning with clay preparation and progressing to learning forming methods both on and off the wheel. Each week, we’ll explore new methods for making unique functional and sculptural work. This fun class will take both new and experienced students through some of the endless creative possibilities of working in clay!

SUMMER FUN: SCULPT & PAINT

In this exciting class, we will combine the excitement of summer with a variety of different art techniques to create sensational seasonal art. Make artwork based on your favorite summer memories and adventures - or create pieces from your wildest imagination!

DRAWING ESSENTIALS

This course is for young artists who love to draw. The basic skills of line drawing, form, shading, perspective and composition will be taught. We will be working with these elements towards finished pencil pieces. General instruction will be given to the class and then individual attention will address each student’s specific needs.

This course is for students interested in learning to use the pottery wheel and forming techniques for functional pots. Build your skills on the wheel hands on by learning to center, make cylinders, bowls, mugs and more! This fun class will take new and experienced students on messy adventures and help them develop a deep love for ceramics and the arts.

NEEDLE FELTING FOR CHILDREN

Christine Hsiao 19U CHI215: Tuesdays, Jun 18-Jul 23, 3:45 PM to 5:15 PM 6 sessions $125 ($130 after Jun 6) Material fee $20 7-8 years Needle felting is a process which uses special tools to interlock wool fibers to form a more condensed material. No sewing, knitting, or gluing! Children will learn step-by-step techniques that take natural sheep’s wool and bring it to life! This class is designed for children to explore their creativity and develop hand-eye coordination while they create 2-D and 3-D soft and colorful felted woolly animals like bunnies, owls, penguins, dogs, and much more!

Children in this class will draw and paint scenes from the city, country, ocean, sky, and outer space. We can create with pencils, markers, oil pastels, watercolors, and tempera paints. Inspiration may come from studying works by artists such as Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Cézanne, Georgia O’Keefe, and Grant Wood.

COMIC BOOK HEROES & VILLAINS

Peter Scanlan 19U CHI214: Wednesdays, Jun 19-Jul 24, 3:45 PM to 5:15 PM 6 sessions $125 ($130 after Jun 6) Material fee $20 10-13 years The depiction of mythic beings, gods, and monsters is one of the oldest traditions in art, dating back to man’s first Stone Age cave drawings. Students will learn to break the human (or inhuman) figure down to its simplest form and then reconfigure it to create drawings of fantastical beings that spring partly from the real world and partly from the student’s imagination. Using the same techniques, students will draw machines, robots, architecture, and anything else they can think of to breathe life into their artwork.

CREATIVE CLAY

This class will introduce your young artist to hand building, allowing them to experience techniques such coil, slab, and pinch pots. Students will use their new skills to a create fun figures in clay and other projects.

PAINTING EXPERIENCE

Marcia Oakes 19U CHI033: Thursdays, Jun 20-Aug 1, 3:45 PM to 5:15 PM No class on Jul 4. 6 sessions $125 ($130 after Jun 6) Material fee $20 5-6 years Catch a rainbow and melt it apart - then find new ways to put it back together again! This class plays with color using tempera, watercolor, crayons, pastels, and markers. Collages and paintings are some of the projects your child will bring home. This course is designed to help children manipulate color in various media to express themselves creatively.

DESIGN AND FASHION

Exercise your imagination as we create pillows, hats, shirts and more. Draw fashion illustrations and superhero costumes like professional designers. We will also learn about textiles, embroidery and simple sewing.

AMAZING ANIMALS

Karen Elder 19U CHI203: Thursdays, Jun 20-Aug 1, 3:45 PM to 5:15 PM No class on Jul 4. 6 sessions $125 ($130 after Jun 6) Material fee $20 7-8 years This drawing and painting course will focus on animals, both wild and domestic. Children will be introduced to David Hockney’s wonderful pet portraits and George Rodrigue’s ghostly ’Blue Dog’ paintings. Students will enhance their drawing skills by learning to see animals as groups of connecting, simple shapes. They will learn how to manipulate various paints and mix their own colors.

DRAW & PAINT LIKE THE MASTERS

John Mungiello 19U CHI223: Saturdays, Jun 22-Jul 27, 12:30 PM to 3:00 PM No class on Jun 29. 5 sessions $135 ($140 after Jun 6) Material fee $20 10-13 years Explore drawing and painting fundamentals and learn to make them work together like the great masters of western art. See how Rembrandt used light to create his famous paintings, how Van Gogh used color and thick paint to create wonders of neo-impressionistic art, and how Da Vinci used glazing to create brilliant works. By learning how to interpret classical techniques, students will use critical thinking to train their eyes into seeing past the surface of a picture, while at the same time building their creativity and developing a personal visual language in drawing media and acrylic paint.
