The President’s Letter

The President’s Letter Dear members, As we step into 2026, I hope the holidays were filled with joy, laughter, and memorable moments with family, friends, and fellow members. Like so many families at the Club, our holiday traditions have become entwined with those at the Club, from the beautiful Christmas trees located throughout the facilities, to the thoughtful letters from Santa that are handwritten and mailed out to the children.

I want to express my sincere appreciation to our dedicated staff for creating such a memorable holiday season. So much effort goes on behind the scenes to plan and execute events that bring joy to our members of all ages.

From Breakfast with Santa to the Winter Wonderland Holiday Skate, the Club was alive with festive spirit, and it was wonderful to see members fully embracing the celebrations.

Beginning in 2023, the Long Range Planning & Development Committee initiated a comprehensive review of the mandatory upgrades to the Tennis Building and Natatorium (swimming pool) required to ensure the ongoing safety, structural integrity and lifespan of these aging buildings. Over the past two years, this work has evolved into a broader long-range master planning process, carried out in close collaboration with various consultants, including architects, subject matter experts, and Management. This exploration has included member focus groups and several structural and technical assessments, all aimed at building a thorough and informed understanding of the Club’s current and future needs.

With this extensive foundational work well underway, the Committee and Board are preparing the next phase of engagement. This phase will include a Club-wide survey and additional opportunities for members to provide meaningful input on the strategic options being considered and help prioritize future initiatives. Beginning in February, members will be invited to share their perspectives as we continue shaping the long-term vision for the Club. We encourage all members to participate, as your feedback is essential in guiding the decision-making.

The Board has approved this year’s Nominating Committee in accordance with the Club’s Constitution and Bylaws. In the weeks ahead, the Committee will begin identifying nominees for the 2026/2027 Board of Directors and seeking members interested in serving on the House or Activity Committees. Starting the process early provides the Committee with sufficient time to carefully consider strong candidates. Members can expect to receive the Nominating Committee List soon, along with an invitation to submit suggestions for potential Board or Committee candidates. If you wish to put forward a nominee, please ensure they have provided their consent and have expressed interest in being considered.

The Shoppe has unveiled a new Arbutus merch collection: Rep Your Club / Rep Your Sport, and it has been fantastic to see members showing off their Arbutus spirit around the Club. Each piece was thoughtfully designed to celebrate our community, blending comfort, quality, and style. Be sure to grab your favourites, and keep an eye out as we expand the collection with more options in the seasons ahead.

Club Standards for Device Use We know staying connected is part of daily life — and sometimes that means taking a call or checking in while you’re at the Club. At the same time, the Club is a place many members come to relax, focus, and enjoy a calm, comfortable atmosphere.

To help everyone enjoy their time here, we’ve outlined a few simple standards around portable electronic device use.

Speakerphone & Audio To keep shared spaces comfortable for all, speakerphone or speaker functions are not permitted anywhere on Club premises. This applies to all devices, including phones, tablets, smartwatches, and laptops — even hands-free speaker functions. If others can hear your call, it’s probably best taken elsewhere.

Audio & Video Calls Calls are welcome in the following areas: • •

Hallways — at any time The Lounge and Shaughnessy Room — between 6:00 AM and 3:00 PM

Outside of these areas and times, we ask that calls be taken in the hallways only.

Our offerings include car wash appointments, Spa services, restaurant reservations (both at The Fireside and at off-site establishments), reciprocal club arrangements, family photo shoots, hotel bookings for out-of-town guests, show tickets, sporting events, and limousine services.

Mika Bott

Starley Waithira

Mika’s journey to The Arbutus Club is rooted in a lifelong passion for movement, performance, and supporting others.

Inspired early on by her uncle, a sports physician, she grew up interested in athlete care and recovery. With experience in fitness, ski instruction, and creative roles, transitioning fully into wellness felt like a natural next step—and the Club provided the ideal place to bring her skills together.

Starley’s journey to Vancouver is rooted in courage, creativity, and a strong belief in following her passion. Born and raised in Kenya, she excelled academically and was accepted into an optometry program—but her heart was always in beauty, artistry, and self-expression. Even as a teenager, she taught herself makeup and hair techniques through YouTube tutorials, practising until she perfected her craft.

She has supported competitive tennis athletes on the ATP and WTA tours, helping them stay strong, recover efficiently, and perform at their best. “Helping people perform at their highest level, whatever that looks like for them, has always been my favourite part of the work,” she says.

That drive eventually led her to pursue formal training and relocate to Vancouver, a city known globally for film and makeup artistry. At The Arbutus Club, Starley has found a place where she can connect with people from all walks of life while bringing her blend of talent, warmth, and creativity to the Janitorial team. “The Club has given me the opportunity to interact with people from many cultures and build diverse, transferable skills,” she says.

Lifestyle Manager

Mika leads with clarity, calmness, and respect, listening first and working collaboratively toward shared goals. Her diverse background—including studying across four countries, two decades as a graphic designer, holding a flight dispatcher licence, and officiating with Tennis Canada—has shaped her adaptability and steady approach.

Outside the Club, she enjoys exploring new coffee shops, functional movement training, beach walks, and supporting athletes of all ages. After a busy day, she recharges quietly with time spent among friends and family.

Janitor

Her biggest inspiration is her mother, whose work across different countries—despite significant challenges—taught Starley the meaning of strength, grit, and ambition.

During her downtime, you’ll find her experimenting with new makeup techniques, filming beauty videos, cooking, or taking spontaneous road trips to connect with nature. She also enjoys paddle boarding and winding down with her favourite shows. Her motto reflects her drive and determination: “Everything in life that matters requires risk—take it.”

Meet the Team

Natalie Law

Ashlee Golding

With more than a decade in retail management, Natalie brings strong experience in customer service, operations, and people leadership to The Arbutus Club. After years in consumer-facing roles, she was ready for a new challenge—and The Shoppe, with its focus on merchandising and member experience, offered the ideal next step.

For Ashlee, movement has always been a way of life. Growing up as an elite gymnast and competitive track sprinter through high school and university, she learned discipline, resilience, and the joy of pushing her limits. That lifelong connection to sport naturally steered her toward personal training and group fitness, where she spent many years supporting clients and coaching teams with equal passion.

Merchandising Specialist & Scheduler

Natalie has a proven record of transforming spaces and systems. At Dyson and Mejuri, she developed standard operating procedures that improved both back-of-house and front-of-house efficiency. A highlight of her career was leading the company’s top-revenue store during the 2024 holiday season, including an event where her team brought in $89,000 in one day.

Her leadership style is warm, open, and grounded in teamwork. “You can expect lots of communication and lots of laughter when working with me,” she says. She aims to create an environment where her team feels supported, comfortable asking questions, and confident in their roles.

Outside the Club, Natalie enjoys air-dry clay crafting, weekly boxing sessions, coffee dates with friends, and cocktails on a relaxed night out. Her favourite way to unwind is cooking a homemade meal—especially as she’s committed to trying one new dish every week.

Fitness Manager

Ashlee has been a familiar face at The Arbutus Club since July 2014, guiding members as both a Personal Trainer and Group Fitness Instructor. Stepping into this new role feels like a natural next step—an opportunity to combine her love of fitness with her passion for community.

She describes her leadership style as relationship-based and supportive. “Building strong relationships of mutual respect is key,” she says. “The team and our members can expect open communication, consistent support, and an environment where everyone feels heard.”

Outside the Club, Ashlee’s creativity shines just as brightly.

She enjoys DIY projects, crafting, and anything hands-on that keeps her active and artistic. If there’s a new class or skill to learn, she’s already signed up. After a long day, she prefers to unwind with something calming—ideally a massage and steam—but she’s just as happy with a quiet moment and a cup of tea.

RA CV Royal Automobile Club of Victoria, Melbourne

Among The Arbutus Club’s long-standing reciprocal partners is the Royal Automobile Club of Victoria (RACV) in Melbourne, Australia.

A Royal Legacy in Melbourne Founded in 1903, RACV City Club has a distinguished history. During the First World War, members voluntarily met more than 280 ships at Station Pier to transport servicemen and nurses. In recognition of this service, King George V granted the club its Royal Prefix in 1916. More than a century later, that spirit of support continues, with RACV staff and members still volunteering to drive veterans in the annual Anzac Day memorial march.

Pedals, Passion, & Purpose Ed Wong’s Journey Continues We first introduced Ed Wong, a long-time Club member, in the Winter 2024 issue of The Bark. Through his love of tennis and cycling, we showcased his resilience, passion and purpose with unwavering dedication to eradicating cancer. In the Spring 2025 issue, we did an update checkup on Ed following his bike ride in Peru through the Amazon to the Andes, ending up in Machu Picchu. In fact, since then, he has undertaken four more incredible long rides, the first through the Dolomites, Italy and Peru, one through the Atlas mountains in Morocco, another in Thailand from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, and now he just completed cycling tour in Bhutan at the foothills of the Himalayas.

Enduring more than 3 years of gloom, dealing with 5 family estates—all at once—is overwhelming enough for his (or anyone’s) life balance and sanity. Gradually overcoming the seemingly insurmountable, he is now resolved to move on to the bright side. Ed attributes his endurance and survival to paying careful attention to personal health and well-being. That’s where The Arbutus Club and his many bike rides (aka “therapeutic breaks”) have kept him going with the tenacity to reach the next bench mark in his pursuit. In some way, the destination is a lasting legacy for him to share his experience to help others through a similar predicament.

A fortuitous revisit to The Arbutus Club in the spring of 2023 changed things, after nearly 20 years of periodic absence.

A chance meeting with the Arbutus tennis community who persuaded Ed to re-engage. Reinvigorated since then, Ed has participated in numerous tennis clinics and camps - a departure from only playing tennis at another nearby club. As a consequence, he has somehow re-discovered many other programs like Release & Restore sessions, pickleball, and facilities like the Fitness Centre, whirlpool, sauna, not to mention the many eatery options. Some days, Ed quietly confesses that he’s amazed with all that the Club has to offer. Almost never coming to the Club, he laments having to pay monthly dues for more than 30 years! So wasteful he also mutters. The added attraction for Ed is how friendly members and engaging staff are. A truly warm welcoming feeling for any “new” member.

Now, he can’t stay away - becoming an at least once-a-week visitor to the Club.

Ed has reached an important milestone in his journey. Deeply aware of how cancer touches so many lives—near and far, young and old—he remains committed to making a meaningful contribution through cancer awareness, education, and early detection technology. He draws inspiration from the 1946 Dick Tracy comic strip by Chester Gould, in which the detective communicates with police headquarters through a two-way radio watch on his wrist—a gadget that seemed wildly futuristic at the time. Decades later, that very idea became reality in the form of the modern smartwatch. For Ed, it’s a reminder that bold ideas, no matter how outlandish they may seem, can one day come to life. “Dream big, and never say never,” says Ed. 19

The Musical Mind of

Ben Mink Few musicians have traversed as many sonic landscapes with as much grace and versatility as Arbutus Club member Ben Mink.

A Toronto-born, self-taught multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer, Mink has built a storied career playing guitar, violin, and mandolin—and in doing so, helped shape the sound of Canadian and international music.

From early gigs in Toronto, to his transformative collaborations with k.d. lang, and his memorable electric-violin performance on the track “Losing It” with Rush, Mink’s breadth is unmatched.

Q: You’ve spoken before about growing up surrounded by a wide mix of sounds and styles. Can you take us back to those early days—what first pulled you into music, and who or what helped shape your earliest sense of musical identity?

Mink’s work has earned him widespread acclaim, most notably two Grammy Awards for his collaborations with k.d. lang, alongside nine Grammy nominations. He has also won multiple Juno Awards and received recognition for his film and television work, with Leo, Gemini, and Genie Award honours.

What first pulled me into music is really the same thing that keeps me in it now—an escape into worlds I didn’t know yet—but somehow felt.

Maybe it was just trying to make sense of things, and as a teenager, definitely a way out of the boring suburbs.

In this conversation, we revisit those early days and follow the threads of inspiration, learn about his creative philosophy, and uncover how a lifetime of sound continues to evolve for one of Canada’s most quietly influential musical minds.

I grew up in the post-war ’50s -’70s, surrounded by my parents’ Eastern European folk songs and my sister’s violin lessons at the Cleveland Conservatory. I’d press my ear against barroom windows to hear downtown R&B bands and stay up late on school nights tuning into country radio. I was basically obsessed.

Later on, in Toronto’s ’60s Yorkville scene, you could see Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Gordon Lightfoot, and The Band all in the same week.

And by eighteen, I was in a band opening for Led Zeppelin, Chuck Berry, and Muddy Waters. Wild days…

Q: Your career has spanned an incredible range—from rock and pop to classical, klezmer, and film scores. When you move between such different musical worlds, what anchors your creative approach? Do you find a common thread that runs through all your work?

Genre doesn’t really matter. The thread is “feel”. What makes a piece work is intent, inspiration, and above all—taste. It’s not unlike fashion… how you put things together is what makes it work. That said, you still need some stylistic understanding if you want to stitch it all together gracefully.

Q: Collaboration seems to be at the heart of your career. You’ve worked with artists like k.d. lang, Rush, Feist, Heart, Elton John, and Roy Orbison, among many others. What do you look for in a creative partnership, and what have those collaborations taught you about your own artistry?

Well, you want to feel a connection and respect for their work of course, but honestly… if I can enjoy a good cup of coffee and some lighthearted conversation with an artist, I can usually work with them (Managerial intervention aside).

Most artists I’ve worked with are similarly stricken with a deep love for the arts, but each with our own angle… and usually, some trauma fuelling what drives us. I’ve learned that I laugh a lot more when I’m collaborating than when I’m working alone. Both modes have their moments, but collaboration tends to bring out the absurdity and fun.

Q: You’ve also worked in film and television composition. What draws you to writing music for the screen, and how does it challenge or inspire you differently than songwriting or producing for an artist?

Truthfully, I haven’t done a huge amount of it, but I’ve enjoyed it immensely when the circumstances are right. I’ve met some wonderfully talented people in the process… Kari Skogland and Gus Van Sant among them.

In film, the composer’s role is considered secondary. Your job is to lift and enhance what’s already on screen. The score usually isn’t the centre of attention unless it’s designed as a feature moment. Songwriting, on the other hand, is closer to creating a film narrative within the music itself and serving the singer.

Q: Outside the studio, how does music live in your everyday life?

Are there particular places, routines, or even silences that spark new ideas for you?

Ha! Every day. Everywhere. I hear sounds that can easily be incorporated into music… it’s second nature. The clicking of my car’s turn signal, the washing machine grind, microwave beeps… all potentially usable sounds. It never stops.

With more than 60% of the Club’s property devoted to exterior areas, there’s tremendous potential to make the most of them—and with thoughtful planning, it’s entirely achievable. Here, our talented gardening team shares their top tips to help you refresh and reimagine your landscape.

Season of Reflection

Digging In

As spring approaches, birds return to build their nests, fall leaves decompose to feed growing roots, and new buds begin to open.

It’s the natural rhythm of the seasons at work.

When putting plans into action, it’s useful to follow a practical order of operations—especially if multiple changes are planned. Begin with hardscape elements, as these typically require more work and may temporarily disturb the surrounding landscape: paths, patios, decks, fences, pergolas, arbors, gazebos, retaining walls, stone features, water features, and the layout of garden beds and lawn areas.

Amid this seasonal shift, life changes may also arise that prompt us to reconsider existing landscape elements, explore new ones, or address immediate concerns. During this time, gardeners may ask themselves a few guiding questions as they walk through their outdoor spaces: •

Am I using the landscape and garden areas effectively, or simply maintaining them because they’re already there?

•

Can any elements be reduced or eliminated? For example, is there now too much lawn with the kids grown up? Does the patio need expanding because we’re spending more time entertaining outdoors?

•

•

Would any additions improve the outdoor experience—a peaceful water feature, a fire pit, a compost area, or a veggie garden?

How much maintenance do I want to take on, and what changes would help manage it?

Take time to reflect on these questions before taking action. This is an often underestimated step in the garden process: understanding why you are planning changes. It isn’t always necessary to draft an exhaustive plan or enlist design services—sometimes a carefully considered to-do list, strategically ordered, can be just as effective.

Flow is key. Pathways should lead intuitively from one area to another and be appropriately sized. Front walkways are often wider to feel open and welcoming, whereas side paths should comfortably fit a wheelbarrow and allow safe passage. Stepping stone paths work well for less-used areas, offering convenient access while keeping feet dry yearround. Patios should be the right size and in the right location to support year-round use.

Landscape Design As you assess the landscape, you may notice the need for a more significant overhaul, or perhaps you’ll spot one or two spring projects that could make a meaningful impact. Either way, keeping a few basic design principles in mind can guide your decisions.

The old adage ‘form follows function,’ coined by architect Louis Sullivan, is foundational for a reason. Any potential change can be viewed through these two lenses, with aesthetics being shaped by the intended use of a space.

Function asks whether an element serves it’s purpose. Does the path provide optimal flow from here to there? Does the seating area feel welcoming and comfortable? Remember that function also includes how you want a space to feel—not just what you do in it.

Once you have determined how you want to use your outdoor space, establish a strategic undercurrent that “roots” your decision-making and helps prepare a design plan.

Once the overall form of the garden is established, the focus shifts to the softscape—the living elements. A useful starting point is selecting focal-point plants, followed by larger trees, shrubs, and hedges, working from the outside in. Planting is generally layered from taller to shorter, back to front. Consider the following elements: •

Privacy screens, such as hedges, trellises, and fences.

Year-round interest by mixing evergreen and deciduous shrubs and perennials.

•

Visual preferences balanced with the level of maintenance you’re willing to take on.

The best landscape is one that truly suits your wants and needs. Thoughtful design and redesign help ensure you’re spending time outdoors, enjoying the space fully—without feeling burdened by maintenance or stuck with elements that no longer serve a purpose.

Form refers to whether the shape, scale, or proportion of an element suits the overall space—from the width of a path to the size of a tree. When assessing form, consider both individual pieces and how they work together as a whole.

What do you love most about skiing right now, and what are you most excited for as you join the Whistler Freeride Club?

I love the big drops and skiing fresh powder. I’m most excited about skiing in my first freeride competition with the Whistler Freeride Club this year.

Skiing big runs can be exciting and a little scary—what helps you feel confident at the top of a slope?

Taking deep breaths at the top and calming myself down knowing that everything is safe. I trust my own abilities, and I know that my instructors wouldn’t take me anywhere that’s unsafe.

You ski, swim, play tennis, and do gymnastics at the Club. How do these different sports help you become a stronger skier throughout the year?

They all help with the different components of skiing. Tennis helps with my mental strength and building confidence, it also helps my physical abilities. Gymnastics helps with my flexibility and core strength. Swimming helps with my endurance and overall fitness.

If you could pick one superpower to help you in sports, what would it be and why?

The superpower I would pick would be to always have perfect technique. This will help as all sports require good technique.

You have two older brothers who ski—how have they or other mentors inspired you or shape your love of sport?

My brothers inspire me because after every ski day, they tell me all their amazing stories, and it inspires me to keep training so I can one day do those same runs and drops.

Do you have a favourite skiing moment or accomplishment that you’re proud of?

My favourite skiing moment would be skiing in Japan.

How has being part of The Arbutus Club community supported you as you train and explore different sports?

All my coaches are very encouraging and they give lots of good advice.

Do you have any advice for other young athletes who are trying out different sports or learning something new?

Just because you don’t like something initially, don’t give up! You may change your mind later.

Here’s Where To Begin: New To Skating

Getting Comfortable On The Ice Can stand up, take steps, be on the ice independently, and/or has completed 1-2 terms of Pre Learn To Skate.

Pre Learn To Skate A calm environment with a low skater to coach ratio to learn the first fundamentals: Fall Down, Stand Up, Stand Unassisted, Move Forward/Backward.

Learn To Skate is a great class to do in addition to Power Pups 1, 2 and Pups. The additional ice time and instruction is beneficial to skater development.

Ready To Level Up

If your child has not reached Level 2 of Learn To Skate, your skater may need more time developing the basics.

Learn To Skate A fun group class using circuits to ensure skaters develop skills focusing on balance, control, and agility. This class will teach skaters to glide forwards and backwards, balance on one foot, turn, and jump. All skills that are imperative to skaters beginning hockey.

Depending on the level of the skater, they may be ready to go straight to Pups. Reach out to the Hockey or Skating Director if you are unsure of your skater’s level.

Pups

A class for skaters that have the basics and can move on their own on the ice.

In Power Pups 1 skaters will start to develop a glide and become more familiar with skating skills such as sculling. This class is for skaters ideally of the age of 3-4 years.

Skaters have completed at least 2 terms of Power Pups 1 or are in Stage 2 of Learn To Skate A smaller class size focused on beginner power skating skills such as power pulls, stops, V & T pushes.

An introductory hockey program for children ages 4- 5 years who can move confidently on the ice forward & backward.

These skaters have experience with power skating skills from either completing Level 2 of Learn To Skate or Power Pups 2.

This class will introduce puck drills.

Meet the Makers

Emilia Sankey Lewin Age: 12 | Focus: Voice and Piano Is there a song or piece that feels special to you right now — something you love performing or that makes you proud?

I love singing songs from different musical genres including classical, folk, musical theatre, and pop, but musical theatre is my favourite. I like it because it’s very expressive and allows me to tell a meaningful story through music. Right now, my favourite song is What It Means to Be a Friend from 13 Jr. I love this song because it gets very emotional and deeply conveys the feelings of being betrayed and the meaning of real friendship.

How has music helped you express yourself or grow as a performer this year?

This year I have challenged myself a lot through my singing. I performed two solos at the Kiwanis Music Festival and won silver in the folk song category, singing a French Canadian folk song titled Auprès de ma Blonde. I also sang the solo I’d Rather Be Me from Mean Girls in the Arts Umbrella Cabaret in June.

My ultimate highlight was going to New York City to participate in a summer intensive musical theatre program. Martina helped me prepare the different solos I needed to participate in the program, and at the end of the intensive, I sang Hello by Adele at the Sheen Center for the Performing Arts. It was exhilarating to perform in New York, and I learned so much being surrounded by a diverse group of people passionate about musical theatre and willing to devote endless hours to improving their art. I fell in love with New York while I was there and want to go back soon.

If you could perform anywhere in the world, where would it be — and would you play or sing?

If I could perform anywhere in the world, it would be back in New York, but in a big Broadway musical! This year my goal is to keep building my piano skills so I can play my own accompaniment one day. Martina has also inspired me to try opera, and I hope to broaden my skills by performing in the Vancouver Opera’s children’s chorus this year.

Quote from Martina (Instructor): “I’ve had the great pleasure of being Emilia’s voice teacher over the past two years. Emilia is a gifted vocalist and actor and has always demonstrated a deep passion to learn and excel in singing.

Not only is she very receptive to instruction and takes her tasks seriously lesson to lesson, but she also has clear ideas of what songs and musicals she likes and wants to work on.

She is an incredible actor and it doesn’t take much to bring out the character and emotion she’s embodying through her singing.

She is driven but also humble, patient through the process, and always open to suggestions. I’m especially glad she’s embraced classical pieces and sings in French and even Italian (which she doesn’t speak!). In addition, Emilia is very sweet and supportive of her friends and colleagues and loves singing in ensembles as well. I’m excited to see what the future holds for her and to help her achieve her musical goals to the best of my abilities.”

Holly Yip Focus: Visual Arts

What drew you to art originally, and what keeps you inspired to keep creating?

I grew up in a creative household — my father was an architect and would always encourage us to draw and paint in fun and resourceful ways. My siblings and I also had the pleasure of painting with the late Gordon Smith, one of Canada’s most influential artists. I treasure the time we had in his home studio with his wife Marion — much of my outlook and practice in creative endeavours reflect their artistry and inspiration.

I find it incredibly valuable to nurture creativity in ourselves and in our children. We were born to play as children who naturally communicate through movement, crayons, and sounds; as we grow into adults, I think we lose some of that play where the importance of exploration and expression is lost. We need creative people in this world who can think outside the box and connect new dots!

How does your art fit into your daily life — is it a form of relaxation, expression, or something else?

Art is very subjective. For me, it can be a form of expressing my thoughts and observations, but I also find it enriching and challenging when I take on a new project or learn a new technique. This past summer, I pressed cosmos flowers from the garden onto fabric — it was an incredibly fun and immersive project, bringing my love for gardening and textiles together!

Currently, I take weekly group art classes, usually at the Club with Lena. It’s my pocket of time where I learn something new, engage in creativity, and am fully present.

What advice would you give to junior artists or anyone wanting to explore their creative side?

We are so fortunate to have art classes for all ages at the Club!

Lena is terrific — her children’s classes fill up quickly, but there’s always plenty of room on Mondays for adults of all levels and backgrounds. They say the more creativity you use, the more you have — so use it!

What kind of art do you love making the most, and why?

I love making art inspired by nature, especially skies and clouds. I enjoy adding bright colours and lots of contrast to my work.

Where do you get your ideas or inspiration for your artwork?

I get lots of inspiration from nature — from photos I take or interesting images I find online. If I like something or someone in a movie or book, I’ll draw or paint my version of them.

How does it feel when you finish a piece you’re really proud of?

When I finish a piece I’m proud of, I feel very accomplished and happy with myself. Because so much of my art is often reworked or set aside, finishing a piece I like makes me feel really pleased and proud. Also, I’m a bit relieved because I can finally stretch my back! Usually, I do one painting in a single day and spend eight or more hours on it, so I’m often crouched over for a long time.

The Heart of the Season At the Arbutus Club, the excitement of a new season begins long before the dancers step on stage. Music drifts from the studios as choreography takes shape — each routine crafted with imagination, purpose, and a sense of fun.

Whether the dancers are preparing for the Stars of Tomorrow recital, bringing festive magic to The Nutcracker, or polishing routines for competition season, rehearsals are where the magic truly happens.

The Creative Process Every routine begins with inspiration — a song, a story, or an image that sparks an idea. From there, choreography grows naturally, shaped by the dancers’ age, skill, and personality. Dancers must work hard on developing the technique that is the backbone of the choreography. Without mastery of the basic steps, there is no framework for a dance.

As the group gains confidence, they begin to add their own flair and personality to the steps. This collaboration turns choreography into a shared creative journey.

In the final weeks before performance, the dancers focus on refinement, synchronization, and stage presence to get ready for the spotlight.

Behind the Curtain

Toresa Greenwood Featured Teacher Toresa Greenwood began her formal dance training at Canada’s National Ballet School, where she developed the foundation for a lifelong career in dance. After performing professionally, she discovered her passion for teaching and choreography — helping young dancers experience the same sense of wonder and discipline that shaped her own journey.

Today, she is a ballet examiner and board member for Cecchetti Canada, and a long-time instructor at The Arbutus Club, where her classes reflect her belief that dance is for everyone. Through her thoughtful, inclusive approach, Toresa continues to inspire students to find beauty, joy, and confidence in movement — whether they dance once a week or every day.

2026 Squash Championships

Canadian Squash Championships

The Arbutus Club is incredibly excited to host the 2026 Canadian Junior & Senior Squash Championships, marking a milestone moment for our Club.

Welcoming the country’s top athletes and coaches to our courts is both an honour and a privilege, and our entire team is energized by the opportunity to showcase our facility and the passion for Squash here at the Club! The anticipation is already building, and we can’t wait to open our doors to everyone next spring.

Approximately 450 junior and 450 adult participants are expected over the seven days of competition. The Junior Event will take place from April 25 to 28, followed by the Adult Championships from April 29 to May 2. The event will be live-streamed on CBC Gem.
