President's Letter

Dear Members,

With autumn settling in and our fall programs now four weeks underway, I want to begin with a heartfelt thank you. Your patience during the recent pool closure allowed our team to complete the mandatory maintenance that keeps this facility safe and welcoming for everyone, including the installation of the new roof assembly and pool liner. It has been wonderful to see the deck buzzing and the lanes alive with members of all ages again. Thank you to our Facilities and Aquatics teams for working tirelessly behind the scenes to reopen the space.

I hope everyone enjoyed our ever popular welcome back party, Streetfest. Our family certainly did. I extend my sincere thanks to the staff for their incredible efforts in planning and delivering such a seamless event. With over 1,000 members in attendance, the event was a standout start to the season.

I also want to acknowledge the success of our annual Backpack Drive in partnership with the YWCA. In just our second year, members showed tremendous heart. Together, the Club delivered over 100 fully stocked backpacks for children across the Lower Mainland. In the busyness of back to

school preparations, it’s easy to see a to do list as just another thing to get done, but for many families, those lists are real challenges to meet. Thank you for turning generosity into action. We have a lot to be thankful for as a community, and we are committed to building on that spirit of giving as we embark on another program year. Please keep an eye out for our winter initiatives.

One of my favourite moments as a Board member each year is the Long Service Luncheon, where we honour staff who have served the Club for more than five years and pay special tribute to those marking milestone anniversaries. While we cannot name everyone here, I would like to especially recognize this year’s milestone honourees: Mark Schlossarek (aka Bar Mark), 40 years; Christine Piner, Director of Membership, 35 years; Jojie Misenas, Lead Receptionist, 35 years; Claudia Luna-Guarneros, Bistro Manager, 30 years; and Shelley Garland, Director of Operations, 25 years. These individuals exemplify the commitment and excellence that so many of our staff bring to the Club each day. As we head into a very busy holiday season, I hope you’ll join me in taking a moment to thank our staff throughout the building. Their dedication to creating a true “home away from home” is the foundation of your experience at the Club.

Over the past few months, we conducted additional studies of the tennis building and its surrounding area, including assessments from a structural engineer, a civil engineer, and a geologist. This work gives us a comprehensive view of options for our aging facility. The Long Range Planning & Development Committee is preparing a member survey to outline those options and gather your needs, priorities, and perspectives for our next long range plan. In the meantime, please ensure your contact information is up to date and that you’re reading the weekly eNewsletter and the monthly Around the Club newsletter so you don’t miss the opportunity to participate. If you’ve recently moved or have a new email address or phone number, please reach

out to Reception or the Membership Team to update your account.

Have you experienced Brunch Around the World yet? If not, you’re in for a treat. Each month, our Food & Beverage Team creates a delicious brunch menu complete with desserts and a live action station, all inspired by the featured country of the month. This special event is hosted in The Fireside on the last Sunday of most months. Look out for upcoming dates and details.

Something spooky is descending on the Club this Halls-oween on Thursday, October 30! Keep a watch for frightfully fun details—costumes encouraged for kids and the young at heart.

Looking ahead, we have many favourite member events on the horizon, from Grapes and Hops to Breakfast with Santa. I hope you enjoy this special season at the Club and all that our programs and community have to offer. Please don’t hesitate to reach out, as the Board is here to listen, to support, and to steward the Club we all love.

Meet the Team

Danielle Clayton-James

Since joining the Club in March 2025, Danielle has been bringing a playful energy and quick wit to her role as HR Coordinator. Her days are a mix of recruiting new talent, supporting staff, and being a go-to resource for all things team-related. So far, she says the best part has been the people: “From day one, everyone has been welcoming, supportive, and just fun to be around.”

Before coming to Vancouver, Danielle moved from Jamaica to pursue her MBA while also working at YMCA BC. That experience reinforced the importance of strong teamwork and showed her how challenges can be opportunities in disguise, an outlook she carries into her role today.

Much of Dani’s approach to work and life is inspired by her mother, a teacher who instilled in her a love for learning and curiosity for new skills. That spirit shows in the wide range of endeavours she’s dabbled in over the years, from short courses to learning instruments. As she puts it: “If I don’t know how to do something, there’s nothing I can’t learn to do over time.”

Outside of the office, Danielle leans into her creative side. She’s been experimenting with candle making, pottery, painting, paper making, crocheting (“horribly,” she jokes), writing, and even digital design. On quieter days, she’s happy to keep things simple: a night in with a book or catching up on TV shows. Her personal motto captures her playful outlook on life perfectly: “If it makes you happy, it doesn’t have to make sense to anyone else.”

Byron Ayala

Meet Byron, who starts his mornings bright and early as a Janitor at The Arbutus Club. He first joined the Club as a part-time janitor in April 2024 and, thanks to his dedication and positive attitude, was recently promoted to a full-time role last spring. As one of the first to arrive each day, Byron takes pride in keeping the Club spotless and welcoming for members. For him, it’s more than cleaning, it’s about creating an environment where people feel comfortable, safe, and cared for. “It fills me with pride knowing my work contributes to members enjoying their experience from the very first moment,” he says.

Before joining the team, Byron studied Customer Relations and International Business Management in a co-op program, while also working at an arts & crafts store. Those experiences reinforced a key lesson he carries with him daily: “satisfied customers return not for the price, but for the quality of service”. That philosophy drives the care and positivity he brings to his work here.

Byron credits his father as his biggest inspiration, teaching him the values of humility, simplicity, and dignity in all forms of work. Outside of the Club, he enjoys shopping, riding his scooter, and spending peaceful afternoons resting under the shade of trees. His personal motto reflects his steady determination: “Consistency conquers what luck cannot.”

Felix Ariwibowo

Our incredible staff are hardworking people who embody the motto “Putting Families First.”

As Banquet Captain, Felix plays a key role in making events at The Arbutus Club successful, ensuring smooth service and client satisfaction every step of the way. For him, there’s nothing more rewarding than seeing an event come together seamlessly, thanks not only to his own efforts but also to the dedication of the banquet and kitchen teams he works closely with.

Felix began his hospitality journey as a banquet houseman and server in a downtown hotel. Starting from the ground up gave him valuable perspective and taught him the importance of teamwork, efficiency, and service excellence. His father’s work ethic has always been a guiding inspiration, and at the Club, he also looks to colleagues Rachel Alojado and Don Robinson, whose depth of Food & Beverage experience he hopes to emulate in his career.

Outside of work, Felix enjoys calisthenics training (yes, he can hold a headstand), walking along Kitsilano Beach, and catching live music in local cafés. On days off, he keeps things simple with rest, TV, and calls to family back home. For Felix, small acts of kindness matter, and that mindset shines through in the way he approaches both work and life.

Jaya Sidhu

For the past year, Jaya has thrived as the Club’s Youth & Family Coordinator, overseeing the Youth Room, South Gymnasium, Tot Gym, and Turf. Her role blends program planning, guiding the Youth Leader team, and supporting families—whether it’s solving challenges on the fly or creating safe, engaging spaces where junior members can learn and grow. “I really enjoy the diversity of my role, as each day brings new challenges in the best way,” she says.

A

UBC

graduate in Childhood Development and Family Kinship

Theories, Jaya has always been passionate about working with children and youth. She previously held roles with Pedalheads Bike Camps, UBC’s Overnight Educational Camps, and as a Residence Advisor, and she continues to coach volleyball at her former high school. Inspired by her longtime coach, who she describes as thoughtful, strong-willed, and powerful female leader, Jaya brings that same mix of playfulness and strength to her work at the Club.

Outside of work, volleyball remains her biggest passion. She plays beach, grass, and indoor multiple times a week and once represented her province in high school competition. A lifelong sports fan, she and her dad rarely miss a Canucks game, and she enjoys a friendly rivalry with friends through fantasy hockey. To recharge, Jaya loves reading (already 12 books this year), movie nights (The Notebook is a frequent pick), and baking her “famous” cinnamon buns with her mom and sister. And when it comes to karaoke, her go-to anthem—I Want It That Way by the Backstreet Boys—always guarantees a laugh and a singalong.

Respecting Vehicles and Parking Etiquette

Please be mindful and respectful when navigating the parkade and surface lot. If you accidentally bump or damage another vehicle, it’s important to do the right thing: leave a note with your contact information, and report the incident to Club Reception. We all appreciate having our property treated with care— and being a responsible driver is an important part of being a good neighbour and community member.

Signing In Guests

We love when Members share the Club with family and friends—it’s part of what makes our community vibrant. If you bring a guest, you are required to sign them in before using any facilities. Sign-ins help us maintain a safe, welcoming environment, manage capacity, and protect the shared experience we value.

Guests using athletic facilities without being signed in may result in a $200 fine charged to the sponsoring member.

Junior members are asked to sign in their guests for all Club use, including food & beverage and athletic facilities. Guest fees apply, and signing in ensures everyone is accounted for and helps avoid fines.

We understand oversights can happen, but taking a moment to sign in your guest helps maintain the welcoming and respectful culture we all value. Thank you for your care and support.

Professional Development Days (Pro-D) and Guest Access for Children

On Professional Development Days and other school closures, the Club often experiences a significant increase in usage, especially during peak daytime hours. To help manage capacity and ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all members, children are not permitted to sign in guests between 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM on these days.

This policy helps us maintain a balanced and comfortable environment, particularly in our youth spaces and shared areas. We appreciate your understanding and support as we continue to prioritize access for our members during these high-demand times.

Supporting Brighter Beginnings

Share the Warmth This Season with BabyGoRound

Welcoming a baby into the world is a joyful milestone—but for many families in our community, it can also bring financial strain and uncertainty.

This holiday season, The Arbutus Club is proud to support for the second year in a row, BabyGoRound, a local non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring every baby has a safe, supported, and loving start in life.

BabyGoRound is the only organization of its kind in BC, providing essential baby gear and supplies—such as cribs, strollers, blankets, outerwear, clothing, diapers, formula, and more—to families facing financial hardship. Through their store-like locations in Vancouver and Cloverdale, families are referred by over 100 social service agencies and receive customized "baby gear kits" valued at more than $2,500.

In the past year alone, the organization supported over 2,200 families across nineteen BC communities, helping more than 7,000 individuals—many of whom face multiple barriers such as housing insecurity, domestic violence, newcomer resettlement, or single parenthood. In addition, their reuse model diverted more than 87,000 pounds of quality gear and clothing from landfills, making a positive impact on both people and the planet.

How You Can Help

As part of the Club’s seasonal giving efforts, we invite members to support this meaningful cause by donating new or gently-used blankets and outerwear for babies and toddlers (up to 24 months).

This is a wonderful opportunity to pass along items that can truly benefit families in our community and to give back to those who may need it most—new mothers with newborns and children up to age two.

Whether you’re sharing a gently-loved item your little one has outgrown or picking up something new while out shopping, your contribution will directly help a family during a critical time in their lives.

Let’s show what the Arbutus community is all about—kindness, generosity, and coming together to support brighter beginnings for every child.

Drop-off location: Club Reception

Donation period: Monday, Nov 10 – Friday, Dec 12

Making The Cut

In nature, plants prune themselves by discarding older branches over time. In the forest, this process has little consequence—there’s no concern for safety or aesthetics. In fact, fallen branches and leaves enrich the soil, mulching and feeding the forest floor.

In our more structured environments, however, we need to care for the plants we place. This ensures a balance between plant health, aesthetic beauty, and harmony with our neighbourhoods and workplaces. Safety is also a consideration— how plants impact their surroundings and passersby matters. By choosing to plant in cultivated spaces, we take on the responsibility of being stewards of nature.

The way each plant grows is primarily to capture the light it needs while maintaining balance and stability in the soil. Their natural “self-pruning” helps sustain this goal. Keeping this perspective in mind can guide us in pruning thoughtfully—supporting both the plant’s health and our own needs for a well-kept landscape.

While many shrubs and trees can be pruned year-round, fall is a particularly natural time. The growing season has ended, so we can clearly see a plant’s health and form. This allows us to shape it for next season’s growth and flowering.

As fall approaches, let’s review which plants benefit from autumn pruning and the impact it can have. While it’s impossible to cover every plant here, the following general guidelines will help. Always check specifics for the plants you’re concerned about before making cuts.

Fall Flowering Plants

Summer and fall-flowering trees and shrubs can be pruned now, as they will set buds on next year’s new growth.

Macrophylla hydrangeas (big mophead or lacecap blooms) form buds from late July through September. The best time to prune for strong flowering is late July, but fall pruning to thin them out—or deadheading spent blooms—is fine.

Arborescens hydrangeas (such as the classic “Annabelle”) set buds on new growth, so pruning in late fall or winter won’t affect blooms.

PeeGee hydrangeas also bloom on new wood, making late-season pruning safe.

Winter & Spring Flowering Plants

Most winter and spring-flowering plants have already set their buds for next year. Pruning now risks removing them and reducing spring blooms. However, you can remove dead or damaged branches, trim lightly for shape, and thin crowded areas if necessary.

If buds are already visible, avoid heavy pruning. If reducing size is essential, be aware that some blooms will be lost—but this is sometimes necessary to keep plants within their space.

Hedges

Hedges can be trimmed back in fall, especially to taper or thin them. This helps reduce susceptibility to snow damage over winter.

Perennials & Grasses

Perennials and ornamental grasses are the simplest to prune. Their care is often based on aesthetics and personal preference. You may cut them back as they die naturally or leave some standing for winter interest. When trimming, cut stems to just above ground level to mimic their natural dieback.

When & Why To Prune

Step back and examine the plant from multiple angles. Ask yourself:

1. Are there dead or dying branches?

2. Does the plant fit its space, or is it overgrowing?

3. Is growth uneven or lopsided?

4. Is it too dense, shading other plants?

The overall goal is always the plant’s health and vitality.

General Pruning Tips

1. Prune above a node or branch joint, close to the stem.

2. Use sharp, clean tools (secateurs or a saw) and make smooth cuts.

3. Make one or two cuts, then step back to assess the shape before continuing.

4. Remember: you can always cut more, but you can’t put it back. When in doubt, prune conservatively.

Finally, if you’d like more guidance, gardening forums and community groups are excellent resources. Many fellow gardeners are eager to share their knowledge and experience with specific plants or situations.

Boardroom Interactive

The Boardroom now features a fully interactive, Bluetooth-enabled display screen that can take your meeting or planning session from “yawn” to “yowza!” Easy to set up and ready for action, all you need to bring is your bucket of brilliant ideas to drive your business forward.

Contact Kim McBurney or Seshu Vungarala in our Catering department at catering@arbutusclub.com. They’ll handle all the arrangements for your next unforgettable business event. You’ll be a legend—more than you already are.

Brunch Around the World: Lazy Sunday

Brunch is the most delightfully mixed-up mealtime ever invented. No one’s quite sure when it is, what’s on the menu, or when it’s supposed to end. But it’s Sunday—so who cares? Pass the mimosas and let’s enjoy way too much food.

On the last Sunday of most months, we’ll feature a special brunch celebrating the great food natios of the world. We started in France, next stop: Italy. After that—who knows?”

RAMEN SALAD

Ingredients Serves 4

Salad

4 portions of frozen Ramen noodles

4 whole eggs

1 English cucumber (matchsticks)

2 whole fresh tomatoes (small wedges)

8 slices of honey ham (julienne cut)

1 cup frozen corn thawed daikon radish sprouts (if available)

3 pieces of green onion (chopped) toasted sesame seeds nori seaweed for garnish (optional) poached chicken breast (optional)

Dressing

1 tsp chicken soup base (powder)

1 tbsp white sugar or honey

3 tbsp Japanese soy sauce

3 tbsp rice vinegar

2 tbsp mirin

4 tbsp water

1 tsp sesame oil

Optional Poached Chicken

Butterfly a chicken breast. In a small pot, bring 600 mL water, 2 tbsp sake (or white wine), and ½ tsp salt to a boil. Reduce to a simmer and cook chicken until fully cooked through. Let cool, then shred by hand.

This salad can be prepared a day in advance, making it a perfect lunch to bring to work or school. It’s hearty, flavourful, and refreshing. The noodles soak up the soy-based dressing, while the crisp vegetables and simple toppings add brightness and crunch. Easy to assemble and full of satisfying textures, this is the kind of recipe that quickly becomes a repeat favourite.

Instructions

1. In small bowl, mix all ingredients for dressing together until sugar is dissolved. Let sit until ready to serve. If serving the next day, the dressing can be refrigerated for up to 3 days.

2. In a small pot with boiling water, carefully place eggs with a slotted spoon in the water, and set timer for 13 minutes. While eggs are boiling, fill another pot large enough to cook ramen noodles with water. Bring water to boil. Add a little salt.

3. Remove eggs and run them under cold water until the eggs are cool enough to handle. Peel eggs and set aside.

4. Cook ramen noodles as per instructions on package. Cool in ice or very cold water and strain well.

5. Prepare all toppings, cucumber, tomatoes, ham julienne, corn, cut eggs in half.

6. In four bowls, evenly distribute the noodles.

7. Top each noodle portion with vegetables, ham and egg halves. Top with green onions, sesame seeds, nori seaweed, poached chicken breast (if using) and radish sprouts.

8. Stir dressing and drizzle over each salad. Enjoy!

What's in Season?

Eating seasonally in Vancouver not only supports BC’s 22,000 farms and reduces the environmental impact of long-distance shipping, it also means enjoying produce at its freshest and most flavourful. Seasonal foods are packed with nutrients at their peak, often more affordable, and connect us more closely to the rhythms of the region.

As the weather cools, check out what hearty and nourishing fruits and veggies will be in season this fall.

Warming Up to Winter

Gay's Guide to Registration

Grab your calendar, your coffee, and maybe even your lucky charm, because Winter 2026 Registration Day is just around the corner!

Whether you’re signing up your little ones for their favourite gymnastics class or finally committing to that Pilates program, here’s your ultimate survival guide for a smooth and (mostly) stress-free registration experience.

01

Do Your Homework!

Before registration day, grab your device and take a deep dive into our Winter 2026 Program Brochure to find out which programs you’re interested in. The Winter 2026 Programs Brochure will be available online starting Tuesday, November 4 at arbutusclub.com under Our Club > Publications > Programs Brochure.

Members can use the ‘Advanced Search’ feature on our program registration page to zero in on exactly what you’re looking for this Winter. The ‘Advanced Search’ feature— available on the desktop version only, on the ‘Classes and Events’ page—can help you narrow your search by filtering days of the week, price range, and age range. You never know what you might find!

02

Age Restrictions

Ensure any age restrictions are pre-approved by our department heads. You won’t be able to register your child for a class unless they meet the age requirements or you have approval in advance.

03

Family First

Make the most of our Family Registration option on your desktop to register multiple family members for multiple programs all at once.

Have your program codes ready, type them into the Family Registration search box, select your family members’ names—and on to the next!

Use Your Laptop or Desktop Home Computer

While most of us always have our smartphones nearby, using your home computer or laptop tends to provide a more stress-free experience, as members can search more intuitively and access all the features—like Family Registration!

The Registration desk is located on Level 1, in the adminstrative area by the North Gymnasium entrance.

Waitlist Tips

Didn’t get into your first choice? Don’t panic—we monitor our waitlists closely and do our best to open new spots or adjust future offerings based on demand.

Only join the waitlist if you’re genuinely interested—it helps us plan better and improves your chances of getting a spot if one opens up.

Please remove your child from any waitlists or duplicate registrations as soon as your plans are finalized to open spots for other members.

Program Policies to Keep in Mind

The ‘Big Four’—Aquatics, Gymnastics, Pilates, and Tennis—are super popular! To give everyone a fair shot, members can register for a maximum of 1–2 classes per program area.

Pay close attention to special cancellation deadlines—they can sneak up on you faster than a snowflake in December!

We know Registration Day can feel like a game show where everyone’s buzzer works faster than yours. But we promise—we’re behind the scenes making sure everything runs as smoothly as possible. Thank you in advance for your patience as we work through the clicks and refreshes.

In conclusion, registration doesn’t have to be stressful—think of it as the exciting kickoff to a winter full of fitness, fun, and new experiences. Get prepared, stay cool (but cozy), and we’ll see you (and your clicker finger) on registration day!

SINGA PORE KICKIN' IT IN

ARBUTUS CLUB MEMBERS SHINE AT THE 14TH SHITO RYU KARATE TAIKAI

Stepping off the plane into Singapore’s 32°C heat and 83% humidity was no small challenge. For a dedicated group of Arbutus Club members, however, it marked the beginning of an incredible opportunity—to represent Canada at the 14th Shito Ryu Karate Taikai, an international competition held every two years and attended by athletes from around the globe.

This year’s Canadian team was composed primarily of Arbutus Club members. Team Heads included William Chung, Alice Chung, and Garson Ho—the three Head Instructors for Canada—with Alice Chung having taught at The Arbutus Club for over 20 years. The competing team members were Ashley Braun, Sophie Kuah, Ethan Whiton, Kae Lin Whiton, Matthew Huang, Alexander Huang, and Raiden Chung, son of Senseis Alice and William Chung.

In addition to competing, several members pursued belt promotions: Matthew, Alexander, Kae Lin, and Ethan tested for their first-degree black belts; Sophie for her second degree; and Ashley for her third.

Singapore proved a spectacular host. Changi Airport, ranked the best in the world, impressed with its Jewel complex—featuring a free-standing indoor waterfall and lush rainforest. Across the city, world-class dining ranged from Michelin-starred restaurants to vibrant hawker centres, and fitness facilities seemed to occupy nearly every block. The championship venue reflected this dynamic spirit, combining a hawker-style market on the main floor with the competition gymnasium on the sixth floor of the Tampines recreation centre.

The event, held from July 25–27, opened with a workshop attended by participants from 23 countries. That afternoon featured black belt grading, from first through fifth degree. The tournament took place on Sunday, where athletes tested their skills against top international competitors.

Kae Lin excelled in her division, earning the only Canadian gold medal in the under-black belt category. Matthew advanced to the medal round thanks to a bye and secured a bronze, while Ethan battled hard to win silver—along with a few bruises. Raiden faced one of the toughest divisions, the men’s black belt category, with over 20 competitors from 23 countries, and brought home a silver medal for Canada.

In total, Team Canada earned four medals: one gold, two silvers, and one bronze. All participating members were promoted to their next rank by Tsukasa Mabuni, Soke and granddaughter of the style’s founder.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS ON THEIR ACHIEVEMENTS:

3rd Degree Black Belts: Ashley Braun & Raiden Chung

2nd Degree Black Belt: Sophie Kuah

1st Degree Black Belts: Ethan Whiton, Kae Lin Whiton, Matthew Huang & Alexander Huang

Registration opens Thursday, October 2 on Event Listings (member-only event).

As twilight falls and the moon begins to rise, join us for Monsters and Moonlight—a whimsical Halloween celebration for the whole family. Turning Pages Together

Since 2009, The Arbutus Club Book Club has been bringing members together to share stories, exchange perspectives, and, of course, talk about books. Founded as one of the Club’s activities aimed at members over 50, the group began after being promoted at “Club’s Day”. Among the original members were Judith Karla, Pat Lysyk, Dorothy Dolphin and Alfredette MacDonald—the latter still an active member today.

In 2011, JoAnn Murtagh, the current coordinator extraordinaire, took over the role of coordinator from Pat Lysyk, and the Club has grown steadily since—reaching as many as 26 members. Today, the Book Club has 21 members, with 10–15 attending each meeting. Even though many of members travel during the fall and spring, their love of reading keeps the conversation going yearround, including through the summer months.

Their reading list is carefully curated. Once a year, each member can suggest up to three titles, based on the established criteria. The suggestions are circulated to the group, and members vote for their top twelve picks. The books with the most votes become their reading list for the year—a process that sparks just as much lively discussion as the books themselves!

RAINY DAY survival guide

Keeping the Whole Family Happy When the Weather Won’t Cooperate

When the fall rains settle in and outdoor plans are washed away, it can be tricky to keep everyone entertained and upbeat. But rainy days don’t have to mean restless kids and cabin fever. With a little creativity, you can turn drizzly afternoons into cozy, laughter-filled moments the whole family will remember.

Here are a few fun and easy ways to brighten up gloomy days together:

Hot Chocolate Creations Station

Nothing chases away a grey afternoon quite like mugs of warm, melty chocolate. Turn a simple treat into an activity by setting up a hot chocolate creations station in your kitchen. Kids can design their own “signature cocoa,” give it a silly name, and present it to the family like a little café.

Make The Club Your Rainy Day Retreat

The Arbutus Club is the perfect place to burn off extra energy, visit with friends, or simply enjoy time together as a family. Swim some laps in the pool, rally on the tennis courts, or grab a warm drink at The Bistro and watch the rain from a cozy spot inside. A change of scenery—without having to brave the weather—can make all the difference.

Invent an At-Home Film Festival

Choose a theme—animated classics, nature documentaries, or everyone’s favourite childhood movies—and create a mini film festival. Have the kids make tickets and posters, then snuggle up with popcorn and warm blankets. It’s an easy way to bring the magic of the cinema into your home.

Have a Bake-Off

Few things warm up a grey day like the smell of something baking. Divide the family into teams and host a friendly bake-off—cookies, muffins, or even homemade pizzas. Let the kids be in charge of decorating, and don’t forget to crown a “Best Presentation” and “Most Creative” winner. The best part? Everyone gets to taste-test.

Global Kitchen Adventures

Choose a country, research a simple family-friendly recipe from that place, and make it together. It’s a fun way to explore new flavours and cultures—and can spark kids’ curiosity about geography. Bonus points for decorating the table to match the theme!

Get Crafty

Stock up on art supplies like construction paper, markers, glue, and beads. Rainy days are perfect for letting imaginations run wild. Try seasonal crafts like leaf rubbings or homemade autumn wreaths, or check out page 00 for some fall-themed craft inspiration. Hang your creations around the house for an instant cheer boost.

Bring Out the Board Games

Dust off old favourites or try a new family game together. Classics like The Game of Life, Clue, and Scrabble are perfect for a wide range of ages, while fast-paced card games like Uno keep everyone on their toes. Add a competitive twist by keeping a family scoreboard throughout the season.
