A Message from the Board President

Paramount to our mission and backed by the highest commitment to equity, inclusion, access and opportunity, The Arc of Chester County remains a leading provider of programs and services for individuals with disabilities and their families. An achievement such as this takes a village, and we are so grateful to have the unwavering support of our community and friends year after year.

As I embark on my first year as President, I do so with humility and pride knowing that, together, we stand on the shoulders of our founders whose hard-fought advocacy efforts launched a civil rights movement that significantly impacted the quality of life of countless individuals with disabilities and their families that continues to this day. I am truly honored to be taking this journey of service with a dedicated group of fellow board members, incredibly experienced and talented staff and many loyal community partners and friends.

In the pages that follow is evidence of the critical and vital work being done by our skilled and compassionate staff, as well as the remarkable influence our donors and partners have on our ability to support those entrusted in our care. A testament to The Arc’s hard work is the 99% of this year’s annual survey respondents who indicated that The Arc improved or enhanced their quality of life. Other proud accomplishments throughout the year include The Arc’s solid financial position and remaining compliant and in good standing with our local, state, and federal regulatory partners.

However, our greatest achievement this past year has been the successful completion of The Arc of Chester County’s 70th Anniversary Campaign which raised $1,659,855. This funding enabled The Arc to complete several much-needed improvements and upgrades to our facility. Over the last three years, a new roof, all new restroom facilities, server, software, and hardware, a fully renovated boardroom, kitchen, tech hub, front lobby and new children’s outdoor playground were among the projects completed thanks to this milestone 70th Anniversary Campaign effort. For those of you that have participated in this successful capital initiative, thank you! Our facility is beautiful, safe, and ready to host many more decades of important work and developmental milestones.

The Arc of Chester County remains a beacon of dedicated, quality service for individuals with disabilities and their families. On behalf of the Arc Family, I extend my sincerest gratitude for your continued confidence in, and support of, The Arc of Chester County. We remain grateful for the privilege to support and advocate for and with you and your family in your homes, at work and the community at large.

Together and with great compassion, we are helping individuals with disabilities and their families to Achieve with us every day!

Yours in service,

President

Annual Leadership

President’s Award

Matt Holliday

The President’s Award is reserved for a stand-out advocate, friend, and longtime supporter of The Arc of Chester County. It honors a true ‘Champion’ for individuals with disabilities and their families. This distinct honor is selected by the President of the Board of Directors. Matt Holliday, The Arc's out-going immediate past president, long-time advocate, friend, and volunteer, was honored with the 2024 President’s Award.

Matt was a long-time resident of West Chester, PA and graduated from West Chester University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science. He has been deeply connected to The Arc of Chester County since his college days. Following graduation Matt found employment in his field of study when he assumed the role of Chief of Staff for Representative Dan Truitt in December 2010 until Matt was elected as the Chester County Prothonotary in 2015. In January 2020, Matt became the Executive Director of the Chester County Bar Association until January of 2023 when he was named the Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Bar Association.

As a 2014 graduate of the United Way of Chester County Leadership Program that prepares professionals to be effective leaders in nonprofit service, Matt’s commitment to leadership through community service is truly unmatched. He has served as President of seven other non-profit Board of Directors in Chester County, and he has served or is still serving on over 10 different Board of Directors of various non-profits within our community.

It is no surprise that Matt has been repeatedly honored for his community service. In 2018 he was named the Citizen of the Year by the Greater West Chester Chamber of Commerce, given the Outstanding Young Professional in Public Administration Award from the American Society for Public Administration and bestowed the Senator Robert J. Thompson Public Service Award from the Exton Region Chamber of Commerce. In 2020, Matt received the Vista Millennial Superstar Award and the West Chester University Legacy of Leadership Award. In 2012, Matt was named Rotarian of the Year and, in 2013, a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Club of West Chester.

Matt’s connection to The Arc of Chester County through his volunteer service spans more than two decades. Since 2013, Matt has served in many board positions and has also served on The Arc’s Advocacy and Governmental Affairs Committee. Matt officially joined the board of The Arc of Chester County on in 2015, and has served as a Director, 2nd Vice President, 1st Vice President, and President during the last decade and he has just completed his two-year term as Immediate Past President. His dedication to The Arc of Chester County for almost two decades is remarkable and represents only a small part of his outstanding service to our community earning him this new honor and award. Congratulations, Matt Holliday.

Ruth Wood Philanthropic Leadership Award Service Awards

This award, named after founder Ruth Wood and established in honor of her 60-year legacy of advocating and fighting for the rights of people with disabilities, honors a long history of philanthropy to The Arc of Chester County. It is presented in recognition of exemplary and ardent financial support to The Arc, and it honors and recognizes outstanding dedication, commitment, and philanthropic leadership with a proven record of years of generosity and support of Arc programs and services. The 2024 Ruth Wood Philanthropic Leadership Award was presented to long-time members and friends, Tom and Beth Beckett.

Tom is a Managing Director at NW Financial Group, LLC where he advises governmental, educational, and non-profit organizations on financial, strategic and budgetary matters. He has worked in the public finance field for more than 35 years. Tom came to The Arc during the capital campaign to build the current facility in 2000. He assisted with the tax-exempt bond financing and strategic planning which made building the facility possible. The Arc has benefitted tremendously from Tom’s expertise, dedication, and compassion as a volunteer in various positions for more than two and half decades.

Tom also served on The Arc of Chester County’s Board as a Director, First Vice President, President, Immediate Past President, and Treasurer. He is also currently serving as an At-Large Member of the Governance Committee and as an active member of the Finance & Investment Committee where he has served for more than 20 years. Tom would have never been able to dedicate so much of his

time and talent to The Arc without the support of his wife, Beth, and his current employer, NW Financial Group, LLC. Beth is equally dedicated to The Arc and her own craft while being enormously charitable with her time and talent. As the owner and President of Real Estate Strategies Inc., she has an impressive twenty-year tenure as a highly regarded real estate consultant. With her vast experience, she has guided many non-profits, for profits and governmental agencies in the region on a variety of real estate ventures and studies. She has served on numerous boards as President and has been a featured speaker at numerous national conferences in the real estate arena.

Tom and his wife Beth live in Paoli where they raised their two adult children. They have more than a two-decade long history of philanthropic leadership and support to The Arc of Chester County. Tom and Beth Beckett were presented with the 2024 Ruth Wood Philanthropic Leadership Award for their exceptional work and generosity in helping to advance our mission for individuals with disabilities and their families.

Agnes Grady Chesko Family of the Year Award Service Awards

The Keenan Family

The Arc of Chester County Agnes Grady Chesko Family of the Year Award honors an outstanding family whose care for their children and assistance to other Arc families, and support of The Arc’s mission, sets an extraordinary example of love, loyalty, and dedicated advocacy for support. The Arc of Chester County was proud to present The Keenan Family with this prestigious award for 2024.

The Keenan Family came to The Arc of Cheser County in March of 2023 when their son, Connor, started in The Arc’s Inclusive Preschool Program. The family instantly embraced and committed themselves to supporting the mission and work The Arc does for individuals with disabilities and their families.

For the past two years, they have had their own crowdfunding fundraising page, ‘Connor’s Crew’ and had nearly three dozen walkers present and participating in The Arc’s Annual Bubble Walk & Fun Day event raising several thousand dollars for critical programs and services.

The Keenan Family actively participated in The Arc’s Holiday Fun Fest and planned and hosted a very successful RTS Awareness Night at Ice Line. During the Holidays, the Keenan’s also held a Family Calendar Raffle to raise money and awareness. These two personal fundraising initiatives raised an amazing $12,000 for the new Children’s Playground as part of the 70th Anniversary Renovation Campaign.

Last fall, Sarah joined the Development and Community Relations Committee and Bill and Sarah graciously allowed The Arc to feature their son, Connor, and share their personal story to bring support and awareness to The Arc of Chester County and the important work we do.

It is almost hard to believe that one family could accomplish so much in such a short amount of time, but the Keenan’s did just that. It is because of this outstanding and remarkable level of commitment to The Arc that we honor The Keenan Family. The Arc of Chester County and The Chesko Family congratulate the Keenan Family for their amazing support and efforts in advancing The Arc’s mission within the community.

Employer of the Year Award

Riley Sales

The Arc of Chester County’s Employer of the Year Award honors an exemplary employer that demonstrates a strong commitment to a diverse and inclusive company culture. The Arc of Chester County was very proud to honor Riley Sales, Inc. as the recipient of the 2024 Employer of the Year Award.

Riley Sales was selected for this honor based on their values and commitment to the success of John Koresko, a Comprehensive Employment Services (CES) participant, who upon completion of the HVAC Program at Delaware County Community College in 2023 was paired with The Arc to achieve gainful employment in the community.

The Arc visited Riley Sales Inc. in Plymouth Meeting regarding employment for John. Within a couple of days, Mike Riley reached out to interview John. During the interview, Mike told John that he has three rules to work for Riley: Show up, show up on time and show initiative.

Within several minutes, Michael extended an offer to John to be a warehouse associate. John graciously accepted and began work a couple of weeks later.

The Arc supported John at his new job on his first day and beyond. We observed John being openly welcomed by all the associates he was introduced to. It was evident that everyone at Riley Sales shared the same inclusion values. John was teamed up with fellow employee, Dominic who literally took John under his wing. John works in a large warehouse and there is much to learn. Dominic displayed patience, encouragement and commitment toward John’s success. Dominic showed outward joy in seeing John begin to fly on his own and was invaluable in this process. John recently received a raise in pay and an additional day of work, and he has more than fulfilled Michael’s three rules and then some as he continues to learn more about his position each day.

The Arc of Chester County honors Riley Sales Inc. a company that exemplifies and truly values inclusion and commitment to the community.

Service Awards

Employee of the Year Award

Ellen Thompson – Support Teacher

Each year, Arc employees nominate a team member to receive the Employee of the Year Award for outstanding service to the organization, its participants, and the team. Those employees that have demonstrated a commitment to The Arc and their job as well as shown initiative, enthusiasm, compassion, and teamwork are considered for this honor.

The 2024 Employee of the Year Award was awarded to long-time and dedicated Support Teacher, Ellen Thompson. Ellen joined The Arc Family more than 15 years ago and has impacted the lives of hundreds of children. Her fellow employees describe her as one of the most positive and selfless people they know and that our kiddos are very lucky to have her in the classroom.

Ellen is admired for her patient, loving, creative and imaginative play with the children who all want to be with her during the day. Her fellow teachers and therapists enjoy watching the children thrive when they are with her. As the Support Teacher in Tina Tauss’ classroom, she shared, “No matter what happens during the day, I really am so lucky to have Ellen to support me and the team with the children. Knowing that I have a person to work with that is so calm and able to successfully problem solve and strategize is both comforting and rewarding. Ellen is an incredible person and so deserving of The Arc’s Employee of the Year Award.”

Congratulations, Ellen Thompson! Thank you for all that you do for our children and families at The Arc of Chester County. We celebrate you and your outstanding dedication to our mission!

A Message from the CEO

What an exciting year we have had celebrating the successful completion of The Arc of Chester County’s 70th Anniversary. It is on behalf of those entrusted in our care that I extend my heartfelt appreciation for the generous donations received during the 2023-2024 year in support of our mission and our 70th Anniversary Campaign. To the 853 people, families, businesses, organizations, and partners whose names appear in the pages that follow, THANK YOU! Your donations totaled $1,087,468 and we are proud to share that 93 percent of this revenue went directly to support our programs and services.

For more than seven decades, The Arc of Chester County has made a meaningful difference in the lives of countless individuals with disabilities and those who love and care for them. Over the last 18 months, our Board and staff engaged in and completed a collective strategic visioning process

which will carry us forward for the next five years and lift the organization to another level of service and success.

Rooted in continuous quality, compassionate and dedicated service, The Arc’s Five-Year Strategic Plan was approved by the Board of Directors and launched on January 1, 2024. This important document will serve as the guiding compass of our work for those we are privileged to serve through December 31, 2029. Aligned with our Mission, Vision and Core Values, the strategic goals identified will ensure The Arc of Chester County not only remains a leading provider of programs and services for individuals with disabilities and their families, but it will be fiscally strong, technically advanced, and fully prepared for any challenges that may lay ahead.

This Five-Year Strategic Plan was developed with five pillars of focus: Program & Services, Infrastructure, Quality Management & Compliance, Community Engagement & Awareness and Workforce Development. Within these five main pillars of focus, individual goals are identified with tactics for accomplishment, measurements of success, and timelines for completion.

As we venture through this strategic journey, we thank you for your continued generosity and loyalty. Few words can describe just how grateful we are for your steadfast support in ensuring that individuals with disabilities and their families have the same opportunities as everyone else. I look forward to seeing you ‘Around the Arc.’ Until then, I wish you and yours the very best.

With sincere gratitude,

MISSION

To advocate, educate and provide services to empower individuals with disabilities and their families to enhance the quality of their lives.

I really like working for Wawa. I like talking to the customers and meeting new people, and I love saying
‘Have a nice day!’ to customers! It felt good to be named Employee of the Month…it made me feel happy!
~ Jay Siegel, Arc CES Participant

CORE VALUES

• Support the rights of individuals to participate fully in planning that affects their lives.

• Respect the dignity and worth of all individuals.

• Deliver efficient, quality services in a fiscally responsible manner.

• Deliver services that are focused on the needs of the individual and family.

Leaving a Legacy

We are deeply touched and grateful to our Legacy Society members who have generously included The Arc of Chester County in their estate plans, ensuring our mission continues to thrive for generations to come. This year, we honor and recognize two individuals whose bequest gifts were received during fiscal year 2024:

Caroline R. Thomas 1928 – 2023

Caroline was a lifelong resident of West Chester and an active and long-standing member of The Arc of Chester County. She was a very loyal and generous annual Milestones donor and a fierce advocate for The Arc of Chester County and those entrusted in our care. Caroline’s bequest supported activities in the arts for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities served by The Arc of Chester County.

Florence Scarella 1930 – 2022

Florence was born in Bryn Mawr and resided in Honey Brook, PA. She was a selfless and lifelong caretaker of others whose one sadness in life was not being able to have children of her own. Florence gifted The Arc of Chester County’s CELSP Program a significant portion of her estate which is being held in perpetuity at the Philadelphia Foundation. Interest earned annually will benefit The Arc’s Inclusive Preschool Program.

If you would like to learn about how to plan for The Arc of Chester County to receive a testamentary gift, please visit Planned Giving: Ways to Give: The Arc of Chester County or call the Office of Development at 610-696-8090, ext. 202.
